    The Running Thread--2024

I did Erie in 2021. It's probably not much different than your local trail. There are only a few places where there's actual spectators and it's pretty much the same scenery the whole race. The weather is probably going to be hot too, it was in the mid 70s during the second loop when I did...

March Running 205.1 miles 7:45 avg/mile Felt good this month. Hopefully on track for my half marathon in five weeks.

    Marathon Weekend 2025

Seems like a letterman's style jacket would be an easy lay-up for the weekend jacket, but having seen Disney merchandise that might be too optimistic.

    Marathon Weekend 2025

SAFD: For local races, it's the Pittsburgh 10 Miler. I love that distance and it's a fun course. It's the reverse of the first 10 miles of the marathon course and the last three are pretty flat so it's a fast finish. I've done it ever year they've held it since 2012. Chicago and Steamtown...

I have an older model of these and they work great for anything under 15 degrees. If it's over that, they're too warm to wear. They aren't bulky or heavy at all either on your hands...

ATTQOTD: I pretty much always do the same local races every year: Pittsburgh Half Marathon-May Liberty Mile-July City of Pittsburgh 10k-September Pittsburgh 10-Miler-November I'm doing the Chicago Marathon too in October. I might throw in a small local 8.1k in March as a warmup for the half...

December Running 167.19 miles 7:48 avg/mile Missed a few runs at the beginning of the month with a quick trip down to Disney World/Universal but December's always just trying to maintain a base through the month. 2023 Running 2,257.52 miles 7:47 avg/mile Lowest mileage of the past four years...

I did the race last year and stayed at the Hyatt Place on K Street. It's directly up from the White House, so it's an easy walk to the start in the morning. I don't know if it was exclusive to last year or just the time I went but the expo and packet pickup can be chaos. It's a very nice...

Had my favorite race of the year yesterday: Pittsburgh 10-miler. The weather was great for it, 45 and sunny. The course is just the reverse of the first 10 miles of the marathon here. You have a good mix of hills, bridges, some rollers and the last three miles are pretty flat. Finished in...

Had a small, local half marathon north of Pittsburgh yesterday (Buffalo Creek Half). It's a point-to-point that's downhill or flat most of the way so it's fast course. It was rainy for the first few miles and the course goes on a trail for from miles 2-10. It's crushed gravel mainly and it...

September Running 172.52 miles 7:42 avg/mile Had a 10k last Sunday (Pittsburgh Great Race). Always a fun way to start the fall races off. Finished in 39:14. The splits were almost dead even, I was two seconds faster in the second 5k. I don't think I could have done that if I was trying to.

August Totals 191.21 miles 7:50 avg/mile I would say, at least the temperatures should start to taper or cool off now but it's supposed to be in the 90s all next week here in Pittsburgh. I do look forward to September with a 10k at the end of it, then a few more races through the beginning of...

What's Worse - Running in the Heat or the Cold?

Heat, hands down for me. The first mile might be a little rough in the cold (I'd say <15 degrees) but if you're dressed appropriately, you eventually do warm up*. In the heat, for me, there's really not a point where it starts getting better. You start out sweating quickly and it continually...

Pretty close to it. You can make out the start of it in the picture. It was only about 10 yards after the start, but you had to come to a quick stop and get going again if you weren't in the first row or so.

July Running 201.3 miles 7:49 avg/mile Good month given the heat during it. Had a mile road race at the beginning of the month. Finished in 5:38 and eeked out my goal of not getting last in my heat (103/131), although there was a 10-12 person pile up at the start which made things interesting.
