Am I Up to the Challenge of the 2014 F&WF? Bring on the Food!

Finally finished reading all the pages, but let's get 1 thing straight.....I didn't bring the bad weather. It seemed once you went back home on Sunday, the temps were back in the 80*s. So there...:cool1:

BTW, for the record , I was so exhausted all day Saturday, which is rare for me. Even though it was arrival day. I might add that this was our 1st trip with MBs and FP+ , and although I do agree some things were easier, I just need to figure out the ups and downs, & ins and outs for fp. Guess we'll have to book anuddah trip:goodvibes.

Which leads me to this....Come Jan 15 we'll know if our 14-15 day trip will be a reality or not..:surfweb:.

Great TR though, kewl pics too, especially of US/IOA.:thumbsup2

Nada, just saying I'm usually up for all day activities, this day I barely made it back to the room without collapsing on the bed.
....oh....okay.....I thought you were insinuating that I was referring to you in my TR as the wet blanket that you usually are......

Really enjoyed your TR, thanks for taking the time to post this :cheer2:

We are going first week of Feb., first time at AKL, can't wait! We were hoping for an upgrade, but the place looks packed :confused3. Sure we will enjoy regardless of room/location !

"....Let's Say Our Last Good-bys to the Castle - But First, a word From Our Local Turkey Leg Vendor..."

....do you know how a Disney vacation is really no vacation unless you board your favorite ride or see your favorite attraction, or in general, go through the motions of some sacred tradition? For Ron, it's the turkey leg. He can't get enough of them; traditionally, we buy one [to share] at Toluca Turkey Legs ...

....in Frontierland, we hurried over to the turkey leg kiosk, where the CM informed us that we were in luck, since he had just received a new batch of turkey legs; that kind CM picked out a great big, juicy leg and carefully wrapped it up 'to go', letting us know that we could get one of those blue Disney bags at the kiosk next door that sells those Davy Crockett hats. My DH has always been fascinated by the patrons walking along, happily chomping away at their 'food handles', mostly because those turkey legs always contain so much sinew and tendons and the like. He enjoys it in a more dignified way - mainly, by dissecting it and hovering over the pink, fleshy meat with a fork, slowly devouring each succulent morsel.

"What's a Person Gotta DO Around Here to Get an ADR?"

....now that Ron had fully devoured his turkey leg, he was in a right fit mood for a nap. Well, that was all well and good, but what about ME? Other than breakfast, I hadn't eaten much all day. Plus, my highly-prized and sought-after ADR for the Cali Grill was now just a fleeting memory in my imagination. I should also mention that I screwed up ROYALLY when we were using our food credits. I knew that I had to save a pair of sit-down dinner credits for the Cali Grill, which, of course, was going to be gained by the absence of the Friday night 'eating at Disney location'. What we should have done was to use the one credit each when we dined at Rose & Crown. I have no idea what possessed us to pay out-of-pocket....Well, since the Cali Grill was definitely out of the picture (THAT ship had sailed as of last night) I decided to take matters into my own hands and scurry downstairs to Boma. We had three credits each and we were leaving in the morning and I wasn't about to let them fall by the wayside. As I descended the circular stairs, I noticed the throngs of people hanging about, and many of them had those little buzzer thingies. Not good. As I walked towards the check-in podium, I glanced to my left - a full-packed Boma. REALLY not good. I quickly and politely (hey, kindness has been known to go a long way - besides, this scenario had played itself out during a previous visit to AKL) recounted what had happened - all to no avail. The CM explained they they had WAY-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y overbooked, but in rare instances, they could begin to take new ADRs after 9PM; however, that was not possible, and she was very sorry, yada, yada, yada.....as I walked away in despair, she called me back and suggested that I try Jiko; they don't get as many bookings as Boma does [I imagine, mainly because of the price of a dinner, but also because it isn't typically as 'family-friendly']. With a renewed sense of hope, I ventured to the Jiko podium, where the manager and hostess happened to both be stationed. Unfortunately, there was not an ADR to be found either, which was a bit perplexing since Jiko wasn't nearly as crowded as Boma obviously was. To boot, there was only a lone couple at the bar waiting to be seated, but I am not one for confrontation so, I sadly headed back to the room. As I reached the lobby floor, a lightbulb of sorts suddenly went off in my head and I strode to the Concierge/Guest Services desk, with all the confidence that I could muster. The CM was helping another AKL visitor, so I waited my turn and approached the counter as the other woman left. I explained what had happened with our Cali Grill ADR's; she seemed sincere about wanting to help me but she explained that the computers were 'down' and she couldn't really help at that moment. I think an invisible Tinkerbell suddenly flew over the CM's screen because the computer magically came to life.....

"Can You Say: 'Best meal EVER!' ?"

....I'm not sure what site she'd opened - I was thinking it was a main restaurant ADR page; she looked at me and winked, telling me that an ADR had just opened up at 9PM, but that I could come downstairs [from the room] about 15 minutes earlier. I thanked her profusely and was very tempted to walk back to that Jiko manager and give her a 'what for', but I thought better of it, relishing my good fortune. Back at the room, I let Ron sleep for another 20 minutes, and woke him to let him know what had transpired. Besides, he wanted to wash up, change his shirt, and fix his hair - fair enough.

We walked along Zebra Trail, and if I'm not mistaken, I think there was a little bit of an extra bounce to my step. I had heard many positive things about Jiko, but surprisingly, it never occurred to me to ever make ADRs here....:confused3 We approached the podium, and I do believe that I spotted a little twinkle in the hostess's eye as she escorted us to a somewhat secluded table on the second tier with a grand view of the entire eatery:

....we were immediately introduced to our server of the evening - I vaguely remember her name as Sadi(?) [pronounced SAH-dee] and she was wonderful. She handed us a menu:

...and soon after brought two warm damp hand towels so that we could wash our hands. That was quite lovely, and was just another indication of the attention to detail and service. We weren't sure of which wine we were going to be drinking, so she opened several bottles and let us sample each. She already knew of Ron's celiac, so she assured us that chef would be coming to tableside. Meanwhile, she brought the most fascinating breads and butter-like spreads for them - Ron's was GF, of course. It was right about at this point where chef introduced himself and INSISTED that Ron try the Grilled Wild Boar tenderloin as an appetizer, while I should try the North African Carrot soup with black garlic ice-cream. Black garlic WHAT???:

OMG, did I just die and go to heaven??!?!? The night got better and better, with each ensuing course:

....I opted for the filet mignon[above] served over spoon bread, while Ron decided on the short ribs. I take it they were good, because he didn't even offer a taste for me....

....this was the dessert; it's made of chocolate and sinful as all heck, but we enjoyed it thoroughly. [BTW, it's called Ghanaian Chocolate and Kenyan Coffee Pot de Crème with raspberries!]

....as dinner was coming to a close, we insisted that chef come to table to pose with Ron, and to thank him for a meal truly fit for a king:

20141101_225632_zps3799cccc.jpg

....as we 'rolled' past the extensive wine selection [Jiko boasts it to be the best on property]:

...and again past the lounge:

....we ventured out by Arusha Rock to take in some of the last of the AKL air before calling it a night....
