MAY 2020 WISH Challenge - Anything is Possible

This triggered the same cycle of emotions as when the furlough was first announced. But after working thru it all, I've come to the concussion that nothing has really changed except the date we go back.

Oh no - we are certainly experiencing lots of ups and downs at the moment - enjoy all those snuggles with your kitty :flower3:

Yikes! Was he able to wear a mask

No - because our numbers are much lower here - they aren't recommending masks as a general rule - I am hoping that it will calm down and was just a first day/weekend burst. Things are varying here by workplace DD is cashier at a chicken takeout - she wears gloves but that's it they haven't installed a perspex barrier like supermarkets, DS19 also works as a delivery drive for the same chicken store - he does contactless delivery; McDonalds has installed perspex screens - even to their drive through and the staff wear gloves; and the other DS work for KFC - they are instructing their staff to wash their hands between transactions at the counter and/or packing food - they tell the kids that wearing gloves will scare the customers! I said ha no it would actually be the opposite I would feel better if they were as then they are protecting customers and staff! They have this week started temperature testing staff when they arrive for work and if 38 degrees C - they get sent home. It is such a mixed bag of precautions.

I managed to fall early this morning in our master bathroom and have been put on restrictions by both DH and DD15 so I am going to change it watching how much water I drink and trying to increase that a bit by the end of the month.

Oh no- feel better soon and hopefully your car issue gets sorted out - I hate car issues - they are a costly dilemma.

We haven't been told here how long things are going to take to fully reopen as it is dependent upon numbers as we slowly reopen. We are still under a manditory 14 day quarantine for anyone who travels outside the state upon return and for all non essential visitors (translation if your a trucker coming in to bring food and other supplies fine, if your a medical personal coming to help no need to quarantine, coming to escape by hiding out in a small town because our numbers are low plan on the quarantine). Plan is to reopen the state to visitors and drop the manditory quarantine at phase 3 whenever that is though I think we will still have some restrictions if you are coming from or have traveled to hot spots.

Then there is the issue of even though Montana as a whole is opening up counties can impose stricter limits as well as tribal governments. The two closest reservations to me are the Crow and the Northern Cheyenne both of which have extended their stay at home orders plus a manditory 14 day quarantine if residents go off the reservation for any reason other than to seek medical care that can not be found on the reseravation for themselves, a member of their household, or a family member living in a different household.

The Crow tribe has check points entering the reservation where they are asking what business people have, if they are just traveling through on the interstate or US highway they are allowed to continue but if they say I plan on camping in the Big Horns or the Pryors it is turn your hind end around and go back.

From what I have heard they are not stopping semi trucks so they can keep moving though they are supplying water and snacks if they do stop. I have also heard that if people are coming in from out of state pulling a camper trailer they are following them to make sure they leave the reservation and do not try and go around baracades to go camping.

This has cut down on the number of drivers we have here from Wyoming especially on the weekends as if you (go get out your maps, I'll wait or go to google maps) come up I90 from the Wyoming/Montana boarder and your in the Crow Reservation. Come on US 212 and unless you want to take a state road up to I 94 at Broadus your coming across the Northern Cheyenne and the Crow Reservations before you get on I-90 at Crow Agency.

I haven't heard much on the other reservations as they are not in my local area but upon doing some checking all of them are still under restrictions of various kinds ranging from a date that may change to until further notice.

For those who are not up on how reservations work they are considered sovereign nations within the United States by order of Treaties signed back in the 1800s. Tribal members both on and off the reservations are United States Citizens as well as of the 1960s or 1970s and are residents of the state that they reside in. Tribal members do not have to live on the tribe's reservations or if assigned to more than one reservation one of them in order to vote in tribal government.

Resources and Medical Care on Reservations is limited even under the best of circumstances so they have responded by being stricter on restrictions in response to the pandemic than the states they are located in even closing and ordering stay at home orders in states that did not issue them. Due to the ignoring of the native american community by the media outside areas in which these tribes are located unless something major is going on like a protest of some sort most of the world is not hearing what is going on in what is known as Indaian Country.

My dad came over and helped DH get the battery hooked up. They got the truck started and it sounds rough but that might be from having sat with the same gas in it since February 2019. They ran the test the guy at the one shop DH called suggested and can't see a difference. My dad said he found out one place has a 2 year warantee and another place a 3 year on transmission rebuilds if that is what is wrong so we are at the point where we need to call and see if they offer towing and how much it would be. If not we will have to decide how we are getting to the place we are planning on using.

Ahhh Self-Care Sunday what have you done today to re-fill your well of wellbeing?

492394

What do you think of the 'self-care' our earth has been going through whilst we have been self-isolating - the clear skies, fresh air, clear clean water, and animals roaming further than they can when we are out and about? Some of the comparison photos without the smog and pollution have been amazing.

I spent some time out in the fresh air in the garden doing some weeding and then started staining more of my daybed/swing. In the morning I started the day snuggled up under a blanket on the couch feeling a little sneezy and snotty - around lunch time it eased up. We are heading into cooler weather and flu season - I have already had my flu shot - it is going to be a stressful few months of constantly self-debating if any symptoms are in the Covid realm :sad2:

Social Saturday

What did you get up today that was social in our time of social distancing? or what will be the first social thing you do when we can with someone other than your immediate family?
With permission from my principal and my students’ parents, I drive around to my students houses yesterday and delivered cups of planted Daisy seeds. I wore my Minnie Mouse ears and Mickey Mouse mask and some rubber gloves to make the delivery while they stayed inside their house. Once o stepped away, most came out to talk a little. It was so good to see them and chat with both the students and their parents. It was a little similar to conferences, but I was receiving the feedback this time. I was asking how things are going and what they enjoy doing at home. I asked which school activities they enjoy. It was really great, but also a little exhausting. But I’m so glad I did it!

I’m getting ready to go for a run. Then we have our new Sunday routine of a big breakfast and Facebook Live church service. I have one more student to visit today. And then no big plans. Probably a little yard work. Planning out the week. Food prep. The usual Sunday stuff...regrouping before the work week starts up again ;)

Sorry, I got a little behind on this thread this weekend.

Intro - I’m 49, in the “South Shore” region of Massachusetts (but not actually near the water), and home right now with my DH, one DS finishing up his freshman year of college, and two spoiled but very lovable cats. Pre-quarantine, I was doing some substitute teaching and helping look after my honorary niece and nephew.

A warm :welcome: to the new folks!

I've got a cat sitting next to me on the mouse pad... he's somewhat patiently waiting for me to finish posting and move over the the sofa for a good snuggle.

One of mine does that as well.

Social Saturday - Yesterday I had a movie date in the den with DH and helped DS by listening to his first draft of a paper. I also texted with my cousin, who was having a birthday.

Self Care Sunday - I love the quote! It’s so true that we have to take care of ourselves in order to do our best for others.

What do you think of the 'self-care' our earth has been going through whilst we have been self-isolating - the clear skies, fresh air, clear clean water, and animals roaming further than they can when we are out and about? It’s definitely amazing! I hope it makes people realize that our influence really is bigger than many thought, and that we do have the power to help our world by investing in things like solar energy and even simple things like planting trees.

We're still having rain today, having the pattern of 5 days of sun and 2 days of rain each week is kind of great, I'm really enjoying it. I did manage to get out for walks twice yesterday and also spent some time sitting on the front porch.

For self care today I'll do more walking and I'll build the new desk chair that came a couple days ago... I've been sitting on a dining chair while at the PC and it isn't ideal. Yesterday I watched a couple really interesting educational TV programs, one on the architectural history of Notre Dame and then a couple more episodes of a show called 'Somewhere South', which is about a Chef who specializes in southern food and does explorations of a specific food, like dumplings or greens, getting in to the origins and social history of it. Fascinating. So for self care today I'll look for some other things to watch that will teach me something.

It’s a little dreary today, but I will get out for my walk soon. We had groceries delivered Friday so I should do an inventory and plan out some meals for next week. We somehow got two bunches of bananas, so I need to find my Cooking Light recipe for banana bread!

We’ve been watching some really interesting programs on our local PBS station-a Ken Burns documentary on the gene, an American Experience episode on polio and a feature on Jewish soldiers in WWII. I also had recorded the Broadway production of 42nd Street from a couple weeks ago.

I'll look for them. I think PBS has a special "club" you have to join to get the good stuff on demand, so I'm going to research that today.

At least you got your flu shot which should lower that possibility.

I wish I could do that, but I would need a police escort and a bulletproof vest to be safe in their neighborhoods.

Social Saturday

What did you get up today that was social in our time of social distancing? or what will be the first social thing you do when we can with someone other than your immediate family?

Today I rang my mother and had a chat, then my sister rang me and we had a chat, I texted with my friend who lives about an hour away from me on and off throughout the afternoon (DD16 says we are as bad as teenagers :rotfl: ), DD and I watched "Birds of Prey - the emancipation of Harley Quinn" - It was better than I expected - the adds had me worried - but it was ok. I also did get off my but for a while and stained the frame of my swing/daybed and some of the deck sleepers that I had to flip during summer as they buckled - they have straightened out now but the colours didn't match and it has been bugging me for ages! Tomorrow I will stain the 'bed' part of my swing. It is a public holiday here on Monday - so am looking forward to an extra day to myself without work.

DS19 had a shift at Kmart today - and it was the first day of the relaxation of some restrictions here in Queensland - people were allowed to do non-essential shopping - but are supposed to apply social distancing rules - I knew it would be a mess and stayed well away. DS19 said it was horrible - as crowded as Christmas! The individual shops were 'policing' numbers in their stores - but I'm not sure that the shopping centre itself did much to limit the people there - Here in australia for shops etc. there is a 4 square meter per person rule - so shops measure up and then post on the door how many people are allowed in the store at any one time - and this is regulated by staff. So Kmart due to its size apparently can take 250 people in store - even with that large number - there was a line from the door snaking through the shopping centre at least 50 metres of people waiting to get in- DS should have taken a pic - but he doesn't really do social media and would not think to do that! He said social distancing HA it did not happen at all today. I feel frustrated because he had to work amongst it! and honestly people - Kmart has been open the whole time - and unlike in the USA they did not block off anything in the store - so really if people honestly NEEDED things this past stay at home - they could have gotten it here at any time. So really most of these people were just out for the sake of being out. I know it has been hard to stay at home - but really it just shows that common sense goes out the window when the rules get relaxed a little. It will be interesting to see if we get a spike in numbers and our state premier has said she will reinstate restrictions as needed to control the spread! Okay rant over ugh.

As for my social get together when things are over - dinner or lunch with a friend or friends - OUT - somewhere lovely but not crowded :)

Probably the first thing I'll do is have a get together with my mom and my sister's family. We might do that on Sunday for Mother's Day. It would be outside and we would keep our distance of course. We still haven't decided for sure. My sister is the CEO of our local hospital, so I think we are going to let her make the call based on how everything is in our county this week. We wouldn't do anything to break any laws or recommendations or anything like that though. Our state (Illinois) has now said no gatherings with over 10 people. We would have 9, so it would be just under the limit. Still makes me a little nervous due to my mom's age (76) and the fact that my sister, DH and myself are all still working outside the home, so are in contact with more people that we would be if we were just at home. We are also in downstate Illinois, so our cases here are very few. Our county has only 13 cases with 9 now recovered.

After that, I would like to eat in a restaurant. We have been getting take out once a week, but it's just not the same lol!

I'm a self-colorer, so I don't have the hair issue that some people do. It's one advantage to being cheap and impatient. I'm not good at making appointments ahead of time and I hate sitting in the chair for a couple of hours to get my hair done at the salon, so I just learned to do it myself. I just have basic brown hair, so it's really not too difficult or anything.

Today has completely been a wasted day. DH and I are watching a movie now and when it's done, we'll be heading to bed. The only productive thing I did today was do a grocery pickup. We had leftovers for dinner, so that was easy. Otherwise, I've spent the day organizing things on my computer (which I enjoy taking the time to do) and working on figuring out My Fitness Pal again. I took a little nap this afternoon and talked to my mom and sister which was nice. I talk to my mom most days, but I haven't really talked to my sister much since all this began. Most weekends that we've been home, I try to get a list of things accomplished, so it was kind of nice just basically doing nothing.

So interesting announcement in my state this morning. We are headed back to school. I have mixed feelings. This weekend was the first of a 'relaxation' of some of our restrictions and rather than wait to see if we get a spike in the next 2 weeks - they have changed the plan for schools which was originally to be learn from home for the first 5 weeks of term - we are now only 2 weeks in and already changes announced! One more week of learn from home then next Monday 11th Kindy, Prep, Year 1, Year 11 and Year 12 will go back to full time schooling, then 2 weeks later the rest of the grades will return - so essentially all students back to full time school as of 25th May - this is qualified of course with statements of if things change the roll back will as well. Hmmm stay tuned for the outcome. In Queensland we have had only 6 new Covid diagnosis in the past 7 days. In the region of the Sunshine coast where I live - 2 of the occurred with us now having only 3 active cases - but 170 on active self-quarantine orders based on travel or potential exposure. Nationwide there have been 90 new cases in the past 7 days. Other states have restarted schooling to varying degrees in Australia depending on numbers in their states - I have fingers crossed that all will go well - it definitely plays with anxiety levels.
My twins are in year 11 - so that means back to school in a weeks time - mixed reactions - DS seems very blase about it all says he doesn't care and DD who at first didn't like the idea of online learning has embraced it and now doesn't want to go back - she likes the sleep ins and non crazy mornings without making lunch and getting ready for school! I expect they will start phasing university back in the next few weeks as well.

I got up in time to attend most of church online I missed the opening and the start of the first song due to having to go use my bathroom really quick. I've taken a couple of naps, had a large cup of tea, and drank some water in between my naps. Paid bills since DH got paid on Friday and I hadn't gotten them done for thie pay period. Balanced the household budget so I know how much we have to spend on incidentals that come up in the next couple of weeks.
DH did a grocery run on Saturday though we are fairly well stocked other than a few little things. It helps that we keep a good food storage and have just been rotating that every month year round so that we are using the older items first especially the non perishible canned and boxed goods though I plan on stocking up more on things like rice and boxed potatoes to keep in storage, We have plenty of meat in the freezer and

I got notice from my dad that we are getting not only our normal pork sometime between mid July and early September but we are getting some beef. I haven't heard how much but am guessing that it will more in likely be a split between me and my brother's household so 1/2 of a good raised a few miles from me beef. DH will go hunting sometime in Oct-Nov for a deer and we will more in likely get another hog in January-February based on when we normally get them.

I really only purchase a few cuts that I specifically want for a particular recipe, 98% lean ground beef when it's on such a good sale I have to use my store membership card and am limited to 10 pounds, and chicken breasts along with the occasional managers special box which is often enough stew/stirfry beef for two meals, 2 meals worth of chicken leg quarters (thigh and leg), tenderized chicken breasts, and a package of boneless pork tenders for $20 which is less than $4 a meal considering that box will make 6 meals for my family.

Should be able to start planting my garden in the next few weeks and some of the short growing items like the spinach, lettuce, and radishes should be ready by the end of the month first part of June. Can't wait to start getting fresh vegetables from my garden again for this year.

Tomorrows plans are to call and get pricing on the transmission and see if places offer free towing. As long as it is under the amount we have in savings from our stimulus check we will go ahead and schedule now if not the plan is to save up the difference as we can and get it done later. My mom agrees that putting the extra on a credit card when we are trying to pay them off or at least down is not a good idea. I really don't have any place to go as it is still going to be a while before anything opens for 4-H activities beyond club level project meetings provided there are no more then 10 people and 6 ft between members who are not in the same household. Since we have been told by the state office that is until at least the 15th we will not be having a club meeting again this month.

Had a bacon sandwich with my tea this morning which started my day out just perfect with that thick sliced hickory smoked goodness. 12 year old slept past 1 PM which is good considering she was up at 9:30 Saturday morning after not going to bed until close to 4 AM that same morning and was a crab all day. She has gotten a bit cranky and crabby now though has settled down since she had a bowl of baked beans. I thinkI am going to go start her a bath and let her soak and play in the tub for a while, though she just took her ipad back to her room so I think I will wait a bit.

She won't go to bed until DH gets home and he gets off at 3 AM here and is usually home shortly after. With the stores all closing at 8 PM so they can do cleaning and restocking overnight there is not much traffic on the 5.5 mile trip home so if he misses all 4 lights between work and home he is still walking in the door at 3:15 (3:08 if he doesn't have to stop at any lights). Starting the bath she has a couple of pieces from her tea set, Pooh water thermometer (not that it really matters now but it makes her happy so I will deal with it-just not replacing it when it finally breaks), and the Finding Nemo Bath Toy Set that now 15 year old bought on our Disney Trip with her gift card (the bag it came in has since been broke but the toys are all still in great shape). Plan is to let her just soak and play as long as she wants, get her in jammies and her collection of vitamins and supplements taken and then she should either go to bed before DH gets home or soon after depending on how long things take.

Now if I could just do something about the one cat having a fit because mean grandma (that's me I figure if 15 year old took over mommy duty when they were tiny kittens and raised them from bottles after they were orphaned, she must be mommy so that makes me grandma) won't let her go outside with her siblings. She went out either Thursday or Friday evening about 10:30 (can't remember which but think it was Friday), didn't come in with her siblings when DH got home if it was Thursday or when we called them about that time Saturday morning if it was Saturday. Normally if one or two of them don't come in around 3:15 they want in anytime between 5:30 and 8 in the morning. She was not there, At least one night went by and she still wasn't there which made me start to worry and cry. She finally showed up about 4:30 this morning. If she went out Friday evening it was 42 hours that she was gone and if she went out Thursday it was 66 hours. This after I told her to stay in our yard and not to go visiting because we are supposed to be social distancing.

I told her that she was grounded to the house for 6 weeks and would only be allowed outside on a harness and leash. I might actually let her go out with her siblings tomorrow morning when I get up as long as it is light enough to see outside. I am not telling her that though.

Is it possible for you to homeschool in Australia. I know from one of my mommy boards that a number of parents are looking at doing that here especially if there is a parent at home or they have high school age that can be left home alone and trustworthy enough to do their work. There are also a couple of online school options that are basically public school at home options here as well that have been available some states have one or the other and some have both options.

Since we don't know here if schools will open in the fall and then come flu season when we start (varies by State but here in MT it tends to be mid to late October for a start with our peak the end of January to the middle of Matrch) to see an uptake in cases of flu and possibly covid 19 close the schools down for a bit and go back to online learning. The idea is hopefully if that is done schools can start back to in person classes sometime in April for the last few months of the year. There is also talk of going on a mixture schedule for the entire year with those who need extra help going 3 days a week and the ones who don't 2 days a week in order to keep class sizes small along with either the class changes rooms for subjects at older grades as a group or they basically stay in the same room and the teachers swiitch. Which would work fine for everything but a few subjects. The problem is where are you going to find a group of 10 students even in a high school that has a graduating class of 400-700 students depending on the year that are taking the same courses. Going off what I am guessing my niece who will be a senior in the fall will be taking. (guessing here based on what she has taken in the past) Spanish 4, Honors English 4/cross listed with a university course in English because of being in the dual enrollment program), American Government (this is only a half year course so would have to be the same option for the 2nd half of the year from Current Events, Psychology, Sociology, Montana History, and I think a couple of others like 20th Century World History. The same Math not sure if she is taking Honors Algebra 3 and Probability or Honors Calculus 1 or 2 or Triganometry (the honors math track here takes Geometry in 9th, Algebra 2 in 10th , and then can take any of them but Calculus 2 in 11th as you have to take 1 before taking 2), the same science (not sure if she will have biology 2, physics, or chemestry as she could take either of them), and the same other elective course.

Schools here start the end of August first part of September (our elementary district will be starting a week earlier as they are not adding the week long spring break that the high school district we are zoned for has added back in after taking it away in excange for we will do a bunch of annoying half days in the middle of the week spead throughout the year starting in the 2002-03 school year. That bright **** idea was supposed to be for 3 years because the calendar had been approved for those 3 years and could not be changed. Why it took until now when no one liked it is beyond me: Parents because you can't go do anything and since 90% of grade school students who need afterschool care go to either the Y or Boys and Girls Club which are staffed by University Students who have classes of their own until right before normal start time and can't get out 2 plus hours earlier so no transportation is provided which means parents have to take time off work to go pick up their kids and drop them off at the building their kid goes to regularly. Since it's in the middle of the week you can't even take a shorter lunch break other days, or come in early a few days or stay late and then take the time off and start a longer weekend (these were never scheduled before a Thursday and Friday off either). Teachers didn't like them because again they couldn't go on vacation and many had to figure out how to pick up their own kids while still staying the required time after classes let out, The building administration and secretaries didn't like it because there would be at least one kid that was not picked up and no answer to the parents so if the kid normally went to the Y or Boys and Girls Club program they would have to call. Y and Club staff didn't like them even though those of us who could work got some extra hours because that met we would get a call and get yelled out because we were not there to pick up and name was waiting for the bus or van depending on what normally went to that building. Even though a letter was sent to the school at the beginning of the year before school started stating we did not do pick up on those dates and a reminder letter sent out the week prior that stated just a reminder the YMCA will not be running it's after school program at school name on May 6 nor will we be providing transportation. All transportation to the extended day program at the Y building downtown must be provided by parents which has been communicated to the parents. If a student is not picked up by his or her parent(s) or guardian please contact them and not the Y or Boys and Girls Club signed by the director of the program.

So if they had to shut down and go to online only classes that means we are looking at 6-9 weeks of instruction in the buildings, 8-10 weeks online only learning, 2 weeks off for the Winter holidays, and then another 10-12 weeks of online learning depending if they went back in mid or late March, and then finish off the year with 8-10 weeks in class instruction. I am seeing a lot of parents on the parenting boards I am part of saying that is not worth it and deciding if they want to go with one of the online public high schools, an online private high school, or figure something else out and are asking questions. The other group I am seeing asking questions is parents of younger kids who have health issues at least until there is a vaccine or a treatment that is easy enough to deal with and won't require hospitalization on if they should homeschool for K or 1st grade level next year and then look at the following year going back to either public or private school the following year depending on if the fast track plan works.

The warmer weather and sunshine along with the scale 😳 are my motivation today. I really need to focus my motivation on eating right! Healthier lunches and snacking! Unfortunately the weather looks likes it’s going to change tomorrow and the rest of the week, so I’ll need to stay focused on my goal to keep myself motivated the rest of the week. But for today...the sun is shining and the real feel is already over 60! So I’m going for a run with my daughter to start the day.
