It was all a lie

Yeah, the couple looked shady as heck, but I didn't think the homeless guy was in on it too.

I thought there was supposed to be honor among thieves. If the couple had shared the ill-gotten gains equally with the man, they all probably would have gotten away with the scam.

What evidence is there that the homeless man was in on it? The news doesn't say. Is it just the word of the couple? The two have have proven themselves to be liars & cheats and good at concocting stories? They could have just turned on the homeless guy, figuring if they were going down, they are taking the homeless guy down with them, since he's the one who turned them in, in the first place.

I'm not saying I think the homeless man is innocent. I always thought it was odd that a woman travels at night, alone, on I95 with no money or credit cards, no cellphone and no gas in her car. That is an assault waiting to happen as she is a sitting duck on a busy interstate. Any woman who regularly drive along I95 knows better. But, then a homeless guy saves her instead? I'd just like to know how the police figured out the homeless guy was in on it all along.

I'm only guessing but I'd imagine they found information on the devices they took from the couple when they processed the search warrant. I doubt it's just someones word alone.

Nigerian princes have more credibility than Go Fund Me campaigns.

What's funny is one of the commenters on the page the OP linked to is bashing the fake GoFundMe account, but then lists her own husband's GoFundMe account, saying HIS story, (similar to the homeless guy of being a disabled vet, :rolleyes1 ) is real and people can give to his account instead. . . I'm thinking, What is wrong with this picture? :sad2:

I can’t believe anyone would give money to any go fund me account where you don’t personally know the people. I think you should just expect it is a scam and if it is, it is on you. It certainly is the perfect scam set up.

Is the guy really homeless? And how stupid is the couple thinking the guy won’t come after his cut?

I think it’s safe to give money to people you don’t know, given the right circumstance.

When the bus tragedy happened in Humboldt earlier this year a gofundme was set up and it raised $11 million in just a few days.

Yes, he was really homeless. Allegedly, they met him outside of the casinos in NJ. He was probably panhandling in the streets and they struck up a conversation a few times over a few months time. And that's when they hatched the scheme together.

NBC news tonight said GFM would give all the money back to the dupes. Not sure if that's a good thing or should they learn a lesson?

Pretty sure the victims of Vegas would disagree with you. Frankly that GoFundMe was one of the most wonderful acts of kindness I've seen from people in a very very long time.

There's controvery with GoFundMe for sure that doesn't mean every single person/entity out there is trying to scam people when using it. And TBH you can know a person who has one set up and it be a scam. Strangers aren't a qualifier in that aspect.
