It was all a lie

I think it’s safe to give money to people you don’t know, given the right circumstance.

When the bus tragedy happened in Humboldt earlier this year a gofundme was set up and it raised $11 million in just a few days.
Any new word on whether or not that money has been dispersed? Last I heard a few months ago they had only released a very small amount to each family. The only ones that had actually gotten their cut was GoFundMe...:scratchin

I couldn’t find anything that said it had been done yet. Reading a bit, it looks like the process is taking so long because there is legislation in SK that all crowdsourcing has to be overseen by a court or committee. I don’t see why they can’t just divide the money evenly between all the families. I don’t think a disabled child should receive any less or any more than a child who died. Also, gofundme should have waived their fee for this one.

What is the status of the bus crash case? Was the driver of the truck ever charged with anything?

The whole thing seemed fishy right from the start. The woman's story as reported never made much sense.

The GFM goal was a modest $10,000. Not a bad scam whether split two or three ways. Looks like the couple got too greedy when the response was overwhelming. They figured they could screw the homeless man and he wouldn't complain.

Very frustrating for the donors. AFAIK each family received an initial sum of $50,000 very quickly to cover funeral costs and OOP travel/medical expenses. GoFundMe takes a fee of 3% and they collected immediately when the fund was closed.

Yes, he has been and the trucking company he works for is being investigated for safety and mandatory training violations. There is also one family that has brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. Perhaps more will if the police investigation into company practices reveals wrong-doing.

Well, yes those cases are different (if the money is managed properly) than just one person raising money for themselves with a story that may or may not be true. We know the shootings and crashes happened. I was thinking more of individuals. It’s no different than panhandling. Which some people are fine with too.

It absolutely is the sad part, but it's best to go direct to the source if you want to provide assistance.

I recently donated to a cancer patient. Her sister is a friend of mine, so I gave the money to her to pass on.

The patient’s boyfriend started a gofundme, and then later dumped her. Thankfully, the gofundme was linked to the patient, but it just as easily could have been linked to slimeball, and if it had, he’d have cleaned it out.

Pretty sure the victims of Vegas would disagree with you. Frankly that GoFundMe was one of the most wonderful acts of kindness I've seen from people in a very very long time.

There's controvery with GoFundMe for sure that doesn't mean every single person/entity out there is trying to scam people when using it. And TBH you can know a person who has one set up and it be a scam. Strangers aren't a qualifier in that aspect.

There are other ways to help in times of tragedy, I would never give to a GFM account. I have no idea what their oversight is and I just don't trust the people running the accounts.

I never said there weren't other ways :confused3 The poster was discussing GoFundMe and I responded pertaining to GoFundMe

The poster was also discussing donating to people they don't know. The poster didn't say they felt uncomfortable giving to people they don't know. They said they couldn't believe anyone would. It's great if you don't feel comfortable about it but it doesn't make it a certain way if other people want to.

Unfortunately, some of the so-called legit causes have done themselves in. When you buy a pink jersey for over $100 and about $5 actually gets to breast cancer research, though not an illegal scam, still does damage.

Well yeah, there’s that too :(

Some details that may be interesting.

The couple was in debt at the time the scam was concocted.
The $400,000 was spent within four months.
The woman's own mother was skeptical of the story and warned her daughter about the risk of scamming people.

And perhaps not surprisingly, the couple is no longer together and the woman's lawyer is claiming that SHE was duped by the two men and is a victim.

Oh brother!

NOT according to the police. A police officer or someone authorized to speak, with some type of badge,) at the press conference said right after the GoFundMe went live, the woman texted a friend saying it was all a scam. I'll trust the texts the police confiscated over her. SHE is the one who went on Megan Kelly & said to the world that story they made up. She's no Patty Hearst, with Stockholm Syndrome, going along with what her captors made her say & believe. :sad2:

Unfortunately, that money is probably now going to be used to pay back all the people who gave to this homeless man scam.

I doubt GoFundMe will ever get much money back since the two spent it all at the casinos & trips and on fancy handbags & such. They might get the car. But, cars devalue as soon as they leave the showroom. And this one us now used.

The posts of mine and @kimblebee you quoted were in reference to another Fund; donations for the victims of a terrible tragedy. I think your comments are more about whether or not the contributors to the scam will be reimbursed by GoFundMe, which perhaps has some sort of insurance to cover this type of thing? I'm not sure if it's reasonable to expect them to vet every Fund to make sure it's not a scam or if they have any actual liability. To a point, it's a risk people take in contributing.

I know you & Kimblebee were talking about a different fund. GoFundMe is a for-profit company. The money they charge per fund is profit to them. They have stated that every single person who gave money to the homeless man's scam fund will be reimbursed. That money has to come from somewhere. It's doubtful that they will get even much of it back from the 3 scammers as they spent it all. If GoFundMe doesn't have insurance to cover this type of situation, then it comes out of their profits - as in, the fund you & Kimblebee are talking about, which was a considerable profit.

When facing charges it's a standard defense to go on the offense against your co-conspirators, and it sometimes works.

But selfies she posted of her and her now ex-boyfriend in Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, prime seats at Broadway's Hamilton, etc. plus her sudden addiction to expensive designer handbags are damning evidence that she's attempting a new scam.
