(2014-2020) Disney's GRAND FLORIDIAN RESORT & SPA + VILLAS Information & Questions

Not open for further replies.
Hi All-
DH & I are staying at GF for the first time in September (labor day week). We've stayed at my beloved Poly for the last few trips, but knowing the quiet pool will be closed (& not sure I'm over the bungalows yet), we're taking this as a good opportunity to try another resort....and since we're in walking distance for Tonga Toast & Dole Whips  & still on the monorail, we thought GF would be the best choice!

So after reading some of these pages (sorry, I just haven't gotten through all of them) I have a few questions that I'm hoping you wonderful GF Folks could answer:
1) We booked a Lagoon View room--(non CL which seems like so many of you do book :worship:) we've requested a King Bed, and I know we'd like a balcony but other than that I'm stumped. Boca Chica seems like it would provide the best Lagoon View rooms...is that true? Do any rooms that are technically Lagoon actually have a theme park view? I looked on Touring Plans site & it seems like some in Conch Key do, but I'm wondering if that's true? Any advice here would be GREATLY appreciated! The resort seems like it's not too spread out so I don't think I'm worried about location to the main building, but please correct me if I'm wrong here too.

2) Many of you have mentioned getting pixie dusted to an upgraded room or even to CL if I remember correctly. Does this happen often at GF? Or is this a thing of the past--perhaps when there was construction or room rehabs going on? We are going during a rather slow time of year & one year we were upgraded to a Theme Park view (from Standard view) at the Poly, so I know it happens at other resorts, but it seems like pixie dust is very generous at GF! :)

3) There was also mention of Gasparilla Grill being down for renovations at some point soon. Are the dates known yet? I've tried searching but I wasn't very lucky...

4) Lastly, are there really no doors on the vanity part of the bathrooms??!! DH likes to sleep-in while in WDW & I'm like "I'MINDISNEYWORLDIMUSTDOALLTHETHINGSNOW!!!" :flower3: Seems rather odd/silly that a Flagship resort would not have a door on the bathroom portion where guests get ready. I'm sure he'll sleep through the hair blowing, but maybe not the light coming through to the hallway? I dunno...just seems really odd to me.

Thank you all in advance for your insight & I love looking at all the photos people post! I'm very excited to stay at GF & someday I'll get through all the posts so I can know everything about the glorious GF!! :teeth:

I just wanted to say that we will be there that same week and I'm getting so excited (my 60 day window opens at midnight tonight). I'm hoping the posted timetable for Gasparilla Grill is accurate and stays on schedule. I'm afraid inevitable delays will have it closed during our stay (we arrive on 9/8 for 9 days). I am/was planning on eating there often, so fingers crossed. We moved our reservation from the Poly to avoid closures etc., but I know it's not the end of the world if it is closed.

We also have a non-CL lagoon view booked. I was thinking of Big Pine Key but now I'm leaning toward Boca Chica as a request. That lagoon view just seems more appealing to me!

Good Morning! :wave2:

No trip actually planned but I was playing around and I now wish I would remember the dates and or deals I used for my fake trip. Cause I saw something that wasn't right or if it was KOOL...An Outer Building TPV & Outer Building CL were the same price per night $674(or something around that price). I know which one I'd pick..

Hoping for a day trip soon to visit Blue and another Disney loving friend :rolleyes1:upsidedow ;):wizard: . I know you've been a bit under the weather but feel better soon:crutches:

Ahhh, to be upgraded to the Walt suite is my fantasy! :cloud9: pixiedust: The Roy suite would work just as well, tho! :thumbsup2 (hi, ahcupcake)
:wave2: Hi grannyminnie

Here is a mini report on our June RPC stay. I have already posted most of my lounge photos so I won't repeat those. We had a wonderful stay and found all CM's to really have a great attitude, several really stood out that we had not had a lot of interaction with before.

We arrived around 4pm, we were not met curbside and had to track someone down to check in. Not a big deal as we know the process but would be problematic for someone new. This has been an ongoing issue for us at GF, does not really bother us but they do need to improve this. We were in 4025 and were with several friend/family groups but did not make any requests to be close together although some of us were anyway. Room was very clean and in good working order, was surprised at the level of wear and tear on some of the furniture already. Nothing bad just a few nicks and water marks but it is obvious that guests really don't take care when using the room. There was a new (last stay for us was April 2015) welcome gift that was a much nicer chocolate. Will take a photo and post later.

Had problems with our magicbands and it took a long time to get it fixed and even after the CM brought them back they did not open the door so that required another trip. Room was ready when we arrived, our request was quiet location.

Lounge: The food was very good on this trip. Wish I had taken photos of the black grouper. The best dish I have had CL by far. They had done away with all the fried adult appetizers which I appreciated. There was a larger variety of food than in the past for adults. The children's selections were problematic as they remained the same all nights. However, they had added some dessert and fruit items in addition to the pbj and ham and cheese that were offered. Only the WINE service was served, beer and cordials were still self service. Wine service was friendly and ample, did not have the negative vibe that BC did with alcohol.

Carving Station seemed like a nice addition but we don't eat red meat so we skipped it. It seemed to be the same Prime Rib every time. Was told that they had considered a pasta station but lacked some electrical components to make it work in the lounge. We would have loved the pasta station. Food was generally replenished. Only saw problems with keeping bread in the afternoons. So many spreads, dips etc and basically one bread and lots of crackers. The bread was always emptied immediately. Only, on our final day did I see bread available later during the service. We missed a lot of the breads they used to offer. At home I try to eat healthy and low carb but loved the bread and flavored butters at GF.

The flowers on the table in the lounge were a nice touch. Warning; small rant ahead. Too many guests were using their bare hands to pick up food in the lounge. I also find it very rude to hover over the food and stand there and eat, no plate, just picking up whatever catches your fancy. Some of these guests were children that clearly needed supervision. However, a large majority were adults or older teens. I think they need to publish a VERY DETAILED etiquette guide for the lounge, as things that seem like common sense have not been taught to a large portion of the population.

I had the opportunity to meet Kim Marinaccio the new GM and found her to be very personable and involved in the resort. It was obvious to me that she cared about every aspect of the resort experience for guests and I have high hopes for the future. To me her attitude was directly reflected in the CM's attitudes. I expect to see more changes ahead.

RUMORS: Rumors gathered during our trip, please keep in mind that these are just rumors.
-King Deluxe Turret becoming a bookable category
-Seasonal and frequent lounge evening menu changes
-return of rotating children's menu in the evening
-True Luxury refurb on the suites
-Also please note that absolutely no one indicated this was happening but did mention a LOT of RPC guest feedback had requested that RPC be an adults or age exclusive building.
-Outsourcing of Texting Service (really hope this does not happen)

Overall, despite the intense heat for the first week in June we had a wonderful trip. The texting service continues to be a huge positive for CL. The food was as good as it has been in several years. Still not where it was years ago but I do have hope that things will still improve.

Finally, would like to thank Mejay, Vonnie, Sherrie, Chuck, Annie, Gayle and Patty for making our vacation special. Outstanding CM's

baler31, :thanks:for your review. I have some friends down there now, staying at the WL this trip and they had magic band issues as well.ICK on the guests touching the food without utensils
I like some of the rumors, especially about RPC being an adults/age exclusive building( I said that a few years ago and a friend got a little mad but I said it cause of all the unmannerly ill-behaved kids, but I guess that more the parents fault)....I like the idea of a seasonal lounge menu.........I miss the CM's you mentioned and a few you didn't

Hi! :wave2: I haven't walked it since the VGF went up, but hopefully it's still a nice, peaceful, and uncrowded place to take a stroll.

Thank you so much for your detailed review. I really appreciate hearing the good, the bad, and the rumors! :)

Hi mmmears ....Are you still hoping to get a 2016 spring break trip in? I need a DL trip so we can meet up

:eeyore:

Thanks for the review. I like the idea of a pasta bar. My son would love it. I have younger kids so I would be against Rpc being a certain age. we are in Disney so I expect to see kids everywhere. I dont think all the bad behavior is from young kids. Have a great day everyone.
We cant wait for our trip!

I have to admit that the thought of "etiquette classes" before entering the lounge have me chuckling, but I absolutely agree that people need it. We've seen some awful behavior in CL lounges over the years... :rolleyes1

Good Morning! :wave2:

:eeyore:

Good morning! Hi ahcupcake! Yes, we are planning something for Spring. And yes, you do need to book a trip to DL!

My brother lives in FL and I was hoping that for one of our resort days that he and his wife could come hang out with us at the GF. I'm planning on getting a cabana that day. Does GF charge a resort fee for the day for visitors? I'm assuming they can't come to the CL lounge with us but that they wouldn't have any issues coming to our room or the pool and hanging out in our cabana with us? Is that true? It'd be nice if we could buy them a CL guest pass for the day!

Awesome review! Thanks for taking the time to share:) I can hardly wait to go back in October. At least I won't have to worry about the Deluxe Queen since it's already a bookable category. I really hope the rumor about the turret room is true! The pasta bar would be fantastic, especially since they got rid of all the fried food - I'm glad my kids like sushi! It will be interesting to see if things change between now and October (food offerings). It does always amaze me to see people using their hands to pick-up food items in the CL lounge, and it irritates me when parents allow their small children to get their own food (and I have seen this too often in buffet restaurants which is why we try to avoid them now, if possible, and go to family style restaurants like GG if we want characters).

Anyone know if there are high chairs in the RPC lounge? And don't worry- we won't be letting my LO get his food! What is wrong with some people.

Hi Friend!

Wow rumors about RPC being an "adults" only type of building. I'm wondering what age is considered an adult? 16, 18, 21? Not that we have plans for going anytime soon, but would have to think about staying at the GF if that is the case with an age associated with the main building.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer.

One other great thing about the GF if you have small children is the Alice in Wonderland splash pad just outside the hotel. My five year old granddaughter visited every afternoon when we got back from the parks and could have spent hours there. It is such fun for young kids, probably saw kids there up to about 9 or 10 but mostly younger. She made friends with other kids and it was a perfect late afternoon treat for her. There are dozens of lounge chairs for parents to sit and watch.

A CM told me that those rumors have been flying around for a while about it becoming an adult only building and that there apparently is no truth to it. Who knows.

I seriously doubt they will make RPC adults only. They allow children 10 and older at V&A, and children age 10 are considered adults on the dining plan -LOL. They don't even have an adults only hot tub - which I would really appreciate since there are often more kids than adults in the hot tub using it as a swimming pool. My kids are older (17 and 12 this fall), so I wouldn't mind "adults only" which would probably just mean age 10 and over, but I don't expect it since it's WDW. It would be nice if they would at least make a floor of RPC 10 and over. I love kids (especially my 5 and 2 yr old nephews), but I've already been at that stage of my life. When we were at BC in June, our neighbors' young children woke us up at 6:15 every morning, squealing for 45 minutes until they left. It would be nice not having to worry about who your neighbors might be if you like to sleep late on vacation.

I know :) However, the promising part is the DH AGREED to Sugarloaf! So I am eagerly awaiting to find out which Candlelight Processional DS14 will be singing in and to book a few nights! Maybe I can just bring my girls..last year the HS was with Whoopi. He's a freshman this year, and they are in the planning phase I think

That sounds wonderful! And how nice that your DS will be participating in the CP...:goodvibes We will be at WDW in December too...just booked a CP dining package...Maybe we will get to say HI!! :wave2:

Hi All-
DH & I are staying at GF for the first time in September (labor day week).

:teeth:

Our friends had a terrific room in Boca Chica that was LV and had a king bed....only thing is that it was a dormer room..so smaller balcony..still lovely...I will try and post a pics or two...it was room number 8433...

As for the bathroom/dressing rooms area...while the sink/dressing area does not have a door there is a doorway that leads to it..and it is located off the entrance hallway...so does not open out to the main room and is distinctly separate ..the bathroom itself..with the commode and bathtub is behind a closed door...::yes::

I just 'blundered' upon this board and wanted to share that we have just booked four nights at the GF for the third week of September to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We have a niece who is a Disney Travel Planner and she is taking care of the details. So far I have requested a Lagoon view, a couples massage and a nice dinner at Norcoossee. As long as we have been going to Disney, my wife has wanted to stay here, and with the Florida resident rate, it really isn't too bad. Four nights with park hopper tickets, and the dining plan cost the same as a small domestic automobile... or so it seems. We have stayed previously in the Contemporary and several of the mid priced resorts over the years, but this being a big anniversary, we decided to splurge a bit. So, what should I be planning for this trip, other than what I have stated already?

Tractor Tom in Okeechobee, FL

Sounds like you have some great plans in place already! Congratulations on your 40th anniversary! :goodvibes Quite a milestone! Make sure that that detail is listed on your room reservation..and on your dining reservations as well...we have gotten some very nice desserst on our anniversary trips! :wizard: Disney florist has some very things if you'd like an in room type of celebration...even champagne and roses...You might want to look into that...Have a grand trip!

Here is a mini report on our June RPC stay. I have already posted most of my lounge photos so I won't repeat those. We had a wonderful stay and found all CM's to really have a great attitude

I think they need to publish a VERY DETAILED etiquette guide for the lounge, as things that seem like common sense have not been taught to a large portion of the population.

Thanks for the review Baler...I have to agree that the CMs at the GF and in RPC in particular take the meaning of customer service to a great level...:thumbsup2 As for the lounge etiquette....I agree again...lol.... ...they also need to list a dress code!!!! But overall we always enjoy our lounge time...and get a few laughs from our observations too.... The rumors are very interesting..have heard many over the years..but not really seen any come to fruition...lol... Glad that you enjoyed your trip....

1) Last time we went (it will be two years in August) we got a Lagoon View and had a view of MK (we were in Boca Chica). I understand a lot of rooms are like that, you just have to look over the balcony to the left/right to see the castle so its not technically a theme park view.

3) According to WDWMAgic.com, Gasparilla is closing August 23 and re-opening to guests on September 5th: http://www.wdwmagic.com/dining/gasp...grill-closing-for-refurbishment-in-august.htm

4) There are no doors, but I found that the noise/light wasn't really an issue. Unless your DH I a REALLY light sleeper, I don't think you'll wake him up getting ready!

That is my understanding too....:thumbsup2

Boca Chica is an out building that I always recommend...as I like its location on the property...close to the courtyard pool and boat dock...but lots of folks are just as happy with Big Pine Key...Either way..for a LV room I think that you can't go wrong...

I think the Gasparilla Grill opens again on Sept. 5th.

We have family that live in Florida and have visited us during our stays...I'm gonna put my flame suit on right now....:firefight..lol...they also
spent time with us in the CL lounge....We simply ask the CL CMs at the desk if this is ok..would never do so without asking...and have not been told other wise...Not something I would do at a busier time like during evening appetizers..but as I said it never been a problem...HTH :)...As for charging extra for a day guest in a cabana..I'm not really sure..I do know that you can add someone on as a day guest...I would suggest checking with IPO...they are a wealth of information...

Anyone know if there are high chairs in the RPC lounge? And don't worry- we won't be letting my LO get his food! What is wrong with some people.

Your post make me literally LOL!! :rotfl:There are high chairs...with cute Mickey cut outs on them...and as LindaM pointed out there are small kids sized table and chairs also....I will look and see if I have any pictures of them...There is a nice designated area for the kiddies with a TV and the little tables and chairs...:happytv:

That's cute. My kiddo would love a little chair.

:thumbsup2 Hope I have a pic or two to share of them....

Hi Friend!

Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer.

Gina HI!! Good to "see" you!! :goodvibes Hope all is well with you and your family! Hope that you can plan a WDW trip soon! Isn't a Disney adult over the age of 10!!?? ;) At least dining wise...lol...

:thumbsup2 Such a good thing to point out...I think that the Alice splash pad was such a great addition for younger families....I like the way the area is enclosed too...but yet feels so open right there on the beach....Its just too bad so much of the lovely beach is now gone due to that and the VGF addition...

Follow and Trish Great pics!!! Thank you for sharing!!

granniyminnie :wave2:

ahcupcake As they say...see ya real soon!! :goodvibes

dispro My fellow BWInner....lol...How is the planning going....I know fall trip first....lol...But its fun to have another trip to think about ::yes:: ....

Hope that all of my fellow GF fans are having a fabulous Friday... princess: preppy GF gal who can't wait to get to the 60 day mark... eventually...lol.. to make new FPP!! :dance3:

Thanks for the info about guests Blue!! I know some hotels have resort fees for guests but it sounds like GF is a little more relaxed if we have family visit and stay with you while they are there! Good idea to email IPO - I didn't think about that! Once I know when my brother and wife can join us and what our plans are that day, I'll email IPO with some specific questions.

Have a great weekend everyone!

dispro I see that you posted while I was posting my big old multi quote...lol...
Thanks for asking about my trip planning:) The funny thing is, my December BWI trip is pretty much planned (so excited that Neil Patrick Harris will be at the candlelight processional the night we are going...I hope it doesn't change), but all we've done for our October RPC trip is book the room and dining. We still need plane tickets and MNSSHP tickets before it's official! I can hardly wait to listen to the band...and breathe in that wonderfully fragrant air that is so distinctively GF!!

Dispro...Get that fall planning done...we haven't finished ours yet either..lol...love that GF scent too...a friend if mine recently bought a case of the spray mist on ebay...and shared a bottle with me....I use it sparingly. ..and just love inhaling that fragrance. ..it almost transpots me right to that lovely lounge....:cloud9:

Here is a nice RPC lounge pic....2015-07-10 21.20.05.jpg
