Survivor 41

I don’t care for any of the contestants this season.

I just enjoy a good blindside, especially if its the annoying, cocky players who think they run the game.

We started to rewatch the series a few months ago. Right now we are in 15 and it has been unintentionally hilarious. There is a scene with them trying to move big Raiders of the Lost Ark looking spheres in the mud and I was crying laughing. Best quote, "Dave, you're still naked."

I am very liberal but thought the way they went about the "you guys" thing was over the top. Simply start saying, "come on in." If someone says something, then a quick, "we are trying to be inclusive" would be enough. They are humble-bragging about how inclusive they are trying to be, and it did not work for me.
I agree..my first thought was "oh here we go with another woke show"

I am surprised that I like so many of the contestants (Xander, Evvie, Fran, Genie, Tiffany, JD, LIana, Shan, and Naseer, and Danny). I am still not sure about Brad and Ricard and think they are going to cause a great deal of drama. I am really glad Xander did not get voted out. Not just because I like him, but because I want to see if the others find and can use that advantage. I think he should have kept it quiet. Now that his entire tribe knows about it someone is going to spill the beans and ruin his game.

I didn't think I was going to like the contestants this season but I do. I like Xander, Evvie, JD, the football player and the doctor who went with Evvie last night. I don't like Ricard and Brad. I don't always agree with the all girl or all boy alliances, the one deserved to have been voted out last night. I like how they went back to the no food format. I also wish they would bring back the more physical challenges and not all these puzzles. For those of you who have been watching for a long time, remember when they would come back from the challenges all beat up? I also don't care for the idols. Lets see how a season goes without them and not tell the players there aren't any. And I hate how they whisper and confer with each other during tribal council. If they want to change the vote, figure out a way to get the message across. Once you're seated, you have to stay seated.

The whole discussion about whether to keep, modify, or jettison "Come on in, guys!" was ridiculous. It's a pretty gender neutral term. It's not my favorite, but I see nothing offensive about it. I'm more used to y'all, but "guys" is fine. If your knickers get twisted because someone says, "Come on in, guys," maybe you're not cut out for Survivor. And if Jeff truly wanted to stop using the phrase, he could've just done that instead of making a big thing of it.
I started doing some research on "guys" after that show.

"Guys" was originally meant as an insult to someone because of Guy Fawkes in 1605. Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up Parliament to restore Catholicism in England. He was caught, tortured and eventually jumped off the scaffolding in order to kill himself instead of letting the government do it. Each year, on November 5th, (Guy Fawkes Day), effigies of Fawkes and the others are burned to celebrate the foiling of their plot. The effigies were known as "guys" and the term morphed into meaning the man was of low character or creepy.

The term eventually became a generic term for men and is now used as a gender-neutral term. However, when seeking advice from etiquette experts and some feminists, you are advised to not use that term, especially in workplace environments.

I just thought I'd share the history with you. I found it interesting. I hope you do, too.

As for last nights vote... I completely disagreed with it.

Over time some of the things just sorta happened and completely changed the game until the next thing did. I actually didn't mind the chaos at first when seasons back someone (and I forget who) just got up and started the whole thing of talking openly at Tribal because it seemed like up until then no one thought you could do that but with Survivor there seems to be a decent amount up to letting things evolve (meaning it didn't seem like they explicitly forbade people from talking at Tribal Council just that no one ever did it before). However, I am getting to where you're at where it's so overt and done for so long you kinda wish they would figure out some other way.

You're so right about the past challenges, def. a lot more mental games for quite a while now that you miss more varied style.

With Brad I'm iffy on. What I did like is his quick thinking to run via the beach to get ahead of the two getting water to spy and then run right back to camp. In the past generally I've only seen someone happen upon people talking or use a hideout rather than split second "I can beat them and hide" thinking. But there's something about him that kinda rubs me the wrong way.

That was interesting-thanks for sharing that!

One thing that bothered me a little was the first time Jeff brought it up, Evvie said she didn’t have a problem with it (after everyone else stayed silent) but the next day a man says he has an issue with it and then it’s done. I felt like it was a little dismissive of Evvie. But to be honest, I never even realized it was a catch phrase. Why didn’t he just say it differently without making such a production out of it if it bothered him?

I felt like it was a little dismissive of Evvie.
That was part of why I felt it didn't come across as genuine and I would agree it did end up coming across as dismissive of Evvie's opinion.

I got to thinking and if he really wanted to change it, the production wanted to change it because they felt it was an outdated, insensitive term I feel the best way would have been to ask the contestants privately (like have them answer a survey on it) and you didn't even have to make it so it was known who answered what so you would go in blind and just take their answers at face value not considering gender identity, sexual orientation, etc. That way no one has to feel singled out, that way everyone has a voice, and that way you know if it's consensus versus just one or two out of eighteen people. And not that those one or two people's voices don't matter but at least you would know more about the actual viewpoint.

The way it was done it just wasn't doing justice to the actual meaning behind changing it, IMO at least.

I thought last night's vote was foolish. Sure, keep the woman who barely completed her portion of the challenge, because you want a "women's alliance". I think they're counting on some kind of merge/tribe switch, but one might not be forthcoming. They are just making themselves weaker.

As to the "Come on in, guys!" faux controversy--Jeff could have easily changed it and not made a big deal out of it. "Come on in, gang!" would have worked, or "Come on in, everyone!" , something like that. I was annoyed that one person said he thought it might be offensive, after he pondered it, so they changed. You're always going to find someone, somewhere, who's offended by anything.

I agree, when it happened the first couple of times, I was like "OMG, did that really just happen?!" but now I'm over it and the players are so dramatic.

I did think that was a great move, however, he should have kept his mouth shut when he got back to camp. You can't trust anyone. I think his eyes are what kinda freaks me out, he has weird eyes.

Does anyone remember a long time ago when they didn't merge the tribes until there was only one person left on the one tribe? That was awesome! I forget her name. I wish they would do that again, that twist would sure surprise the all-girl alliance.

Agreed. That just makes me think more about alliances. In the distant past alliances were a sorta "are they in one, hmm not sure whose a part of that alliance" and now it just seems like it's fairly out there who is part of what and the open talking at Tribal is a big reason. There was more I think intrigue when things were in the shadows.

lol okay now that you mention that he does

That was Stephanie and Bobby John. Stephanie was the last one left. I think she went one to be the final 2 or 3 that season.

I think the all-girl alliance is played out. There have been players in the past that won that may not have been excellent at certain physical challenges (Sandra) but were mentally able to outwit/outplay/outlast. I'm not seeing it at the moment for who survived last night's tribal. So far I think the person is playing too emotional and paranoid. Will see.

Yeah, I feel like Brad is just one riceless day away from losing it. I thought I would really like him--he brings mad skills to the game and is a hard worker.
