New Credit Card Authorization Holds

Good grief o_O

?? Was this directed at my post? Please elaborate.

I'd prefer to just preload my folio account with cash/gift cards. I usually bring down gift cards but charge everything to the room. Hopefully someone will get back to us if they've had success.

Yes, this is exactly my point. This is a very easy, worthwhile alternative to avoiding the credit card holds. It still gives you the option to charge to your band, without the hassle/worry of the authorization holds. This is why, IMO, there's no need to stress over the auth holds when this solution (among others) is readily available.

Unless the policy has very recently changed, pre-loading gift cards against room charges is not allowed.

You just wont be happy until you have the last word on this subject and nobody posts a differing opinion than yours, for whatever reason. You continually dismiss every concern, and the pre-loading is already not an option, it is not an alternative. Given what we know now, it won't exist as an option when the new rules roll out either.

And to suggest that the hold will somehow magically be offset by a lower charge, suggests you do not understand how holds work.

Gosh I hate they are changing their policy! I understand an initial authorization for incidentals, but I am not keen on them authorizing my card multiple times during my stay. They charged my card in error last summer and after reversing the transaction, it took over a week for our funds to be released by our financial institution.

The only equivalent I can think of is when AKL "tested" going cashless, I'm not sure if they still are. But when they went cashless, they allowed a cash reserve to be created for the folio.

I understand people are concerned, however, since this has yet to be implemented and no one has experience yet, can we wait and see how this plays out in real life, instead of getting snarky with each other for differing opinions. Everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions without being put down for them. Let’s all play nice, please? We all have to live in the same big sandbox.

It is as much a sign of the times as anything else. Electronic fraud, identity theft, people skipping out on charges without paying etc. I causes merchandisers and service providors to do more to protect themselves while potentially harming some their honest and loyal customers. I work in the Oil and Gas field and have for years. At one point I worked for our Retail division and we have a propriatery credit card handled by an outside vendor. Part of the negotiation of that contract involved allowances for bad debt. In other words what percentage of charges would never be collected. I guess I should not have been shocked but we process CC's propratery and third party (Visa, MC, AE, debit, etc.) for over 14,000 retail locations (gas stations) the prevelant thought is that 2% of that debt would be bad. Think about that a site with gas and c-store sales may do $320k a month of which 80% is on a cc. Take that times 14,000 stations times 2% and that money is never collected. That's just one company. That's one of the reasons you pay more for everything. That cost gets added back to everyone to account for the deadbeats.

Does not take long to understand why companies like Disney have these policies.

Here's the detail from the site

Payment Card Policy
For stays including or commencing on or after February 27, 2019, if you choose to place a payment card on your hotel folio account for expenses and incidental charges, the following terms and conditions apply:

  • An authorization hold for the remainder of any balance due on the reservation and an additional $100 for estimated incidental expenses will be placed on the card on the scheduled arrival date. Additional authorization holds will be placed on the card, through and until the end of check-out day, as incidental expenditures exceed the amount previously authorized on the card.
  • If the card on file is declined for the required initial authorization hold, you must provide another card or other means of payment for charging privileges.
  • If an incremental authorization is declined, charging privileges for that card will be removed and you will be required to provide an alternate means of payment for any outstanding balance and/or future incidental charges.
  • For reservations longer than 5 days, the card on file will be charged the current balance on the hotel folio(s) on every fifth day of your stay and on the day of check-out. Additional authorization holds and charges will be placed on the card as specified in these terms and conditions.
  • Subject to these terms and conditions, your charging privileges will continue through and until the end of check-out day. If expenses are posted to your hotel folio(s) on check-out day, the card on file will be charged for these expenses on check-out day or the day after check-out.
  • If you choose to change the method of payment from the card you placed on file, you must do so using online check-in prior to arrival or at the front desk. The acceptance of the alternate payment form may be subject to different terms and conditions.
  • You represent that you have the right to and do authorize the owners of the Walt Disney World Resort and/or their affiliates to charge the card(s) linked to your hotel reservation(s) the full amount due, which may include any balance due on your hotel folio(s), including incidental Disney Resort hotel charges, parking fees, rental fees, extensions of your stay, smoking recovery fees, any property damage or loss due to your negligence or willful conduct, and any other miscellaneous charges. You understand that your card(s) will be charged for all amounts due on your folio(s) without any further action on your part based on the authorization you have granted.
  • Acceptance of a card payment is subject to approval by the issuing financial institution; the transactions that appear on your itemized folio(s) will be charged to your payment card account(s) that you have previously placed on file and will be transmitted electronically without further approval from you and that your personal liability for this account is not waived if another person, company or association is billed, but fails to pay.

Thanks @tex1989!

So does this confirm that there will be another $100 hold placed every time your spending passes the previous $100 hold? It does I think.

Additional authorization holds will be placed on the card, through and until the end of check-out day, as incidental expenditures exceed the amount previously authorized on the card

Hopefully everyone that might be affected by this change will read the notice!

I myself will probably not charge to room anymore. Bummer, it was kind of fun. :(

We are going May 18 through 25 and I received this today. So I would guess everyone who has a reservation after the February 27 date should receive this notice.

And yes this says they will put another hold on your card every time you pass the $100 mark on charges back to your reservation.

I can't even imagine the amount of holds we would have by the end of our trip! :rotfl:

Just came here to post that I got an e-mail for my upcoming BC reservation! I am very happy Disney is e-mailing guests to alert them of the change. :thumbsup2

I called today as we are going this April and they will charge after each $100.00 is reached so if you go to one meal with Family say the first night they take anything over the first $100.00 so ongoing each time .My way was using magic band and thru out stay go and pay with gift cards that you cant put on ahead .I dont think this is a good change might as well not have magic bands and start taking everything with you again .MY opinion thanks

Wow, if you think this thread is snarky or deserves an appearance by the thought police....I really don't know what to tell you.

Now that we see this somewhat officially, it really does sound like, hold, charge, hold, charge, hold, charge, rinse and repeat. The problem is, those holds will eat into a guests available limit awfully fast at that pace. Disney never actually collects that money, but guests won't be able to touch it. I'm actually kind of baffled that they think this wont be a problem. I'll bet it won't take very long for people that don't think this through or don't pay attention to this because 'thats not how it worked before' to get themselves in a tight spot while at WDW, and take it out on the CM's. I see a lot of headaches for both the CM's and the frustrated guests while this rolls out. The Magic bands are sort of encouraging people to bring this upon themselves.

Guessing we will be done charging back to the room :( We do that then pay off each night with a Disney gift card. Would like to hear what the final policy will be as far as being able to have a gift card on file. Someone reporter earlier they told them they could. If this is the case that is a change from the past.

Ideally it would be nice if they asked you at the time of check in (online or in person) what amount you expect for MB purchases during your trip and do the authorization for that initial amount --- plus any balance due on room only ressies. When you check in at the desk they should be able to add gift cards/cash to apply to the account.

The $100 limit seems way too low for WDW and maybe they should be asking the guest what amount they want to do a pre-authorization for instead.

This screams “There are enough bad actors that we need to make any potential issues that may arise between you and your card issuers.(which is what they are doing) Who are better equipped legally and functionally to deal with negative outcomes… ALSO this is why we can’t have nice things!!!”
