A "Common object" you don't have in your home

I cut pizza with kitchen scissors. However, my husband loves the chopped salad on RCI cruises and got himself a pizza cutter to use on similar salads---so now we have a pizza cutter that cuts salad but not pizza :rotfl:

I never had a rice cooker until we moved here and someone moving back to the states gave me hers that she had bought to work on 220. I thought it sounded like sucha silly thing, unitl i had one. OMH did I fall in love. I love it for quick easy lunches---toss in whatever veggies or cooked meat I had in the steamer basket and rice on the bottom with whatever spice I was in the mood for, and press a button and 10 minutes later there was a good, hot meal. Also works twith a can of beans to in with the rice, and maybe some cajun seasoning. Mmmm.

Anyway-- the rice cooker broke after a fall onto the tile floor, so we replaced it with the Instant Pot and gave away the crock pot (since the Instant Pot can also do that). I use that for rice a couple of times per week, and love using it to make sweet potatoes quickly and easily.

My oldeset has a rice cooker in the dorms and loves being able to have semi real, hot food, if they miss the meal times.

Speaking of rice cookers, will someone please explain the benefits of having one? My DH and I have had probably half a dozen people randomly suggest we get one in the past several months. I cook rice a couple times a week but it's the kind of thing that is already so easy -- pot of water and rice -- that I don't see how having a dedicated gadget would be worth it. But then everyone seems to be raving about rice cookers lately, so I feel like I must be missing something. :confused3

It's easy. Just dump in the rice and water and hit cook. It cooks evenly, doesn't burn, doesn't have to be watched or stirred, and shuts off when it's done. Perfect every time.

Toaster ovens heat up faster, and can be used for both toast and oven. We have a toaster oven, no toaster. I'd say we use it mostly for toasting, but unlike a toaster you can do more with it. My husband likes toasted cheese sandwiches and the toaster oven is perfect for that.
Oh, and it's perfect for leftover pizza-using the toast setting not the oven setting).

Thanks for explaining beucase i have really never known what they were meant to do!

Heating up faster sounds good. I wonder if it is just becuase it is a smaller space? Our oven is fairly small anyway and heats pretty fast.

I make toast in a normal oven so I'm not sure how that is different---just put the pan up near the heating element.

We don't have a microwave. Our old one broke about 5 years ago and we just never replaced it - and we don't miss it at all. We have a small kitchen and I thought the old one took up too much counter space anyways. We just heat things up in the stove or on the grill, takes a little longer but we're used to it now.

When I was single I used my toaster oven to fix things like a single serving of frozen french fries. I also would sometimes buy the refridgerated cookie dough and would cook just 2 cookies at a time in the toaster oven.

You all are about to convince me that I need a rice cooker!!! Except that I have NO storage in my kitchen and would have to store it in the basement and then I would end up not using it because I was too lazy to go to the basement and get it.

yeah, trekking to the basement would defeat the prupose of saving youself time and hassle over using a pot

I have NEVER been in a house in NJ with a garbage disposal. All kinds of houses, never a disposal. I looked it up to see if there was some regulation against it, but there isn't, so I assume they're out there. My brother in law just bought a new build, I'm going to ask him if he has one.

My parents house in NJ was built in 1973 and a garbage disposal was standard for all the homes in the subdivision. Their vacation home near the shore has one too.

Okay - the Tupperware thing...HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?!?!
Well, I basically don't have any need. Anything I can think of a person would use Tupperware for can be done just the same with the bowls and kitchenware I do have. Plastic anything has always skeeved me out a little. I don't have any plastic glasses or bowls or plates either. I think DS's sippy cup and toddler bowl were the last, very many years ago.
Yeah, I still have a few pieces of my mother's vintage Tupperware.

Like a few of these bowls in those awesome 1970's colors.

:goodvibes My DMom had that exact set too.

:lmao:That is practically word for word exactly what I was thinking!

We order real pizzas from some great places which means the slices are as big as my head so we need it for that. We use it for quesadillas, cutting tortillas to make chips etc. I have two because you need a back up pizza cutter.

I have two as well - the large Pampered Chef one and a small cheap one for when that's too big. I cut all kinds of things with them.

Except brownies. I use this:

to cut brownies.

I'd say the most common thing we don't have is a coffee maker.

We also don't have any of those one use gadgets. Remember the create more edges brownie pan? Why pay $30 for that sucker when you can just use a muffin pan if you want more edges?
No meat shredders, strawberry slicers, ez bake pizza ovens, No veggeties, breakfast sandwich makers, or vertical quick egg cookers. No Quesadilla makers, microwave pasta cookers, or pickle grabbers. No toasters with an egg cooker on the side. No pepper preppers, rotating apple pealers and cutters. egg slicers, mushroom slicers, corn kernelers, or avocado slicers. No Taco propers, butter spreaders, or crepe makers. No hot dog makers, microwave spaghetti cookers or Panini presses.
Oh and we're rif raf. As such we don't have place settings with bone discard plates.

Vertical egg cooker? Do tell.

I have a corn kernel remover thingy. That thing is worth it's weight in gold. I can no longer eat corn off the cob and for two years my younger DD only had what they call a "bandaid" on her broken front tooth. She couldn't eat apples, corn on the cob or even pizza without having to cut it up into bite size pieces. Zip, zip, zip and the corn is off the cob. Bonus, no slipping knife that takes out your whole plate.

Why on earth would anybody use a turnip-chopper to cut brownies? I was given that same implement as a gift and had no clue what it was for. I ended up discovering it was pretty good for cutting through large, hard turnips and that's the only thing I've ever done with it.

I do have that - with a timer so it's ready when I get up in the morning!

Brilliant!!

Does anyone remember Good Eats with Alton Brown? He used to call them "unitaskers".

You've never seen the vertical egg cooker? You stick two eggs in it turn it on and it cooks them. Supposedly in a couple of minutes but it takes 20. And then it looks pornographically comical when they come out.

The questions and reviews are hysterical. :lmao:I think I'll stick to a pan or pot. I do have one of those microwave egg cooker things. They're the perfect size for a quick Egg McMuffin type sandwich.

What model is the phone that you have the photos on?

SIM cards are not used for storing photos and videos. What you need is a micro SD card.

See how little I know about these things? I thought I'd need a SIM card to be able to transfer/email my pictures. Can I really just download them onto an SD card without having to activate the phone? (Yes... I not-so-jokingly refer to myself as "techno-stupid!")
