A honeymoon, a 3rd wheel & 3 very full tummies: We get how much food?!?!? 19 Nights DxDP!!!!

33990449616_4ab20ff6c3_c.jpg

Smoked Mushroom Bisque - crispy foraged oyster mushrooms, nasturtium oil, fines herbes $12

Both said it was delicious! Trent isn’t hugely into mushrooms but I had mentioned that they were famous for it and he really felt like a soup. He was glad he followed my advice and I even got a taste – it was creamy and well balanced. Quite rich, but a great start to a meal none the less.

Mmm...I love mushrooms, and this looks yummy!

33646011450_6088e1e7dd_c.jpg

Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee - kumquats, currants, bee pollen $10

And this was the best one yet! Even though we had all had a huge meal we still managed to polish off our own desserts. Perfectly textured with a bold vanilla taste – just such a good way to end the meal!

I don't know if I've ever had a kumquat, but it's creme brulée, so it must be good!

Day 13 – September 28th – Flying Fish Dinner

Flying Fish for us was a last-minute choice. It announced its reopening after our 180 days and, since we were staying at the Boardwalk villas in the middle of our trip I was keen to give it a go. This was, in reflection, one of the best foodie choices we made this trip!

I will admit that I was nervous about booking this restaurant for Peta as I thought there would be a lack of choice and that it may fall short being so into meat and seafood. Luckily, I snagged it last minute after finding that they actually have quite an extensive vegetarian menu. I was cautiously optimistic, that perhaps Peta would actually have a choice of multiple items at each part of the meal. And I neither her, nor I was disappointed!

33364123874_2eaa530088_c.jpg

When we arrived right on our ADR time, we were seated instantly, and right by the kitchen, which is open and gave us a great view over the course of the meal.

Yet again, I didn’t grab her name, but our server was super attentive! She came to check on us frequently, and (perhaps as they had only recently re-opened) was interested to receive feedback on each and every dish we had! After we were seated and the chef had seen us, she also came to check with Peta that she was definitely happy with her options and then after Peta got her meals came to check that it was as expected.

Before we even got started, our server helped us with signature drinks, arranging for the bar to whip Peta and I up some mocktails! Silly me didn’t take a photo and I was busy struggling to decide what to order but they were $8 each (and included as drinks for us). Trent picked a beer of the menu for a chance, but we can’t remember which one. This was, of course not included in the plan.

Trent started his meal with:

33395842053_4a3fbaa9ea_c.jpg

Kurobuta Pork Belly - shank croquette, royal gala appleslaw, bing cherry gastrique, shirred quail egg $13

I barely blinked and this was gone. He said the pork melted in his mouth and was well seasoned. The quail egg on top was a nice touch, but mostly novelty and I don’t think he would have been fussed if it wasn’t there.

I went with a light starter (or so I thought, but this was a generous serve – don’t let the photo fool you!):

34165830666_1079995628_c.jpg

34206418555_27917e45b0_c.jpg

Chef's Selection of Regional Artisanal Cheeses $18

These were, hands down some of the most amazing cheeses I had ever had (and I am seriously into cheese!). This was so worth the stomach ache! The only disappointment was, because they were local, I would be very unlikely to be able to find them back home!

Peta enjoyed:

34206412485_1f1187197d_c.jpg

Peaches and Cream (shown on menu above) - $16

Peta enjoyed this, and liked that it was vastly different from the vegetarian offerings elsewhere. She said it was a light, sweet way to start the meal.

After appetisers, mains came fairly quickly, and the chef popped out to make sure we had enjoyed the starters.

For my main, I chose the:

33395831233_1aef80016c_c.jpg

Maine Lobster Nero Pasta - Golden Tomato Sauce, Young Artichokes, Micro Lemon Grass - $64.00

This was, hands down, the most AMAZING meal I have EVER had (and we are pretty big foodies!). The sauce was creamy and the lobster perfectly cooked. There is NO WAY that I would have ever risked the cost of this meal had we not been on the dining plan, I just wouldn’t have done it. I know I wouldn’t have known what I missed, but this remains my favourite dish of the entire trip.

Being somewhat less of a seafood fan, Trent chose the:

34049100962_78b8735425_c.jpg

Wagyu Filet Mignon - Okinawan Potatoes, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Romanesco, Bordelaise Sauce - $58.00

Trent was almost as thrilled as I was with his main. I had a taste (but he would only share a tiny bite!). This was a nice surprise for him as he had really agreed to indulge in flying fish on my behalf, being the seafood lover of the group! We always preference Wagyu over other beef cuts and it was a close call between ordering this and the bison. It was cooked perfectly medium rare and Trent polished it off very quickly!

Peta went with:

34049107712_1b9ee9c138_c.jpg

Roasted Tofu (see above menu) - $33

She polished this off as well, so we were 3 for 3 on the mains! She said it was the juiciest Tofu she had ever had (and she is usually reluctant to go with tofu because of it being dry or over cooked).

Even though we didn’t really have enough room, the desserts menu looked amazing and we had a hard time choosing!

I went with:

34075859771_40d916f71b_c.jpg

Panna "Carpa" - Strawberry-Lime Consomme, Rhubarb, Buttermilk Panna Cotta, Basil Sugar - $10.00

This was tart and so full of flavour. The rhubarb really balanced off the flavours and the textures went so well together.

Peta and Trent got the same:

34206391525_be7bf46d87_c.jpg

Under the Sea - Valrhona Manjari Chocolate, Chocolate Coral Sponge, Pistachio Sand, Dehydrated Milk Foam, Tasting of Three Sea Salts - $12.00

This was rich, but, similar to mine, had a great balance of flavours and textures. Peta’s was slightly different to accommodate her gluten intolerance but didn’t really look much different to Trent’s. They both finished every mouthful!

I also took delight in ordering an amazing green tea off their substantial drinks menu.

33822374520_7906a73b53_c.jpg

Pricey ($7.50) but such a lovely way to balance dessert and finish an excellent meal! As Trent had not used his drink on the plan, it ended up included under the plan, which was a nice bonus.

Scoring time:

Food – 5/5 – Didn’t think it was possible, but better than our experience at Artist Point – this flies to number 1!

Service – 5/5 – The chef and server checked on us constantly!

Experience – 5/5 – Such a great setting, and sitting near the open kitchen was a nice perk. The restaurant has a lot of character.

LOVED your Flying Fish review! Everything looks like it was lovely. My son and I are having dinner here during our September trip and I am so looking forward to it...even moreso, now! :)

Oh man! It looks like we are really missing out not eating at Flying Fish! Everything looks AMAZING! We are on the regular dining plan this time, though, and with a 20 month old, so it will have to wait.

Wow, I'm so impressed you all still look the same size even after all that food! We go for 16 days, without a dining plan, only eat one or two meals out plus snacks each day (we have a kitchen in DVC villa) and I still go home 4-5lbs heavier. Goodness knows what would happen if I tried the dining plan.

I love the artist point and flying fish reports! We haven't tried either of those yet, but I know we would love them. Looks so good!

Actually we were surprised as well, but I set a new record everyday on the amount of steps walked, and we didn't gain any weight over the trip!
Can't say as much about after the trip - we took home so many snacks that these added to our waistlines for a few weeks before we got back into our usual routine!

That buffet looks very good and super fun! I would have absolutely loved that interaction with Goofy, because he has always been my favorite!

Day 14 – September 29th – Lunch – Contempo Cafe

After breakfast we had head out for a few hours to do some more shopping. This was part of a plan to have a nice relaxing day before heading to MK and enjoying MNSSHP in the afternoon/evening.

We had packed up and checked out early, handed our bags to bell services and was very excited to do our last hotel switch of the trip. This was one I actually wasn’t sure about – BLT. I knew I would love the proximity to MK but I was not sure it would feel Disney enough!

Oh, I was wrong!!!! We loved BLT from the moment we walked in. The pop art of space mountain and other Disney things was amazing and the lay-out was excellent. 2 bathrooms in a 1 bedroom was a massive draw here!

The view was excellent, and, as we had been unable to get a standard room I had chosen a lake view. I faxed a request for the side of the building, and we were granted a perfect view of the water parade (which we loved and had also enjoyed at GF), we also had a great view of the walkway and contemporary main building:

33964330910_356df4dd74_c.jpg

Originally, we had planned to go get lunch in MK, but after checking in and heading up to our room (which was available nice and early) we head over to the contemporary to look at the gift shops. There, the Contempo Café caught our eyes and it looked like it had some nice options.

They were accommodating for Peta, who had a quick chat the chef to sort something out.

She was able to enjoy:

34348275365_cc43ae701a_c.jpg

Caprese Flatbread - with basil pesto, fresh mozzarella, garden tomatoes, arugula and balsamic glaze $10.79 (Made GF)

She wouldn’t usually go with a pizza option but quite enjoyed this. The base was good for GF and the balsamic was a nice sweet addition.

I went with:

33506539284_b706ec8baa_c.jpg

Spicy Chicken Sandwich - spicy breaded chicken breast topped with vegetable-style coleslaw on a multigrain bun $11.49

This was delicious! And I ate it super quick! I didn’t really enjoy the French fries and should have asked for a substitution but the burger was plenty for me. It had a nice kick to it and was just what I had expected. The bun was fresh and I was really pleased by this given I wouldn’t usually choose a burger. The coleslaw was crunchy and balanced it off nicely.

And Trent had:

33964325510_4622a2d520_c.jpg

Chicken Alfredo Pasta - grilled chicken, chef's pasta selection, alfredo sauce, parmesan, and a seasoned breadstick $11.19

This was a huge serve but it was mid-afternoon by now and he was hungry! He said it had a nice cheesy flavour and was surprised by the size of the chicken.

For Dessert, Trent and I both chose a fun seasonal cupcake:

34190196922_4574b2e9fd_c.jpg

Candy Apple Cupcake - $4.69

It was delicious and we ate one and took the other to the room for a later snack (they are huge!)

Peta ordered a GF cupcake and they forgot to bring it (as they did not have them out). As a result of the mistake she ended up with two as some nice pixie dust!

34217573271_db0a25cda3_c.jpg

33537633763_2ab0f3db1c_c.jpg

Gluten Free Cupcake - $3.69

She said they were OK, but reasonable for GF. As a result of the mistake, she too had one to save as a snack for later. They were tiny compared to ours!

Day 14 – September 29th – Dinner - Skipper Canteen

Skipper Canteen is somewhere we were excited about! There were a few things on the menu that looked good and I had snagged a 4pm reservation for our day of MNSSHP. Our server was fun and cracked some very jungle cruise like jokes, but he wasn’t too attentive as the restaurant was packed. Presumably everyone else had the same plan as us – enjoy an early dinner before the party.

The signature drinks looked quite nice so we each got one:

33506513404_95fa9172f0_c.jpg

34217562281_eb50035a80_c.jpg

Punch Line Punch - Tropical Fruit Juices and Mango Puree (also available with a spiced-rim for an extra zinger) $4.5; Both Peta and Trent got this and enjoyed it – Trent had the cayenne pepper spiced rim – it did add a nice kick, which gave it something.

34217567251_09cbcb56a6_c.jpg

Schweitzer Slush - Frozen apple juice and passion fruit with bursting green apple boba balls $5.5; I got this and it was quite tasty. The balls were really good, but it became a bit of a chore to eat them after the novelty wore off. It was very sweet and I didn’t finish it all.

The bread service was sweet and had a honey sauce:

34217559671_0211b05228_c.jpg

Neither Trent nor I like it. The bread was hard and the sauce was sweet but tasted strongly of a mish mash of different spices.

Peta got her usual rolls, but with the sauce, and she didn’t think much of the sauce either.

Peta was EXTRA difficult to feed here – the server gave her the choice of soup or salad for her appetiser, and said he would go consult with the chef about her main. We ordered our starters as the chef was busy and was taking a while to come out.

For me:

33537618263_4abff3f326_c.jpg

Falls Family Falafel - A secret recipe of chickpeas, garlic, onions, lemon juice and herbs with white bean dip and tomato-cucumber salad $8.5

These were just OK, the flavour was OK but a little bland and the texture was far too dry. All I could really taste was the lemon juice. Trent tried them and agreed they were bland as well.

Trent had:

34307336976_7ae3909988_c.jpg

House Made Arepas - slow cooked beef, black beans, tostones and queso fresco $9.5

Similar to me, this looked great, but was lacking in flavour. He said the beef was quite bland but the beans added something.

Peta didn’t want salad, so ordered the only other choice given to her:

34217546031_b25564983d_c.jpg

Ginger's "Croc" of Hot and Sour Soup - Flavored with ginger (not the crocodile), garlic, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar, fished with fresh egg, tofu, and wood ear mushrooms $7.5

And here is where they made a HUGE mistake. Thankfully for us, Peta had only eaten a mouthful or two because of the temperature, when the manager, chef and our server all arrived at our table. The chef asked how the soup was and Peta just commented it was OK, but quite hot still. The chef then sheepishly admitted that our server had mentioned Peta’s gluten free as her requirement and forgotten to mention the vegetarian. We didn’t realise because Peta had only been offered the soup and salad as her choice anyway.

This soup does in fact have a duck stock base and is not suitable for vegetarians.

The manager had come to help rectify the situation, but we weren’t that upset. We were thankful that Peta hadn’t eaten anymore, it likely would have made her sick, both at the thought of eating meat, but also physically it is unlikely her stomach could tolerate meat – she hasn’t eaten any since before the age of 2. We put it down to human error and know these things happen. Clearly Skipper Canteen was the first place we had found on property that could not accommodate Peta.

We were given some fast passes, and the chef explained what he could make for her (NOTHING on the menu is both able to be GF and vegetarian as we found out) some noodles, veggies, rice and curry:

33506488264_0616829fdd_c.jpg

Trent had:

33537609753_f4e909107b_c.jpg

"Tastes Like Chicken" Because it is! - crispy fried chicken with citrus and ginger-scented rice, chili glaze and seasonal vegetables $23

He said the chicken was crunchy but bland (noticing a theme yet?)

I felt like something fresh, so I went with:

33537601273_62b54e3689_c.jpg

"A Lot at Steak" Salad - Grilled Steak, Romaine lettuce, red peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, coriander-mint vinaigrette and garlic chips $19

This may have had a lot of steak, but a lot of it was very chewy!!!!! I didn’t eat that much. And the salad was…..wait for it…….bland!

By the time dessert rolled around, we were keen to move on, but of course we grabbed some anyway.

Peta could only have fruit, the chef said that was all that could be done:

34307332946_13b823509d_c.jpg

At least it was shaped like Mickey! This was a relief for her as her stomach was feeling a little off by this stage anyway.

I got something that sounded quite good:

34308025526_3661d6fa49.jpg

Quick Sand! - Jasmine Rice Pudding, Mango Sauce, Lemon Curd, Hibiscus Meringue, and Pineapple $8

And it was! (Bet you weren’t expecting that!!!!). It was creamy and the addition of all the difference textures was nice. Trent tried some and didn’t like it at all, but he’s not a fan of tropical flavours anyway! Not my favourite, but a very solid dish.

Nothing really stood out for Trent (too many tropical flavours!), but he likes cake, so he settled on:

33507193744_ab70dfd1ee.jpg

Coconut Bar with Pineapple-basil Compote and Vanilla Cream - Vanilla chiffon cake with coconut and lime-white chocolate ganache $8

He ate it all, but commented that was more because he hadn’t eaten his whole meal than his enjoyment. Back to my usual description……it was bland. The texture was good, but it was just like a plain cake flavour wise.

And so, the scores……although I suspect you know where these are heading:

Food – 2/5 – it gets a 2 due to dessert, but as you know, everything else was a miss.

Service – 1/5 – I can’t help but think the experience would have been better if the chef had of come out at the start like he was supposed to instead of discussing backwards and forwards with our server. Our server cracked jokes to start but was too busy and inattentive, and obviously did not communicate well with the kitchen. He was nowhere to be found after the incident with the food (embarrassed perhaps?)

Experience – 1/5 – could be great due to theming and if you had a fun server, but, obviously our experience here was dampened quickly but Peta’s experience.

We were seriously excited by the menu, but not at all excited by the dishes we tasted. We were not charged for Peta’s meal (which just means we had an extra credit) and walked away with fast passes in hand which was somewhat useful.

We had planned to eat here for a second time on the last night of our trip, but suffice to say, I got straight on to my Disney experience and change the reservation! It had become clear that, not only could they not accommodate Peta but we didn’t enjoy our food either!

Your Skipper's Canteen experience makes me sad. I was so looking forward to this restaurant. We have 3 Omnivores, 1 Vegetarian and 1 Vegan. I thought that everyone would find something great to eat here.
I may rethink this choice.

That is such a weird mish mash of food. Skipper Canteen hasn't really appealed to me, and I really don't want to eat there after Peta's experience. Disney is usually so great at accommodating food allergies and whatnot. Apparently someone here did not get that message.

We thought it would be a good option too, but unfortunately it was the only place that didn't accomodate Peta well.

It was bizarre! After they made the mistake I thought they would bring her a personalised dish, but what came out was just pretty much anything they could find!
Everywhere else accommodated her so well so at least it was a once off!

Bonus: Day 14 – MNSSHP – Trick or Treat Haul

Thankfully our evening was not dampened by our experience at Skipper Canteen. We were feeling pumped for MNSSHP as we had done the Christmas party before, but not Halloween; and because Halloween is not really celebrated in Australia!

The trick or treating was a fun aspect, but really, we most enjoyed the character meets. I had seen photos on FB or absolutely ridiculous amounts of candy and we didn’t go overboard (partly because we are not huge fans of American chocolate and partly because with all our shopping, we didn’t have much luggage space!).

Despite doing only a few paths we did pretty good!

34190096682_f594802452_c.jpg

And Peta got to collect an allergy token at each stop. We each took in an allergy token to town hall to trade so Peta could have extra treats and they gave us each A TONNE! Check out how many full boxes of cookies we got! Peta was thrilled and made room in her suitcase for these as she loved them, and they aren’t available over here:

Wow, that is awesome! I saw a report or two from last year that for allergy treats people were only given one of each item, regardless of how many tokens they had (so maybe 10 treats in all), but it definitely seems like Peta received way more than that!

It was amazing! I was surprised by the haul but they were giving everyone bags full! Even for just 1 allergy token each! I am surprised to hear they would only give one item each. They were asking everyone in the line what they wanted and we just all said a bit of everything, but even those who just asked for a couple of types of treats were just getting full bags anyway with the one or two things they wanted.
