Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

After my initial panic over the whole thing we decided to go yesterday to Epcot after all. I saw a few people with hand sanitizer (we had ours, too), but I didn't see anyone with a mask and I didn't overhear a peep from anyone talking about h1n1. Actually about halfway through the day I realized that I hadn't even thought about it. There is nothing wrong with being safe, but I am just going to live my life without fear of the swine flu.

Exactly! :thumbsup2

::yes::

Even the thread posts are beginning to die down... Oh no - what will we obsess over now? :lmao:

Just kidding, it's been good to read mostpoints here. ;) :cool1:

I'm one of those that was in borderline panic mode, but if I had a trip planned tomorrow, I'd be hopping on a plane! :thumbsup2

The latest news I've heard is that the virus is just like the seasonal flu. Gotta love the media.

Love isn't quite the word I would use...:sad2:

Good call.

CDC's web site now shows LA with 14 confirmed cases.

Aw man! From zero to 14 fast...

The numbers are just so far behind. Are they closing schools and such? Are you guys ok with the weather you guys have been getting down there? We got hammered yesterday with that storm that came through. I have wondered where Brook was today. We lost power yesterday...maybe she has no internet.

Just a quick story about how this is splitting our own society. A friend of mine is a teacher at a school and one of the teacher's aides just returned from a trip to Mexico. Apparently when she went to return to work, the teacher in the class caused a big scene in front of the children, saying she didn't want her in the classroom at all and to not even "think about touching or hugging a child!"

In the end they had to call in the administrators, the HR staff, and union people to settle all of it. It's a shame that this is what the media has created about this. I'm not saying the teacher shouldn't have been concerned, but to wait until that morning and to cause such a scene in front of the kids is a direct result of the "panic" that erupted from this whole thing!

Yeah. It really sucks and that was totally uncalled for. We too had an issue on Friday and it carried over to this morning. I think I posted here before about our district not wanting to allow my kids to return to school this morning because we(my DH and I) had just came back from Mexico on Thursday. The teachers pulled my 10 year old out of the classroom all day and wouldnt let her anywhere near the other kids. This morning when she went to get on the bus, one of the moms went totally crazy and called me irresponsible and a few other choice words. I just think its really sad. Oh and they got to go to school since they didnt travel with us. And my DH is still wearing his mandatory mask at work LOL

My trip's supposed to be in two weeks, but it appears that it may get postponed / canceled. :sad1: I think healthcare organizations around the world have acted well against the virus, but thanks to all the hyping that the media has done, my Df's mother is convinced that her son will most likely get the virus if we go on our trip. :confused3 Of course, judging by the number of cases so far, if the decision was up to me, I'd be cheerfully making last minute ADRs and planning my trip itinerary. Sigh. I know that parents worry, and it makes me feel like a ***** for wanting to swipe out at her for jeopardizing our engagement trip, but I've been dreaming about this trip for years and I've been planning it for months.

Sorry, just had to rant. :headache:

Anyway, I was just wondering. So far, the number of H1N1 cases keep increasing, but what's the recovery rate like? From my digging of news, I've the impression that everyone's worried about the rise in new cases in various parts of the world but out of all the cases so far, how many are currently still plagued by the illness? It seems like quite a number have recovered and the virus is relatively mild. Does anyone know?

I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that pixie dust will carry me through. Back to monitoring the news. :surfweb::rotfl:

DD and I went to Sea World today. We had a great time and I saw no one wearing a mask or acting concerned in any way.

No, he just likes bacon, and mom won't let him have any at home. Rare bacon though, can't be good..................:goodvibes

We just got back from a day trip, and things were kind of quiet, maybe all the news reports scared the crowds away, but I'm sure they will be back shortly with all the free stuff Disney is giving away.

If you read all the reports, you will realize that although a very few people are getting sick across the globe ( and percentage wise it really is a VERY few people) they are all for the most part getting better very quickly. Only in Mexico is the virus strong. We are planning a trip in June with the whole family and there is no way we are cancelling. If I was going with me and my husband without any kids ( as in the previous post) there would be no doubt about going. My husband has a masters degree in public health and works at Yale - they are not panicing there and they have students all over the world.

I hope this helps allay some fears. Live is too short to stay home.

Maybe you guys can provide some info. The North Carolina press conference said today that there were about 30 people in the United States (out of the approx 300 cases) that were still in the hospital. They were not sure why these 30 people were hospitalized and said the CDC was trying to figure that out. Do you guys happen to know if those 30 people (about 10% of those with "confirmed swine flu") are in the hospital as part of their course of illness? Do they have co-morbid conditions that are causing them to be sicker than the ordinary flu?

Did anyone else listen to this news conference today?

I've been following this thread intently and reading it all, but now I must comment based on today's happenings:

1. Here in Canada we are seeing some weird stuff - 1st worldwide case of a person spreading the virus to a pig. This farm worker had vacationed in Mexico, and they figure he sneezed or coughed on the pigs while working. They have now quarantined the pigs and are studying this phenomenon.

2. Very sick infant in Alberta that as of today has been hospitalized. She has not been to Mexico, so they are unsure of where she caught the virus.

3. There were 17 new cases reported in Ontario today, 4 of which are in my city alone! I live in a medium sized city with 300,000 people, so that is a lot. They are 4 adults (2 males/2 females) between ages of 21-29 who have vacationed to Mexico. They are doing ok and are recovering at home, but didn't require hospitalization.

4. One of my students who returned from Mexico in middle of March has been sick, as has his dad (they went on a family vacation) despite long incubation period, the hospital tested him anyway. Talked to Board of Health and they said no worries as he's doing fine and the incubation would have been about 5 weeks - hit close to home as we have lots of pregnant students (alternative school) and my infant son is high risk with asthma and just had ear tube and adenoid removal surgery.

I haven't been more worried about this virus, no more than regular flu, but I always worry a lot about regular flu because I can't get vaccine (allergic to eggs so it makes me really sick), as well as highrisk family members. Mostly because I teach at-risk teens who don't take the best care of themselves. Now that we have 4 confirmed cases in our city, we are starting to get a bit worried as lots of people here vacation to Mexico, as well, we have a huge Mexican farmworker population that has been arriving for work at the greenhouses over the past few months.

I'm sure all will work out, but as I read the CDC numbers and read this thread and see small numbers in whole states, I got worried after hearing the news conference today that spoke of the confirmed cases in our community - for the size of my city, 4 cases seems like a lot.

Good health to all, Tiger

Oh, be careful of the MIL. She sounds more dangerous than the flu!

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! Bless you for working with at risk teens. They really need someone fighting for them! :thumbsup2

Stay safe and keep us posted!

One thing I learned today is that they tested some marines...I think they were in California? And that one of the men with no symptoms came back positive. So, I guess it is possible someone in Canada gave it to the infant and has no idea that they are even sick.

Hopefully this will pass over fast for you guys!

Just got back today. The only people I saw wearing masks were one man last Monday at the Orlando Premium Outlet and the cleaning people at the airport. At the checkpoint, they were wearing gloves.

When we went through the International Gateway at Epcot we were not asked to use the finger scanner.

Most of the cleaning folks wear masks at OIA. And they always wear gloves at the checkpoints, so I guess nothing new...........

I am at WDW right now. It seems no one is thinking about swine flu other than I see people washing their hands more and moms are attempting to get their kids to cover their mouths when they cough but we did see numerous people just outright sneeze and cough without covering at all.

DH and I have been here two days now with no signs of illness.
We have been using hand sanitizer constantly and washing hands a lot.
I noticed the cleaning people are always in the restrooms keeping things clean and refreshed.

In all, things are calm here in the World. :goodvibes
