Poor Denise, poor Riley!

I had a similar situation with Arminda the othe day. She had division homework, and she had a basic understanding of how to do it, but didn't really seem to understand how to actualy do it. I tried to help her, and I think she is getting it better, but I do wonder why I had to show her this when she's in 5th grade! I'm a little worried about it, I think we need to go over her multiplication tables some more too, and as much as I hate it, I think I'll make her practice some division this week. Of course, Corey was very helpful, telling her to just get out a calculator! In his defense though, he did show her a very cool looking way to do multiplication. He drew a box, and put the numbers in that, and figured it out really quickly. I need to figure out what he did, because it looked easier than what I've been doing for the last 30 years!

The box method is lattice multiplication. This is how they are teaching kids to do multiplication. I tutor kids that do it this way and I have mixed feelings about it. This method keeps it organized, but it takes double the time to do.

I am so sorry, they should have honored the price. What a bunch of creeps. So what are you going to do?
There is talk that all the people who ordered the cow print ones got them shipped. I'm going to get DH to call them when he comes home from offshore tomorrow.

I'm sorry I can not go into detail right now but please, please if you are a praying person, please please pray for my baby boy!!! Thank you!!!
I will pray for your family!

The Hancock Fabric Store here is still open and they have a huge selection, but that is so far away. Does Lafayette have any fabric stores? If they have a Joann's I might have to go by there for a visit.
I live in New Iberia and the Wal- Mart doesn't have fabric anymore. I was upset about it and to top it off our Hancock fabric store went out of business. I just thought I would let you know so you won't be disappointed next time you come here.

Well the Wal Mart I am talking about might not be in New Iberia. All those little towns get smushed together by me! If I remember correctly it is a big Wal Mart and you have to go off of 90 to get to it. Last time I went there was around Christmas of last year. Is this one of the ones that was shut down? I might be having to go tomorrow. I just might have a hard time figuring out which one to go to! He works for Hercules Offshore. I guess you two gals might know what company that is? Everyone around here doesn't know who they are.

My DD had a great time at the Hollywood park. She didn't understand why the characters couldn't stay with her all day. She is June obsessed and I am told she followed her around at the character luncheon so closely that June stepped on her! She didn't mind so much though because June spent more time with her after that! :)
I am told my Feliz got rave reviews by everyone, but Hannah didn't want anyone looking at it because she said it was her Einstein dress!
I think she is finally hitting her terrible 2's at 3!
My DH surprised me with a trip for 3 nights when he gets home tomorrow. Jacuzzi tub here we come! I am in a much better mood now! :woohoo:
I'm so glad to have found this group. I really got alot of inspiration for my DW customs that I made. I will post them when she gets back!!!

I have been hearinga lot about this approach lately and personally I think it is total crap. Kids need structure, bottom line. I find that they just do not learn well without it, especially in the younger grades. kids under about 12 in generally take most things literally and at face value. What they expect these kids to do takes higher order thinking skills they just don't have yet. Many of my honors juniors and seniors are not full capable of that yet!

I bet that there are a few kids out there who really benefit from this, but it leaves the kids like Riley totally lost. Riley is all about knowing hard and fast rules. They aren't even encouraging them to memorize their multiplication. Tonight Riley was trying to tell me that you don't need to know them because if you know 2x6 you just double that to know 4x6. Why is that better than just knowing that 4x6=24??????

Even when Riley does "know" what to do, she doesn't have the confidence that she would have if they were focusing on the rules. Every answer she gives is more like a question to me. It is very frustrating.

Riley is a way above average student. The principal wants me to let her test for the gifted program, yet she is sitting in math class totally lost. It's dumb. The principal was trying to tell me that it is a great system because it teaches the kids "HOW" to find the answers so that they can always figure any problems out. I think it's bull. Teach them all the rules, expect them to learn and remember them and there you go!

I'm in Alexandria. I don't know if there are any stores that have closed way down south. :rotfl:I don't go that far south.

As you all may know...I am 40 something....:goodvibes and I have learned two things in life....

First, never sign something without reading it first, and

Second, never make travel plans and depend on someone (money-wise) who is not your spouse.

What happened you ask? My "friend" who I was traveling with to come meet you all at the Big Feb Dismeet....just dropped a bomb on me this morning. She was, for some reason, under the impression that I was paying for her flight ($304) to Disney. :confused3 The topic was never discussed. And it wasn't until this morning after she made flight reservations for us (last night) that she bothered to tell me this information (this morning). She says I agreed to it on a cell phone conversation three months ago. :confused3 Nope not one mention of it for the past 3 months even though we have spent hours talking and planning the whole event. And when she talked to me last night before making the plane reservations....nope no one mention of it then either. :confused3 At that point I had agreed to the $304 and that's how we left it. I was giving her a check this morning. And thats when she sprung it on me that I owe her $608. :sad2:

I am so shocked and hurt that she would make something up like this and lie to me....:sad2: :sad1: Needless to say, I am not going now. I wouldn't trust her at this point. Its not about the money so much as the whole "made up story". Its not even logical that I would agree to something without knowing the prices.

OK I will stop babbling about it now...I just wanted to let the FEB DISMEET people know what was going on. :sad1:

Are you sure you still can't come? And what the heck did she have to say when you told her you weren't paying for her ticket?

I'm sorry I can not go into detail right now but please, please if you are a praying person, please please pray for my baby boy!!! Thank you!!!

Your little one and you are in my prayers. Hope all turns out well.

I sooo thought you lived in New Iberia too. I have a terrible memory! Please excuse me!!!
I pass through there when we go visit the in laws in Tyler, TX.

We do a lot, but we'll make sure to ramp it up right now! I hope everything is going well and I hope that he is safe with his real family!!!! You!!!!!

You just made me cry Denise! Beth, I have been keeping you and your little guy in my thoughts and prayers for a while now and all I can do is this:  I pray things will work out.

Prayers said...hope everything is okay.

I will pray for your family!

Your little one and you are in my prayers. Hope all turns out well.

I want to thank each of you for your kind words and prayers. They truly do mean a lot to me!!! You guys are the best, thank you!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Im not crabby, just a little bummed today.

We got to watch 5 kids this weekend (16, 15, 6, 4, 2) and we had a ball. They were all really good and it was just fun. On Saturday am, I wasnt too happy because my cousin left his alarm clock on for 6am, and it woke the 2 year old up!!! so I was up with her, she wouldnt go back to sleep, but she just wanted to sit and cuddle - it was very cute -we watched the rain and wind outside....then on Sunday am, my DH was going to get his shower and the 4 year old peeked out of his room, so Billy scooped him up and he snuggled in bed with me and a little bit later the 6 year old joined us - it was really fun just chatting with them about nothing.....I had sewn new outfits for them to wear to Sunday School and they looked so cute!! Of course I couldnt find the camera though!!!! But anyway I MISS THEM!!!!

Its a lot of work playing "mommy" - I totally give all of you moms a super huge gold star!!!! You are all so GREAT!!!!!!!!!:wizard:

Aww, that sounds like a nice weekend!

I'm sorry I can not go into detail right now but please, please if you are a praying person, please please pray for my baby boy!!! Thank you!!!

I'm praying for you and your family Beth!

Well, praying, and screaming a little too!

The box method is lattice multiplication. This is how they are teaching kids to do multiplication. I tutor kids that do it this way and I have mixed feelings about it. This method keeps it organized, but it takes double the time to do.

For Corey it seems to be a lot quicker, he was done before I could have even wrote the problem down! But, Arminda said she didn't like it that way, so I guess it is all about the kid and how they think things through. I think it's great that they have a choice. Here I always thought there was only one way to do it, and then I learn of this whole other method!

Teach them all the rules, expect them to learn and remember them and there you go!

I think they need to teach them their multiplication tables, but the way I actually do math has alwasy been the way they are teaching Riley. That's how my mind works, and once I figured out I could do things like that, math wasn't nearly so hard. So, I think they should be teaching both methods. I guess what I really want is a private tutor for each and every child to figure out how they learn best! :thumbsup2

Which, always brings me back to homeschool.

I am so sad I missed this! :sad1: I know someone who is going through some tough financial times and is trying to make Christmas gifts for her DD2. She doesn't have a sewing machine so I gave her the ide of the tulle tutus. She is trying to buy a roll or two of tulle at a time as she can afford it to make Christmas dress-ups for her DD. That'll teach me to let DH have a turn on his computer. :rotfl:

I'm sorry I can not go into detail right now but please, please if you are a praying person, please please pray for my baby boy!!! Thank you!!!

I hope all is ok. Our prayers are being said and we hope will turn out ok. Take good care of yourself and when you are ready, let us know what is going on.

Can I join the (crabby crew)? Seriously I need some kind of support.
   Belated Birthday Wishes! I'm so sorry. My DH always ignores my birthday too. My birthday is May 6th so he thinks he can ignore it and just do something for Mother's Day but before I was a mother he'd still ignore it. One year he got mad that I was mad he ignored it that he took off leaving me home alone. Now I go to WDW on my birthday so I know I'll be in my happy place. I'm so sorry things are so rough for you right now.

Did I hear something about a cranky club??? I'm in!
:wizard: Hope you feel better soon!

But anyway I MISS THEM!!!!

HI guys! Just wanted to check in. I have been so sick and tired and busy that the minute I get to sit down I'm usually passed out in a chair or just going to bed. I am feeling really crappy. SO I wanted to let you all know that I have not forgotten about you and I am ok. Hopefully I'll have a chance to catch up a little later in the week.

I did want to let you all know that I am now an official Mini Van owner. I am so old...
Awww....mini vans aren't so bad!! I'm glad you're sick and tired!

a) yep, that's what I'm sayin'--Teresa, you sure you don't want to come to the dismeet? :rolleyes1
b):snooty: y'all have been exchanging crabby emails without me? You know I'm soooooooooooooooo good at crabby emails! :snooty:
a) :snooty:
b) Maybe if you answered e-mails every once in a while....;)

1)WHAT??? Why?? I love his hair!
2)David had an Oscar the Grouch, and I had a Cookie Monster puppet! I think Heather has the Oscar now, but I dont' know where my Cookie Monster went! I wonder if it was the kind you had? There was some sort of little loopy thing inside of it that you were suppose to pull, but I never could quite figure out what it was suppose to do.
3)I thought my Walmart had $1 fabric when I was there a few days ago. Then again, I don't know that I payed that much attention! They keep telling me they dont' have room for more fabric, but I keep telling them how I think they could arrange it to fit way more in there. They just LOVE me at my Walmart!
4)Heather is a measuring savant.
I can simply explain something to her, and she will tell me how big it is! And, when I measure it, she is always right! I think she should go on Letterman!
1) Just by people with kids that have ugly hairdos! :thumbsup2
2)I still have Oscar the Grouch! He's looking a little worse for wear, but I have him!
3)On Sunday they had a sign on one side of the rack that said $1.50 and the other side was $2. I complained rather loudly!
4):cool2: You WISH you could measure in your head like me.

!!!NEW BIG GIVE!!![/SIZE]

This is a WONDERFUL family!!! They have only one daughter, Becca, who is 12. Mandy, the Mom is really sweet and very funny! I'm hoping we can give them a fantastic give!

Here is the link to the Give:

Thanks guys!!!!
So, are you saying you really like this family??

I know I should be dis owned for not wanting an embroidery machine but to be honest I dont think I am ready for one. I am afraid to attempt it. The dora overalls were an attempt at a aplique but I chickened out and made it so it has frayed edges.
Nah, we'll forgive you! ;) I didn't even know what an embroidery machine really did until I got one! They're AMAZING!!

The Dora overalls were adorable!

GREAT job!! These are all so cute! You guys have me wishing that Tessa played with dolls. S

Oh no!! Are you sure she just wasn't mistaken? Will she pay for her own ticket now that you said you aren't going to pay for it? Can you come by yourself?? I want to meet you!!!

The big dots look great, too! I couldn't remember if I'd seen something made with the big dots or not.

i think i am the cranky queen today, i just spent 2 hours doing kindergarten homework with ryan, and lets just say that my sweet patient preschool teacher personality was not shining thru as he was making sloppy letters, all the while mia is screaming and yelling because i blocked the refrigerator with a chair because she keeps opening it, so she moves the chair opens the eggs takes one out and throws it on the floor,i am getting a cold, and if that s not enough i read that other walmarts sell 2 dollar fabric, almost every bolt in my walmart is $4.44. as my dear friend alexander says this is a terrible, horrible no good very bad day.
ok rant over i promise thanks for listening

its not so bad , especially with power opening doors
 I'm sorry about your bad day!

Here is what I made for the Ambergreenawalt Big Give. Jessica is making a coordinating outfit for Sebastian.

Those are all SO cute!! I love Lily's ballet pose! The hat is really cool!

Ya Know, I go by Minnie Van Mom, but in fact we sold our this year to help get out of debt but Ford POS Mom just doesn't sound right.
:rotfl2:

The big hair picture is downstairs and Dallas decided he was done playing legos and ready to come up and I had to come with him, so it will have to wait until morning.
It's MORNING!!!

Can I join the (crabby crew)?
 You most certainly can! I'm sorry to hear about your bad birthday.

Did I hear something about a cranky club??? I'm in!
Welcome to the cranky club! I hope you all start feeling better soon. My kids sound like they're hacking up a lung today.

I was really shy in school (believe it or not) and I NEVER asked for help in school. I was afraid of looking stupid. This is why I didn't do so well in Algebra. I just didn't get it and I wouldn't ask for help!

We got to watch 5 kids this weekend (16, 15, 6, 4, 2) and we had a ball. They were all really good and it was just fun.
