travel to foreign countrys

International travel bans will be lifted before the travel insurance companies will remove the Covid 19 Exclusions.

The Covid 19 Exclusion from my travel insurance states
We will not cover any claims caused by or relating to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) or any mutation or variation of these. Nor will We cover any claims relating to any fear or threat concerning these viruses. This general exclusion applies to all sections of cover. In the event of a conflict between this general exclusion and any other term in Your policy terms and conditions, this general exclusion takes precedence.

This is for any new bookings after March 13 2020 and for any new policy bought after March 2020.

This is a huge deal. Europeans and Canadians will be very reluctant to travel to USA in 2021 if travel insurance companies still have Covid 19 Exclusions.

My travel insurance company will cover Covid 19 medical claims and cancellations for my June 2020 California trip because my flights and hotels were booked before March 13.

If I reschedule my flights and hotels for November 2020 or April 2021, my travel insurance sees this as a new booking so the Covid 19 exclusion applies.

So as a result you will see huge numbers of Canadians and Europeans not rescheduling cancelled Disney Parks holidays for 2021. No one wants to risk travelling to USA without medical insurance.

Even travel within Canada should give one pause. It's not widely understood among Canadians but each of our Provincial Health Plans are independent from one another. If you need care in Alberta, you will receive it but it will be billed at whatever rate is customary in Alberta, not Ontario. If OHIP does not reimburse the full rate, you would be on the hook for the rest of the bill if you did not also buy supplemental travel medical coverage. The government of BC, which has many high-volume tourist destinations, has announced taking it even one step further. They are going to be billing out-of-province patients directly and then the patients will have to recover the costs themselves from either their province or their travel medical insurance. These are measures we're not used to having to contend with and they're no joke. :(
Yeah. Definitely something to consider. I am somewhat aware because I had to look into supplemental health care when my kids traveled to Quebec. I go to the States multiple times a year, but I haven’t travelled out of Province in Canada In over 20 years.

Very smart that you did so. The vast number of Canadians don't know and don't take any precautions. Then again many Canadians think our health care is "free", but I digress...;)

You’re not wrong. Our next trip is scheduled for December 2021, and fortunately we don’t have to pay the balances for the flights, car and villa until August 2021; up until then we can cancel and only lose the various deposits (which are quite modest and which we actually put down just before Christmas 2019 so before all this kicked off). At least we’ll know where we all stand by then, I think, and be able to make that ‘go/no go’ decision with some sort of confidence...

I’m also Aussie and the only country I would be willing to visit in the near future is NZ. Anywhere else either has too high number of cases, a health care system not equipped to handle a high number of cases and/or requires too many flight connections to get there so I’d be worried about all the transfers. Most of Europe has very high number of cases per capita so they’ve got a long while to go before anything is under control. NZ has taken an even stronger approach than Australia plus their public healthcare covers Australians so I wouldn’t be bankrupted by travel insurance not covering the virus if I did get sick. Other than that I can see a lot of countries taking a long time to open their borders up.

It's just been announced that Jacinda Ardern is going to join in on the Australian National Cabinet meeting tomorrow, so it looks like the Trans-Tasman bubble is likely going ahead. (For non-Aussies the National Cabinet was established for this crisis and compromises of the Prime Minister plus the Premiers of each state and Chief Ministers of each territory). My aunt owns a travel agency that specialises in ski tours, so it would be wonderful for her business if they could book clients for the New Zealand ski season.

I'm hoping Australia keeps our borders closed for quite a few months more at this stage. We have done a fantastic job of keeping the virus infection rates low which is mainly due to closing our borders as quickly as we did. The vast majority of our infections were from overseas travellers - at this stage the only people allowed into the country are residents / essential travellers and every single one of those have to go into mandatory 2 week detention, normally at a selected hotel which is enforced by police / army.

It is really to risky for travel to be opened up - look at the UK who are still struggling with infection due to no mandatory quarantining laws being in place.
As a fellow Aussie, I wholeheartedly agree! Having gone on an entirely different trajectory to most other countries, we simply can't allow travel until a vaccine is available or the virus is eliminated. I do have hope that travel to New Zealand and any other countries that successfully eradicate the virus will be possible, but sadly I think any other overseas travel is a long, long way away.

Over here in NZ all the talk is of a NZ/ Australian bubble. Possibly with Cook Islands too.
Fingers crossed!

I said to my husband whilst we were watching the news “Oh well it’s looking like a NZ holiday this year” 🥰

This is why you won't see huge numbers of Americans....or huge numbers of anyone else around the globe, traveling anywhere, anytime soon. In order to travel, first of all, you need to be willing to get into a tube-shaped flying petrie dish. Then, wherever you're headed, for the next year and beyond, you risk needing to quarantine in place, or getting stuck someplace because an outbreak flares up and the country closes its borders. And, you need to think about the healthcare system wherever you're headed, and whether or not they can care for you or your loved ones if they get COVID-19. And then, you need to understand that unless your existing healthcare plan covers you out of country, you'll need to pay for that care out of pocket. And so....don't expect travel to look anything like it looked in good ole' 2019, for a long time.

It's no wonder that Warren Buffett revealed on Saturday that his firm sold all of the airline stocks that they held. And it was no small amount....Berkshire held a 10% stake in each of the major four airlines. When asked why they did that, his answer was "the world has changed". Oh, and he also added to their cash stockpile, the largest they've every held, 137 Billion. He hasn't bought anything.

I'm think I'm going to look at this as an opportunity. All my kids major vacations have involved the US and a Disney Park. We are now going to take the opportunity to see something of our own country. Cairns and FNQ are looking good. Maybe drive down the Queensland coast and visit the Queensland Theme Parks. I'm actually getting quite excited about it.

yep - you might be able to "technically" visit another state, but if that state has quarantine orders in place you really have to consider whether being holed up in your hotel for 14 days before you can actually do anything is worth traveling for. I'm not super sure how well any state is enforcing these rules, but I wouldn't want to take the chance and end up using all my vacation time on the inside of a hotel room.

My understanding is that most states aren't. Ohio, for example, is telling out of staters to self-quarantine for 14 days upon entering the state... but there are places in Michigan where the closest Walmart is in Ohio. I guarantee people who live in those areas aren't self-quarantining every time they go to the grocery store, and I doubt many are making longer drives or doing their shopping at the local mini-mart to avoid crossing the invisible line. We may see some enforcement spring up in tourist-oriented or purely non-essential businesses/facilities, like campgrounds or parks, particularly those near state lines, but it is unlikely to be widespread or comprehensive.

Smart plan. I think traveling internationally for many of us is off the table for some time. It smarts for DH and me right now as we should be in Cape Town for our first trip to South Africa. We were unable to get a refund for this 16 day trip, but moved it out as far as they'd allow....August of 2021. I'm not all that hopeful to be able to take that trip, even that far out. I'm not sure how many of the vendors/hotels will still even be in business. For us, at least until next spring, I don't see us traveling anywhere. Maybe an AirBnb next spring, depending on how bad things get around the country.

I’m in the US, and hands-down my favorite vacation ever was to Port Douglas/Cairns area! Sydney was great, but the north was just spectacular and one amazing thing after another.

I’m so jealous you get to go there. I truly can’t wait to go back and bring my kids (DH and I went on an anniversary trip pre-kids)

I am supposed to be visiting Disney in September and a cruise in October but don't think either will go ahead. Will use some of the money (as soon as kitchen units are out of the sitting room) to get a second hand upright piano and learn to play
