do you think we will be able to go out of our countrys any time soon? we will be able to go to another country with this going on or do u think they wont open the travel ban? what do think.

I'm hoping Australia keeps our borders closed for quite a few months more at this stage. We have done a fantastic job of keeping the virus infection rates low which is mainly due to closing our borders as quickly as we did. The vast majority of our infections were from overseas travellers - at this stage the only people allowed into the country are residents / essential travellers and every single one of those have to go into mandatory 2 week detention, normally at a selected hotel which is enforced by police / army.

It is really to risky for travel to be opened up - look at the UK who are still struggling with infection due to no mandatory quarantining laws being in place.

As a fellow Aussie, I wholeheartedly agree! Having gone on an entirely different trajectory to most other countries, we simply can't allow travel until a vaccine is available or the virus is eliminated. I do have hope that travel to New Zealand and any other countries that successfully eradicate the virus will be possible, but sadly I think any other overseas travel is a long, long way away.

I sense (nothing more than that) that the U.K. may open its borders during the next two to three weeks, with a mandatory 14 day quarantine period for anyone entering, whether a U.K. citizen or a visitor.

Welsh-Dragon for your island’s sake I hope it get introduced and works. Some travellers whinged and moaned about being forced to do it here but the amount of them that then became ill was proof it was necessary.

I’m also Aussie and the only country I would be willing to visit in the near future is NZ. Anywhere else either has too high number of cases, a health care system not equipped to handle a high number of cases and/or requires too many flight connections to get there so I’d be worried about all the transfers. Most of Europe has very high number of cases per capita so they’ve got a long while to go before anything is under control. NZ has taken an even stronger approach than Australia plus their public healthcare covers Australians so I wouldn’t be bankrupted by travel insurance not covering the virus if I did get sick. Other than that I can see a lot of countries taking a long time to open their borders up.

We'd like to visit Mexico in December but now we are unsure if we'll be able to get there due to travel restrictions. :(

Im not sure island nations are going to be inviting visitors for awhile. I would expect shared borders to open first

Yesterday there was some news that Italy wasn't allowing foreign visitors until 2021. Not sure if I read it or saw it on TV. I went looking for it and couldn't find it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

We are Canadian, I am looking forward to a time when the border is open again with our US neighbors to travel and visit friends, but, if the border opens and there is a 14 day quarantine required to enter the US or to return to Canada we will not be going. No idea what will happen at this point. We have plans to travel in July, August and November but its all up in the air right now.

We had a wonderful trip to Canada in February not long before the border closed and we can't wait to visit again. :) We were hoping this Summer, but that isn't looking good. :(

Even if the borders were open, what if a second round came through and you were stuck in a foreign country? If the State Department has to fly you out, I believe you are on the hook for the costs not to mention being quarantined when you return to the US. It could be a nightmare...be patient as this too will pass.

Yes, good job Australia. Very impressive.

Nobody knows.

Exactly.

Just as a side note to this, we are heavily involved in our local Rotary Youth Exchange program. The past month has been really, really interesting as far as sending exchange students home early and getting our US citizens back to the US. Students who were frightened by what was going on and departed for home right away (early April) made it home safely on commercial flights. Students who did not want their year-long exchange to end early, who believed high schools would re-open and they would still have prom, graduation, etc. are now stuck here in the US. For some, only embassy flights are available from certain US cities and they get cancelled constantly. We cannot have a minor stuck in a layover city, though local Rotarians would surely house and feed them until the next embassy flight was available. Many would still need to quarantine in a hotel in the gateway city of their home country before being allowed to continue on to their hometown and their parents. This is by forceable order, it does not matter that they are unaccompanied minors.

On the opposite end, our US student who was in France could not transit the two hours to the airport in Paris for weeks because it was illegal for anyone to be on the road. This is just one example, but we exchange with 16 different countries and there are 16 different situations going on with varying restrictions. The situation has been fluid and extremely interesting. I know there is a huge difference between getting citizens home vs. wanting to visit another country as a tourist, but this whole thing is far from over when it comes to worldwide travel.

We thought about Toronto or Costa Rica in July and decided it just wasn't worth the hassle of trying to see if things would work out (This decision was also made at the end of March and I don't see July looking any better for international travel now than it did than). At this point, I'd rather just plan a short trip somewhere if were able to go and bank my vacation time. I think I'll be at or very close to use or lose status for 2021 so that will be nice.

DH and I aren't planning any out of the country travel for the time being. DD#2 is getting married in October and she had booked a cruise for their honeymoon, but is now exploring options within the US. Lots to see/do here if things open up. My concern would be getting stranded in a foreign country and having a difficult time getting back home.
