Self-service in Cabanas

This thread is fascinating to me, since I can't decide which I prefer.

Originally, I was in the I hope self-service never comes back camp, since I am easily grossed out and I have seen both grownups and kids lick sauce or food off their fingers while going through the buffet and then use the serving utensils I am supposed to use next. I have also seen kids touch food and put it back. The former can be addressed somewhat by using a little sanitizer once I am seated, but the the latter can't be helped.

On the other hand, the comments about getting food just the way you want it, really appeals to me. One of the best parts of vacation is indulging on the food front, and I do like to customize stuff at Cabanas. I also like controlling how much I take.

P.S. The best waffle combination I have found is waffles, topped with peanut butter, then syrup. Out of this world.

Forgive me if this has been posted, but yesterday, Carnival's Brand Ambassador said its buffets are going to be self-serve (with crew members checking carefully for washed hands and that people don't touch food and leave it):

Thanks for posting that. Fingers crossed that their model works out, so the rest of the industry can follow their lead.

And your peanut butter on your waffle thing intrigues me. I need to try that when I sail again. 👍

I have a real weakness for buffets. It takes me back to my childhood when my Aunt Irene and Uncle Jack would take me to cafeterias and buffets. I always enjoyed getting to select whatever I wanted and carrying my little tray. It was so different from going out with my family, where we would have to share a Coke, split a meal, or order from the kids' menu even after I was older than the printed age (they would make me lie). I always felt so indulged when we'd go to a cafeteria.

Even though I love buffets, though, I will admit I'm not too stressed about the change. The idea of not touching all those spoons after all those kids who may have just wiped their noses is actually a comfort. I don't think it does anything for Covid, but for those Noroviruses and the flu, you better believe it helps.

This is so interesting for me to read - and how different people are! For example, I HATE calling to order food. I am so happy I can order online most of the time now.

But when I'm standing at the cafe/buffet line, I have no trouble asking for whatever I want. The building where I've worked for the last 15 years has a cafeteria, and although I'm not in there every day, I do go at least once a week or so (until COVID). Thus, it is no big deal for me to ask the servers for what I want, how I want it. Or the other day, I went to Coldstone...and my mom 'pre-ordered' with me - and it wasn't something they normally do...but since they weren't busy, I didn't mind asking and the lady said "no problem." But tell me I have to ask that on the phone...no way!

This is so funny, I am the exact opposite! I hate ordering online, or I should say I hate when my husband says he's going to order online. I would much rather pick up the phone and do it in 2 seconds and be done with it, I have no issue with that. But! don't put me at a buffet where I have to ask for what I want, I cringe! So weird.
