INTRODUCTION

The essence of Hollywood in the 1930s and '40s is recreated in many ways throughout the Disney's Hollywood Studios. One of the more entertaining and interactive ways is through the use of street performers who enhance the atmosphere, hence the name "Streetmosphere."

ATTRACTION

Streetmosphere performers, known as "Citizens of Hollywood" in this park, can be found primarily along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards at various points throughout the day. You may encounter starlets, gossip columnists, reporters, policemen, cabbies, and many others whose hilarious interactions with each other and with guests will have you laughing out loud. For example, I once encountered a group of seven Streetmosphere actors who enlisted the aid of the gathering crowd as they conducted the entertaining 1946 Spelling Bee, rigged, of course, so that a member of the audience (a young boy from New York) came out the winner.

The actors are constantly changing, but some characters of the past and present are (and we apologize if we get someone's name wrong -- please let us know if we do!):

Plus these characters (some of the past), who we have no photos for (feel free to send yours in!):

Dorma Nesmond

Officers Duncan Donut and Les Manly

Ima Fraudian, acting coach to the stars

Cecily DeMille

Greta Garbage (pronounced Gar-bahj), laundress to the stars

Carlotta Diamond

Roman Holiday, an actor

Bunny Hop, a starlet

Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage! brings the stars of the Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney television shows, geared to preschoolers, together to entertain Walt Disney World guests with music, songs and stories of friendship. This attraction is housed in Soundstage 5 in the Animation Courtyard.

ATTRACTION

PLAYHOUSE DISNEY LIVE! is one of the live entertainment attractions introduced at Walt Disney World during the 100 Years of Magic celebration. Stars of the Disney Channel's popular "Playhouse Disney" programming block, geared to preschool audiences, take the stage in this fun-filled show, with sing-alongs and dance activities.

Since the rehab in early 2008, performers featured come from the following shows: Handy Manny; My Friends Tigger and Pooh; Mickey Mouse Clubhouse; and Little Einsteins.

The 22-minute stage show features visits to characters of each of the shows, hosted by a live cast member, Casey. The scene starts in Mickey's colorful clubhouse, and continues with the characters trying to make the best birthday party ever for Minnie Mouse. In addition to the fun special effects, youngsters in the audience join the gang in singing along with catchy tunes and dancing.

INTRODUCTION

Using a unique combination of special effects, film clips, live performances and innovative puppetry, Disney's Hollywood Studios successfully translates the popular and acclaimed animated feature The Little Mermaid to the stage. Tucked away in the Animation Courtyard, this 17-minute show is guaranteed to satisfy mermaid-lovers, young and old.

ATTRACTION

Voyage of the Little Mermaid -- The nautical theme begins as you pass through a waiting room filled with undersea paraphernalia -- an old diver's suit, fishing nets, even a fake shark! As you enter the theater, your senses are tricked into believing that you've been transported to a beautiful underwater world. A curtain of water showers from the stage and you're lightly sprayed with a sea mist and gentle breeze in the murky darkness. The crusty crustacean Sebastian, along with 100 ocean friend puppets illuminated by black light, start the show with the Academy Award-winning, "Under the Sea." You soon meet Ariel, her human love Eric, and the evil sea witch, Ursula. To move the action along, scenes from the movie are interspersed between the live performances. As in the original Little Mermaid, Ariel is eventually transformed into a human and sheds her glittery green flippers, only to find she has lost her gorgeous voice. The story concludes with the thwarting of Ursula's wicked plan in a musical finale that's sure to please.

INTERESTING FACTS

The figure of Ursula, the Sea Witch, is actually a puppet that is 12 feet tall and 10 feet wide.

During the song "Under the Sea", over 100 back-light puppets perform.

Voyage of the Little Mermaid features the original music from the film, created by Oscar- and Grammy Award-winning composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

This show has been entertaining guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios since January 7, 1992.

INTRODUCTION

Almost at the end of Hollywood Boulevard, off to the right, is the entrance to the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, home to the night-time spectacle known as Fantasmic! It's Mickey Mouse's dream-made-real, using lights and lasers, fireworks, and water animation set to a delightful score of famous Disney movie music.

ATTRACTION

Pre-Show - Because of this show's enormous popularity, it's best to claim a seat early - during busy times, as much as an hour or more before showtime! Music is piped in to help you while away the wait.

FANTASMIC! begins its 25-minute extravaganza with a dreaming Mickey Mouse on a darkened island. Mickey acts as a conductor as music fills the air and the waters surrounding the island begin to dance. Suddenly, screens of water emerge and a multitude of images are displayed upon them: Sorcerer Mickey in his famous "Sorcerer's Apprentice" scene from Fantasia, Simba and Nala romping from the Lion King, and the undersea creatures from The Little Mermaid.

The mood shifts when a frantic Jiminy Cricket becomes trapped in a large bubble, then is pursued by Monstro the whale. Monstro lifts himself out of the water and lands with a crash, which splashes unsuspecting front row Fantasmic! guests with real water!

The waters calm, but a cannon blast erupts. Live characters re-enact battle scenes from the movie Pocahontas, followed by John Smith and the Native American heroine dancing to Colors of the Wind.

Mickey's dream continues on its nightmarish journey as eerie music begins and the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs concocts a spell amidst pyrotechnics and other special effects. She invokes some of the most infamous Disney Villains: Ursula, Cruella de Vil, Scar, Frollo, Jafar, Maleficent and Hades each make an appearance, cackling menacingly. But these bad guys are no match for Mickey - not even Jafar, who turns into a writhing black cobra.

Maleficent unexpectedly transforms into a 40-foot-tall fire-breathing dragon who sets the waters ablaze - guests as far as half-way back in the theater can feel the heat! Mickey manages to create a wall of water around the island, smothering the flames and defeating the dragon.

Finally, a celebratory atmosphere prevails amid a flurry of fireworks. Beloved Disney characters glide past the audience aboard the Steamboat Willie River Boat, as Fantasmic! concludes with a triumphant Mickey rejoicing at his victory over evil.

INTERESTING FACTS

Fantasmic! premiered at Disneyland in California in 1992. It debuted at the Disney's Hollywood Studios in October 1998.

The Disney's Hollywood Studios version of Fantasmic! features some unique elements, incorporating scenes from recent animated releases such as "The Lion King," "Pocahontas," "Hercules" and "Mulan."

The Fantasmic! island features a 59-foot man-made mountain, making it the fourth highest "mountain" at the Walt Disney World Resort.

The moat surrounding the Fantasmic! island holds 1.9-million-gallons.

The water screens in Fantasmic! pump 2,400 gallons of water into the air every minute and, if called upon, could fill the 500,000-gallon Earffel Tower in less than three hours.

Fantasmic! features 50 performers. In the grand finale, at least 26 Disney characters cruise across the moat aboard an 80-foot replica of the Steamboat Willie boat.

In the scene where the villainous Jafar turns into a cobra, he is 100 feet long and 16 feet high. The mechanical Maleficent dragon in the climactic good vs. evil scene weighs an astonishing 32,000 lbs.

In addition to seating 6,500 guests, specially designed Hollywood Hills Amphitheater also can accommodate 2,500 standing guests.

BEAR IN THE BIG BLUE HOUSE -- LIVE ON STAGE! has all of the characters from the popular Disney Channel show in a musical, fun-filled live performance, which is housed in SoundStage 5 in the Animation Courtyard (formerly home to the Soundstage Restaurant).

ATTRACTION
Bear in the Big Blue House -- As you enter the Soundstage, you're directed to find a space on the carpeted floor. The colorful Big Blue House set juts right into the audience. Television monitors flanking the stage show snippets of The Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney shows until showtime. Like its television counterpart, the Bear in the Big Blue House show begins with Bear's opening Welcome song, and the 7-foot-tall bruin giving the audience a good sniff. Bear calls his little mouse friend Tutter, and subsequently introduces Ojo the small bear, Treelo the lemur, Pip and Pop (otters), and Shadow, in a 15-minute performance that gets the audience singing and clapping along. The show concludes with Bear and his friend Luna, the moon, singing the gentle lullabyish Good-bye song.

INTRODUCTION
Fifteenth century France is brought to life before your eyes on the Backlot Theater stage, with colorful sets and brightly costumed performers in a magical musical staging of The Hunchback of Notre Dame -- A Musical Adventure. You'll find Quasimodo, Esmeralda, Phoebus and their friends by walking to the end of New York Street, then making a left.

ATTRACTION

Pre-Show - There are several different performers who "warm-up" the audience beginning about 20 minutes prior to show-time. Matt the Juggler is my personal favorite, as he demonstrates wit and a real talent for juggling -- even though by now I know almost all of his jokes!

The Hunchback of Notre Dame - A Musical Adventure - Following the script of the original animated feature pretty closely, the show traces the life of the orphaned Quasimodo. Despite the efforts of the cold, self-righteous Judge Frollo, the deformed bell-ringer eventually finds freedom through his relationship with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and the captain of the guard, Phoebus. The story is told through the use of uplifting musical numbers pulled straight from the film, vibrant costumes, innovative and expressive puppets, and a healthy helping of special effects.

INTRODUCTION

A live, interactive variation of the popular ABC-TV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? officially opened in the Disney's Hollywood Studios on April 7, 2001. The Disney's Hollywood Studios version is Who Wants to be a Millionaire -- Play It! It gives guests the chance to sit in the Hot Seat, answer questions and win prizes based on the number of points they earn and is held in soundstages along Mickey Avenue.

ATTRACTION

Who Wants to be a Millionaire -- Play It! -- A replica of the television show's high-tech set, complete with its dramatic lighting, music and "Hot Seat," has been constructed in conjunction with Walt Disney Entertainment in Soundstages 2 and 3 along Mickey Avenue.

The 30-minute show operates much like the TV version -- there's even an emcee trained to perform like the original television show's famous host, Regis Philbin. Unlike the TV show, however, all 600 members of the audience have the chance to play along and earn points based on how quickly and accurately they answer the questions using the keypads at their seats.

The two "lifelines" known as 50/50 and Ask the Audience, which allow a contestant to receive help in answering a question, function as on the TV show, but instead of the Phone-A-Friend option, the Disney show has "Phone a Complete Stranger." The contestant has the chance to make a call, which rings at random at a phone near the entrance to the Millionaire Soundstage on Mickey Avenue.
