It was common even back in the dinosaur ages. I went to High School in Bergen County, so still a bit of a drive to the shore. But that did not deter us. We went directly from the Manor to the shore as did most of my classmates. And this was back in 1976.

I certainly hope today's teens are much smarter than we were back then. I am 50 now and still will not divulge to my mother what went on in that house and the surrounding ones that weekend :scared1:

We were a good group of clean cut kids who were respectful to the property we rented and didn't normally ever get in trouble, but the drugs, alcohol and sex on the beach were, well, typical of the 70's.
[/B]
I graduated from high school in Bergen Counyty(1989) and our prom was at the Manor too(dinner was served at the prom, by the way), limos to and from the prom, after the prom the limo took us into the city and then after a few hours, we went home.
Slept for a couple of hours and then everyone drove down the shore=we always went to Seaside-a couple of years after I graduated they started going down to Wildwood.
The vast majority of my senior class went down the shore.(and I was only 17 years old)
The prom in my town was always on a Thursday and the school scheduled no exams for seniors Friday am or pm, nor on Monday morning, so we had Friday-Monday down the shore...and there was drinking-lots and lots and lots of drinking. :rolleyes1
I'm sure they don't do that anymore.;)

Hi everyone....I'm posting an update. The prom is still about two weeks away.

I just want to start off with this....I am having so much fun going through this with my DD. We have spent more time together then we have in years. I also noticed that when we disagree....we fight less....and talk more about it.

So here is what we have accomplished:

Dress is at the seamstress and ready to be picked up next week.
Shoes are at the shoe store being dyed ready to be picked up next week.
We got the jewlery....necklace and earings.
She went to the hair salon and picked out the style she wants and we bought the hair clips.
The limo is paid in full.
Her make up is purchased...yet we can't find it!
Appointments for nails, waxing, hair, makeup have been made.
After prom outfit is purchased with shoes.
After prom tickets bought.

So we are really winding down and other then picking things up and finding that makeup....we think my DH moved it although he won't admit it!....we just have to go to the florist for DD's BF.

I still can't believe she is graduating. I remember her first day of Pre-K.

Thanks for the update! I'm glad you and your daughter are having so much fun!! Can't wait to see the pics!!

where is that darn pot stirrin smiley???

but she's right, OP, take all the stuff back send your daughter in rags and tell her she'll appreciate life so much more because you didn't just buy her stuff. eta: insert rolling eyes smiley here-so no one thinks I agree with the PP

maybe OP is doing this for her daughter because she WANTS to and CAN. she isn't spending your money, so chill

Exactly!
OP, I'm glad you're having fun with the preperations. :goodvibes
My daughter's is next week and I know regardless of what happens that night all the money we've spent will be worth it. I have no problem spending the money because I know it's a once in lifetime experience .

I did not go to my prom but that was my choice. If a person wan ts to go, it's their business how much they want to spend.

My DD prom was last weekend. The prices add up quickly but they all had a great time! Here's how hers ended up .....

Dress - $125
Shoes - $50
Jewelry - $25
Hair - $60
Makeup - $50
Limo - $55 each person (limo was split between the 15 kids in the pic below)
Prom Ticket - $65
After Prom party - $20 (from midnight to 5 a.m. - snacks, Starbucks, paintball, bumper cars, bowling, mech. bull rides, casino play and other games, plus great prizes like laptops, Ipods, gift cards, TV's, etc. --- and the BEST part --- my DD won a laptop! WOOHOO!!)
Flowers - $40
Pictures - $0 (we took our own)

And the end result ........

Just dropping in to say that it's fun to see the pics and read the stories about prom and your kids. Mine's only going into 8th grade so we have something to look forward to.

You're a great mom. I hope your DD's prom night is really enjoyable!! Be sure to post pictures-- after all her primping and money spending, we want to see how gorgeous she looks!!

I went to my DFiance's Senior Prom and then we went to mine. His prom was pretty cheap.
Tickets: $50 a piece (he paid..)
Dinner: some horrible chinese place that we went with his friends (he paid..)
Corsage: he paid again..
Breakfast the next morning: at someone's house
Limo: I think we both paid $70??
My Dress: I got on sale for like $60-- it was gorgeous!

Hmm.. maybe I thought his prom was cheap because HE paid!!

My prom on the other hand...
Tickets: $85 a piece (we got in for free- my mom was a teacher)
Dinner: included
My dress: $20 on sale!! I'm a good bargin hunter
Limo: free- my friend's dad owned a limo place
Corsage: $30-- would've been $40 but the florist messed up? Apparently she used wrong color creme? That's what she told DFiance.
After prom: WE WENT TO DISNEY WORLD. That was all I wanted to do- I didn't care about the hotel room or drunken after parties. So, we got in the car the next morning- like 3am after going home, taking a powernap, etc. and we drove our butts to MK and then came back that night!

It was so much fun.

now thats an afterprom!:cool1:

my hs has always done prom different than any in our area. The jr class puts on the prom for the sr class...and only jr's and sr's can attend (even if you are from another school) the prom is at the high school...they decorate most of the halls within a theme...i think one year was hollywood movies, etc...we did wizard of oz before...i know my jr year it was romance in different countries and one of my talented friends made a wooden eiffel tower that was put in our courtyard...the sophmore class are prom servers...pretty much the people in the decorations. Seniors get out for the 2nd half of school the day of prom (it was on a friday when i was in h.s...but now i do think it is on a saturday...since it is now ten yrs later :sad1:) and juniors had the whole school day to complete decorations and put it all together...it took after school on thurs and all day friday...there was a company who came in to decorate the gym.
The whole town comes out to see the decorations and then watch people get announced as the prom goers arrive. We too always have some different type of transportation to stand out. I think both years I arrived in a classic car borrowed from friends. Our parents had our cars parked in the back of the high school so we could leave later.

Most girls order their dresses from the bridal shops because we are in a small area...so if you shop at a department store etc, most likely someone else will have it. If you go to the bridal shop...they will not order another of the same dress. I know my senior prom dress was over $200 but it was gorgeous! I still have both of them and hope someday to have a daughter to be able to play dress up in them.

I love that our prom is like this...its a tradition in my small town and everyone looks forward to it every year!

Only read the first page. Good grief for oldest DD's wedding I spent a lot less than most and that was for both DDs together when it comes to hair and make up. Dresses. shoes. undergarments, jewelry, around a little over a grand. IMO there is no need to spend that much on prom. Just not necessary. A wedding yes not prom.:confused3

What a cool idea!

My daughter went to her boyfriend's Fraternity Formal in CT a few weeks ago. Her dress was so pretty...simple elegance is the only way I can describe it. I did have to laugh when she said the best thing she bought was the pair of Spanks. She said the Spanks made a pretty dress Gorgeous!!

I wish I was savy enough to post a picture. One of the pictures is my screen saver at work.

OP I can't wait to see your daughter's picture.

I so look forward to the prom threads every year, it brings back such fond memories of when our kids were living at home and all the excitement of prom time. Altho I’m a Nana many times over now, with 3 DD’s and a son, I have probably been thru 10-12 proms and too many college formals to count. :flower3:

I was blessed to go to my own prom 45 yrs ago in 1964 w/my now DH, I so enjoyed and loved all the fan fare associated with pre prom activities. Once again I was lucky to recaptured the rapture with our own teens....the tri state gown shopping for that special dress with our DD’s, the shoes, hair, jewelry, flowers, limo, portraits, and the whole works…..including their Dad tagging along! I think the most expensive gown purchased was $200., which back in the 80’ies on our very tight budget was big $$$, but DH and I did what we had to to make it work for our lovely DD’s and DS. We never regretted it and would do it again in a heartbeat! Our children are our most precious jewels, enjoy every moment you can, they grow up in the blink of an eye!! :lovestruc

Thank you for sharing your photos of all your lovely children! You are all very blessed, each and every photos brings a smile to my face! I would love to post my kids prom pix, but first of all I don't have them scanned, second, they may frown upon it, so I'll leave you with ours from 1964! :goodvibes

MySrProm1964-1.jpg

My senior prom, 1964, with my now DH, ahhh...the cherished memories!
DH wore a white sports coat w/a pink carnation and I wore a blue gown w/yellow orchids his Dad has raised.

Kelsea wants you all to know how awesome she is. When given the option of a prom or something else. They chose something else.

What on earth could be more appealing than the prom you ask??

A day at The Children's Museum, and dinner, which they invited me to. Whole day cost around $60.00. I was unaware when I dropped them off, that the museum was having a free day and they spent their money on candy, ice cream, coke and a mood ring for kelsea. :rotfl:

I do hearby declare Kelsea is Awesome!

now she's happy:upsidedow

Maybe the reason why a lot of kids have a sense of entitlement these days is because parents don't know how to say no?

Well I maybe one of the lone rangers here but I feel the same way, there should be limits to a one night party...MY goodness wait until she wants to get married..:scared1:

Thank God my kids are grown and my dd paided for her prom herself with the money she had from a part time job...geez I didn't know how good I had it!

After 10 years of enjoying prom photos on the DIS, I finally have some to post.

The entire backyard was so beautiful. The house belongs to one of the boys in the group. About 50 kids arrived for photos and dinner. They had it catered by Pat and Oscar's and the dinner was only $6.00 per person. 36 went in a party bus and the others took limos and their own vehicles. The prom was held at Petco Park - Home of the San Diego Padres.

Here is the best shot of the pool (not so great of DS)

No, you are not alone in your thoughts. I think it's totally ridiculous to spend so much money on a Prom. Gosh, my wedding didn't cost as much as her prom will but then again, my parents said "No" alot.:confused3:confused3

Hi all,

I'm checking in again...prom is tomorrow and I will post pics.

First, I just have to say all of the pic posted of your precious daughters and sons are so wonderful and I have really enjoyed looking at all the gowns and tux's and the smiling faces!

Second, I want to (again) say that I appreciate all of the support regarding the snarky comments about money and "being a good mom"....I don't think what you spend is what makes you a good mom....I think doing your best (defined however it is for you) for your child is what makes you a good mom.

So we have everything all set....dress was picked up and so were the shoes.....for those that have been interested here are some cost tabulations...

Dress.....$229
Alterations.....$65
Undergarment for dress.....$80
Shoes...dyed.....$100
Jewlery......$20
Hair clips......$20
Evening bag.....$35

After prom dress.....$50
After prom shoes......$35
After prom evening bag.....borrowed from me

Makeup......$175
Hair.......$300 (included $150 for the highlights and updo)
Manicure, Pedicure, Eyebrow......$40
Perfume.....already had
Flower for BF......$15

Limo......$240 (per girl 5 couples.....12 hours)
Prom Tickets ..... $250
After Prom Comedy Club......$60
Pictures at the Prom......$30

Trip to Wildwood.....$700

I think that wraps up the cost...I haven't added it up and I dont want to! ;) Before the snarky attacks start...I'll say that she works at Stop and Shop and she has paid for quite a bit of this herself as she has been saving and it is her choice to spend her money in this way!

I'd also like to add that we HAVE HAD the BEST time with this. Again, we have gotten closer and we are really beginning to see and understand how we both think and feel differently on a variety of subjects. The time I have spent with her planning this has been invaluable to me.

So tomorrow it is off to the nail salon, then the hair salon, then the make up artist will come to our house and then she gets dressed....she's off to take pictures at the pre prom and then her prom gets under way.

This week is "Senior" Week in her school. Yesterday they went to Great Adventure and today they get yearbooks. Wed. of course is Prom. Thursday is the Sr. BBQ (although alot are off to the NJ Shore) and Friday they are off. Next Monday and Tuesday is graduation practice and then they graduate on Wed, the 17th. They are really celebrating four years of hard work!
