Who has a kid going to the prom this year?

I'm so excited!!! My son is going to take his GF, which he's been swearing to never do for the past 4 years.

I wonder how much I'm going to have to shell out for a tux for him? And flowers? Oh geez, and dinner and tickets! Yikes. That kid needs a job! :scared1:

ETA: as I was typing this, my son texted me saying he wanted a red tux, and then his girlfriend sent me one right after saying, "He is not allowed to wear a red tux to PROM!" :lmao: I think I'll leave it to the two of them to fight out. :rolleyes1

DS just looked at tux's yesterday. I think the whole package is 115.00. He had a $30 coupon. He was just like your son, he swore for 3 1/2 years he wasn't going to the prom, and now he is totally into it. :lmao:

DD swore for four years that she wasn't going to prom either. Guess what I did on Saturday? I spent more on a prom dress than I spent on both of my wedding dresses combined! She fell in love with a dress that belonged to a friend of mine's daughter. Unfortunately it was too small. So we were off on a search for a sea foam green beaded dress with a full skirt. Finally found one at JC Penney so it wasn't too outrageously expensive. And it was on sale. Now we need to do some alterations because by the time we got it beg enough to go around the middle, the bodice was too big. The skirt also needs hemming. But I've been assured that a good seamstress can make anything that is too big fit!

The boys get off easy just needing to rent a tux. Maybe that is why they have to cough up for tickets, flowers, dinner, etc. Although around here they don't go to dinner so its just tickets and flowers.

DD16 is going with her boyfriend ( a senior) We found her dress at JCPenny's too...It was originally $200 was supposed to be on sale for $150 and rand up at $99 (and no tax since we bought in MN):cool1: It is black and white with embroidered flowers and beads...

Prom here is early , next weekend:eek: (apr 18)...which reminds me I have to get over and order his boutineer (howver you spell it)...

DD went to two Saturday. They aren't dating, but good friends so they thought they would escort each other to the other's prom. It was much easier than last year when she was invited to three different ones for three weekends in a row. That was fun, but exhausting. We got a good deal on the dress this year in that she had a hard time finding one in the style she wanted so she rented one from a friend. That was much much cheaper...

The worst thing about this one was that she took her ACT Saturday morning also. It made the day pretty hectic and they kept changing where they wanted to eat since she couldn't get ready until after the test. And, of course we had to plan for pictures.

DD16 (17 next Saturday!) will be going with her boyfriend (a senior) in May. She found her dress week before last. She's been scouring the internet for hair styles. I'm excited for her!

my dd is going on the 25th she is 16 this month going with her bf (senior) her dress cost me NOTHING!!! :cool1::cool1:

she fell in love with my sisters dress she wore a few years ago and my sister told her she could wear it no strings except pics. :thumbsup2

so i told dd i would pay for the accessories and tanning and the hair and nails :woohoo:

so excited for her.

My son's prom is May 21, which is pretty early for NYC.:confused3

The prices are crazy.

$125 per ticket
$200 per person (20 total) for the party bus - That includes a ticket for the post prom cruise around NY Harbor

He hasn't decided on a tux yet :headache:

My niece is going to prom next Friday (April 17th) and I am doing her hair and makeup! I am so excited!!

I went my DFiance's senior prom and he went to my senior prom. I was definitely more of a prom person than he was but we had so much fun.

Parents- make sure you take tons of pictures! Your kids will hate you for it (at the time I did) but now I love looking at those pictures and I know my kids will like seeing pictures of their mommy and daddy at prom- laughing at my hair, his dorkiness and the fashion of the late 90s.

I probably have the most bizarre prom story of all.

My son has a fairly serious girlfriend, but he is not taking her. He is taking a friend that he runs cross country with. He had promised this friend that he would take her if she didn't have a date. So, he had to get "permission" from the girlfriend to take the friend. :confused3

If that's not bad enough, it is no longer acceptable to just ask someone, you have to do it in a "fun" way. This friend wanted the whole experience, so he had to come up with a fun way to ask her. Some kids wrote it in sidewalk chalk outside their date's house, some baked cupcakes and wrote P, R, O, M and a question mark on each of the cupcakes, etc. You get the picture. So my son decided to have me look all over town for a Willy Wonka bar and some gold foil paper so he could make her a Wonka bar with a golden ticket in it asking her to be his date. So there I was with the exacto knife last night slitting open the candy bar, making the golden ticket and trying to hot glue the whole thing back together because he was too busy with homework. :sad2:

It was MUCH easier when my daughter went!

Question for parents of the boys--what is the "in" kind of tux this year?

Oh my goodness, Jill, your son is a real gem! What a sweetheart to do that for his friend. It also says a lot for his character if his girlfriend is okay with it.

I was just looking at prom pictures and the boys I saw had on just regular black or white tuxes with the cummerbund and vests to match the girl's dress. They haven't changed much since I went to the prom. Lucky boys!

Our tickets are $70 per couple, and I found that the tuxes around here run between $100-130. Not too horrible. Thankfully one of my best friends is in charge of the prom this year, so she let me post date my check for the tickets for payday. :thumbsup2

My DD18 went to Minot North Dakota during her spring break and went to the prom up there with her friends. Why oh why did a school in NORTH DAKOTA have their prom on March 21??? But she went and had fun. Her Senior Prom here is May 16th or something like that but I know she won't have as much fun at the one here as she did in North Dakota. But that's just because she just moved here and isn't as close to the kids here as in ND.

Last year for her junior prom I spent an insane amount of money on her dress, but this year we found one she loves at JCPenney's and it was on sale!!

sorry....I can't resist....must....post.....pics.... :rolleyes1

Cute prom pics... the date is a cutie as well!

Tickets are really expensive here --I want to say at least $200 if not more. There is a Project Graduation thing after the prom at the school (sanctioned activity) but I don't know the cost of that as well.

I had no idea that asking for prom had to be creative.. that is news to me.

my Junior is going with her Senior boyfriend...in 2 weeks. He hasn't gone to get his Tux yet:scared1: We got Cassidy's dress at Dillards for $8.75....yep, you read it right. For less than $50 I got her this entire ensemble:

Shoes: $12.50
Dress: $8.75
Tux Jacket: $12 ish
Purse: $8

huge smile on the kid's face: priceless

We get out of school for the summer about that time. It got extended due to snow & ice so I'm not sure what day we end now. It seems strange to me because you said that is early. Wow. I didn't know we had such big differences in school years.

Is it common for ladies to have tux jackets now? I read the post and I thought that you were buying the guys tux jacket.

I have never seen that before.

My cousin who I have custody of went to her Senior Prom this past Saturday night. Her dress was her school colors black and white, her date wore black pants, white chirt, black vest and white jacket, they looked so nice together. She hasn't given me any pics yet.

One girl wore a dress made of peacock feathers, so very unusual. Iwish I could post the picture she sent me, but I can't from here.

I'm so excited! I'm going to two proms this year; my own and a childhood friend of mine. This will be my third and fourth (respectively) proms. It's picture time now!

My boyfriend and me at prom last year. I don't know if I'm going to be able to top this outfit. The dress is Jay Godfrey and all accessories are Betsey Johnson.

My face is dumb here, but my hair was so cool. I loved it!

This is from this year's winter formal. BCBG never lets me down.

I have no idea what I'll choose for prom this year. All I know is that this is one of my favorite times of the year!

DS is a senior and just broke up with the only serious girlfriend he has ever had. Don't get me wrong - the break-up was the best thing that could have ever happened; I'm thrilled he's free of her! But he has been so down in the dumps over the whole thing. I just HOPE he decides to ask some cute girl to the prom and has some of the fun he has missed out on lately.
