Healthy Living around the World Showcase ~ June 2016 WISH Challenge!

Being a singleton my whole life is pretty much about treating myself. I'm addicted to color as much as I am to sugar, and have been known to frequent fabric and yarn stores to get my fix... And bring stuff home. Lots of stuff. At least fabric gets made up in to quilts, eventually, but yarn most often ends up in the basket. I've been thinking maybe I should be a producer instead of a consumer and am starting to get interested in the entire wool industry. In my wildest day dreams I'm starting to think about becoming a sheppardess and getting my own flock of sheep, as a second post-retirement career. I'm going to be taking a couple natural dyeing classes later this summer, to get my feet wet... So to speak.

But I'm getting way off track. No cake yesterday but some ice cream, overall points looked better and the scale was kind this morning.

Happy Monday all! Here's to a healthful new week.

I love your dream! And I'd love to hear more about your natural dying class! I was a home economics major but my concentration during that time was on fabrics and historic preservation. I did a few projects involving natural dying and it was fun!! I have a friend who is a super dedicated knitter.... so much so that they bought their own alpaca!!

EPCOT France Pavilion, home of the Croque Glace  It took only one screening of the Impressions de France video at the pavilion to make me want to book a trip to France... and left a year ago today for London and Paris. (I am so sad to think it's been a year!). Sadly "real" France isn't quite Epcot France - Paris is a "sh!thole" as I so eloquently told my global business professor - but the provincial France area is great. The Monet Gardens and the surrounding areas of the provincial towns feel like you're literally in a real-life Beauty and the Beast town scene. We had lunch at this adorable tavern and enjoyed the rural areas more than the major city. And of course - Disneyland Paris was phenomenal :)

I have a lot of feelings about this pavilion. :P

In response to the question, luxury bribes are all that motivate me! I try to not reward myself with food but with tangible items --- a new purse, a skirt, something small. Heck, losing 75 pounds equated a personal shopper day at Nordstrom and I achieved Level 3 cardholder status in one go o_O

If/when the day comes when I EVER get to go to Europe, I'll be sure to stick with the "pretty" part(s) of Paris.... otherwise it would be too depressing!

Thanks @Oneanne and @Zoesmamma03 - I am just doing it at home with a DVD - don't really want to spring for special shoes! I may bite the bullet and just buy some new exercise shoes in general and chat to them about the different types of exercise I do to get the best support.

I hear you on that - this is me also - plus I have clothes shopping at the moment as NOTHING looks good.

Have you ever tried doing your Zumba barefoot? I sometimes do my WATP videos barefoot (on the carpet).

Good morning all! DS let me know at the last minute that he had Spring sports awards night last night and he got his varsity letter!! In the track and field world you have to earn a certain number of points in a season to get your letter (unlike most sports where you just need to make the team to get the letter) and he only competes in a few events (last year it was just discus and javelin, this year it was long jump, triple jump, and discus), so not a lot of opportunity. And he only started doing this last year. But despite not earning the requisite points, he still got his letter last night! Not sure why (maybe because he was a Senior), but we are just tickled. Nice way to top off his (brief) high school sports career!

Laundry and yard work are topping today's schedule.... and of course, I have my WW meeting tonight, so I'll have to put some time aside to prep for that. My SIL gave me a bag full of dresses over the weekend.... she is on some medication that has caused some weight gain so anything she can't wear she passed to me. I'm not insulted because she has always been super small and I am beyond excited that I can fit into her cast-offs (sizes 4-8). Some of them aren't really "me" and I will try to find someone else to pass them to, but a few of them are PERFECT to wear to my WW meetings. I love having a super easy comfortable one-piece outfit to just slip into and go.... makes dressing up so much easier! Plus she is a big shopper/fashionista and some of these dresses still have the tags or have never been worn.

Okay.... breakfast is needed.... I'm hungry this morning! TTYL........................P

You must have read my mind Pamela! lol - I was tonight thinking I will try it in the morning in bare feet (couldn't be worse than the other night in my shoes) I have carpet in the part of the house I am doing it so that should help somewhat :-) I was just hoping for a good quick option now that it is winter here but can still get some cardio in when I can't go for a walk.

Congrats to your son - so not fair about the difference in when you can get the letter between the sports - but yeah he got it after all.

Question of the Day for June 13:

A new week and a new country! We are moving to France today!

mfp102783LARGE.jpg

France is a country that often is associated with luxury goods: fashion, champagne, perfume and so on. While most of us would not have any interest to wear the clothes that are being shown at the couture fashion shows in Paris, small doses of "luxury" can be great as non food related treats now and then, a new book, a new mascara, a trip, a facial, new clothes - the list is long.

Do you use non food "luxury" treats consciously as a motivational tool? What are your favourite non food "luxuries"?

I do not use non food luxuries as a motivational tool. I did try to get to a certain weight for this trip but it was more of a goal then a tool.

We ate at Chef De France on Friday. It was really good food.

Just a quick check in. I am back at work today. The kids and I had a hard time getting up this morning. Things seemed to have held up while I was gone and I only came back to 1 voicemail. Yay!!!!!

Yesterday was some what busy. My daughter had an eye doctor appointment with a specialist. I have answers to what is wrong but not really what I wanted to hear. We have know for a few years that the inside muscles of her eyes are weak which makes it hard for her to cross her eyes to read. She has more going on then that. Her brain is also not firing the signals to her eyes to do what they are supposed to. Also her eyes are not working together. Thankful this should be fixed with therapy. We will be doing this for 18 weeks and it is not cheep and they don't take insurance. I did get some insight to what she is seeing. She was telling the doctor that when she reads she sees double and it is blurry. After being told a month ago that she does not need glasses we were told yesterday that she does. She is not happy about that. She hates them. She only needs to read. They will have a prism in them to help her read correctly. We will go today to pick them out. I feel bad for her but after the 18 weeks she should be good.

Since we have to go to the store tonight I will not get a chance to work out. I will still take a walk this afternoon and get my 10,000 steps. Ok I need to go and get back to work. Have a good day!!!

Pjilla... What an interesting major to have. The class I'm interested isn't untl August, but this weekend I'm heading out to the yarn shop that's putting it on to connect with them. They've just published a book about farm to market wool industry, which is exactly the info I'm looking for. I follow a bunch of wool people on Instagram and have just started reading their blogs, instead of just looking at the pretty pictures. One store in Denver has just sourced a new yarn and written about the steps involved. I follow sheep farms from Wales to just across the Sound here in Seattle, so there have been tons of cute lamb pics. One farm just had lambs attacked by a dog, heartbreaking but exactly the reality check I need to be exposed to. Lots to learn and think about.

Question of the Day for June 14:

We are still in France - and if we were in the real France at the moment we would be able to experience all the excitement of the UEFA European Football Championship! And not to confuse our American friends on this threads: We are talking about soccer here... This is the French National Team, also known as Les Bleus (the Blues):

frankreich-team-100~_v-gseagaleriexl.jpg

The event runs from June 10 to July 10 and this year for the first time 24 teams are competing. There is a group stage and then a knockout phase starting with a round of 16, moving on to quarter finals, semi finals and then the final on July 10. The games are being played in 12 different venues all over France. And you can be sure that the whole country currently is talking football everywhere. I still remember how 10 years ago Germany hosted the FIFA World Cup and Nuremberg, where I live was one of the venues. It was such a fantastic party! I am sure the French know how to party as well
(and won't some crazy hooligans destroy the party...).

Don't worry, I won't bother you with a soccer specific question of the day! But soccer is a team sport, so let's talk about teams! Are you a team player in your life or in some aspects of it? Do you have a team that helps you with your healthy living or do you prefer to just do your own thing?

I do my own thing I'd say. I'd say I had a lot of help and encouragement when I first started 6.5 years ago, and back then I'd use the team analogy as having had coaches. Now my journey is more my own. I still have a cheering section in that I have family and friends that support me, and I suppose a coach in terms of my running, but I'm mostly on my own, in a good way.

I'd say I'm mostly a do your own thing kind of healthy living person. In the past, I've always joined WW when I was successful. I think it's a great program that really teaches you how to eat. But, the $$ part of it always gets in my way. I think it puts too much pressure on me...actually it doesn't put the pressure on me, I put it on myself. Even though DH and I earn a pretty good living and I can afford it, in the back of my mind I feel like if I don't lose every week, I'm wasting my money. I know it's completely silly and probably goes back to the not good enough to spend money of something for just me, but at this point, it's how it is.

So, this time, I'm trying to do it through MFP and even though I'm not breaking any losing records, I'm ok with it. Thursday will be 4 months since I started and I've lost 29.5 pounds. I hoped it would be more by now, but I'm happy with where I've gotten. We leave for vacation Thursday and will be gone for 2 weeks, so I know I won't lose a lot during that time, but I'm hoping that by this time next month, I'm back to where I am now. That will leave me a little leeway on our trip and time to get back in the swing of things when we return.

I'm currently watching Portugal v Iceland (come on Iceland!) so would have been happy to answer a football (soccer) question.

My husband is my "team". I know I can count on him for support. I had an awful morning at work but came home tonight to a new sports top which he'd bought me at lunchtime - I know what I'll be wearing to the gym tomorrow morning!

Oooh . . . Euro 2016. I'm actually watching Portugal vs Iceland right now (go Iceland, can't believe they are about to pull off a draw!). Between the Euro and Copa America, my soccer loving household is in heaven.

I have to say, I am doing this on my own. I have the support of many people, including all of you, but I don't have a personal trainer or a coach or even an exercise buddy. When I get to a healthy weight, I think I would like to hire a personal trainer to help me build more muscle. But right now, I don't want to mess with success, so to speak!

In terms of my life I am a team player. My work with the local high school theater group is all about working together to get the best production on stage.

When I am in a family situation I need to be a team player since there are so many drama queens in both families. Example when I was a teacher I had a very commanding presence and was not afraid to speak up about problems that I didn't agree with. The day after my father died I was in school to take care of paper work and I was saying how I had to now keep my mouth shut so as not to rock the boat. My principal's remark was "I can't believe that you are the quiet one in your family." MY response was "when you come from a family of 5 girls and one boy someone has to be the quiet one."

IN terms of my health I am a loner on this. I make all the decisions about what I eat and what I do

Off to get dinner going and to sew some more squares for a quilt I want to give a friend who is retiring next week. We have known each other since college and have been at the two high schools since we graduated.

Have a happy and healthy evening.

I consider myself a team player -- as long as other members of my team recognize that we are a team. When it becomes "every man for himself" I shut down and play hardball. Game on - I play to win.

Last night was night number 2 of 6 waking up at 3am to making dining reservations for our December trip. I feel like a zombie at the moment. o_O

We missed out on Be Our Guest lunch - which is probably due to the Mickey Christmas Party taking place that evening. However we were able to get into the breakfast and after reviewing the menu --- it seems like a happy accident. It's going to be so hard to choose a meal options because they all look beautiful. I saw pictures and descriptions of the items on DisneyFoodBlog and I am so happy things worked out this way. We have a 9:20am reservation, which allows us a little bit of park time for rides before heading into breakfast. We can then use our fast passes for the afternoon!

Side note: One advantage to staying on property is making the 180+10 dining reservations and my husband and I thought of a solution for this: reserve the cheapest on-property hotel stay possible, make the 180+10 reservations and then cancel the hotel once we're done. We get back our deposit and I'm not doing the zombie-reservation-game for a week. :rotfl:

I just saw this and it has some great points from the book State of Slim by Hill and Wyatt

Be active every day
There's no getting around it -- to stay lean, you must be consistently active, and there are certainly strategies that can increase your step count. Without regular movement, your metabolism becomes slow, sluggish, and inflexible. And an inflexible metabolism makes weight gain inevitable and lasting weight loss next to impossible.

2. Fuel up on real food
At restaurants and at home, the emphasis is on quality, not quantity. A healthy-size portion of a great-tasting dish is better than a huge serving of fare that's filled with refined carbohydrates, fat, and sodium -- even if that big portion costs less money.

3. Create your own healthy environment
It's our communities and immediate surroundings -- the plethora of parks, the bike paths in our neighborhoods, and our friendly walking groups -- that provide an important nudge for healthy living.

4. Stay true to your purpose
We all have an inner purpose (what we want to accomplish with our lives), but you may not have ever connected your purpose with weight-loss success. Consider this: Is the way you are living your life consistent with what you want to achieve?

5. Believe you can succeed
Your mental outlook can determine how effective you are in making permanent changes in your life. Instead of saying, "I'll believe it when I see it," Coloradans tend to have the mind-set that if you believe it, you will see it.

6. Make healthy living fun
We've seen other diet experts urge people to become vigilant about their diet and physical activity program, but Coloradans have taught us that this is a backward approach. Yes, people who succeed at weight loss and healthy living do spend a lot of time thinking about healthy eating and physical activity. Yet it's not from a place of anxiety or a desire to be "good." Rather, they relish and look forward to these things. The key to success is savoring this lifestyle and doing it in a way that brings you happiness rather than a feeling of hardship. We know this is possible, because we've seen it in our friends, neighbors, and colleagues and in people across the country who have succeeded in losing weight and keeping it off.

We got to eat there for breakfast when we were there in Oct. The food was good. I had the eggwhite thing. I did eat but I was just coming off a 24 hour bug so I was being careful.

Hey guys! I know I've been MIA for a while, I was off the computer, so I'm just going to catch up with the QOTDs and hopefully be back to chatting tomorrow.

So, let's talk about shopping: Tell us about what was the best thing that you bought for your healthy living progress! Or tell us what you plan to buy in the future or what you would love to buy. Or even all three!

Hmm... best thing I bought may be my running belt. It's nice to have a place to put my phone so that I can access it easily, and all the pockets make it easy for me to store food - and if I didn't have a place to store food, I probably wouldn't be able to run the distances that I run!
My Garmin is also great, but I didn't buy that, that was a gift/hand-me-down.
I want a Fitbit Aria scale. We only have one scale in the house, and its not always easy for me to get to, so I've been thinking about buying a scale to keep upstairs, either in my bedroom or in my bathroom. I like the Aria because it syncs with my Fitbit account and there's no temptation to lie about the number!

Do you pack lunches (or other meals when you are on the go) to bring with you? What do you usually bring and what is your favorite?

Oh ... me and my PB&J lunches.
When I was working full-time, my lunches were a rotation of sandwiches (either PB&J, cream cheese, or tuna), salad, or greek yogurt. Now that I'm home most of the time, it's not an issue, but if I'm going out, I usually bring a PB&J sandwich with me.
I know that once I start working full-time again, I'll need to think about lunches more, but I'm going to wait a little bit to worry about it. I'm definitely more of a packer than buyer (it probably comes from packing my own lunch throughout high school), so at least I know I have some control over what I eat.

Do you use non food "luxury" treats consciously as a motivational tool? What are your favourite non food "luxuries"?

I used to "give" myself money to buy clothing or books when I was losing weight or exercising or whatnot. But lately I've been very careful about spending money, so that kinda disappeared. I might get back to it eventually, but we'll see.

Do you use non food "luxury" treats consciously as a motivational tool? What are your favourite non food "luxuries"?

Don't worry, I won't bother you with a soccer specific question of the day! But soccer is a team sport, so let's talk about teams! Are you a team player in your life or in some aspects of it? Do you have a team that helps you with your healthy living or do you prefer to just do your own thing?

I like to think that I'm a team player, but when it comes to my healthy lifestyle, sometimes the people in my life don't want to join my team, so I have to play alone. It's difficult at times, but ... whatever. It is what it is.

Hmmmm... I guess I'm a little bit of both. At work definitely its all about the team. In my personal life I go it alone most of the time, but I've also been really tuned in to finding "my tribe" and getting connected. As a matter of fact I was just talking to my doctor about this tribe... Disney+Healthy Living. My womens Glamping club is another tribe, and as already mentioned earlier today I'm currently searching for my wool tribe. I will say though that I really struggle with asking for and accepting help, which is a skill I need to develop as it is part of being in a team/tribe.

We got to eat there for breakfast when we were there in Oct. The food was good. I had the eggwhite thing. I did eat but I was just coming off a 24 hour bug so I was being careful.

Glad to know you liked it. The price is $24 per person, but includes a drink, pastries and a meal. When I look at it like that, it's not really that expensive. Usual breakfast is $15 for Mickey Waffles at a hotel and a drink is $3.30 now. Add in a few bucks for the pastries and a premium for the space, I totally get it. Plus the "tip" is included in the meal. So really paying $55 for that meal isn't too outrageous when put into that context.

I'm leaning towards either the quiche, open face egg sammich, and the meat/cheese plate. I can't choose!
