Disney with Geeks!

Can't wait to read more. I'm in Disney withdrawl, missing my happy place.

I too, am a fellow Whovian - a 10th doctor fan.

Reading along! Wish I would've caught this in the PTR stage. Personally a big fan of Tolkien, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones. I saw that you've read Goodkind and Eddings (I have all their books myself), I'd suggest picking up Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles) and Lynch (Gentleman ******* Series) if you haven't read them yet :thumbsup2

The 10th Doctor is my favorite! I wish more people recognized me as the Doctor at MNSSHP.

I am excited for the new doctor though. I will miss Matt Smith, but I think it will be nice to see how a new doctor is.

I actually brought "Polgara the Sorceress" to read on the plane, but I was so excited to be going that I couldn't concentrate!! Lol

Great pics! We are a family of hat-tryer-ons too! (not sure that is the technical term) My favorite is the Yoda with the Mickey ears. Awesome!

I know right?!?! I wish we had done more of the hat trying on! and I found out later that my friend Diane (the one I am going to WDW with in 2015) LOVES Yoda. I really wish I had known about that before. I got her one of those baby Simbas in a leaf blanket things they are selling now.

So. We went back to the room after we bought our hats (Scott bought a pirate one too, the one with the earring). Our bags were there when we got there. Danny was worried they would be lost but I had faith in Disney lol. We unpacked and went to bed. Usually I lie out of a suitcase when I travel, but since we were gonna be there 12 days I figured I would use the dresser. It was cute in my drawer someone had carved Mark + Someone with a heart. I couldn’t make out the second name.

So the next day we went to Magic Kingdom! I mean, that’s what you do right? The first day you go there. My friend Diane, who has been to WDW many times wanted to see my face before I went in, so I took this one:

I took sooooo many pictures this day… here are a few…

So, after we walked down main street, Scott was thirsty, so we had to find someplace he could get a drink. I wanted to wait, because we were about to get lunch (at Cosmic Ray’s), but he was desperate. So he got a soda at Casey’s Corner. We didn’t eat there because none of us really likes hot dogs. We decided to get lunch (since it was about 11:00), and it took danny and I about 10 min to be able to find a place that accepted the dining plan, because we didn’t bring the list. We decided on Cosmic Ray’s. We went simple with food. Tony and I had burgers, and I think scott had chicken and Danny had a burger. Danny and scott got the chocolate gelato, which they didn’t like, and tony got the chocolate cake, which was ok, but waaaay too much frosting. I had the no sugar added mango gelato, which was light and refreshing. I am not a fan of gelato in general ,but this was ok.

After lunch we decided to go on some rides. First, we went on Stitch. Worst. Ride. EVER. The harness thing hurt, it was gross, and it was lame. It is the only ride I won’t ever go on again.

After that, we went on Buzz Light year, where I was pummeled. I got only like 2500 points.

Of course Tony won I think. After that, we realized we didn’t get our photopass card! So while Tony and Danny smoked, Scott and I went to the photopass place to get the card. On the way, we saw the Dream Come True Parade.

It was awesome. I grabbed some confetti for scrap booking. It took forever to get our photopass card. On the way back to tomorrowland, we also saw the Dream Along With Mickey show.

Scott bought Danny some plain ears…

We then went on the People Mover, and the Carousel of Progress. Both were tame, but gave us a chance to rest our feet and cool off. We decided our last stop at Tomorrowland would be Space mountain. I was a little nervous, since I am not great with roller coasters. But I did ok. My only problem was that my ears kept falling off lol. Good thing I had the chin strap!

Next Stop: Fantasy Land!! Thanks for reading along!

I wish I had known about this before we went lol

Yeah, I tend to assume any one who's been on the Dis for a while knows about it. Sorry about that.

Scott had Hail Caesar - Classic Caesar salad with prosciutto crisps, grape tomatoes, croutons & shaved parmesan, and he had chicken on it. He liked it, but he had some kind of balsamic vinegtette, which he didn’t like.

Now how is it a "classic" Caesar salad with a balsamic vinaigrette? :confused3

You might start a thread on the Disney Dining Review board, if you haven't; your food pics would probably go over pretty well there. ;)

I like the ears hat you got. :thumbsup2

Unless they've traded out the floats or something, that's the "Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It" parade you guys ran by. I like that one because you can get right out there and dance with them, and it's kind of a mini-event that's pretty easy to see. Or maybe I like it just because I hate the crowds with the regular one. :rolleyes1

But probably not -- I like the trolly "parade" a lot, which is also a little short performance and then they run off, so maybe it's just that I've got a short attention span or something. :p

I wondered that too, but not my call lol :confused3

Yeah, I plan on doing that soon!

Thanks! I was hoping to show them to Jack Sparrow, but we didn't see him at MNSSHP

you are correct. idk why I called it that lol. I knew that's what it was lol

Fantasy Land!
I was so excited! The first thing we did was on my Disney Bucket list. (I wish I had made a real Disney Bucket list for this trip. I am definitely doing it for the next one!) The Tea Cups!

And ok, I was soooo excited for this ride, because 1. I LOVE tea cups at other places. And 2. Every Disney commercial has families enjoying this ride. Let me just say, I was disappointed. Mainly because the cups are deceptively small. Like really really small. It was Tony, Scott and I in the cup (Danny doesn’t like tea cups, they make him sick). And let me tell you, it was a squeeze. And not on the seat, but for our legs. We were all just way to tall. I could see like 4-5 kids fitting in a cup, but may more than 2 adults is just too many.

Next we went to the Pooh ride. The queue line was adorable. They have it set up for a little play ground. You can go into Pooh’s house, and Eeyore’s teepee thing, and knock on Piglet’s door (which was my favorite part. He says stuff like “no one is home!”). It was a little loud, but what can you expect. It was also one of the longer lines. It was at least 30 min (which, to me, isn’t that long. Later in the trip the line was 65 minutes. That ride is soooo not worth over an hour wait, but ½ and hour is ok). It was a fun queue, and the best part was the honey screens, that are touch activated and you can draw on the “honey”.

Tony wanted to ride the Little Mermaid, so we headed over there, stopping by Gaston’s on the way.

Ok so first: Gaston’s area. AWESOME. I love the décor there! There are so many little details! In the little dining room area, there is a dart board, and the scores are hilarious. Plus, take a look at the surrounding walls! There are darts everywhere! I decided I wanted to try Lefou’s brew at some point. I was hoping to see Gaston, but it turns out he only shows up every 2-3 hours (I asked) and we had just missed him every time we were there.

The Little Mermaid ride was cute. The queue is cute, but it is hot. There are just a lot of people in there, and it is in a cave or whatever and it makes it hot. Also, there isn’t a lot to look at. There is the Scuttle room, and the round-about room, but other than that? Not much. My only qualm about the ride itself? It goes from “Kiss the Girl” to the end of the movie. They are super detailed and cute up until then. Just MHO.
After The Little Mermaid, we went to Peter Pan, but it was closed. So we went on Small World. Its creepy, but you have to do it right? It was actually not as creepy as I was told, but it was interesting (and a little racist… I mean… lol). I was a rebel and touched the water… not when anyone was looking, but… lol. After that we stopped in the shop between SW and Philharmagic. I got my mom some ears with her name on it. I wanted to get her some because she was into it as a kid and joined the mailing list as a kid, but her mom wouldn’t cough up the extra 2 bucks or whatever to get the ears. Danny and Scott got their names on their hats too. After that we went to Philharmagic. So cute. I was surprised it was a 4D show not just 3D.

By this time, it was getting late, so we wanted to make our way to dinner. If you recall, this is the dinner at Garden Grill that no one else knew about. Everyone was pleasantly surprised. It is one of those meals where you get a family style meal. Queue the food porn and Character Photos!

First was the Warm Buns and Salad:

Pluto was our first character!

While I was finishing my Photo op with Pluto, Chip showed up, and he and Pluto had an “argument” because Pluto was not done with us, but Chip wanted to meet us. Lol

I showed Chip Tony’s lanyard and he was super excited!

The Waiter took our picture

As you can see, I was on the inside, which made it so that I didn’t get a photo with Mickey later, because he didn’t stay long.
The food was good. From L-R in this photo it is: mash potatoes, steak, tilapia with roasted veggies, and turkey and stuffing. I LOVE DISNEY MASH. It is so buttery and smooth. The steak was good (every time Danny had steak, he liked it better than the last lol). The fish was very good, but I didn’t like the gravy/sauce stuff on the turkey. It had capers on it. The turkey was also very dry.

Tony was anxious to meet Dale. When the next character showed we were hopping it was Dale, but it was Farmer Mickey. He high fived the guys, and “kissed” my hand. Very cute.

Chip showed up again, and Tony was upset he hadn’t seen his favorite Disney character yet. We told Chip that his brother was missing, and he (Chip) looked at his “watch” and “told” us Dale was slow lol. Finally Dale showed up. Tony was very excited!

For dessert there was a pie like thing with berries in it and vanilla bean whipped cream on top. It was yummy.

Scott got a special dessert for his birthday with a card signed by the characters.

After dinner, we were beat, so we went back to the resort. We found this little guy waiting for us!

The Next day we went to Animal Kingdom (my most trying day, and the one I have the least pics for)

I forgot to post some of our Photo pass pics form the first day! Here they are!

We took some pics before dinner:

Just re read the last post... Wth is up with my typing skills? Sorry about that...

So, Finally I am telling you about our day at Animal Kingdom!

So it was officially our second day! I don’t really count the fly in day… I knew Tony would be excited for AK, because he loves animals, and wherever we go he wants to see the zoo. I knew from reading the DIS that you kind of gotta go to AK early, but everyone was tired from the day before. We got to the park about 10ish? Of course we had to snap a Photo Pass pic!

When we got all our maps and things, we saw the Wilderness Explorers join so thing, so Danny and Scott joined!

I knew the first thing I really wanted to see was the Tree. I was actually surprised at how close you can get. I mean I know you can go on the Bugs Life show, which is IN the Tree, but I didn’t think you could get close enough to get pics like these:

After we took pics of the Tree, we saw a PP person, so we got a few snaps. The guy was really, really weird. He tried to show us a “Magic Trick” with our arms, of course he was messing with us. Side note, the next day, Tony and I saw the same guy at MK. We decided not to have him take our pic there lol. He also gave us our first “Magic Shot”

We decided to head over to the safari first. However on the way, we noticed that Festival of the Lion King was just starting. We decided to see it before the safari. We were in the lion section! It was a lot of fun! It took a little while to have the guys loosen up to be interactive and make noises and sing along. In case I didn’t mention, AK was a very tough day for me. I was trying so hard to make sure everyone was having fun, so by the end of the day I was worn out. I didn’t get a lot of good pics at FLK, but here are some:

Finally it was time for the safari. I was under impressed, but it might be because it was almost lunch time, so the animals were not that active.

This guy was literally right next to me. It was so weird. Just sitting there like it was nothing. Lol

After the safari I could tell that everyone was hungry, so we decided to get lunch. Scott wanted Pizzasafari, but Tony and I didn’t, so we split up. I wanted to try Tamu Tamu, but the food was too weird for Tony. Which kina pissed me off, because he had previously said that he wanted to eat different food, stuff that we can’t get at home. So we ended up at Flame Tree. Not that that was bad, but I can get that stuff at home. On the way, I had to have a talk with him because he had an attitude all day so far, and was also texting his gf all day which was pissing me off. I told him that his attitude was making me not have fun because I was so worried he wasn’t having fun. Of course, he was silent about it. ANYWAY… Tony had the Smoked Turkey Breast Sandwich, which came with a slice of Honeydew Mellon. He also had the Key Lime dessert, and a coke. He said it was really good, and he ate all of the fruit, which I was surprised at. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Cole Slaw. I got the chocolate mousse and a sprite. I usually don’t like Cole Slaw, but this was ok. I ate some. The chocolate mousse was Disney standard. Nothing to write home about. I like that they don’t have lids on the drinks, though it was hard to drink and walk. The straws were interesting, but hard to drink from.

I think Danny and Scott had pepperoni pizza, but as I was not there, I don’t know. While they were on their way to meet back up with us they snapped a photo pass.

oop! I ran out out of pic space!

So, I ran out of room for pics, so here is where we left off!

After we met back up, we went on Kali River Rapids. The line was, again, very short, which was surprising, seeing on how hot it was. It was fun, but yet another ride that I think is over hyped in commercials and videos. I was expecting a longer ride. We also did not get all that wet, which, as we were dying of heat, made us sad.

After the Rapids, we walked through the Animal Trek. It was pretty good. I love the tiger’s habitat. Tony and Danny said they wanted to make a pool like that if they ever built their own houses lol.

I know you are thinking “Oh my gosh, Francine! How have you been there all day and not have ridden Everest?!?!?”. Well, dear reader, keep reading! We went there next!

On the walk there, we again snapped a PP pic!

There is SOOOOOO much to look at in the queue for Everest. You can definitely tell it is the most popular ride. It was one of the few rides that were not over hyped. It was super fun, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like coasters.

We were getting very tired at this point, but we wanted to ride Dinosaur before we left, so we headed over there. I really liked that ride as well. The queue is one of the most boring ones though. With Space Mountain being the most boring one that I saw. The little girl in the front row was so scared, that she was crying the whole time. Her brother, the boy in the second row, kept teller her it was not all that scary and was making fun of her for being scared. But when we got off the ride, he was the one shaking and she was the one wanting to go on again lol.

On the way out we passed by where Pooh and Tigger were meeting and the line was very short, so we went to meet them. Our pics of Pooh were lost. Pooh was another boring character, but Tigger was fun. He bounced with Danny, and couldn’t work my pen lol.

Here is him trying to work my pen:

By the time we were done with Pooh and Tigger, we were beat. We had an ADR at Maya Grill, but I said I had to take a shower before we went, because it was sooooo hot that day. When we got back to our room we saw this little guy waiting for us!

My review for Maya Grill will have to be in my next post. I hope you are all enjoying my TR so far! I know these first ones are super detailed, but that’s because I actually took notes at first lol.

Next time: Maya Grill and Tony and my Free Day, where we hit MK and EP in one day!

Maya Grill and Free Day #1

Before I start, I wanted to let you know something I forgot to put into the MK day! Right after dinner we saw that the line for Soarin’ was only 10 minutes! So of course we went on it! We basically walked on! It was such a fun ride, but there would be NO WAY I would wait more than like 15-20 min for it. It was definitely not my favorite ride of the trip. Probably not even in the top 10. I don’t see why people would wait 90-120 minutes for it! After Soarin’ we hopped onto the living with the land ride, which also had no wait. I did not touch the water. I was not on an end lol. It was interesting to see all that stuff growing, and the hidden Mickey! Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress…

So, when we left off, We went back to the room so we could take showers and recoup from our day at AK. By the time we were ready to go, I thought we had just enough time to get to Coronado Springs. However, it took longer than I expected. Luckily it was not busy there and they seated us in about 2 minutes. They were very nice about us being 10 min late. Our server was named Sixto. He was very nice, and explained everything we asked him. He even showed Danny how to make the origami napkins, and told me the recipe for orchatta margaritas. I really should email them and tell them about him. He was one of our best servers.

So on to the Food porn. The boys all had soda, but you know I had to try the margarita flight. This was the whole reason I wanted to go there. I was so glad they still had it. Well, at first anyway lol. I am not a huge fan of tequila, in fact I really don’t like it, but the flight was too interesting to pass up. Here is a pic of it. From left to right: jalapeno, pineapple, orchatta, classic, and mango blueberry.

So… as I said I don’t like tequila. And this flight didn’t sway me. It was cool, and interesting. However, I did drink all of them (well, ok, I didn’t finish the jalapeno one…). So, here is my review of each flavor: Jalapeño: nope. It was sooooo gross. It smelled weird and had a dirty sock type flavor. I couldn’t finish it.
Pineapple: this one was ok. I hated the salt though. I pealed the salt off of each one after this lol. It still had that tequila smell that I hate though.
Orchatta: I saved this one for last, because I knew I would like it best. It was like egg nog with tequila in it. It was so yummy. I would definitely drink this again. Maybe I will get one when Diane and I go in October 2015. That is, If I can get her to go to Maya (one year 10 months and one week til we go btw lol).
Classic: boring. But I guess if you like classic margaritas you will like it.
Mango Blueberry: This was probably my second favorite. It was smooth and a little sweet. My only issue with it was that I didn’t taste any blueberry at all. I think the only way they called it blueberry was that they floated a blueberry in it.

Now, for food. Danny and I each had the San Antonio Fajita Skillet which was A sizzling skillet of Monterey Jack Cheese topped with Steak for me and Chicken for Danny. It came with Sautéed Onions, Bell Peppers, and Sour Cream served with warm flour tortillas, rice, refried beans, and corn soufflé. We got two types of meat because we decided to split them. It was soooo much food in that little skillet! The beans were standard, and the corn “souffle” was ok. The meat though was so tender and juicy. It was great! My only issue was that the little tortillas that came with it were way too small, and there were only like 3 of them.

Tony had the Beef Enchiladas which was Seasoned beef wrapped in a warm corn tortilla topped with a Ranchero Sauce and melted Monterey Jack cheese and Queso Fresco served with rice, refried beans and corn soufflé. I was surprised he liked this because I didn’t think he would like queso fresco. He ate every bite though.

Scott had the Chimichanga Platter which was Seasoned Beef and Chicken Tinga Chimichanga served with rice, refried beans, and corn soufflé. It was so huge he could only eat about ½ of it!

I really wish we had a microwave in our room! Though, Sixto told us that if you ask for one, they will bring you one… so good to know. If you have done that let me know. So, now on to the best part of the meal. That’s right friends! It’s dessert time! Tony had the fried ice cream, which came with churros.

Scott, Danny, and I all had dessert shots. They were just enough dessert after that huge heavy meal. Scott got the peanut butter one, Danny got the chocolate mud pie one, and I got the Cappuccino Dulce de Leche. Mine was waaaay too sweet, so I didn’t finish it. Scott’s is the first pic, Danny’s the sceond, and mine the third.

So there you go. Maya Grill = one of our top places of the trip.
I wanted to go to bed right away because I wanted an early start the next day, as I knew tony and I wanted to do the rest of MK before we went to Epcot. Tony and Danny wanted to get cigarettes, so we took the bus from Coronado to DTD, so they could buy some across the street at a gas station. Scott and I didn’t go with them, so when we got to DTD, Scott and I decided to take the bus instead of the boat, because our feet hurt and we didn’t want to walk all the way to the boat. Bad decision. It took us at least 40 minutes to get to the resort. If we had taken the boat, it would have been only like 25. So if you have the chance, tip from me to you: always take the boat.

Free Day! The next day Tony and I went out on our free day. Before you ask, Danny and Scott went to HS and ate at Mama Melrose. They enjoyed it all, except their server who ignored them, even though it was not busy at the restaurant. I don’t have any pics from that day except these photo pass ones.

So we got up early (well, early for tony, since I am used to being up at 6:30am), we got to the park at about 10am. It would have been earlier, but the wait for the bus took sooo long. We wanted to start in Adventure Land, and work our way to Haunted Mansion and then hop on the monorail to Epcot, where we would do Future World, and have dinner in Morocco. That’s the basic structure of this day. First, before we even got started, I had to get a birthday button, because, if you recall, I was very jealous of Scott’s because my birthday was just as far as his, and mine was more significant. So I went to the cart infront of guest services and got one, which I attached to my lanyard.

While we reviewed our plan, I wanted to try a famous Dole Whip juice (plus I was sooooo thirsty and hot already). The line was non-existent. I remember passing it another day and the line was insane. I got the pineapple on pineapple one. I figured it was most traditional. It was yummy, but again, I felt it was over hyped. Before you all jump on me, I admit it was yummy! I would definitely get it again (in fact, I did get another one at some other point, which was orange with pineapple juice, and I actually liked it better). It is totally worth a snack credit.

We figured we would climb the Swiss Family Tree House, because it was there. I took a lot of pics because I know my mom would love it, but I won’t bore you with them. It was cool but, as I have read, boring. The view of the castle from the top was nice though. Of course our next ride was Pirates. Diane got stuck on that ride a few years ago, and I wanted to see where it was that she got stuck lol.

Needless to say, we did not get stuck. And of course, as is my tradition from Small world, I touched the water. Lol. I liked the ride though. It was cute. After Pirates we went on the Jungle Cruise. The girl who was our “guide” was so great. She had great timing (I know the spiel is canned, but she did it great, her name was Sara). In the line, we met a geeky family. The mom was dressed in one of those T.A.R.D.I.S slip dresses, and the dad was dressed sort of as 11. One of the kids was Leia. I think the other was a pirate or something… I can’t remember. I was glad to see fellow geeks!
So we made our way after Pirates toward the Haunted Mansion. The line was again short. I think we made it to MK at the right time, so that we didn’t have to wait hardly at all. I was kind of sad that the line wasn’t long at this ride, because I wanted to look at things. Like all the grave stones and things. This was the first ride that we got stuck on. We were stuck in the wedding room. It was only for about a minute or two. I liked this ride a lot. There was so much to look at.

We had to hit the bathrooms that are Rapunzel themed, of course. I was so disappointed with the inside of the women’s bathroom. I wanted there to be more theme in it. But I will get over it. And we walked back through the castle, because I wanted to see the tile mosaics in the hall.

We took the monorail over to Epcot. We were going to eat lunch as a food and wine fest snacks, but Tony was too hungry for that. So we ate at Sunshine Seasons. Read about that in the next post!
How are you enjoying my TR so far? I hope you are. I hope it is informative and fun…

Holy cow -- those Maya Grill plates and platters are huge! I hear a lot that Disney meals can easily be split between two people; doesn't seem that way to me but I can believe it when it comes to those!

So did you guys go around filling in your Wilderness Explorer Handbook? I though those might be fun to do sometime but they don't exactly look exciting. Says someone who has never done Expedition Everest. :p

Did you get much feedback on your birthday button? Stories on that are so mixed; very much the luck of the draw, it seems.

You say you weren't excited by the Safari ride, but you got some great pics, IMHO. Although I like your tiger pic the best. :thumbsup2

I'm enjoying your report. :) Haven't posted because it's crazy around here; this week is production week for the Nutcracker, things should settle a bit after that. I hope!

Loving your TR! Next time we go we're gonna have to try the Maya Grill, it looks fantastic!

I did find the meals large, but Tony had no problem finishing everything on his plate lol. I am not sure that they can be split between 2 people, maybe 1.5 lol. Though, the Maya Grill had the biggest portions of all the places we went to. They seemed endless lol

So did you guys go around filling in your Wilderness Explorer Handbook? I though those might be fun to do sometime but they don't exactly look exciting. Says someone who has never done Expedition Everest. :p

Danny and Scott did a few, but like you say, they were not exciting. I am sure if you have a kid, they are fun, but when you are in your 20s not do much. They are mainly counting and looking for things. I think they got maybe 3 or 4 badges.

Did you get much feedback on your birthday button? Stories on that are so mixed; very much the luck of the draw, it seems.

You know, I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. I personally did not get anything except lots and lots of people saying happy birthday. And at Marakesh (even though it did not say on the ADR that it was my birthday) they sang to me. Other than that, nothing. Scott got a free cupcake one day, but as we had the DDP, he already had a dessert, so he gave it to a kid. Scott did not like all the attention. So be warned: if you wear one pretty much EVERYBODY you see will say happy birthday, patrons included.

You say you weren't excited by the Safari ride, but you got some great pics, IMHO. Although I like your tiger pic the best. :thumbsup2

I did get some good pics, but I couldn't see out of the other side of the truck, because people kept standing up. And the guy in front of me kept pointing out things to his kid, so I have a lot of pics of his arm.

I'm enjoying your report. :) Haven't posted because it's crazy around here; this week is production week for the Nutcracker, things should settle a bit after that. I hope!

No worries! I am just glad someone is reading!! I was worried I was posting for my own enjoyment. Lol

Loving your TR! Next time we go we're gonna have to try the Maya Grill, it looks fantastic!

It was sooooo good! I highly recomend it! Hopefully you will get Sixto as your server. He was sooo nice. I think when I go again, I will see if I can be seated in his area.
