If you want sundaes, Ghirardelli is the best, hands down. We go there all the time and it's fantastic. They have the absolute BEST hot fudge I've ever had!
Ample Hills is completely overhyped. If you like chewing your ice cream, you'll love it. For me, it was just overkill with the "mix ins" and it was overwhelmingly sweet, not very well balanced flavors at all. My teeth hurt for an hour afterwards (they are sensitive to cold and sweet and it was just awful how much I had to chew something so cold).
Beaches and Cream is super fun if you are going to do the Kitchen Sink, but I think their sundaes are way too big for most kids. Plus, you need an ADR which can be hard to get.
Beaches & Cream has counter seating as well that is first come first served. You can get the big sundaes there. You can't get the big sundaes at the to-go window, though.
I do agree that Ghiradelli has some great hot fudge, but we are disappointed they removed all peanut products from the store. No more Gold Rush sundae and no nuts on my hot fudge sundae is a downer. We've tried twice there, but haven't found a replacement sundae that measures up to the No Way Jose at Beaches & Cream.
