Thanksgiving Food

I am so over traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Personally I have no appetite for any of it. I told my husband if he wants it he can cook it himself this year cause I am done. I like the jellied cranberry sauce in the can that I only eat once a year.

You could have sat next to one of my younger sisters for TDay. She insisted on Ocean spray in a can that “slurped” out of it 😁. Sooooo every year a tiny can was placed next to her place setting. Good memories!

I gave the cooking for the holiday to DS and DIL years ago.
Now they are tired of it too......so we will be doing something else.
Maybe just appetizers and desserts!!

This year will mark 2 consecutive years celebrating thanksgiving outside of America, and it can be a lot of fun. It's really nice not to have to cook (although working on Thanksgiving day feels weird).

Turkey with homemade gravy is the star of our show…followed by mashed potatoes, herb stuffing, southern green beans, crescent rolls, and homemade cranberry sauce. I will do Mac & cheese as well as sweet potatoes if requested. Pie is usually pumpkin and lemon meringue. My husband sometimes makes deviled eggs to snack on throughout the day.

My favorite side dishes are the sausage-apple stuffing, sweet potatoe casserole (with both marshmallows & nut toppings) and the homemade rolls. I found the stuffing recipe probably 30 years ago in the Good Housekeeping Cookbook and it is a favorite. Even when we've went to Thanksgiving at other relatives' homes, I always had to make at least a pan of that stuffing afterwards just for our family. :stir:

My MIL makes a corn casserole that is pretty good as well as "Potato filling" which is all the makings of stuffing but instead of the bread, it is mixed into mashed potatoes. And you have to have the green bean casserole.

I do miss my family's sweet potato casserole, we always made it a more sweet version with lots of brown sugar made into a sauce and marshmallows. My Husband's family are not as much for the sweet version and go for more savory.

Once we were guests at a Chinese-American family's Thanksgiving and they had a roast bird stuffed with glutinous (aka sticky) rice. It's a fairly common thing to find in Chinatowns, but typically just pork and mushrooms - possibly wrapped in a bamboo leaf. Maybe wrapped around sausage or chicken like a Oaxacan tamale. Chestnuts can be added for a special occasion which was the case. The rice stuffing was better than the turkey.

Here's one recipe, although this one includes water chestnuts and Chinese-style sausage.

This looks more like what I remember.

The best Thanksgiving dinner I ever had was at a buffet in Vegas - the Wicked Spoon The Cosmopolitan. It was really good although $50 per adult. Worth it though. The line to get in was about 3 hours, but . I've been to quite a few casino buffets for Thanksgiving over the years.

I sooo love sticky rice! It’s like an all course meal in a green packet. Just before DGD left on her adventures I had her buy me a jar of sweet rice. It still sits there waiting for her return 😔.
