Tropical threat?? Leaving in 9 days...

Prayers for everyone in Ivan’s path, both during and after the storm. WDW should be fine, but depending on damage to the power grid, airport, roadways, etc., outside the bubble may take a while to recover.

I hope WDW will be fine. But the fact that part of the Keystone Clothiers facade at DHS collapsed for zero reason the other day gives me some doubts.

Yeah, you’re right, maybe the parks won’t be so fine! My prayers are for the people - especially CMs who may have property damage or be without power at home for some length of time.

Yep- I thought of that too. Category 1 winds don't usually take down buildings, but they can pull off shingles and siding and gutters. I was really surprised that happened this week.
I bet the Animals at Animal Kingdom are FREAKING OUT!
I feel so bad for them. It is going to be so loud for a lot of the next 24 hours- with the sustained howling winds. I know most of them are brought into reinforced pens and barns built to withstand hurricane winds, but they are still going to be scared. I'm wondering if Animal Kingdom will have a lot of tree damage.

I remember thinking about the animals too during Irma, well anyone's animals really. I'm a big softie when it comes to animals.

From Irma there was tree damage in AK so I'd expect probably a good amount more with Ian. From my pictures near the hippo area on the safari had some trees leaning right almost into the water, there was a larger tree down with parts of it in the water on the walkway to get to Pandora. I'm sure more I just didn't take pictures/go in that area.

Fingers crossed though at least right where the animals are at there's not much damage once this all passes. The Safari has some fairly big exposure with landscape.

Buildings at WDW are built to withstand 100mph winds. With the recent lack of maintenance though, I wouldn't bank on it. And if this storm continues to act like Hurricane Ida did in Louisiana last year, WDW could see winds far higher than that. I'm hoping things will be okay, but this is a bit of a worst-case scenario.

Come on... No one needs the fearmongering

I agree...but some posters also don't seem to realize the dangers of a hurricane, including in its pre- and post-arrival periods.

There's a balance to be drawn when a storm this big and potentially this destructive arrives. You don't want people to panic, but neither do you want them to think it's no big deal and someone will be able to see to their every need b/c they are paying for a vacation/hotel room (as one example).

I’ve been watching and listening to the local wildlife around the parks and resorts. The tree frogs outside of our room are going crazy.

Also, does anyone know if this is normal? Tons of white birds along the Epcot drawbridge canal last night. I’m sure it is, but I’ve never seen it before, and the CMs don’t know.

Have you ever huddled with your family in your bathroom all night long, while your solidly built house shifted on its foundation and you could feel the walls swaying? I did, last year, when Ida slammed through New Orleans. And Ian looks to be pretty much the exact same storm. Most people here either A) have never actually been through a hurricane or B) have been through lots of standard normal hurricanes that follow the standard normal rules. But this is not that type of storm. I'd rather see "fearmongering" that makes people take it seriously than the whole "eh, it'll be fine" mentality that can lead to loss of life.

They can withstand 100 mph wind, not 100 mph trees coming out of soggy ground. And there are a whole lot of those.
I don't know that the heavy trees would become projectiles as much as you're giving off. Smaller trees and limbs yes but if you're talking about soggy ground the big heavy trees most often I see pull up from the ground and end up on their side a lot of times still connected to the ground. Now if there's a building structure like a resort room (which poly had a close one to the building for Irma) you could get damage there from falling down.

As far as Disney's buildings the little things attached to it I would be far more concerned about being hurled about because they can be more easily ripped off. I do hope that with the increased strength/gravity of Ian that they've done more than just tie pool loungers and benches in the parks together like they did for Irma because I'm not sure that's going to do it for this one.

I think they say animals know things. Were they flying away like a scene from a disaster movie (sorry only description I can draw)? Couldn't answer if it was normal or not but I can see them sensing things and being in a flurry.

I don't think it's fear mongering to be realistic about the limitations of "safe buildings" in conditions this dangerous. Some people in these threads are talking like a hurricane is just a thunderstorm.

Are they predicting 100 mph winds here at WDW?
