Debt Dumpers 2021

We're back home from our Disney trip and plodding along through August. We had a great trip! Stayed at Boardwalk for the first time, which was beautiful. We really enjoyed being able to walk to Epcot and HS. We both agreed we wanted to check out Yacht Club next. We found crowds to be reasonable and we were able to ride everything we wanted to ride. Other than the 8(!) hour flight delay getting home, we had a great time. And JetBlue comped us both $200 travel bank credits for the flight problems.

Unfortunately, our bad luck with first world problems continues. DH's check engine light came on a couple weeks ago and we dropped it at the mechanic before leaving for Disney. They "fixed" it and we picked it up Monday night after we got home. I got in it to drive it to work on Tuesday and it broke down 5 miles from home. I managed to limp it to the mechanic and told DH to come pick me up in my car. He pulled up to the mechanic in my car and said "something's wrong with this thing, you need to drive it home." Something was, indeed, wrong with it but I was able to get it back home and to work that day. Dropped that car at a different mechanic that afternoon, so we've had no cars all week. My car is easily fixed, though to the tune of $800, but DH's is extremely screwed up. It looks like it will be getting it's third transmission in 79,000 miles (the second one was put in in March). Glad we bought that Carmax warranty, it has more than paid for itself. As soon as the car is fixed, we're driving it straight to Carmax and getting rid of it. I'll be sticking to Toyota and Honda again in the future.

That is awful luck with the cars. Dh's check engine light is back on for probably the 10th time this year. This is after spending over $6k over 2 visits to fix it.
What kind of car is it that's on its 3rd transmission?

Nissan Rogue. They fixed something on it this time without replacing the transmission, so we're getting rid of it today and buying another car. I'm done having this thing in the shop constantly!

Oh, my. I just got back from a Gulf vacation yesterday and our rental car was a 2020 Nissan Rogue! I loved driving it. i have never driven one before and it handled so smoothly and easily. My sister has a 2012 Rogue she got at about 2 years old, I think. She has been quite happy with it.

What year is yours? Do you think that you have a lemon? Of course, I only drove this car for 5 days. It had about 50,000 miles on it.

google search 'nissan rogue transmission problems'. apparently it's a major issue, enough to have given birth to multiple large class action lawsuits covering multiple years of production.

2017. Like Barkley said, it's a known issue with the newer model transmissions. We knew going into it that it would either be fine, or it would start having issues around 70k miles. That was why we bought the extended warranty for it. Sure enough, the transmission started going out at 69k miles. Something was wrong with it and the check engine light came on recently, then it wouldn't go into reverse one day. They're common fleet vehicles because they usually sell those cars around 50k miles before they start having problems. It's a shame because they really do drive well. It's one of the few SUVs that I like driving.

My fiancée has a 2018 Nissan Rogue and hasn’t had issues so far. *knock on wood*

Good luck! Keep on eye on it around 70-80k miles. That's when most of them start having transmission issues. If you feel it start shuttering or slipping, get ready.

We will have finally refinanced as of tomorrow. Our rate was okay at 3.125 but it was a 30 year loan and we are just now 5 years into it. We started exploring refinancing on a whim and were able to get a rate that will technically save us a little over $200/month but we will roll that right into the mortgage payment so we will chip away at the mortgage a bit faster. Our mortgage is not huge but also not small; I just have to keep reminding myself that the cost of living in this part of CT is pretty darn high (these crazy property taxes sure don’t help!).

What a shame (and a hassle for you)! I was even thinking of making that vehicle my next one in a few years. Now I will not consider it. It sure was nice while we were there, though.

What vehicle are you going to replace it with?

I'm transferring in a 2018 Toyota Camry from out of state that should be here in a week! As long as there's nothing wrong with that particular car, I'm buying it. I test drove one today and my brother has one and I really like it! I only didn't buy the one today because it didn't have all the features I wanted. I actually first spotted one of the newer body style ones back when we were shopping for DH's Rogue back in 2019 and couldn't believe how nice they looked. While we are technically replacing DH's car, this Toyota will really be my car since I still have a daily office job. He works from home full time and occasionally runs out for errands/to the office once in a blue moon so he will have my current car to use for that/we can trade off cars if needed or whatever. We'd like to get another SUV maybe around the end of next year.

Me: puts flower seed order into form
Also me: BUDGET! You don't need $50 of flower seeds!
Me: But I'm trying to become a flower farmer.
Also me: $50!
Me: Could this be counted as "research?"
Also me: ...or and investment in our future...
I have this conversation 3-4 times a day with myself: for years it was 2 $20 transactions a day that were killing our budget.

Mine is a one-and-done purchase toward becoming a flower farmer, my future side business. I can collect seed next year for a zero out of pocket.

Still just waiting for an appraisal so we can close on our home. The housing market where we are is crazy right now and the appraisers are way behind. Hoping to be able to close in September!

This year we went and spend a couple of days in Jacksonville visiting my youngest nephew and we really enjoyed it. Next year we thought about flying him to see us and then going to see our daughter while we had him, however; he has never flown and the only place that has direct flights from him is 6 hours away and then our daughter is 12 hours from there. We decided it would be more of a vacation for us if we just went to Jacksonville and stayed longer. Looking on Expedia and there are decent prices so I am considering purchasing it now and adding the vacation just in case. I'm not expecting prices will go down but likely will go up. I looked at purchasing everything individually, however; it is about $400 more that way.

Ya'll, prices are going up everywhere! I had to buy dog and cat food and paid nearly $20 MORE than normal last week. I've never been more grateful that we worked hard to get to our zero CC debt this year. Going to have to start measuring portions per kibble soon. :rotfl2: :dog::cat:

ABSOLUTELY!!!

i think maybe it's more sticker shock for me b/c with so many items, for several years, i've only purchased them in large quantities twice or 4x per years so i REALLY notice price increases.

b/c of the shortages over the winter and spring of 2020 i wasn't able to do my normal quarterly target online paper product purchases so when summer 2020 hit i needed to stock up. first i found that the offers i normally took advantage of weren't there (target gift cards for buying so much which i turned around and used on subsequent orders were a no-go for normal delivery), then i found that prices had gone up a bit. THIS YEAR/THIS MONTH    the price difference over last summer is crazy!!! more than 15% higher on any kind of paper product, my pet food has gone up 20% over what i was paying last summer (i buy it 3x per year on chewey so i looked to see what i was paying last year this month). it is NUTS and i only see it getting worse.

i'm ending up doing larger purchases to cover more months and ideally maximize savings. the cats are set with litter (at one point we couldn't find any of the type/brand we use for months), dry and wet food for the next 6 months, we are stocked on tp, paper towels and tissues until next summer. i took advantage of a sale on dish tabs so i'm good there for 6 months. as far as food goes i doubt the great deals i've traditionally gotten via my local grocer's annual case sales will be happening this fall so i'm just keeping my eye on the ads and stocking up when i find decent prices or better yet loss leaders.

anything i don't spend from my monthly grocery budget is being funneled into a separate savings account to supplement another month's budget in the event of increasing costs.

I'm really hoping that Costco will still be doing their annual "Spend $100 on P&G products get a $25 Costco cash card" deal. It usually happens in September I believe. It's when I stock up on tide pods/unstoppables/TP/dishwasher tabs/etc.
