I don’t own yet so haven’t voted (I assume the <100 option was for people that at least owned some points).

We’re a family of 6 from the UK and know that we’d need a 3 bed for at least 10nights but ideally a fortnight when we come. We’ve been to WDW about 6/7 times in the last 14years and it’s absolutely my ‘happy place’. I miss it every year we don’t make a trip. But we’d need to buy ALOT of points if we wanted to come for a fortnight in a 3 bed every year. We could buy a house out there for similar money or less when you’ve added in the dues! We’ve also NEVER stayed on property! Only in a rented house off property. But I can’t help but think it would be a better investment than a house. And if we used it 3 times and weren’t as happy on property as we are renting a house, we can sell on.
Member fees are about $8 per point (varies depending on where you buy), so if you need around 1000 points, that is about $8000 in member fees every year. That doesn’t include buying the points, which at 1000 would go between around $100000 at a place like Saratoga resale and around $200000 at Riviera or Copper Creek direct purchase from Disney. It is probably way less expensive to rent off property, or even buy a house off property, but if you want to be on property and you want to buy dvc, I would ask if you could maybe fit into a 2 bedroom. You might be able to get one of those for around 600 points for 2 weeks. But for both the 2 and 3 bedroom, it all depends on what weeks and where you stay as to how many points you need.

Exactly! In a dream world, we want 2 weeks at Riviera in October. We’d need 1712 points for 2021 to do that in a 3 bed at Riv and do it every year. It’s certainly not cheap. But it is cheaper than booking that as a holiday every year (that’s if there was even availability). It almost begs the question: a house or DVC. Maybe that’s a whole other Thread I should start...

What you would also need to consider is the costs associated with owning a house: real estate taxes, utilities, maintenance (landscaping, painting, minor repairs, security, pest control, pool, etc), Home Owner's Insurance, plus major repairs such as plumbing, masonry, roof, electrical, Central AC, etc. Within the same decades you would own DVC, you can expect to replace all appliances (kitchen, laundry, TVs, etc), furniture, etc in a house. If you are considering renting the house out when you are not there, you need to factor in higher maintenance & replacement costs (higher use = lower lifespan), as well as more frequent refreshing/replacement of décor, & replacing linens, cookware, etc. There is also the likelihood that, since you don't live nearby, you would probably be best off hiring a property manager.
These numbers don't even include the costs incurred for transportation (Gold APs are available to both FL residents & Blue Card DVC Members, so that is a wash).
We had looked into buying a house there (only for vacations & perhaps rentals, we have no interest in actually moving to FL), but found the costs & headaches wouldn't be worth it to us. This isn't to say others don't prefer owning a house there, but that we prefer the lower overall costs, responsibilities & risks with DVC, and the included transportation, superior customer service, quick access to parks, etc included with any WDW resort stay.
You might want to consider getting enough points for a 2-bdrm since you said you are only 6 people......or you could get enough for a 2-bdrm & a studio, which would still be less than a Grand Villa.

We want to add on more but every time we decide to, we find we don't actually need them.

We own 60 points at BWV.

We have banked points at risk of expiring because of cancelled trips this last year.

Our next trip (please, please happen!) is costing 45 points for 5 nights in a studio. lol

So, I guess we wait to add-on yet again!

We plan to do more frequent / short trips as we near retirement in addition to 1 annual family trip. We plan to add on in small increments as we need them. But honestly, I feel like about 200 will be more than enough until (if) our kids both are married with kids and assuming they want the trip - in which case maybe 300 will do. Otherwise, until 2042 when the BWV points chart as we know it will cease to exist.

We’ve done LOADS of maths. Seriously. We’d factored in a lot of those house costs too - but not all tbh so that’s been mega-helpful!
That Last paragraph hits the nail on the head with why we’d want to buy in too! It’s the ease, the convenience, the transport, the being ‘in the bubble’. We’d go off site to universal too and visit the outlets but other than that we’d have little need for any travel. We’d benefit massively from the magical express too - sorting rental car at an airport after an 8 hour flight with 4 kids whose body-clocks think it’s way past their bed time is never fun! 😆
I know it’s expensive but to know we’ve got our own space in a 3 bed to chill in seems like bliss.

@Mkaiser1
Can't you fit in a 2 bedroom you'd be surprised how much room they have. Last few trips we have had 7 people all adults more than enough room too.

Honestly, we'd want to know if we're coming for 2 weeks that we have a proper bed for each of us. The kids really don't need a double bed each, but they do need a bed each if we're there for that long and then my wife and I won't want to sleep in anything other than a 'proper bed'. I know I'm arguably being greedy, but it's a big trip really. And then the living space in a 3 bed is great. We're so used to coming and having a house with a private pool too. That's the big loss to be honest - a private pool. But am I right in saying the resort pools don't get TOO busy as folks are generally in the parks?

We are currently at 800 points and I really, really, really want to add on about 100 - 150 more. Right now, DH isn't quite on board...LOL

I own BWV and SSR...BWV for specific trips and SSR for sleep around points since I just retired and hoping to go almost every month for 3 to 4 nights (except when we do big family trips which should be EOY).

I realize that for December trips, I would love to have home resort advantage at either BLT, Poly or CCV...so working on him to let me add on at one of those...

I'll update in the next 6 - 8 months when I get my way!!!
Do you still own some bwv points or did you sell them all for RIV?

Sold all BWV. One contract when I bought RIV and one in 2020 to buy BLT resale,

That move put me down to 775..BWV was 150 but BLT was 100..but because it came with so many extra points and BWV was mostly stripped, its Like the same for the next few years!

Of course, with the Covid canceled trips, I wont need to buy more for a few years...goal is 1000.

Do you have any regrets over selling all BWV points? Just curious we might sell a couple contracts for RIV.

Not a one! Sold a 2042 to get a 2070 and 2060 end date for the replacement contracts.

My actual regret? I should have bought direct instead of BLT resale. It’s a pain having one contract restricted and the other not when booking RIV as part of the stays, since they resort will pretty much always be part of a split stay.

I could have gotten 100 RIV points for about $4500 more than BLT resale and would have flexibility for all.
