Marathon Weekend 2021

SAFD:

Unfortunately, I always have too much anxiety to attend many of the meetups. Family vacation obligations are a convenient, if relatively unavoidable, excuse. I wish I wasn't so irrationally worried about things like this, I know everyone is incredibly nice and all of my previous experiences have verified this fact, but it's still incredibly difficult for me to work up the confidence and courage to do simple things like talk to people.

That said, I did attend one meetup a couple years back and I owe finishing that year's marathon to people who recognized me from the boards and lifted my spirits when I was considering how to least painfully exit the race.

I've also had multiple chance meetups with people who recognized me from the boards and they have always been very nice as well.

SAFD: what everyone else has said - I feel like I know so many of you just from posts on these boards, and actually meeting you guys IRL is so fun! We are all different people, of various ages and backgrounds and from all over the place, but we all have some important things in common - love of Disney and love of running!

SAFD: I'm a journalist, so meeting and talking to people is what I do for a living anyway and I enjoy it. I like that we come from so many different walks of life, have different careers, different families, different interests and are all united by a love for Disney. I'm the only person in my family, friend group, office, etc. that enjoys Disney this much, so coming down for Marathon Weekend feels like I'm being reunited with "my people."

I like that whether there's five of us or 30, everyone brings a little something different to the table. The serious runners, the serious partiers, the serious Disney fanatics. I get tips on where to eat, where to drink, how to train, when to get in line for a ride and all of it enhances my Disney experience.

You say this like those are different people

I got two emails yesterday, regarding that the cancellations for my daughter's 5k and my 5k were complete, and I should be getting emails from Disney Gift Card Services, soon, regarding getting my money back. They emailed me a couple of hours later, but with only one e-gift card worth $94, which is one 5k registration.

Should I be concerned, yet, about not getting the other e-gift card?

Edit: found it. My daughter got the email.

SAFD: One of the things I appreciate most about this community is our encouragement of each other. I trained for my first half marathon almost entirely by myself. I had no idea what I was doing and was afraid to share my fears on running forums because I thought I would be told that I was foolish for even trying. Years later when I began contemplating the marathon, this community helped me out in countless ways ranging from just being encouraging in general to specifics such as helping me understand how a plan would work or reaching out to me when I got very discouraged during training. At one of the darkest moments during training, I knew that I could come here to share what I was feeling and find people willing to help me work through those fears. While I might have run both of my marathons by myself, during the races I knew that I was not running alone as so many here were cheering for me both in Disney World and elsewhere.

This year it was wonderful to meet so many of you at DATW and feel welcomed in the group. One area that I think this community excels at is being able to celebrate each other's accomplishments. It feels like the distance and/or time matters only to the individual runner. The fastest, most accomplished, and best runners among us are nothing but encouraging to the slower runners just hoping to finish their first 5K. And after the races be they in Disney World or elsewhere are finished, we enjoy celebrating what each other accomplished.

Good morning, runDisney all-stars!

For this week's Sundays are for Disney, what is your all time favorite Disney race? Or top 3? Or top 5? Who cares! Use whatever criteria you want - individual performance, fun factor, medal, etc. If you haven't run a Disney race yet, what's your favorite race experience from any race you've run?

3. Disney Marathon 2017 - my first marathon and first Disney race. The race that got me hooked on runDisney and running marathons. I ran it solo and I dealt with knee pain half the race, but it was so magical and so fun.
2. (Tie) Disney Marathon 2019/Marathon Weekend 10K 2020 - The marathon was my completion of my first (and only, but not last) Dopey and I loved that sense of accomplishment. Much better weather than 2017, as well. 10K was the Rogue Two adventure with @FFigawi. So much fun.
1. Disney Marathon 2020 - Goof Troop! Need I say more?

Have a safe and healthy week, everyone!

5. Disneyland Half 2010, dressing up as the Fairy Godfather
4. Disney Marathon 2018, first one to Thirsty River
3. Disney on Ice 2010
2. Rogue Two, one of the most epic stunts I’ve ever pulled, and couldn’t/wouldn’t have done it without @lhermiston
1. Disney Marathon 2020, the Goof Troop Roving Road Party (TM)

3) 2010 Princess Half—my first half and was shocked that I could do it! Also special because both my daughters ran it, too.

2) 2020 WDW Half—my 14th half, ten years after my first and shocked that I’m still running! Also, had a lovely time at the HH meet up!

1) 2012 DL Half— solo trip, earned my Coast-to-Coast medal, stayed at Disneyland Hotel.

2008 Minnie 15k....my first real distance race and first at Disney.
2010 Marathon.......my first--never in my life up to then would I have believed I could run a marathon.
2018 Dopey......Qualified for Boston at the marathon and made it through 4 races with minimal post-race physical aches/pains.
2020 Marathon.....Goof Troop Roving Road Party (TM)....first time I have ever had a jello shot, or consumed alcohol during a race.

ETA: 2014 Princess 10k....took 3rd in my age group in a hot race (paid for it the next day in the half)

1. 2020 WDW Marathon (really the whole weekend) - Goof Troop and having a blast with friends.
2. 2019 WDW Marathon - first in line for Everest, finished with a Margarita, my first DATW.
3. 2018 WDW Marathon - this weekend had my favorite set of medals ever. My first full dopey after 2017 and the canceled half.
4. 2019 Wine and Dine - just a ton of fun all around. I don’t remember most of the after party...
5. 2015 WDW 10K - the race that started it all for me. I’ve been running ever since.

1) 2016 WDW Marathon - My first running event. It was going to be a one time bucket list event but it ended up being too much fun to stop. Loved getting to run through the baseball stadium and getting to run more in DHS.
2) 2016 Disneyland 10k/Half - When I found out about the Coast to Coast challenge, that ended my thoughts of the marathon being a one-and-done. So I was going to do the half and then saw the course for the 10k, which is still my favorite Run Disney course. I'm really glad I got to do this before they stopped the DL races.
3) 2020 Dopey - Never in a million years did I think I'd be able to finish Dopey, but meeting everyone at the 2019 marathon and seeing how much fun they were having, I decided to give it a try. Definitely worth it. The overall weekend this year was the most fun I've had.
4) 1995 Disneyland 5k - I'd never done any running event, but found out about Disneyland's first 5k and marathon and getting to run through the park was something I had to do. It was totally different setup than it is now, no character photo stops, no medals for the 5k, but having the finish line on Main Street was awesome.
