Parents of HS class of 2020

Because I know you all will understand, we just got the call that the prom has officially been cancelled. It was scheduled for May 2, then rescheduled to June 27 and now cancelled. I'm more upset than my daughter right now.
It hurts me that she is now taking all these disappointments instride. She just expects everything to not happen. The day before the stay at home orders came out in Ohio she picked up her altered prom dress. Two weeks before that we got her Senior solo dance tutu.

I just feel so terrible that our kids have lost all the rites of passage that are senior year. I understand the why, I just feel so sad for them and us as parents.

Our hs is doing a unique graduation where your family group can come to the school at a scheduled time and "cross the stage". It will all be edited together to make one video released at their previous grad day and time on youtube. It's something..

I hear you. It is so sad and I am sorry your school isn't having a prom. I wish it were different for everyone.

Our HS canceled prom as well and announced that they are extending our school year by 5 days this year which honesty, feels like a lot at this point. This whole year has been mostly the tedious and none of the fun. Last night was supposed to be opening night for DD's spring musical. Her group of friends were all chatting together, lots were crying. It is a harsh reality and very little fun for the last year together. I keep hoping for a silver lining and that we can at least have a group get together prior to college. I want so badly for these kids to get closure for their final year in HS. Fingers crossed things improve by August so we all can do that. Thinking of everyone and your kids. Virtual hugs to all of you.

Well, we finally got the official announcement we knew was coming-that NYC public schools will be online for the rest of the school year. My son's school is small for public school (100 kids per grade) and the principal is trying to figure out something for the graduating class. Meanwhile, my 12th grader is turning 18 in two weeks. Where has the time gone😥

Yesterday our State School of Superintendents made the announcement that there could be no graduation ceremonies of any kind in the state. She went on to mention some of the ideas that had been floating around - doing multiple smaller graduations and piecing together, outdoor with very few family members per graduate, etc - and said none of them could take place.

Well, apparently, that didn't go over too well because it was announced that this afternoon she is going to make a revised announcement, so hopefully she is back-peddling some. Time will tell.

What state?

There is no reason why they can't do virtual graduations at least.

I’m sorry for all of the seniors and their parents having to miss this. I hope they know they are special and deserve the attention and celebration as much as anyone!

Virtual graduation in mid June. In person one tentatively scheduled for late July with a prom the following night...if it's allowed. I'm not even sure my kid will care by then. She would rather have had her two senior field trips, school play and track season back instead of those events. LOL. Right now, she is just hating the online. She has all AP classes and says most of her teachers are giving far more work than they ever did in class.

I agree - we're in Illinois. I think she's making another statement today, but I haven't seen anything or researched it yet.

Yeah, I think DD is similar. "Give me my Grad Bash trip and Prom and let me put this mess behind me and go to college!"

Our school board is trying to make virtual graduation nice, but the students just want to be done.

I totally get it - our official prom announcement came today as well. We have a “closet of crushed dreams” in our spare bedroom ... DD18’s prom dress, the fancy clothes my girls were going to wear on our spring break cruise and DD16’s dance costumes.

DD18 is the same as your DD - she just expects it all to get cancelled. I guess it’s good that they are coping. I feel so bad for all of these seniors. It all just stinks. No other way around it ...

Tomorrow was supposed to be graduation day. I have decorations so I think I will decorate her door. Grad ceremony rescheduled for August 7, with senior breakfast, and project grad that night. She picked up her yearbook, cap/gown, announcements (which now have wrong date) yesterday. School organized a drive through at the school with different "stations" to turn in/pick up things. She's also going to be recognized for Outstanding Art student of the year too-after she decided her major wasn't going to be graphic design lol. We were supposed to be leaving for France next week too...but we are all looking forward to this summer and next year.

Doesn't surprise me that colleges are seeing space. I think a lot of families are rethinking on campus for this fall. OTOH-I have heard of some kids getting accepted into their "reach" schools too-so for some it represents an opportunity they may not have had-perhaps a small silver lining :)

Yes, that's the bright side of things. I've seen some surprising acceptances just among DD's friend group. Some schools have good programs to support marginal applicants, so hopefully they'll do fine.

Just like yours, my daughter just expects things to get cancelled. :guilty:Her prom gown hangs in the bag on her closet door. We’re in NY-Long Island, so a hot spot. We just got the official word on Friday that we’re on virtual learning for the rest of the year. Our last day isn’t until June 25th. Prom, the 26th. Graduation, the 27th. They haven’t said what, if any plans are being made for either just yet. All three of mine have been saying that they’re getting more work now than when they were in school. It’s difficult all around. All work, none of the fun, social activities and, as someone stated earlier, any closure on their HS careers.
We did get some good news though. On Saturday, we had my daughter’s virtual college orientation. It ran very smoothly and it was announced that they are planning on opening campus and the dorms for the fall. The president of the college reiterated that in an email today. I really hope they find that they’re able to do that. These poor kids need SOMETHING to look forward to!

Oh I hope the district is able to postpone vs outright cancel. Our district is doing that-still a chance may get cancelled but at least they want to try. Today was supposed to be graduation. I decorated DD's door before she got up, trying not to cry at what she is missing. She will (hopefully) still get her ceremony in August, but it is not quite the same-being out of school all week as seniors, the senior breakfast etc. And the excitement of graduation and the after party with friends, with the whole summer to look forward to and planning for college. She is definitely taking it better than me!!

Yes it is a SMALL thing in what is happening across the globe today, but it still is something that was taken-I think it is ok for our kids (and parents) to be able to be sad and grieve over these things too.

Yes good news! I do think most schools will be open this fall one way or another.

That's great news! Where is she going to college?

We're going to find out in June, supposedly. I made hotel reservations for move-in weekend and also for Family Weekend, so I hope it works out.

Marietta College, Marietta, OH
I’m hoping Ohio’s quick response to shut things down back when all this started helps to keep their numbers under better control.

Well we got some good news last night and some answers to graduation/ prom. I am pleased with the arrangements. I can tell the school is working really hard to make something happen for these kids and I am so proud of them for that. Graduation will be virtual, but they are doing their best to make it as awesome as they can. Speeches will still happen and be pre-recorded one on one. (DD is salutatorian which is exciting). They have apt sign ups and each student will go one on on to have their photo taken in their cap and gown. They will also have a photo in front of a green screen which will then allow them to make up the class photo that is usually taken every year and hung up at the school. There will be a another sign up for each student to receive their diploma one on one where they will video it and announce their name. Then everything will be compiled into a "graduation ceremony" that will be live-streamed/ put on local tv and also streamed at our drive in. So lots of options for people to join in and see it. They are also building a time capsule that will go under the new bell tower and dedicate it to the entire class which is a nice touch. Sadly the yearbooks are delayed due to Covid, so those will come at a later date. Prom isn't happening but they announced that next year's home coming game and dance will be honoring the class of 2020. They will do something at the football game and if students can come back home that weekend they are invited to the dance free of charge. Anyway, I think in all there are some really sweet touches to this. They are heartfelt and I think it meant a lot to the kids to see how they were really trying to make everything come together and give them a celebration. I am certainly more at peace with it. I hope everyone else gets good news regarding their end of the year!
