The Mayor Of Vegas

Especially if she wasn’t specific about which virus . . .:rolleyes1

I think a lot of people have lost sight of the fact that the closures were never intended to last until there was zero virus threat. The closures were to keep the hospitals from becoming overwhelmed with patients. They have accomplished that goal. It is necessary to at least partially reopen society, both from an economic standpoint and from a herd immunity standpoint. Those of us who have done as asked and isolated ourselves have also (probably) not been exposed to Covid-19 to get any immunity. Will that mean another batch of cases? Yes, in all likelihood it will. The idea is to open a little at a time so the new cases, again, don’t overwhelm the hospitals. That is the only way to get the herd immunity up where it needs to be to stop the rapid spread. Keeping everyone at home at this point may be doing us more harm than good in the long term. If anyone feels they are particularly susceptible to the virus and wants to continue to isolate, they are certainly allowed, and encouraged, to do so. But I know I am ready to get back into the routine of going to work every day, and will be glad when I can do so, even if it means wearing a mask. My job does not involve dealing with the general public. It’s just an office job in an office building, where I am in a room with one other person, and our desks are the perfect six feet apart. So, I am in agreement with the people who want to start opening things back up so long as it’s not everything at one time.

I agree that we ought to slowly reopen—in some places.

Without more testing capability in place, even partial reopening of areas with a relatively high rate of new cases will be welcoming a second wave much quicker than what we just experienced.

Yes, flattening the curve was to lessen the peak, not to get rid of the virus. People from both sides of the debate keep falsely accusing the other side with exaggerated claims, though. I can guarantee you no one was saying what you think when you said, “I think a lot of people have lost sight of the fact that the closures were never intended to last until there was zero virus threat.”

Remember, we theoretically started at with n=0 at t=0. Reopening now would be starting with n>>0 and R0>1.

I heard her on that interview while in my car. I couldn't wait to get home and view the interview. It almost sounded like a comedy program. She is one heck of a nut. Thankfully, the governor, interviewed by Anderson this evening, displayed a level of intelligence that made sense.

It's a good thing the Governor of NV seems to have his head on his shoulders. He says he's not opening the strip. And the state mandates overrule city laws & rules.

(EDITED for a better interview:)

The only place on the strip in Las Vegas is the Stratosphere. The rest is governed by the Clark County Commission. Las Vegas has made several attempts at getting the Strip, but has failed every time.

Yeah - that's what I was wondering. She mentions "The Strip" because that's what people understand. However, what they have there is a statewide order which is affecting a sizable number of casinos in downtown Las Vegas. Also - the city itself has businesses that rely on the operation of the county government, which is pretty much closed.

All the casino owners on The Strip would fight tooth and nail against any attempt to annex by the city of Las Vegas. They get many of the same municipal services (especially the metro police department) although they rely on the county fire department.

Golden Girls, Betty White
The difference is we laugh with Betty White. We laugh at the Mayor.

Nobody has lost sight of that. And nobody says we have to be down to zero threat. But what we do need is a clear two week trend that shows us this is on the decline. We don't have it yet. And in a tourist place like Las Vegas, it isn't just Nevada numbers that we need. It's numbers all over the place. We clearly aren't there yet. Despite daily new cases going down just a tick, they've since hit a plateau rather than coming down some more. Active cases are still going up, not down. And our death count today is once again over 2,000. The virus doesn't care whether it came from a new case or a 5 day old case or a 10 day old case. It will infect us just the same. As such, We're actually more vulnerable right now than we were two weeks ago numbers wise. Social distancing has flattened the curve. But it also means the downside is not going to be as steep or as quick as the front side was. Sure. There is a time to start opening things back up. That time is not now. It certainly is not the time to open the Casinos back up. only to have people come in from all over and have people take it back to all over. The medical professionals understand this and have stated such. I think I'll go with what they say on the matter.
