Realistically, what are the chances of being able to ride with a backup BG? Has anyone ever gotten on that way?
So we are going to try for a BG tomorrow for 2 people. We don't have a car so dependant on resort transport from SSR which they say starts an hour before park open. We will be at bus stop by 5:55 and hope for the best. To Make matters worse I have a crappy phone; well not horrible but not the best. I can make FP's in a park in reasonable time. I plan to find and stand by a CM so I can get help quickly if needed. Does this even sound like we'll have any chance at all? We aren't hoping for any particular time, would be happy just to get a BG and come back later that night if need be.

We are trying for a BG next Wednesday. All three of us have an MDE account and share plans. Should we all log into one account that morning, or is it fine to try from our own accounts? We aren’t planning on Getting in line for anything that morning; is there a good place to hang out and wait for park open that won’t be jam backed with people heading to GE or TSL?
We weren't planning to ride anything else so we just hung around the turnstile area, just inside the park.

If you are in the park prior to opening, you will not get a backup group, you'll get a main one. Well, provided the app doesn't crap out or something odd.
Bus transport will begin more than an hour before the park opens too. Still, 6:00 is plenty of time

Based on the recent data, I think you have a great chance of getting a BG tomorrow. Good luck!

As for back up BGs, yes lots of people have gotten on that way.

Once your boarding group is called, is it typical that you still have to wait in line for 90 mins like they reported today?

Not normally during the day. End of the night and when operations resume after a break down have the longest wait times. When it comes back up people who were issued a fp tend to flood back in.

Are the lines at GET CM’s still really long every day right away, such that unless you are the first 1-2 guests in their line, they won’t even get to you before the BGs are all gone? If the BGs are all gone by the time you reach the front of the GET line, do you get a back up group, since that is what they are now distributing, or do you get a real BG because you were clearly there in line for the CM during distribution of regular BGs but had a tech issue?

Is it fair to say that, based on the past few weeks, if you enter the Hollywood Studios parking lot by about 6:30am, you should have enough time to get through security, wait on line for the park gates, have your park tickets scanned, and then be inside the park for an official 7am opening when boarding groups are opened?

Conversely, if you're entering the park at 6:45-6:55, I'm guessing you're looking at 60+ min waits for most of the headliner attractions by the time the park actually opens? You probably need to arrive before 6am in order to be towards the front of the lines for rides like Millenium Falcon, Slinky, etc?

Just trying to balance sleep with line avoidance.
We are trying this tomorrow. I’ll let you know!

Via “The Chart” it’s pretty easy to see exactly how many BGs have been called back each day. Hint: a decent amount!

I read your warning which is why we didn't hurry over there. But I never expected the line to look the way it did back when we were there for opening day in December. I've been following this thread since the beginning and I can't remember anyone reporting such a long line in the last two hours of the day.

I'm glad that someone else saw that line, too. It was very disappointing. But we will get back there again later.
Yeah - It’s a tough situation at the end of the night. The ride doesn’t suddenly start moving 70% more people but yet they start calling that many more BGs just to fill a line. It’s possible tonight was worse than normal but it seems like a regular occurrence based on what we see each night in the data.

Thank you all. I’m guessing it will all be a moot point anyway.
It sounds complicated due to all the details shared here, but it's not really.
It can be as simple as-
  • Each person who'd like to join a BG must be inside HS before 'official' park open.
  • At 'official' open time, the BGs will become available to join thru MDE.
  • Depending what number BG you're assigned, MDE will give you an estimate of return time (morning, afternoon, etc). Once called, you have 2 hours to make it over to the RoR ride.
That's all it takes to be successful :) A few other notes:
Regular BGs usually last around 10-15 minutes (plenty of time to join a BG in the app), but some crowded days have gone in a minute or two. Back-up BGs have lasted around 2 hours recently but can go in under 30 minutes (and I'd expect that during MLK weekend).
To get the same BG number and ride together with other members in your party, make sure you're all linked in MDE and join as a group (just like with FP).

Up to 66 now and they are back on track. It unfortunately might be a tough day to hold a backup BG though (not sure how many of those they'll get through) - time will tell!
This comment didn’t age well today 🤣 And I’m glad for that!! Lots of folks got a chance to ride today 😊 (although I guess it was a tough day for 40 or so BGs that faces long waits)

Question...what if walk over from Beach Club and get in line early. Would it be acceptable for DH and DD to come a little later and join me in line? Would that be allowed? Would people in line behind be mad?

Why do they need to join you in line? OR, said differently Why are you coming separately?

There’s really no need to arrive at the park separately as long as you’re all inside prior to posted opening.

We are back from race weekend and our successful attempt at RotR. I've followed this thread from day one, and just wanted to say to all the regulars and old-timers (LOL!) that you guys have been great, and I've really loved the thread. Sad that it is time to step away, but I'm switching over to the other coast for our next attempt at RotR at Disneyland 1/24-1/26. Bright suns to you all and thanks again for all the help and fun sharing of info.

People will be mad. People are tired, grumpy, and antsy waiting to get their BG.

Personally, one or two people joining their party when it makes no difference (for RotR, not the rest of the park) when someone enters the gates wouldn't bug me.

So, the 90-120 minute wait times at the end of the night end up only effecting back up BG group holders, at this point anyways, right? They're doing it too late to really impact regular BG holders? I think I'm okay with them calling a mass of them at the end of the night if that's the case. Do you wanna get up early and spend your 90-120 minutes getting your butt to the park before dawn, or you wanna spend that time in a line in the evening?

I think it's funny we've had so many people talk about how they wish Disney would let it be a free for all stand by line, meanwhile DFB thinks it's news worthy when it gets a 90 minute wait :rotfl2:

Not necessary. There's a good chance you're inside HS by the time they came over anyway. And it won't make much difference if the goal is that you're all inside HS before official open.

If you're also trying to secure a spot to rope drop a ride, I definitely wouldn't recommend. There's a good chance other guests block them from getting all the way to your spot. It's very awkward having to 'excuse' yourself past 200+ people, especially before coffee lol.
