The Running Thread - 2019

Race report: Brazen Almost New Years Eve 10k.

I went into this knowing I was undertrained and not going to do well. I completely met expectations.

This was, notably, the first (and likely only) time we had the whole family out for a race. My wife (@AnotherCrazyMom) and daughter were also doing the 10k, my sons were doing the 5k, with my older son planning to just walk it.

The New Years Eve races are at Quarry Lakes in Fremont, about half an hour from our house, It's a very flat and scenic course, and Brazen uses it three times a year: NYE 5k/10k/half, the 'Quarry Turkey' 5k/10k/half on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the Western Pacific Marathon in April, their only full marathon and a Boston qualifier. (They also do 5k/10k/half with Western Pacific.) We've run here several times before, and know the course fairly well.

As stated, I'm undertrained and overweight (more so than usual) at the moment, and I knew this wasn't going to go well. But, time to go.

I set the watch to 2m/30s intervals, and ran through the first walk interval. First mile went well, coming in at 11:59. I knew I wasn't making a 1:15 proof of time, and decided to just see what I can do.

A little after a mile, my daughter caught up to me and said, "There's a guy here that's creeping me out, so I'm running with you for a while." So, we went along together for almost the entire remainder of the course.

My heart rate was spiking way up, peaking in the 190s, so I backed off on the speed, getting miles 2 and 3 in 13:21 and 14:56, respectively. We waved to my wife, who'd started at the back of the pack, just after we hit the turnaround at mile 3.5; she was probably a minute or two behind us. We didn't see the guy who'd been creeping my daughter out at any point here; we're unsure what happened.

We kept going, skipping the occasional run interval to let my heart rate recover. The remaining miles came in at 13:40, 14:40, and 15:21.

At about mile 6, my daughter decided that she wanted to push to the finish line, while I slowed down a bit. I looked back and saw that my wife was coming up behind me, so I stayed back until she caught up and we ran the last tenth or so together. I made the last corner a bit sharper than her, giving me a bit of a lead. She said, "Oh no you don't!" and sped up to catch up with me, and we crossed the finish line together. (Since she started later, this means she had a faster time.)

Sons had already finished the 5k, which started 15 minutes after the 10k. We met up for them over by the snacks. (One really nice thing about Brazen - they do a really good job on the snacks.) Older son has decided that this was okay but not really for him. Younger son just doesn't like getting up early. (Early, in this case, meant 'we need to be ready to leave the house by 8am.')

Overall time: 1:28:21, pace 14:15. Not a great time but better than I'd feared. Average heart rate 170, peak 196. (I think the Garmin may have been reading a bit high, but not more than a bit.)

We have the second half of this race pair, the New Years Day race on Wednesday. All of us but younger son are doing the 5k; younger son is just sleeping in. (The 10k course is evil and the half marathon course is worse; I'll talk more in the race report for that race.)

Well I finally found the link, and of course work has is blocked so I will have to try it from my phone. I agree with everything everyone else has said, HUGE thanks to @LSUlakes for keeping this thread alive (and hopefully bringing a national championship back to the SEC) and thanks to @OldSlowGoofyGuy for getting the 2020 race list started!

I hope you all had a great Christmas/holiday season!

Love the google doc list! We will have it linked to the first post for the Running Thread 2020 for easy access?
We need @rteetz 's help to figure out the best place to include the link. The only security is that you have to have the link to view/edit. I may be overly cautious (30+ years in IT), but I didn't want to publish the link in a forum/thread since anyone can access it without being logged in to DIS Boards. I put it in my profile so that only logged in users can see it (similar to putting a piece of tape over your keyhole to ward off burglars).

Thoughts?

That’s an interesting question. Can you add a password or something to the google doc? I’m not a huge fan of google doc stuff but it’s really our best option here.

Id have to look myself but can non-logged in users open a spoiler tag? We could put it in that.

Yes, a non logged in user is able to open spoiler tags. Just tried it with DopeyBadger posts on pg 293 of the Matathon Weekend thread.

Well we may just have to deal with it. If non DIS people some how make it on there we can clean that up. Since we all have access anyone can do that clean up. Unless someone else has a better option.

Not sure, but it boils down to the same problem: how to distribute it to the appropriate people.

Maybe we post the link and see if any trouble makers show up. If they do, we come up with plan B that's more secure. Maybe even manage it by email address, which is the most secure but the most work.

Do you have a SWAG on how many active users we have on the running forum?

December 2019 totals
Distance: 164.6 km (102 mi)
Average pace: 6m26s/km (10m22s/mi)

What a great December we had running wise: Temperatures hovering around freezing and almost no accumulation on the ground... Until today storm. DH is sick so after a chicken rice soup, I let him fall asleep and went for a run. The snow was finally flaky as opposed to sleet, the streets were quiet, there was enough snow for my spikes to grab and the visibility was good. I ended up running over 10 miles. What a great way to end 2019.

2019 totals distance: 1505 km (935mi)

2019 highlights and lessons learned:
  • Being my own coach is ok as long as I have big objectives (Dopey) and the support of other runners (thank you DISers, colleagues and friends),
  • Coaching DD is great for our relationship but is both demanding and rewarding,
  • Trying to change my stride can be disastrous,
  • Having an amazing physiotherapist and a good massage therapist are key,
  • Stretching is essential,
  • My stomach can handle pretty much anything before and during a race,
  • The first two kilometres are always the toughest,
  • I still like race bling and want more,
  • I am a Marathoner.

Just finished my last run of 2019 and pretty pleased.

Ended the year at 1400 miles which is up from 728 in 2018 so a really nice jump
Total activities were 275 so basically like 5 a week
Average pace was 9:21 which included marathon training so a little slower than last year but a needed step back with the long runs.

After Chicago, I have felt much more comfortable with an increase in speed and looking to hopefully improve with that in 2020.

For December. I ended at

120 Miles
Avg pace 8:54
26 Activities

Now to set some 2020 goals.

its been a while but before I signed up I couldn’t see attachments as a guest. Not sure if that’s changed but it may be a simple solution

I finally got around to putting all my run data for the year into an Excel file. I usually use the standard Apple app which is convenient to use, but doesn't do much with the data besides giving individual run data (splits, heart rate, route, etc) and monthly running summaries...

December running totals
Running: 100.34 km or 62.35 miles
Average run distance: 6.68km or 4.15 miles
Average pace: 6:43 min/km, and if I've converted it correctly this is 10:45 min/mile

I'm just glad I still managed to run in December, since it was a very wet December here and I hate running outdoors when it's wet! So ended up at the gym on a treadmill for quite a few runs... which meant my average pace was a bit quicker than if I'd been running outdoors...

2019 running totals
Number of runs: 243
Total run distance: 1308 km or 817 miles
Average run distance: 5.4 km or 3.4 miles
Average pace: 6:53/km or 11:00/mile

All in all, a pretty great year for running for me. I started off the year with my usual new year's resolution of wanting to run 365 km in the year (or an average of 1 km a day). Sometime in February I decided I wanted to lose weight and stepped things up a bit with the running, and around March it became obvious that I'd hit the 365 km target by April. At that point I revised my target to 25 km/week (or 1300 km/year) and just hit that so I'm pretty pleased about this.

I lost some 30+ pounds of weight over the first few months of the year and maintained it, thanks to running! I also got a bit faster at running (went from over 7:00/km to under 7:00/km), had lower running heart rates, and increased my running cadence.

Oh and also PRed both my 10k (under 1:10) and half (under 2:40) at Wine and Dine! A large part of this was due to the weather for these races being absolutely perfect for running, and I'm not quite sure I can match this at my local races which will all be in hot and humid weather...

Going into 2020... I'd like to get a bit faster, and also want to see if I can potentially build up to a marathon. The next major marathon here is in May. However I also anticipate work getting busier so I might need to cut down a bit on running... I'm half thinking of just signing up for the marathon, and the worst that happens is I will just run as much as I can and walk/run the rest? The cut-off time for this marathon is 8 hours so this is actually a possibility...

December miles: 119.8
Average pace: 10’17” /mile

2019 miles: 888.5
I never really set a goal for miles, just sort of ran a few times a week and trained for runDisney events. After seeing improvements and the fact that I enjoy something I never thought I would, I have to set a 1000 mile goal for next year and see where it goes from there.

Happy New Year everyone! 🎉🥂

December miles: 57.53
2019 miles: 413.60

Positives:
*Made my revised goal of 400 miles for the year.
*Completed a 12k. The 7.1 miles that day, at a 14:52 avg pace, is one more step towards feeling like I can get back to where I was before June 17th.
*Released from PT earlier in the month since they don't see additional PT being helpful.

Anyone have a good T+D calculator they use? Do you calculate based on the data at the beginning of your workout or at the end? I think this is something I have to start tracking given that I'm outside more now.
