So Happy Cards work at HD for other GCs? How about at Bed Bath and Beyond?
Yes, you can use Happy cards at HD for other GCs. I haven't tried at BBB, but it's definitely more YMMV. The Happy Cards changed a few months ago to now include language excluding giftcards but it isn't hard coded. The cashiers at BBB just may not allow it, and they've been known to do that.
Yay that's awesome! What message did he have? I called tonight again and it's still the same weird message. I really think it didn't go through. I was going to reapply on a different browser in case it was a browser issue but received an email from Credit Karma that my new house mtg posted to my CB. Unfortunately my rating dropped from 750 to 681  so I guess I will not be reapplying. I'm telling myself there is always another good deal down the road but myself is still so ticked. I am happy for all you new SW card owners though!
He just had a normal 2 week message. Sorry for all the trouble you are having. I'd probably just give them a call to see what's going on.

My dilemma for the evening - would you sign up for 5k AA points with a 1k MSR?

I've got a coin flip going for a Citi biz 70k/4k in 4 months vs 75k/5k in 5 months. Really as far as I can see between the two offers is just that extra 5k points but with an extra 1k in spend needed. The spend is doable because of the time frame, but can't decide if it's really worth it for "just" 5k points. (Or I could be missing something - please, let me know :) )

As a change of pace, I'm kinda sitting here with no real plan. Our future trips are kinda up in the air so no specific goal and no rush. Just waiting for can't miss offers to pop up that align with the roadmap. I don't think putting that extra 1k into the MSR will derail anything, but still not sure if it's worth it.

Part of it might be getting 60k AA for a single purchase :cloud9: Most other offers are going to pale in comparison to that
I think the other part is seeing things like the Hilton no-AF card getting 100k for that same 1k MSR (which I'm still hoping comes back around). That's about $400-500 based on some potential redemptions I'm looking at. Picking up a CF and a CFU would also be 1k in MSR's and get at least $350 depending on the timing of offers. I know it all depends on the right redemption, but I'm not sure I can get 5k AA miles to value out at more than $300. Not with the few random 5k web specials I looked at which are looking like half that.

Thoughts?

So you'd actually get 6k AA miles for spending that additional $1k (since you'd get the base miles too). Simple example...let's say you value AA miles at 1cpp. That's worth $60. You could spend $25 on Plastiq to MS that last $1,000 with a HELOC or mortgage payment if you have either of those. Would you buy $60 in AA miles for $25? You'd obviously have to fill in your own math though if my assumptions are wrong...

Have you considered the offers with a statement credit? That has a much lower MSR and you get the $200 or $250 stmt credit depending on which offer they are running - an AA gift card uses the stmt credit easily - and you still get a bunch of AA miles - 40k I believe.

EDIT: I also like the idea of the higher MSR sometimes because that just helps slow my pacing down if I'm running through MSRs too quickly.

Welcome! Here are a few thoughts. The more you can narrow down your goals, the easier it would be to point you in the right direction. I also understand that that is not always possible.

There are lots of options to get to Paris. We've flown to/through CDG twice in the last year and already have tickets for summer 2020. All on Air France because that's just what worked for us. Both AMEX MRs and Chase URs can be moved to Air France. I know MRs also can be transferred to Delta (not sure about URs but I think someone else here will know). Personally, I prefer to get those MRs and URs for flights so I'm not tied down to a specific airline since they seem to constantly be changing what is required to book a flight.

If you want to start with Chase (as many people here do) I'd look at the CIP if you are ok with Business cards. 80k points as a sign up bonus. Then there's the CSR which will get you Global Entry for free to speed you through customs and can give you Priority Pass lounge access.

With AMEX there are Delta cards (I don't have any but people here do, so I'll let them advise you on those) plus things like the Platinum which can (if you are lucky) come with a 100K point SUB. That one also comes with a large AF, but also Global Entry, Priority Pass lounge access, and Centurion lounge access (there is a really nice one at DFW).

Are you looking for economy or business class seats?

If you're thinking 2021 then I would recommend having enough points in place a year in advance so you can grab those airline tickets as soon as they become available. You can also use points (hotel points, Chase points, AMEX points) for hotel rooms. We just booked the Hyatt in Paris using points.

Also don't leave Orly out as an option for your airport. We flew into CDG and out of Orly due to flight times. The cost was similar but Orly is closer to the Hyatt Vendome we were staying at the CDG was which also swayed us into leaving from there. Smaller airport and it was easy to do. The only bummer was the way CDG is set up I didn't really see any of the airport since they basically corralled us from the plane to the exit. It was nice because I didn't have to get through all the people waiting to board but I'd wanted to at least walk through the airport. I flew Iceland Air but my BFF was on AF that connected at JFK to a DL flight back to Dulles.

Congrats @Haley R! I called it quietly to myself and have been waiting for the announcement. Love your announcement photo.

Congrats! 🎉🤱🏼 I think quite a few of us were suspicious. My rule is never ever ask a woman if she’s pregnant until she tells you.
Great rule to have, coming from someone who once asked "when's the baby due?" while juggling 4 kids in Houston heat at a soccer tournament and there is/was no way another is joining this family. Never wore that dress again! Happy to say I have finally lost all that weight as well.

That's a good point. I've been there years ago, but forget about Orly since the good direct (points bookable) flights from here go to CDG. I do not enjoy spending lots of time in CDG, but it just works really well as a positioning airport for us since I have issues paying the taxes and fees they charge at LHR.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I don't have a problem with going too quickly :teeth:

I have considered the statement credit offers but I don't have plans for actually flying AA so I'm kinda looking at just growing the alternate points stash. Unfortunately SW doesn't fly everywhere and hubby is thinking the next "big" trip he's interested in would probably be overseas again. I could get a GC with the statement credit but then I hold onto it until we're looking as a cash flight who-knows-when and it wouldn't help if I'm short on points for a redemption (I don't think you can buy points with it, correct?) I guess I could sell it but I'm always leery of stuff like that. I don't always have great luck and knowing that I expect issues and wouldn't count that cash as a sure thing. Then I'd essentially just get 40k miles for the same work. (If that even makes sense)

That's kinda why I was interested in the highest points offer at 75k but when I really looked at it realized it was only a 5k difference for that extra spend. And since it's an all or nothing offer and not a stepped one, I'd be committed to all of it. I'm not opposed to doing it since the goal is just a boatload of points, just stopped to think for too long before firing up the application I guess :p

ETA: And I realize AA is not always the greatest points for international redemptions, it is the most flexible for us domestically too as an alternate to SW.

@calypso726 I can't remember how many days you guys were doing at TDLR but how are you doing/what are you doing with thr typhoon that's coming?

When I saw the typhoon was coming I was able to change our Sunday flight to Saturday. I was still trying to find flights out on Friday using miles with no success.

Then, my Saturday flight and all other flights on ANA or JAL were cancelled for the weekend. I read that over 1600 flights were cancelled. Once that happened, combined with the news reporting about a super typhoon that would be as strong as the one that killed 1200 people back in 1958 coming directly for us, I figured I shouldn’t have a problem with the trip insurance we purchased for the ABD covering an escape plan.

I found same day business class flights for Friday out of Narita (90 minutes away from the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel) with a 5 hour connection in Shanghai. Ww could make it if we left the hotel right away and it would allow a cushion of time to get there early and a buffer for whatever chaos would be happening at the airport. We called China Eastern to book but their ticket office was closed. So we booked it on Expedia. There’s a reason beyond being married to PlanePrincess that I chose business class seats and I will get to that in a bit. Also trip insurance helped with that decision too.

The airport bus transportation wasn’t due to arrive for another 40 minutes so we opted to take a cab. The cab was spacious and immaculate and the seats had what could best be described as fancy white doilies covering them. It was rather charming. I chalked it up to the universe providing me with much needed amusement during a rather stressful morning.

Our flight was for 1:50 pm and the check in counter for that flight was not going to open until 11 am. We made it there little after 10:30 am. I wanted to get there early because I wasn’t sure if we even really had tickets since we booked on Expedia. We only had a confirmation number nothing else. I didn’t know if the flight might be oversold due to all the cancellations. I also knew the airport might be in chaos.

The economy line for check in was already 50 deep. The business class line only had 2 people ahead of us. Since I don’t speak the language I am not sure what was happening while the agent was trying to get us boarding passes. It took forever. The agents on either side of us had a number of people check in get boarding passes and leave while we waited on pins and needles for our gate agent to issue boarding passes. Our agent not only made a phone call but she also had two different people come over to help. I was sweating bullets thinking our Expedia confirmation was not going to fly, no pun intended, and we wouldn’t get boarding passes or on the flight. After what seemed an eternity she was able to get them to issue and print.

We made our way to the lounge and eventually our flight to Shanghai. Thank goodness we had a 5 layover. Our flight sat on the tarmac for over an hour before being able to take off. I knew the airport would be a mess.

Once we arrived in Shanghai I called the MiraCosta and Disneyland hotel to cancel our next two nights. They said they’d refund us and then after much misunderstanding back and forth I was informed that my car keys were at the hotel. Sigh.

We were able to fastpass our way through security at PVG in their VIP line thanks to flying in business class. Good thing too because the other lines were super long.

Once we were sitting in the lounge we booked a one night stay at a Fairfield that included breakfast near JFK. We called to let them know we’d be arriving very late and to please add notes to the reservation about that and not give away the room. We also requested a late checkout and after explaining where we were coming from and why, they gave us a 4 pm checkout. Rather nice to say Bonvoy! and not to have been Bonvoyed.

We got to the hotel and I booked our flights back home for Saturday afternoon. So, I am getting back a day early. AA never sent me a flight cancellation notice. I got the alert from TripIt Pro. I had to call AA this evening and inform them that JAL cancelled our flight. They will be redepositing the miles and refunding the taxes and fees.

So under the circumstances I am glad we had trip insurance for our ABD. I am also glad that we had the coverage dates fixed for the entire trip, not just the ABD part of it. It’s definitely something to think about for international travel. I also realized how our penchant for using miles to book the comfy seats also has other perks beyond comfort.

I’ve been waiting since August to share this and finally can!

Congratulations! How exciting! I had zero idea (not that I follow super closely every day) so as far as I'm concerned you're tops at keeping secrets :thumbsup2

Hey, does this mean you get a silver medal in the unofficial DISchurners baby challenge? (Didn't someone else announce a baby arrival fairly recently?)

Holy cats, that sounds intense. Not the way you want to end a vacation but neither is waiting out a typhoon in a county where there's a language barrier. I will definitely be looking at trip insurance for the entire trip when I go back to Europe. Did you have two different ins plans or did the ABD ins bridge the entire trip? My BFF and I are starting to plan a trip now, I hear you on the invisible benefits to business, she's not going to like that but after this I'm calling it mandatory. Glad your made it back home safely.

Having a good shopping weekend here!
Yesterday I went to buy a charger on Amazon and I saw the $30 off $60 amex deal when checking out. I have never gotten any of the amazon deals before. I quickly added two advent calendars I had saved for the kids into the cart. With the deal it was liking getting on for free. Yay!

This morning Ebates has 12% off tons of stores. Stacked new balance with a 10% off Chase offer. Used raise for gap gift card and then bought DD her Minnie Mouse shoes Ive Been holding off on.

Older DD has her 15th bday party this weekend so my CIP MSR is being met pretty quickly this month.

Hello all. Hoping for a little advice. We are planning a trip to France in summer of 2021. I want to earn enough points to travel round trip from Houston to Paris for 2 or possibly 3 people. We would likely fly Delta or Air France.

We have only 2 credit cards currently:
Amex Everyday card--- have had 15 years or so-- not used for much
Chase Southwest Visa- charge between 2500-5k monthly and pay off in full every month

I have never churned cards and haven't applied for a new credit card in well over 10 years. We have excellent credit.

I think the Chase Saphire card would make the most sense. 60k points to start and I would stop charging the monthly bills/expenses to the Southwest Visa. Should we both get this card? Or would it make more sense for one of us to get the Amex Delta Gold that also offers 60k points? Any thoughts?

:welcome:
most of us here start with Chase UR cards since they can be used many ways including transferring to Air France to book flights.

the 60k URs on the CSP are a nice sign up bonus...if you open one and send a support link to your DH after you both meet the MSR...you would have 143k URs

if you are willing to apply for business cards...the Chase Ink Preferred CIP...has a 80k bonus...after you and your DH open one including the support bonus you would have 190k URs

there is a lot of information about this and other tips in our private DISchurners
Reddit group...if you’d like to join please PM @SouthFayetteFan @Lain or @Albort

My wife and I are going in 2021 as well. The AMEX Delta Gold would be a good churn card if you are going to fly Delta or fly on AF purchasing the ticket through Delta. MR and UR both transfer to AF but UR does not transfer to DL. Where is your spend? How much is on groceries and dining? We have found our AMEX Gold card, not the Delta one is doing most of our heavy lifting. We get about 6,000 points per month and have enough for either both of us to fly main cabin or one of us to fly first class on DL. AF is much more expensive.
