Disney Skyliner Accident

Question, when the monorail goes down and people are stuck (I don’t think it’s for as long, and less freaky than dangling there but still), does Disney tend to much in the way of compensation? Automatic compensation especially?

They don’t usually give you anything. We were stuck on the monorail for almost an hour at Poly in March, and all we got offered was to get off the monorail and use the Poly buses or walk to the GF. Nothing else.

For those with “serious bladder issues” or those who are very prone to motion sickness, I wouldn’t ride these or many other forms of public transportation. They can be unpredictable. This is obviously an extreme case with 3 hours, but breakdowns do happen. We got stuck in the London Underground/tube system for almost 2 hours a few years ago. We couldn’t get off, and there was nowhere to go and no bathrooms. I’m not defending Disney at all. I’m simply trying to explain that things do break down. If you need to be able to get on or off any form of transportation for whatever reason, you should take a car. Heck, we were on a bus last year when we saw another bus get into an accident. Apparently, it took over an hour to get those people off the bus and into another one.

I'm really baffled by this incident. I have ridden Doppelmayr gondolas in absolutely horrific weather across the Alps for YEARS across very high and challenging terrain. There are occasional stops, but nothing more than 20 minutes (maybe I'm lucky?) but these systems have proven extremely reliable in some very inhospitable and unforgiving places (200'+ drops across some towers.) Winds over 20 knots at times (I think they shut down at 30+)...

The Disney install should be the EASIEST of engineering challenges for these systems. The pax aren't loading and pulling heavy skis, snowboards, or mountain bikes along with them, either.

I can imagine a couple people I know explaining at gate security that they are bringing a survival kit and a small bio porta potty to WDW because they plan to brave the Gondola.

Meh, it has a floor.
Let’s not continue with posts like these please. This will cause the thread to be closed.

Its true though, weird to condemn that post. Its actuality, people were enclosed in a small space for a long time. This is a forum of adults right? Its not hard to comphrend why the joke which is mild is a valid point.

I agree to some extent but how far do you take this? Should children or seniors not take it? Sounds like Disney needs to consider posting some seriously worded warning signs both where guests board and on flyers in the rooms of the resorts that offer this transportation.

But they are pulling lots of scooters and strollers (with contents). I think that loading and unloading complicates a lot of things.

That was not the only post in question. The topic is not about making jokes about creating poop related shirts because of this incident. This thread is about the skyliner incident that happened last night. Let's keep it that way or like I said this thread will be closed. Its fairly simple.

Topics arent one directional. The conversation including an aspect of what OCCURRED isnt off topic either. Now thats SIMPLE.

That’s what I thought regarding the monorail, thanks.

Using that as a point of reference, I’m honestly pleasantly surprised Disney was automatically compensating and did realize something more valuable than FP was needed. I know for some people the amount was nowhere near enough, but I think it was about what we can reasonably expect out of them.

I'm definitely interested to hear what they determine to have been the root cause - if they release it. I was "iffy" about riding it in the first place as I'm not a big fan of enclosed spaces and this has not helped. In terms of overall impact on the # using the skyliner once it reopens, I'm not sure it will have a big impact. The average guest - even those on property now - is probably completely unaware of this incident.

Most guests will be aware of what happened after asking why the gondolas are no longer moving.

If I am not mistaken, I read that when Riveria opens the ONLY way to get to Epcot is by using the gondolas. I think someone said no buses or VERY LIMITED buses.

Disney really needs to investigate this as thoroughly as possible. As long as it take. People are buying at Riveria just for the use of the gondolas to epcot. They can not afford for this to happen again.

Did they ever do a three hour inside versus outside temperature recording with the gondola stopped in mid-air, on a hot humid summer day?

Now they have seen a near worst case scenario, doing a rescue on the longest line, the Epcot line. Fortunately it was not in the middle of an ultra hot ultra humid day.

Sanitizing the gondolas where needed can be done with large amounts of alcohol and/or ammonia. Is there carpeting inside? Theoretically a soaking with alcohol will sanitize carpeting that got dog doodle or human waste on it although that piece of carpeting might not last as long as carpeting that was not so soaked.

Ok... soooo... this is my wife and I last night...441875

Let me start by saying this was our first time on the gondola. We had tacos and a bottle of Prosecco to celebrate our inaugural ride at the Caribbean Beach quick service. We got on at the skyliner at the Caribbean and were on our way to EPCOT. When we arrived at the Rivera we came to a stop. The system was down for a while... 5 to 10 minutes. While it was down our doors were open and a cast member was doing a Disney trivia game with each car. Then the system came back on line, our doors shut, and we moved forward... the blue car in front of us was NOT moving, so we crushed up into it and the car behind us crushed into us and the car behind that hit them and so on... you could hear the metal into metal scraping and the breaking of the plexiglass vents. The accident didn’t last long... but I remember sitting there and saying to my wife “I don’t think that was supposed to happen...” Security started going around asking if everyone was OK. A maintenance guy came over with a giant pole type tool, like a overgrown hanger pole they use at clothes stores to get up high. He did some jockeying of the blue car in front and we were freed up. The car swung around pretty hard and the noise was pretty harsh. My wife screamed. We noticed our doors were bent and weren’t shut all he way. There was definitely body damage to our car and several others, including broken vents. We were lucky that we were at the Rivera turnstile because our evacuation was swift! I don’t think we realized the extent of the accident until we saw pictures of our car on the news. So that being said the cars are pretty tough. I think it could of been worse, and we’re very lucky it wasn’t. Cast members were very calm and super nice. They offered us transportation, but we decided to walk back to our car.

We are all happy you are ok.
