The Running Thread - 2019

A running friend ran Shamrock and ran with Meb's pace group. He had shared some pictures that were pretty neat on FB. I didn't want to repost without his permission, but Shamrock is now using one of the pictures of them for their marketing. My buddies bib name is "Not Meb".

I did that marathon. Meb was at the expo signing copies of his book. The line was just WAY too long for me to want to wait in it (and I hadn't planned to buy the book, so I would have had to do that, too). It would have been extremely cool to run in his pace group. But at least I saw him at the expo! LOL

14 - avondale - Summer Pocahontas Half Marathon (2:07:00 / 2:43:18)

Thanks!

Pocahontas HM - July 14, 2019

It was very hot and humid, with T+D 142 to start and 156 when I finished. I don't run well in the heat, and today the T+D beat me almost before I got started. You can read my full race report here. Given my probably too ambitious aim for this race, my finish was very disappointing. But at least I did finish it.

The course was in Pocahontas State Park in Virginia, a little south of Richmond. The trail was packed dirt/gravel/sand - not paved, but certainly not what our trail-running friends would consider to be technical. There was a 5K, 10K, and HM. The HM did the 10K out-and-back twice, with an extra bit to get to the HM distance. The course was mostly forested and shady, but absolutely no breeze. I carried my own fluids but there were quite a few aid stations, since you ran by everything multiple times. No mile-markers on the course. There were only 61 runners in the HM and somewhat fewer in the 10K and 5K.

I wouldn't do this race again because it's in the SUMMER, ha ha, and I have learned my lesson. They do host races in the park at cooler times of year. The race organization has a series of races where you can accumulate points by participating, and there is some sort of series for "back of the pack" runners, which sounds like a nicely-inclusive idea. They did support the HM through the last runner at something like 3:40 finish - and in the heat we had, that must have been some effort for her!

I’m just finishing up his book. He seems like a really good guy

With these Prime deals I’m thinking about getting a Garmin. I know Garmin has been talked about here before, but what does everyone have/suggest? Thanks!

I have a Vivoactive 3 and like it. Does more than what I need, but it's a good form factor.

Currently running with a vivoactive3, I have a 235, 220 and vivoactive hr too. I really like the vivoactive3, but the touchscreen bothers some people compared to the real buttons on the 235

congrats @run.minnie.miles !!! Such exciting news :)

FRIDAY ATTQOTD : I listen to the disunplugged podcast a lot and I had to give in and try the Magic Candle Company with the show's discount code (which I can't remember right now.) I got Mine Train (woodsy and sweet) and Tiki Room (tropical)
I was trying to figure out a good bday gift for my sister and I'm glad I saw this qotd bc I think I should include some of these for her.

unrelated...I think (no jinx) I'm finally not sick anymore. This has been the worst year for spring and summer colds. And it's of course really hot out, so I think tonight I'm due for some easy treadmill miles at the gym. I still haven't decided if I want to train for a fall half marathon (clock is ticking) or just run to keep fit and sign up last minute to a handfull of fall 5ks. Or maybe just do the hot chocolate 15k again and start 12 weeks out. Ugh, I'm being so indecisive. Just gotta stop stalling and decide on something!

I got the Vivoactive 3 last year on Prime Day. I had a 220 before that for several years, but the battery was toast.

Up until now I've actually used it more for Orangetheory than running. :o I have a HIIT app installed on it and use it during class. I really like the watch though, especially that I can flip it around and wear it so the button is facing up my arm rather than towards my wrist. IT's mostly a problem during OTF, I would pause the watch when doing wrist bending things like pushups, but I used to pause my other Garmin on occasion just running, as well, if I tilted my wrist back too far.

I've been eyeing the rose gold Garmin Fenix 5s as an upgrade from my 235 anyway, as I'm looking for some additional features while training for my first full marathon. Finally pulled the trigger thanks to the Prime Day deal at . Bonus: I get same day delivery! Currently stalking the delivery status...

When disboards spill over into real life: I brought up the candles at the dinner table. My kids declared their favorites were both from Soarin' (Fiji for one kid, the grass land with the baby elephant for the other). Then the topic turned into least favorite smells. "Mommy after running" was the agreed upon worst scent. I assured them I did not see a candle or air freshener that would be that smell. What would the RunDisney candle smell like?

Since @LSUlakes is probably still dealing with tropical storm Barry, I have a QOTD.

What do you do with a race shirt where you have registered but are not able to start due to injury, weather cancelling the race or a family commitment that comes up after you have registered?

My answer: most likely do a ‘virtual’ race of that distance, since I have a race with a really cool shirt this week that I will not be able to start. Admittedly it may be another few weeks before I can walk 3 miles since I finally was able to bend enough to get my running shoes on and laced this morning.

ATQOTD: I haven’t had this happen, but I’d probably still keep it and wear it. I mostly wear race shirts for training runs. I’ve also gotten free leftover shirts from old races at expos, and I wear those, too. To me, medals mean I finished, shirts just mean a race exists.

Fun Friday QOTD: What are your favorite Disney themed candles?
I’m late to the party I guess. I’ve ended up with a ton of candles from Magic Candle Co. my favorite by far is Banshee, I also ordered a Banshee car air freshener. I also love the dole whip one, the WL one, and Rome Burning. Although whenever I light Rome Burning I think my house is on fire. I was really disappointed by the Splash one. Haunted was ok.
ATTQOTD : I need to smell the candle before I commit. I’m picky about scents which is why I’ve never ordered any Disney candles. Maybe someday.
I’m usually the same, but except for Splash they’ve worked out ok.
