The Running Thread - 2019

I don't remember before running caring about weather except wanting snow days as a kid. As a teen I just ran and didn't care if I didn't because of weather. Now, I most definitely dwell on the cold days and forecasted snow days for sure. I visit Wunderground too much probably.

QOTD: How much more do you pay attention to the weather conditions now, compared to before you were a runner?

ATTQOTD: I have always been interested with the weather and would watch the good version of the weather channel for hours when I was younger. This was when it showed actual weather and not reality TV show garbage. Living along the gulf coast the threat of hurricanes excite me, and while that was more exciting before I became a homeowner, I am amazed by their power and how they work. Then in the cooler months when I hunted I watched the weather for our duck hunts. Clear blue skies are not our friend, but foggy and overcast was going to be a good day. So in short, my level of interest has remained the same, but thats because I just like the weather information.

Side Note: Todays question was submitted by a fellow poster. I hope I have captured the intent of your question.
Intent captured :)
If I had answered this question a week ago I would have told you that I did not previously obsess over the weather as I do now, nor did I complain about the weather as I do, and my obsession with weather is solely due to running. Short of it being weather that limited transportation or was going to send people out for french toast supplies pre-running I did not really care for more than what type of footwear was appropriate. As someone who now runs, I now want to know which day it is going to rain/sleet/snow/feel like FL and if that is going to be in the early morning or over lunch.

This week, I will say THIS IS OUR EIGHTH SNOW DAY AND I AM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND OR MY JOB! Maybe I will break 10 miles a week in March? Or never, because we will be iced in until May. Perhaps I should buy some spikes, but then I will be that runner in the road I curse at because I cannot stop my car before almost hitting her.
I'll still take iced in over running in August :)

Honestly, the thing that made me check the weather most often was getting a dog -- really just to ascertain how many layers/what layers I needed to put on to get her outside in the morning without freezing or melting. The only time now that I look at it in specific regards to exercise is to see if there will be a break in the radar on days that it's raining or snowing.

ATTQOTD: I am more attune to the weather as a runner. Like others, I look at the hourly forecast to find the optimal time to run.

In the winter, I'm looking at temperature and wind to find the comfiest time to run.

In the summer, I pay attention to the sunrise time so I can get my run in as early as possible. In Atlanta/North Georgia, there's no need to check the T+D in the summer because it's always 140+ at 7AM.

In both summer and winter, I'll shuffle a run to dodge the rain.

I'll still take iced in over running in August :)

Good thing we live where we do, because I always say I'll take the hottest day of the year over the coldest. Check back with me in August.

Re kid... For the first time in my life, the forecast for snow day was so solid that all schools announced last night that they would be closed today! Between shoveling, I am watching Frozen and Snow White.

ATTQOTD: I was actually obsessed with weather, but I never cared about the daily forecast until I started getting more serious with my running. I also live in Florida and tracking hurricanes is kinda fun(unless they’re coming for you). Now part of my daily routine is checking 10 day forecast w/ dew points lol. For all my fellow weather nerds, I highly recommend weather underground and their blog Category 6 by Dr. Jeff Masters!!

YATTQOTD: Running has greatly improved my anxiety and overall mental health. It's also made me a much more confident and outgoing person (still not considering myself an extrovert, but I've gotten much better!)

ATTQOTD: I've always been interested in the weather. I pay attention to things like humidity and the radar a lot more now though. I used to only care if the sun was going to be out or not. Luckily we don't get extremely cold weather here or snow that often, so I don't have to worry about that.

Attqotd: I pay a lot more attention to the weather. To see when we might get rain in summer because it usually means lightning, and waaaay more in winter.

We have been getting pummeled this year. Even the rail trail has a 3 foot layer of packed snow on it. I’m over it from a runner stand point, but glad from a “we need it in the reservoirs this summer,” view, since we are technically part of the Great Basin.

Yesterday’s ATTQOTD: Like most everyone else, it improves my mental health. There were a few runs during marathon training where I’d go out with stuff on my mind and come home and have a good cry which is very therapeutic for me. I also feel like I can gather my thoughts and be able to talk through things a little bit better after a run.

ATTQOTD: No, I have always checked the weather multiple times per day, mainly so I know how to dress for work. We go from 40s to 70s pretty quickly throughout the week so I never know what to expect.

Which made me think of one of my favourite... One could easily replace Convertible with Running Shoes...

ETA: And the conclusion is good for Valentines Day tomorrow!

ATTQOTD: I have always been concerned with checking the weather. In winter, I need to know if we will get snow, which coat to wear, do I need boats, etc. In summer, I am concerned making sure I get in my beach days.

ATTQOTD: Back in the day, we watched the weather on the local news in the evening and occasionally listened to it on the radio in the morning. Now I check the hourly. For example, I waited this morning until the temp raised up to 49* before I went out for my run!

ATTQOTD: As others have said, I now pay more attention to details of the weather. If I have flexibility about when I can run in the day, then I'll look at the hourly forecasts for rain, humidity, or whatever is relevant that season. I definitely pay more attention to the T+D...we have a weather station with a monitor that sits in the kitchen, so I'll find myself considering the T+D at random points in the day when I happen to look at it. Also, I've passed on the T+D obsession to my DH, who doesn't run - he will remark to me about unusually high or low T+D values for the season and say things like, "At least you don't have to run in this."

We don't get that much snow in my area, but I'm obsessing much more about when that small amount of snow will GO AWAY so that I don't have to wear my microspikes. It seems like the snow sticks around a lot longer now that I pay attention to that. :)

ATTQOTD: I’ve always been a bit of a weather nerd. Growing up in South Florida it was to see optimal beach, tanning, boating windows. Then I married a rice farmer from AR, and the weather forecasts became more critical and less for fun. Now we rent the land so we still check weather and discuss weather daily, but it doesn’t have the same stress inducing qualities it used to. I am flexible enough that like many here, I can adjust my run to match up with the best running conditions of the day-except before sunrise! I only get up that early for races!! :crazy2:

ATTQOTD: I guess I'm in the minority who does not obsess over the weather. I wake up for my runs and check my weather app to make sure I know what to wear, but that's about it. I almost never look at the forward forecast. Of course, I almost never have extremely cold weather to contend with in Houston...

It's funny, I never really checked on the weather much before. Just enough to know whether I needed to take an umbrella or whether we might have a snow day. Now I'm poring over the hourly forecast to make sure I schedule my runs optimally :)

QOTD: How much more do you pay attention to the weather conditions now, compared to before you were a runner?

My typical commute has involved at least a mile of walking, or several miles of bicycling, for the past 10 years or so. You notice the weather under those conditions, at least as much as the SFBA has weather. (As a former coworker of mine put it, "California has climate without weather.")
