I would imagine Disney’s room assigners do everything possible to put people booked in different categories whose reservations are linked nearby if at all possible. If at check-in your rooms are really far apart, you can ask at the desk if there is any way your whole party can be closer together. If you wouldn’t mind moving after one night to make this happen, you can let them know. It’s possible a room that wasn’t available the day you check in will become available the following day. Thanks CM12. I don't want to get upgraded but the other family that just booked was looking to be close to us.
If the reservations are linked would Disney attempt to put us close together even though one family has preferred and the other standard?

One time when we were upgraded (staying at the Contemporary), the rest of our family (in another room) was not upgraded. It was inconvenient that we weren’t nearby, but we were happy to be upgraded (it was to a club level suite!!).
