This Is Us- Season 3

When Randall was running with Deja he made a comment about her running so much and so fast that his shoes were wearing out. Seems they enjoy running together. She showed up at her biological dads sporting goods store and told him she only wanted one thing from him then he would never have to hear from her again. It is implied that she asked him to give her a pair of very expensive running shoes, which she gave to Randall. Then she told Randall and Beth to go forward with the adoption. I guess it was Deja's way of closing a door on her bio dad and moving forward.

Thank you. I remembered the rest of it, just not the running part.

That's how I took it, too. But I won't be surprised if that interaction suddenly brings Deja's father back into the picture. They made a point of having Deja's mom say "I guarantee he won't want to be involved" during her termination of parental rights hearing. (Famous last words.) And it is ironic that "getting what Randall wants for his birthday" is likely to cost what Randall REALLY wants for his birthday.

Kate comments where so hurtful to both Kevin and Randall about only her being able to passing anything from Jack on. You could tell it crushed Randall. Kevin, you need to learn to keep your mouth shut lol.

To me Randall is the most like Jack. He tries to be everything to everyone and has the biggest heart.

I hate to see the beginning of the destroying of Toby.

I also hate to see Toby going down this path. I think it is going to get ugly.

My heart breaks for Randall. He is struggling with identity and where he fits in. White people see him as an African American man, but AA people see him as too "white." I love Randall, he is my favorite on the show, and I hate to see how crushed he is. When that lady told him he was not "one of them" you could see how upset he was. It was the same as Deja said to him last week, "you are trying to prove we are the same, but we're not." Also, it hit him like a ton of bricks when he heard Kate had said he had no biological connection to Jack.

Felt bad for Rebecca and how she is blaming herself for Kates weight and Kevins drinking.

Loved the scene where Miguel spilled the IVF drugs and everyone froze. Then Toby says, "I'm a heroin addict."

I did love the heroin addict line, and also the one in the Lyft about some things should be kept between a husband and his wife, and his Lyft driver... lol

I was heartbroken for Randall after he learned of Kate's comment. :sad1:

I'll be very curious about the IVF story line. It's something I understand because that is why I have my twin children. Someone back a page or two said why would they jump so fast to IVF. Given the issues, it's not fast at all. PCOS is a reason for IVF a LOT of the time. Add in age (38) and male factor, and bam, absolutely. At 38, you don't have a whole lot of time to waste. 6 months tops would be all any legitimate doctor would recommend "trying the old fashioned way." What I will also add is that making it seem like IVF is risky for the mom is just ridiculous. Sure, like all medical procedures, it carries some small measure of risk, but not nearly as dramatic as being portrayed, that's for sure. I literally know hundreds and hundreds of women who have done IVF, and I do not know a single one who had any sort of life threatening, or even serious, complication because of IVF. The other thing they are glossing over is how expensive this procedure it. It would be much more realistic to have them worry about how to pay for it than Kate having some medical risk from it.

I want to know how Toby & Kate afford anything! Do either of them even work? They have a very nice apartment and we always comment how all she drinks is fancy sparkling water. She's always dressed well, etc. I can watch a movie with a talking mouse, but dang it, stuff like this bugs me so much!

Kate used to be Kevins personal assistant, but she quit. They did say that Toby was an IT computer guy last season I think. It was briefly mentioned.

It was heartbreaking the way the comment hit Randall. But then we looked down the row from Randall's perspective and saw Kate looking back at him with a warm and loving greeting

I think there's room for understanding between the way Randall is taking what was said and what Kate actually meant. IMO there's simply no way Kate wouldn't take down anyone who would dare suggest that Jack would have been more delighted with grandchildren from Kevin or Kate than he would from Randall. I think if Randall is completely transparent himself about the whole subject he'll admit that he's happy that a bit of William lives on in Tess and Annie -- at the very same time he's devastated that Jack didn't get to meet them and vice versa. Randall is uniquely in a very good position to understand how both ideas can coexist, both ideas of love and family have their merits and in this case there's no need to think about one trumping another or one cancelling the other out. I'm hoping that Randall uses both his big brain and big heart and just decides to lean into the idea of more love all the way around.

I agree that Kate's comment was mean, and that the whole feeling of being caught between two worlds must really be hard for Randall.

I hadn't realized quite how much Rebecca shut down after Jack died.

My favorite thing was in the preview at the end, though, where the younger versions of Kate are "talking to" the older one. I can't wait to see the whole scene!!

Such a tough time for a parent to die. Not that there's ever an easy time. But it shows how much Jack's death affected the entire family.

I was the same age as the kids when my dad died of a sudden massive heart attack. It affected my mom very much like it seems to have affected Rebecca. I didn't expect the show to hit so close to home. But wow! it pulled me back through these last 30 years. It was the reason I too changed my college plans and felt the need to be at home.
