I love credit cards so much!

But they may be getting there via a search, not starting at the beginning or a random page. I just don't like change for change sake unless it's an upgrade and I'm not yet convinced it would be an upgrade.
Ok - well I will report back on the results of the survey (which are viewable by all at the link I shared). IF we had active moderation on the budget board I'd imagine they'd potentially have already closed this thread and moved to a new one. That said, we don't have active mods here and we could just keep this rolling until we hit 10,000 pages - who knows when we truly get cut off, LOL!

I can say that there's probably no way a new thread will be an upgrade. Aside from maybe having an introductory comment where we explain what this is about and potentially a name change to more accurately reflect what we discuss here...nothing else will upgrade.

12k left of Amex MSR. :crazy2: I’m almost done with the 32.5k lol. I feel like it’s going so slow, but hopefully I’ll be done soon. Walmart was back to normal for me today, I took a break yesterday.

@DisneyMandC my SO is also frustrating. I found out he put $400 in lyft rides on his freedom unlimited!! That was the default card and he didn’t change it. I have all this MSR Ugh.

One interesting suggestion somebody made in the "Other" comments section of the survey was to create a thread by year. So we'd wait until the end of the year and then have an I Love Credit Cards 2019, and so on each year (or whatever we choose to name it)... I thought it could be a neat idea.

I like that idea. I clicked in the survey, then realized I really didn't have an opinion one way or another :p. If you're willing to take the time to reorganize and put together a few first pages of helpful info, I think that would alleviate some of the "I know someone posted something about something, but now I can't find it" questions (I feel like I ask that kind of question once a week or so, at least). Not that folks here won't continue to be patient and helpful in directing each other to stuff, but it would cut down on some of the need to re-post similar info.

I think the Discover cards seem to be the easiest for younger people, especially if he is a student. My nephew applied for the CFU after college graduation and put down his new, great, income and was denied. I don't think he had anything much on his credit report, I think they said he was in low 700s score.
My dd18 has the Discover and has been an AU'er on a couple of my cards for two years. When she applied for the Discover, they said her credit score was over 800 :) Nice! So, after having it for a few months, we applied for her a Disney card. We put down what she had made from babysitting this year, which was right about 3k, as income. They sent her a letter saying they wanted to see pay stubs...well, that is difficult when babysitting is your source of income...so no card for her. However, I think if she could have produced pay stubs, they might have actually approved her. She's on the hunt for a 'real' job right now and once she has regular income, with pay stubs to prove it, I think she will try for a Disney card again.

I am going to second or third or fourth on the Discover. I would think that were he is going to go will mostly take Discover (gas stations, major food places, shopping for clothes) and those that won't maybe he can hang on to your card as just a backup. How about BoA cash rewards as a possibility.
I agree. My dd is able to use her Discover pretty much everywhere (except the vending machines at college).

I have been waiting for at least a month. Nothing

I made a purchase and the AF hit within days. I paid both a few days ago but no miles yet. My first statement hasn’t closed yet, though

My miles posted the day my statement closed. I didn't pay my bill until the due date.

So my statement closed this week. balance 0 as I paid it right after I made the purchase since I can't figure out how to set up auto pay. No AF yet and no miles (other than 2 which equals my purchase).

Yes! Also, I was like "what the heck have you been buying?!" DH loves to shop, and he tries to tell me all the time that I should buy some new clothes for work. I always tell him I can't afford to buy any because he keeps blowing our clothes budget!

The Suntrust Signature checking was an easy $500. I just SMed them to downgrade my account to the essential checking. I had no fees hit my account despite not having the 25,000 in there. They waive it for a few cycles and my bonus posted quickly
I am about to close my Chase account and recycle that money for a new bank bonus. Is this state specific? Or open to all?

I don't know where my brain has been this week, but it just occurred to me that I can open a Chase account for DH too and do the same thing from his Fidelity account!
Yeah! I do have a somewhat willing P2 on bank bonuses. I did Chase earlier this year - getting ready to close it. Then talked DH into opening checking/savings as well. $1000 total!

It’s state specific but idk if you will have luck opening out of state. Right now it’s in branch only, but they seem to extend the bonus frequently and I think it will be available online again.

ok random question of the day..... looking to get one 19 yo set up with his own card....he's been an au on a couple of mine for at least a year now...and is cheaper than dirt so completely trustworthy on his own...I just want him to start paying his own bills vs. him repaying me out of his bank acct. after I pay them (like phone and insurance etc- in this house if you have it you have to pay for it:thumbsup2) what are the best newbie cards for a kid? is it the freedom family too high a bar? I like discover but it isn't good everywhere I was thinking maybe FU since he doesn't want to fuss over categories? but I don't want to waste an app if it's not going to happen

I'm pretty sure Chase wants to see 6 months - a year of credit history. My kids started with Discover, which has double-cash back for the first year.

I have a question about Amazon Prime... and it is sorta CC related, bear with me please :)

Our Prime membership is hubby's, he's the member I'm the household. As part of that he's got the Amazon Prime spiffy metal CC. I have an offer to join Amazon Prime student for a free 6 month trial, and they'll give me $10 off a $30+ purchase. I've been thinking about how to work a student Prime membership angle now that I have a .edu address again which I think is part of the criteria for signup, yes? But I don't know how it all works.

I know I could just do the student trial in conjunction with our regular membership, but I'm trying to figure out how to save a little cash if we can easily. If it disrupts too much than I'll just forget it and only use it for the discount. Do you know how often they do verification checks? It's a 6 month trial and I'm not sure if I'll still have access to my email when it comes time to renew for the annual $49 fee. But if they only check yearly or something I might be in the clear and can save our gift membership for later.

But what happens if we let hubby's prime lapse in the meanwhile? Do we lose anything other than the extra cashback from the Prime card? AFAIK we're not using it other than Prime Video and shipping (we don't even borrow each other's books). Would I have to re-setup the household under my account to share it? (Oh, can you share a student account? I really do need to read I guess ) Or is there a way to use my email and convert his prime into the Student for the offer? And the important question (not! :p), do they take away his Prime card and send a plastic regular Amazon replacement?

I think this is a good idea -- it has worked for the dept-dumpers thread(s).

The linked article here reminded me of @Budzooka‘s case of mistaken identity.

Banks are keeping closer tabs on your reputation than ever before — and it may explain why one Sapphire Reserve cardholder mysteriously had his account shut down by Chase

TL;DR: Amid regulatory pressures, banks are keeping tabs on their customers’ reputations more closely than ever, and using technology to monitor news for negative or "adverse media" about clients — litigation, criminal proceedings, or otherwise unsavory information that might indicate that a customer requires a closer look. Banks have broad power to cut ties with customers who pose a reputational risk.

This is so funny. My SO is always the one buying new toys. He recently got new cameras for the apartment, blu rays, new shoes, and wants the new Apple Watch and iPhone. I told him he could get the new iPhone and watch but it must go on the Amex!! He tried to order the watch but it was delayed shipping. We have also developed a Disney pin addiction recently and have spent a lot of money there this past month. I think I’m the more frugal one. I hardly ever buy clothes. I wear clothes from HS still and I get new clothes as gifts around my birthday or Christmas. I’d much rather spend money going out to eat or on vacation. But really after the new Apple toys, we are done. lol I need to keep him to his fun money budget. I feel guilty keeping him to a budget because I have no income right now, but even when I do I do not want our fun money budget increasing.

You've gotten lots of good advice on Discover - I think there's even a student version. Capitol One is another consideration. They seem to give cards to higher-risk issuers, and in fact a basic Cap One card ended up being my very first card when absolutely no one else - not even store issuers - would approve me in my early 20s.

My ditzy brain! I was going to suggest that as an alternate to Discover and totally forgot :) Guess it's my unconscious attempt to subvert business as they are not high on our list of anything. We kept trying to get rid of them and just when you thought you did, they bought another bank and drew us back in. Hubby despises them but now has at least 2 Quicksilvers from when they bought his smaller bank issuers. (not to mention the ING purchase, still sad about that)

Personally I think they suck, but they do give credit out when others look away. And just cuz it's not my cup of tea doesn't mean it's not a viable option for someone.

:offtopic: I know we have a lot of Hamilton experts on this thread...I may have a chance to see it in Chicago in Dec, so I need help! Has anyone here seen it in Chicago? I'm wondering how bad obstructed or limited view seats are? This would be our first time seeing it, so don't want to miss too much, but we also probably can't spend several hundred dollars.

Also, would Ticketmaster be the best place to get the tickets, or is there somewhere else I should look for a better deal? Is this one of those things that a concierge could help with, or no?

TIA!

Hamilton fan here! My family saw it in Chicago -- we had seats in the second row of the Mezzanine and we could see everything. As for the obstructed view seats, if I recall correctly there are "obstructed view" and "partial view" seats. I think the obstructed view seats are, as other have said, something like a rail that you can potentially see around, whereas partial view seats are on the extreme sides of the theater and so you can't see part of the stage. There are seat review websites that should let you "see" (virtually) what the view will be.

I have read that it's likely that Hamilton will be leaving Chicago after January, so I hope you can see it in December!

Just called the number that Lain gave me for the American Express Business Platinum 100k bonus offer and it is still available! But apparently I really need to put some spend on my SPG Business card so that Amex will approve me for some more cards. We went all the way through the application process then he got the pop up that I wasn't eligible.
