I love credit cards so much!

I did the survey but I frankly don't see how a new thread that is this open with ideas and advice is going to be kept secret...I'm not sure you can have it both ways and IMHO I wouldn't want this to become reddit or F**talk or some of those other 'nastier' environments. I've gleaned a LOT of useful info over the years at places like that but it wasn't nearly as enjoyable as coming here to read my daily updates....:goodvibes no matter how you slice it it was noted earlier that nothing here is anything 'new' on the general 'net..... it's all out there anyway. just my 2 cents, and I respect whatever choices you make here since you do a lot of work keeping all this up and I appreciate it! (also I like the size of this thread,it makes it way harder to navigate and sneak around easily lol)
Yeah - I'm not sure we want to be secret. We ARE the alternative to reddit and those other places. We help newbies, we welcome newbies, we educate newbies! We want that to continue, but truth be told, people find us on the DIS and we are ALWAYS near the top of the Budget Board and the "All New Posts" pages because we are so active.

I think a new thread could make sense just so new people don't try to read through some of the old pages which contain A LOT of outdated info and advice. Given our current pace we would probably create 1,000 pages within 6 months.

One interesting suggestion somebody made in the "Other" comments section of the survey was to create a thread by year. So we'd wait until the end of the year and then have an I Love Credit Cards 2019, and so on each year (or whatever we choose to name it)... I thought it could be a neat idea.

Another horrible thought crossed my mind. Will this count against his 5/24 Count? Because it was an open card that then got closed in the last 24 months
Imho yes if it shows on his credit report. I know it’s a new world but in the past Chase counted any card opened that showed on your credit report regardless of the cards current status.

ok random question of the day..... looking to get one 19 yo set up with his own card....he's been an au on a couple of mine for at least a year now...and is cheaper than dirt so completely trustworthy on his own...I just want him to start paying his own bills vs. him repaying me out of his bank acct. after I pay them (like phone and insurance etc- in this house if you have it you have to pay for it:thumbsup2) what are the best newbie cards for a kid? is it the freedom family too high a bar? I like discover but it isn't good everywhere I was thinking maybe FU since he doesn't want to fuss over categories? but I don't want to waste an app if it's not going to happen

:offtopic: I know we have a lot of Hamilton experts on this thread...I may have a chance to see it in Chicago in Dec, so I need help! Has anyone here seen it in Chicago? I'm wondering how bad obstructed or limited view seats are? This would be our first time seeing it, so don't want to miss too much, but we also probably can't spend several hundred dollars.

Also, would Ticketmaster be the best place to get the tickets, or is there somewhere else I should look for a better deal? Is this one of those things that a concierge could help with, or no?

TIA!

I can't help you figure out how obstructed limited view seats are, but just wanted to respond to say I'm glad we aren't the only crazy people who are going to Chicago in December to see Hamilton! We have tix for Dec. 29.

Approved!!!

Woo hoo! So glad you were able to get the 100K offer to pop back up. Just to make you feel a little better about the $550 AF, with over a quarter of the calendar year left to go, I am now $224.81 AHEAD on that whopping AF through a combo of utilizing the travel credit (SW gift card), Uber credits, Saks credit for the second half of the year and various other offers on the card. And that does not even attempt to value both the Centurion and PP lounge visits we have made this year. I realize the Uber credits and Saks credit aren't as easy for some to use, but I am beyond convinced the Plat card pays for itself and more.

I've seen it twice in Chicago (third time will be in November). It will really depend where the seats are. Some are a pole, so are just a small obstruction. They can actually be a great deal. The Chicago cast is great. I have gotten my tickets through ticketmaster. One time we were considered "obstructed" because I sat next to a pole.

I think the Discover cards seem to be the easiest for younger people, especially if he is a student. My nephew applied for the CFU after college graduation and put down his new, great, income and was denied. I don't think he had anything much on his credit report, I think they said he was in low 700s score.

Lot of stuff I've read on Chase is they want you have your own credit history for at least 6 months before they give you a card, just being AU doesn't cut it. So not sure about either of the Freedoms. I'd start with Discover, and I'm guessing he's a student somewhere so put that down and get the student discover, and he can still use his AU card for places that don't take it for the first few months. Once he's got at least 6 months of good history on his own, then go for the "fun" cards like CFU :p

I agree with this. My brother is 19 too and was an AU on my moms card. He applied for the FU a few weeks ago and was denied. He also had a checking account through chase. He was instantly approved for the Discover card though.

BOS - HNL non-stop starting in April. This is exciting for those of us in New England

Hawaiian has a 60,000 HawaiianMiles after $2k MSR in-flight offer on their HawaiianMiles Mastercard issued by Barclays. Once you fly Hawaiian, you’ll find that you’ll be constantly targeted for the card’s 50k offer. You can usually also pull the 50k offer by making a dummy booking on their website. [ETA: The public offer is only 35k.]

Just using Hawaiian’s JFK<>HNL route as an example, it is possible to book a roundtrip award flight in the main cabin for as low as 35k and up to 110k miles, depending on your dates and availability.

While this is true, given how quickly things change, with a new thread the stuff at the beginning could already be outdated within a week plus we'll be a hundred pages in. It's no different in the SB or GC threads. Any more they are more for questions than something you can go back and read even 10 or so pages to find stuff out. I also don't necessarily see this thread as something people are going to come in and try to read back much unless they are already active and on vacation. If I found it now I might go back 10 pages but probably less than that to get a feel for what the thread is for, but it's useless, like many of the huge threads all over the Dis, to read back more than that.

That's an interesting idea. I was going to add that as far as Google goes the thread title doesn't matter, Google is going after the message content. Someone looking at Google results might look at the title and decide it isn't the right website for them, but the title itself isn't really going to deter Google from ranking the results. I just wouldn't take Google into consideration when trying to come up with a new thread title.

You might be surprised but a lot of people come here and peruse the earlier comments. I've gotten a number of PMs where people were asking about things I said awhile ago and I'm like..."Sorry, that don't work no more", lol. Regardless, as fast as this moves, you're correct that things will become outdated quickly.

I am going to second or third or fourth on the Discover. I would think that were he is going to go will mostly take Discover (gas stations, major food places, shopping for clothes) and those that won't maybe he can hang on to your card as just a backup. How about BoA cash rewards as a possibility.

But they may be getting there via a search, not starting at the beginning or a random page. I just don't like change for change sake unless it's an upgrade and I'm not yet convinced it would be an upgrade.

You've gotten lots of good advice on Discover - I think there's even a student version. Capitol One is another consideration. They seem to give cards to higher-risk issuers, and in fact a basic Cap One card ended up being my very first card when absolutely no one else - not even store issuers - would approve me in my early 20s.

When I first discovered this thread I did start at the beginning. Of course it was probably around 1k pages at the time! At least with a new thread we could have several spots reserved at the beginning to keep info up to date, thereby reducing the need to read several pages back. I do like the idea of waiting until the beginning of the year. Just my 2 cents, which is worth exactly........2 cents. Lol)
