I love credit cards so much!

That's what spreadsheets are for!! Don't go risking them changing the UR transfer rule - that's where my tin foil hat comes out :)

I don't even think that's a tinfoil hat thing. I think the UR transfer rule is for sure coming. Chase has been hinting at it in surveys for probably a year now. The 48 month rule came out of nowhere and now people are scrambling to change their plans. Don't let that happen with URs. We already know they're thinking about it, and with all the changes they've made recently it's more likely than not it happens (and probably soon). And we have warning now.

Well I do feel bad for those that have had a monkey wrench thrown into their churning plans. For once I'm actually glad I am not going after Chase cards. Keep the optimism. I've been far beyond 5/24 for years with nary a hope of a Chase DD in my future and have had no problem getting where I want to go with points and miles. You will be fine

I'd like to stress this as well. The one I understand is the SW CP - I totally get how that can be worth countless hundreds to even thousands for people, and that stinks. But one thing I've tried to get across on r/churning - there is life after Chase. A lot of life, in fact.

I know URs are easy and that's why so many people are attracted to them, and with good reason. But there are a lot of points out there just as flexible. MRs are probably better than URs for international travel. TY points, while harder to accumulate, can be transferred to airlines, and redeemed for hotels at 1.25 cpp. There are a lot of cards out there. What changes is how you redeem. But it was always unreasonable to think these Chase loopholes were going to stick, so just keep chugging.

Not everyone will be comfortable with it, but my strategy ever since 5/24 first became a thing was to constantly work on MSRs and get through cards as fast as possible. These days, even Amex is getting tough, but I haven't had an issue because I already rolled through most of them. I probably will get the popup next time I go for an Amex card, but it's not a huge deal because I only have around 5 I haven't had yet. BoA has instituted a 2/3/4 rule, I've already had both Amtrak cards twice and a biz cash card. Barclays seems to be rolling out 6/24 to all their cards for new members, but since I got the Wyndham before they did that I was also able to get the Arrival+ well beyond 6/24.

My point - just keep chugging! There's a ton of value out there.

hmm, other group reports plastiq + master pass is charging ppl. promo ended early? I just tried it for $250 and it is charging me.

:-/.

Thanks for letting me know. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong last night. My DD's rent is an ACH and was showing $0 fee, but not willing to post lots of small payments with all the hassle I had last month with them over Plastiq.

This is a good idea if the school is willing and the scholarship can be allocated like that.

Otherwise, I wouldn't mess with Plastiq at this point. Last year, when the school district was paying for my dd's college but we still had to cover fees, we never got the bill. We missed the deadline to pay (early Sept) by a couple of days and we got stuck with a hefty late fee. Nothing I said to them would get them to take it off. I was so annoyed cause they had a problem with the high school students' bills going out so they knew we may not have received them...Anyways, since then I make sure to pay and pay early. East coast schools start much later than us so maybe there is still plenty of time for plastiq. Idk?? My dd's tuition was due 9/5.

I believe bills were due early August! I thought I had checked to make sure this payment went through, not sure if they initially credited $500 then backtracked or if I didn't really check. It was definitely a single $500 check because I mailed it in myself. She had a 2nd much larger scholarship that they did not split, that my DD is now telling my they told her they were going to split. So confusing. But I am hoping they think they split the other one and she magically gets extra money next semester! lol $250 is such a teeny tiny drop in the bucket of the total bill, so hoping no late fees or anything.

So we just double dipped a few weeks ago and are almost to MSR. Anything I should do/ don’t do? I’d hate to not get my bonuses. That would piss me off.

Also - since now we won’t be referring me to the csr until p2’s year is over, is there any card that reimburses PreCheck that’s a good bet right now. I’m still below 5/24 but think we should not overlap our CSRs since we now won’t plan to stay under 5/24 and.... it’s early. Anyway. PreCheck reimbursing card recommendations ?

Need to figure out what to do... I thought I paid my DDs tuition in full. Just recently got an email about a statement and I logged in to find they split a small scholarship in half, with the other half applied to Spring. So I owe $250 still. Do I just write a darn check? Go through plastiq again and eat the fee. Or try for a money order. It’s a small amount, but if I could get that on my Amex msr, that would be great. I am worried that she has a balance still so would like to get it taken care of ASAP. I think plastiq will be slow. And I’m scared of the money orders. Lol. I’m a bad churner. I’m talking myself into just sending a darn check. Ughhhh

I don't think you have any reason to be scared of just one $250 money order.

Ah! Ok. 3rd bank is your only option then. Do you have a 3rd bank? If not check out DoC’s list for one with a bonus or look into a hub account! Ally is my hub, I’ve had no issues & can link up to 20 accounts there, there are a couple other banks who make good hubs as well. Get on it fast, I think you have 10 business days?
I know it says 10 business days but then they sent me an email which says by 9/30. I was able to link capital one but the trial deposits haven’t hit yet. But that still may work. I need look into ally and learn about hub accounts!

Agree. Trying not to be a Debbie Downer but I see the 48mo rule coming sooner rather than later for the Ink cards and limiting those to 1 pp.

I'm with @SouthFayetteFan in that this news has upset me more than other changes chase has put into place (well, this and the 48mo on the Sapphires). UR's and RR's are my comfort zone. I know how to use them and I'm honestly scared of other points, like MR's. I'm trying to accumulate them cause I know I need to branch out but I'm pretty reluctant to do so. And then the only way I can think to use them is to cash out. The redemption of those points for flights or rooms just doesn't seem to jive with our way of traveling.

This is me! I came on here to mope with everyone else. DH is a great silent P2 but doesn't understand it all so I can't vent. I'm not even affected by DD (approved for CSR alone a few weeks ago) but having that come right after the 48mos rule (which kills my early 2019 plan) makes me worried for what's next. And figuring they have their eyes on the Inks. I love URs because I know how to use them. I have a few hotel brand amex's but no MRs. I know i'll have to branch out eventually. I received a capital one email that interested me with the chase changes, where I wouldn't even have looked at it before.

Since I'm posting, I'll add a question. I think it's been asked and answered but when I don't have a card, I skim responses and then have to backtrack later when I decide I really want it. :D CSR is new to us, the high AF scared me away but we have a lot of travel next year. If an airline ticket is bought on points (like SW, which is all I ever use), and the fees are paid with CSR, will I get the travel protections? Seems weird to get them for $11.20 in fees. But i'll definitely use that card if you do get them.

I remember that. It was hilarious. I never did it but yeah, some had gotten pretty good at checking values and then buying at GS to sell over at BB. Someone was helping everyone check values. It's right there but his username escapes me.

It was that guy(gal?) who worked at a resort in Vegas I believe . . . I remember that as well - too funny!

I’ll chime in with some more thoughts tomorrow when my head is a bit less foggy.

I’d really consider seeing if DH is targeted for the 100k personal Platinum offer on CardMatch or Amex pre-qualified offers, and getting the card if he is for this expense because the $7,5k fare would knock out the $5k MSR in one go, and flights booked directly with an airline on the personal Plat earns 5x MR. The Plat also has a $200 airline fee credit, and if you select United as your airline then you can use the credit on your check-in baggage fees.

Alternatively, you could get the CIP, which also has a $5k MSR, comes with a 80k UR signup bonus, and would earn you 3x UR on your flights and baggage fees. If you don’t already have the CSR, that’s another option that’ll earn you 3x UR on the tickets and bags, and a 50k UR signup bonus. Many people opt for the CSR and only 3x UR over the Plat and 5x MR for flights because the CSR has better trip delay/interruption insurance.

Thank you for replying when you don't feel well---I know it's difficult for me to think numbers then!

I'll check for a targeted offer later today :) Good to know about the better trip delay/interruption insurance with CSR as that's one of my major concerns.

:-/.

Its still working for me with no fees. I just made a $100 payment to Chase. First I enter my gift cards into Masterpass. Then I use Chrome in incognito mode to open Plastiq and pull my cards in from Masterpass.

Edited to add . . . sent checks - not electronic payments.

I did the DD 5 days after you and am also QUITE paranoid about getting both bonuses. I am going about the MSR totally opposite from you though. I have about $600 left on the CSR and haven't even begun the CSP yet. I need to wait for car insurance and taxes in early November.

What is your best educated guess on meeting the MSR'S? Should I carry on, completing the CSR first, then go on to the CSP. Or should I try to meet both spends around the same time, keeping in mind there is no way this can be accomplished before early November? My thinking on doing only one spend at a time is, if Chase decides to shut down one card they would probably close the card that has no spend on it. It was also the second in the DD and the one I would rather lose if need be. Ugh, I pushed up my DD date because I had a feeling, and now I just feel sick to my stomach, waiting for the hammer to drop. Just thankful it was my account and not my semi reluctant P2.

Wow, yeah, good choice not to use P2, I'd think closing a card would firmly set them into the other camp... at least it would at this house.

Totally unscientific, but so far all DPs I read are for folks that got them in September. So might be ok? Or they could be working in reverse order and will get to August later, but that seems problematic. Most of the affected hadn't received the CSP in the mail yet, like Chase was trying to nip it before you really used it. Gosh, tough call.

ETA: Argh, spoke too soon. DP's going back as far as 8/30 now :sad1: Link to our own Sarah_B's call posted after this.

The r/churning folks consensus is check payments are showing the fee but electronic still free. I hope it's a glitch but so close to end date maybe they decided to cut some losses.

@ericf70 - JFK is a hub for AA and Newark is a hub for United. Since the rule of thumb is always get your Chase cards first then I will suggest UR earning cards as part of a plan A to pay for airfare since you are flying economy. Plan B would be using UR points to transfer 1:1 to United if the award mileage required is less than what it would take to pay for the flight with UR points. There are plenty of British Airways flights out of JFK but I would caution against transferring UR points to BA. If you connect through or fly to London the taxes and fees on that award flight are brutal. That said, you may find some pretty inexpensive airfare (from tie to time) on BA. You can also pay for those, and any other airline with UR points. If you are an AARP member (you can join at any age) you get $65 off of RT BA economy transatlantic flights, $200 off for business and first class tix.

I think @SouthFayetteFan gave you a primer on getting a plan going with UR cards already. I know the DD is no longer an option but I'd still recommend getting the CSR since you've had the CSP for 6 years. You can product change and reapply. You will want to use the global entry credit when you get the CSR and the points will be far more valuable when it comes time to book your flights next year.

I do plan on flying to London, thanks for the detailed information.

@JKalai - he’s here in this thread too. Good times!

You do get the travel protections if only paying fees.

As for what's next, just my speculation, but - I think both 5/24 and the 48-month language are coming to all of Chase's cards. I suspect there are some agreements they have with the third parties (IHG, Hyatt etc) that prevent 5/24 from coming as of now (or they would have already been there), but sooner or later it's coming. And the UR pooling - that's been hinted for a long while and has even appeared in Chase surveys.

@hsmamato2 I'm confused on what your current 5/24 is and how many cards are dropping off. Can you lay that out again, please? Just want to make sure we are advising you right.
I was just coming to do that today..... so here goes-DH and I both around 825 score- only listing pertinent cc's within last couple of years opened-
ME (CK total open 14) *** DH (CK total open 13)
11/5/16-SWA+ ****** 4/30/16-Amex Hh-(AU)
1/10/17-CSR ****** 12/1/16-CSP (PC'd -FU 1/18)
2/1/17-SWA prem. ****** 2/1/17-SWA Prem.(AU)
5/26/17-Hh Amex ****** 5/26/17-Amex Hh (AU)
7/10/17-Chase IHG ****** 7/10/17-Chase IHG (AU)
8/12/17-Amex BCP (AU) ****** 8/12/17-Amex BCP
1/3/18-Barclay Jetblue
2/5/18-PC'd CSP-FU
2/8/18-SPG biz
3/2/18-Discover IT
5/23/18-Hh Biz
So as noted- I want to get/refer DH for the SWA CP plan in Dec/Jan- But I need to get rid of some of those (stupid) Au on his report to get going here. Also considering another Hh amex for me since the offers are so high right now.... that plus upgrading one of my SPG cards to the Luxes(assume I can pc back to a reg card later on?) and keeping my CSR.
***ETA*** b/c the format looked awful after posting lol and to say my goals are SWA points for domestic travel(lots of fam travel) plus hotel points for free nights.Disney is in my future- (swolphin or Hilton LBV) I currently have about 70k SWA and need MORE. about 140k UR and always want more. have a Hilton booking +about 210k points left. Maybe 120k Starriott left. ALWAYS asking and needing next step advice, even thru the uncertainty of changing churning rules.:goodvibes

DoC has posted that the BB, ebags 5xUR is a public offer. Any DP from people who haven't gotten the email but got 5X points?

Back in the land of the living this morning... felt like garbage last night and exhausted from work and my grandma being in the hospital, so I read some last night but just got caught up with everything this morning.

With DD dead, Citi AA MSR complete once all the charges post, and $700 into SPG Biz MSR, I'm thinking I'll go for CSR for DH right before we go to WDW in November. I'm sure I'll pick up some smaller MSR cards, but I think I largely need to put spend on my Chase cards now that I'll need to make up the 50k difference from where I would've gotten DH the CSP before, plus the 10k referral I would've gotten. I read the DoC article on 5x points with Chase Pay at BBY, so I'm thinking I'll do that to pick up $200 worth of Disney GCs with Swagbucks, even though the Swagbucks deal has reduced some. Is there something I need to do to add that deal to my CSP? I didn't see anywhere to do it, but don't want to miss it.

Also, just checked YNAB and saw that I put my first charge on my CSP one year ago today! I believe I had the card expedited, so I think I was probably approved around 9/10, 9/11. How soon will I see my AF post? I want to get the CFU ASAP.

ETA: Also need to do the Chase $300 checking bonus. Guess I need to send $1500 from Ally and then $25 from Fidelity. Always makes me nervous! Sounds like maybe 2 weeks from doing that before bonus posts? That's what yours was, right @havaneselover?
