I love credit cards so much!

I am anxiously awaiting for SPG to put in place on their website the ability to book rooms on points that I don't have yet. I hear it's coming imminently. I want to book the Swan in February using my 85k Marriott points I'll get from my new Marriott Premiere Biz card.

I noticed on my points advance ressies they seem to have upped the amount due to the new amounts, even though I booked prior to the change. They were speculative anyways, since I didn't know when/where to use my cert, and I doubt I'd be using the stays anyways. But if they don't fix the new mess they just caused, I definitely won't be using any of them.

It shouldn't affect you, since you'd be booking at new rates anyways, but an interesting tidbit to share.

A few weeks ago, I shared that my MIL was in the hospital. She passed away last night. She had been in declining health for some time, and has had numerous medical scares over the last few years, but she was the most uplifting and optimistic person despite all that. My wife spent over a week with her, and left her mother on the mend, in high spirits, and looking forward to us visiting again over the holidays. She began not feeling well again a few days ago, but it was touch and go. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the end was very sudden. Sadly, we weren’t able to say our final goodbyes in person. My wife is on a flight home to Hawaii now, paid for entirely with points, so one less thing to worry about. My daughter and I will be flying to Hawaii in a few days once funeral arrangements are finalized. I wish I had picked up this hobby years ago, which would’ve meant a lot more trips to Hawaii for my wife to see her mom and my daughter to get to know the amazing woman who was her grandma. But my MIL wouldn’t want us to live with regrets, and she was always happy with what she had. Small solace that we don’t have to worry about the cost of flying to and from Hawaii now. Thank you all for your well wishes.

Wow. 8/18 was a terrible day.
So sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was an amazing lady.

My 8/18 bad day in no way compares to Lain. Not really bad Marriott news for me. I only had enough points for a Cat1-5 Cert and I found a few places moving to Cat 1-4 that I would be happy with. So once available again, I'll attach. I didn't have final dates for next year so that is why I waited. Sorry to all who were not treated well.

My bad news is we pulled the plug on Glacier for this year. I'm sure none of you were following the fires as close as I was but it is not good. Fires in British Columbia which were blowing smoke over to Lake Louise, Jasper and Banff. Bad air quality. There are fires in Banff and just below Lake Louise. August 11, lightening started a fire in Glacier. Not contained yet and one of the park lodges was evacuated and closed for for the season. GTTSR is closed from the west side. We realized it was not going to be a pleasant trip and sadly decided to cancel. All refundable except the flight out to Spokane. Return flight is on SW so I can get a refund there. I did book my tickets on CIP so nothing to lose to see if trip cancellation insurance covers (severe weather which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from beginning a Covered Trip). Otherwise I'll be fine with the $200 loss, I'll take it out of one of the bank bonuses from this year. With Hawaii on tap for 2019, we'll probably plan for 2020 early to mid July.

Marriott really deserves some bad PR for their shady handling of the travel package hotel certificates. I totally agree with everyone saying that Marriott knew exactly what they were going to do and deliberately hid that from their customers. I hope Marriott gets its share of karma for being so devious and that they get shredded on social media.

I was just hoping for a fair deal, and I guess, naively, believed Marriott would be fair. There is no way Marriott just figured this out. To sell these certs at a higher value knowing they would actually have no more value than the category below is pretty stinky.

Like @disneymagicgirl , if they had released the chart beforehand, I would have upgraded my cert accordingly but with no info, it was rather difficult to know what to do.

I didn't have any excess points to upgrade my cert to (have Cat 1-5), but really disappointed with the way this way handled. I hope the ability to upgrade the certs is offered, even though the previous info indicated it wouldn't be allowed. Feel really bad for those who would have been able to upgrade but didn't know what to upgrade to, and those who did upgrade that are getting nothing out of it! I really think they should have just converted them to points. Or at the very least published the chart so everyone could make an informed decision! I really think that's the least they could have done. It will be interesting to see how much backlash they get, and if there are any consequences from it.

I had enough points to go up to a cat 9 but didn't want to waste points and thought a cat 6 would cover the cat 1-5's. In the end, I wasted 30k points :(

All Marriott had to do was put the chart out in advance. Why they didn't just makes no sense. Now they just have a whole lot of people mad at them. I would have been fine with the points conversion too...not my first choice...but rather have that than having a cert I most likely won't use.

I'm so sorry for those who got screwed over by Marriott.

I'll remember this as I'm taking Marriott for all the signup bonuses I can get before 8/26, stringing together a week of free stays somewhere with their FN certificates, then dumping them as I move our business and wallet back to Hilton next year.

I would too except I'm way past 5/24 so any Marriott/Chase cards are out. My last hurrah with exploiting Marriott/SPG will be getting the Lux SPG card during that 3 day window. Of course assuming that it works. We will likely wind up keeping this one too since we discovered a beach front Marriott about 15 minutes away that we've decided to use for weekend Staycations. The property is 50K/night so that is one weekend between 2 cards if we choose. The cash rate can vary between $200 and $650 per night. Redeeming the free night cert son the high end is a great value and something we could feasibly do each year. I'm thinking of NYE during years we can't leave town because DH has to cover for his co-worker since they swap who gets NYE off every other year or so. A staycation at the beach would be perfect.

I've become more of a Hilton fan now that we have the Aspire card.

I love that Hilton is running ads of FB etc taunting Marriott. "Hey Marriott elites, come on over to Hilton where you get free breakfast at all our brands."

Ya'll know I am a big hilton fan anyways...not that they never devalued before, but they seem to be trying to improve the program with recent changes. Most importantly, we have never had poor customer service from them. Thats huge to me. I just like to be treated fairly...not so much to ask, really.

I was cracking up over that.

That really stinks! Yeah, just really don't understand their decision making process on this one. I hope you can find a way to use your cert! I'm thinking we'll try to use it at the Courtyard Anaheim Resort/Convention Center for DL. Just not sure when I can fit it in. It's not my first choice, but if I can fit it in as a bonus trip we'll be happy with it I think. Trying to make Spring Break work for us (2nd week of March), but flights are really high. Maybe have to do two trips in the summer. Just not sure how I'm going to get DH on board with it... Do you have any ideas of where you'd like to use yours?

I think the Diamond status you get from the Aspire definitely helps. I'm still sore over how stingy Marriott was with offering only Gold Elite status on the [$450!] SPG Lux.

Oh man that burns. I'm sorry  I agree that they should have listed it in advance. That would have been the fair thing to do.

Have had a very busy weekend moving DD in. Now on way home reading all the bad news for Marriott and Plastiq. Boo. I guess I am fine with the Marriott since I only had a 1-5. Had I enough points I would have gotten the 6 and now very glad I did not. Very sad on the loss of points for plastiq. I only just started.

@Lain So very sorry for your families loss. Prayers for safe travels and peace for your wife and her family. I was 4 when my grandma passed and I do stilll have some memories of her. Hard to believe when sometimes I can’t remember yesterday! But you hang on to those things that count.

I had not looked at anything under cat5 so, I think I am going to wait to see how it all shakes out with Marriott first. I'm hoping they get hit hard with bad PR and that they allow upgrades. I'll upgrade to use at a cat 5 somewhere. I was hoping to use in combo with the FN's on our cards. Probably DLR area as well but @disneymagicgirl sent me a RI in Hawaii that I might be willing to stay at as well. Either way, in those cases, I need an extension cause we aren't heading to either place in the next year. So, maybe I just pay the points to upgrade so I can use at Swolphin since we will be at WDW next summer. Obviously, i'm hoping they allow us to upgrade!

Disneyland peeps: this got buried in the Disneyland community board but FYI the new hotel is on indefinite hold. Apparently their tax subsidy was location dependent & the approved location was indeed the much rumored parking lot area. The council can pass a resolution or something to give Disney the subsidy at the new location so be aware of that but the current council has some pretty bad blood with Disney.
