I love credit cards so much!

First, I'd like to say that it warms my heart over how much Southwest love there is on this board. While I'm not too happy with their prices lately, I do enjoy flying with them! Is there any information related to how much SW points are worth? I booked a flight from MCO to MKE for X number of points (I don't recall the amount), but the $ price was $123. The price has gone down to $99, but it shows me no difference in points cost. Also, booked another flight over Christmas. Cash price for those without points was $437 round trip. My points costs was just over 27,500. It's no big deal. I'm just curious.

That seems strange. I don't think there is a hard set value on per point. It kind of depends on the price of the flight, ie the points are worth slightly more on lower priced tickets.
Did you book the legs one way? If so, take a look at the bottom of the confirmation email. It should tell you how many points you used for the flight.
However, if you booked a round trip, it's hard to break out the how much the legs cost in points. You might not see a price difference in total if one way went down but the other way went up.
I always recommend booking one ways, it makes the changes easier.

Yes I agree with @Psychodisney about booking as one ways. Was this for one way? I was able to save some points from my original booking at $106 down to I think $92. Though I did notice it was fluctuating between $92-$96 and I think the points stayed the same between those. I think it is around $0.014/point give or take a little bit.

I've been lurking on this thread for a couple weeks now and am ready to ask some (pretty basic, I'm afraid) questions.

Our future travel is split:
  • Youngest dd will be flying SW to/from school (BWI-IND) multiple times a year. She will also be flying internationally multiple times during the next four years. Some flights will be to Morocco (those may be booked as group flights so we may not have control over choice/payment options) and others will be to China (Beijing and Shanghai are the most likely).
  • Dh and I are ready to do some serious traveling, beginning with Australia in fall 2019. Business class is preferred. Other future travel destinations include Africa (safari primarily), Greece/Southern Europe (cruise?), Scandanavia/Northern Europe, and Great Britain. The easiest airports for us are BWI and PHL, though getting to EWR/JFK and IAD/DCA isn't burdensome.
(I'm going to start with the first international trip for dh and I. Dd's international travel will be figured out later--she's not sure yet where she'll be studying next summer. I know that at least one of us will get a SW card to start covering some of her future trips back-and-forth to school.)

Before I get to the card-choosing stage, I need to figure out which airlines fly to where we want to go, which alliances they are in, and how many miles would be required for each. Is this correct?

Is it easiest to start with google flights?

Do flights "cost" the same number of miles to an international destination such as Sydney regardless of where in the US you begin?

Thanks for any help!

Maybe not if it's considered a third party booking (which it probably is :( )

From the Marriot's Rewards T&C:
"There are instances when a stay will not be eligible to earn Points or elite night credit. For example, rooms booked via third party online retailers, like Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Priceline.com, are not eligible."

Also, just FYI, convention rates get sticky depending on how it's billed:
"If the Member attends a convention or group meeting and individually pays the hotel directly for the room, he/she will be eligible to receive Points and elite night credits for the stay. However, contract rooms, rooms reserved by corporations on an ongoing basis and master-billed rooms are not eligible to earn points or elite night credit."

But can't hurt to put the number on it somehow, because they're partners with Chase maybe it's a different qualifying rate? I don't know, I always book direct.

Thanks! I'll just book directly. Cash rate is only like $82 with tax and I would rather just earn the points and pay with my Marriott card. Don't really want to use my URs anyways but figured it would be worth it if I could double dip using URs and earning Marriott points.

lets start with awardhacker.com or let us know what city you are flying out of.
let us know what it comes out with.

Also, no elite night credit on third party stays, so if you are shooting for status, cash (or Starriott points) is definitely the way to go, esp. at that price.

I love Southwest! This just happened to me too actually. I had 3 flights booked (one way booking) but only two seats were left at the lower price. Since I needed to change three seats, online showed zero difference in price cost. I had to call in and they needed to move one of my tickets to its own confirmation number and the other two seats were adjusted to the lower price and points refunded.

Ugh...Colin from plastiq AGAIN...This is getting freaky with all the plastiq stuff lately. It's like he's personally looking at my account! Stop! Go away! I don't need your assistance or to talk to you about what I'm doing!!

I feel like somehow Colin is going to become our mutually shared enemy :rotfl2: It seems like you always hear from him about a day before I do so I'll look for his email tomorrow...

Not that I think anyone is clamoring to get it, but there's "support" for IHG cards now. If you have the old $49 card (was that Select? can't remember) or the new $89 Premier card you can generate a link to the new Premier card. I have the old card and it worked.
(I can't take credit, I saw a mention on r/churning about it and checked my card and shocked it actually worked since there was no support for that card before.)

Offer is 80k points for 2k spending in 3 months + 5k for adding a AU (same terms as the CSP AU offer). AF is not waived.
The seemingly usual 10k for you.

Did you guys see this?

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/amer...g-sign-up-bonuses-looks-at-closed-open-cards/

After my experience getting the bonus to post for DH on his Delta Amex I have been a little bitter and hesitant with Amex. Of course that hasn’t stopped me from getting two more cards with them. But still...

so this basically could mean I hit MSR and get no bonus randomly, and with no way to know until I get there?

ummmmm, what!? That is waaayyy too vague and not worth a hard pull.

For some reason it just took me 10 minutes to activate my Disney Rewards card for my measly $25 I have in rewards since the last time I emptied it probably 5 years ago. I have no idea if it is even activated because the lady was very confused. I am not sure why it even went to an operator after I entered number via keypad. After insisting that I don't even have a Disney Visa so how could I have a reward card she finally found my visa and then said I didn't need to call to activate reward card. Well, there is a sticker right on card that says call to activate or card will not work. Very weird experience.

Can you help me understand this?

Alas, I'm behind again . . . but a quick update on Plastiq. Hats off to Colin from the Plastiq Small Business team. He spoke to customer service and reinstated my accounts and the kids' accounts! They had actually flagged EVERY ACCOUNT that had used my referral code - even my parents' accounts. A bit extreme but its now fixed. Unfortunately, I now have to re-schedule all of my payments. Good grief! I so wanted to ask about the guy who bought a Tesla, but I held my tongue - lol.

I guess @wendow and I will stop hating on Colin now!

Geez. I wonder how they made sense of DISer accounts that used your support link.

But glad you got your account restored!
