Pop Century Room Renovations

Still trying to figure out what to ask for w/ our Standard Pool View during our mid-July visit (15-22). My daughter loves Lady & the Tramp so any other year I would choose 50's without blinking. Now I'm wondering if I should request building 3 instead of building 9.

Will just have to wait and see!

We check-in a week from Thursday, and reports of rooms in building 3 being close to opening have me irrationnally hoping for a brand new refurbished '50s room :D I've already added my requests by calling, and honestly, if we get a refurbed room (we booked standard), I really don't care which building we get. But I've always wanted to stay in the '50s, as that decade appeals to us the most. Anyway, I love reading this, because the more rooms they close, the more chances we have of actually getting a refurbed room!
:woohoo:

Booked Pop for first time for FD in December! Can someone explain the building numbers for The 70's section. It seems like all the other sections have numbers in order (1,2,3 in 50's section) but looking at the map, it seems 70's has a building 6 and a building??? 10, 0, I can't figure it out based on the room numbers.

Also, is it considered a sister resort with AOA--can you use pools at both resorts or not? TIA!
Pop cannot use AofA pools, but AofA can use Pop pools. Reason: AofA pool is fenced up with magic band scan lock. Pop pool is also fenced up, but the gates have no locks. That might seem unfair, but in reality the AofA pool always look super crammed, so they really can't take any more people.

Edit: Because the AofA main pool is locked up but the Pop pool isn't, I've always assumed that it means AofA can swim in Pop but not vice versa. That has always made me feel somewhat resentful towards AofA because who exactly are they fencing against, if not the Pop people? Nobody else goes there. I didn't know that even though Pop has no fence lock, AofA can't swim there. Not that they would ever want to.

On a related note, I did recently learn that DVC members not staying at Pop can swim at Pop if they want, but not at AofA.

For all who may be interested in reducing shin bruising pool noodles do help. We bought one at the dollar store and cut it in half. Then cut one half into four pieces and then slit it up one side and put it on the upright parts of the Murphy bed. It didn't cover the very edge that sticks out, but because it was a bright colour we saw it before walking into it. The only times we bumped into it was when they were removed for housekeeping.

Hopefully this will help people in the future.
What? Seriously? One must protect one's shin at the new rooms now? Thanks for the tip. I will think about how to handle this. Bringing noodles won't be an option for me because I'm flying long distance, but I'll figure something out.

Yeah, the new beds they have been installing recently at Pop, CSR and Yacht Club have the frame sticking out a couple inches farther than the mattress. Terrible design flaw.

Yes. The platforms, they hurt....hurt real bad. Small room, queen beds, and a murphy bed platform that has to extend an inch or so further out than the mattress, has created an unavoidable obstruction. First time, I crumbled to the floor it hurt so much. The other 5 times I hit it, were not nearly as hard. Shin hurt for a good month after that trip. Proceed with caution in those rooms. Danger is lurking.

Even suggesting this can get you removed from DISBoards. You may wish to edit your post so as not to provide false information.

AoA guests cannot swim in Pop pools.

We flew down from Toronto. Because we had cut the noodle we used them as edging of our lugagge to keep the things from shifting too much. Multi purpose pool noodles.

Like Stitch83, you could cut a pool noodle into (about 10-12" ) pieces and pack them. Or request an extra blanket, fold it in half several times, and tuck on long end between the mattress and team while the other end drapes over - and pads - the corners and end.

We were there for 8 nights in Jan. Yes I gently bumped the frame once or twice but really it’s not hard to be aware of your surroundings. The platform is easy to see. Unless you are a person who moves quickly most times it isn’t difficult to avoid the platform edges.

Here is a picture of what the pool noodles looked like on the bed. As I said it didn't completely cover the part that sticks out but it was eye catching enough to stop us from walking into it. My bruise from the couple of times we didn't have them on is almost faded 2 weeks later.

I was thinking would tucking a towel and hanging it over also work? I am a fast, hectic person and can see myself getting bruised up.

It might work. Someone there now or soon would have to try it out. I am trying to picture it and for me I think we will still bring the pool noodle as I feel it would provide a little more resistance than a towel or blanket when walked into at a bit of speed.

We are here now and I have tucked a folded up bath towel into each corner. (asked the mouse keepers for a few extra towels) They hang down just enough to cover the shin killer.

I know someone a while back posted that they tore the corners off a 12pk soda box and placed them over the corners of the platform bed. They didn't give any padding but created a visual alert and kept bumps down to a minimum.

Are the new beds pretty comfortable? We stayed DVC at the Poly this year and the beds were on a platform and were terrible. I'm a little wary now, but I've not noticed anyone complaining about the comfort of the beds, so I'm hoping the Poly was a fluke!
