13.1 You Wish Upon A Star...a Tink Race and Mother's Day Trip Report! (complete)

I'm so glad that the famous Internet Ariel (sorry, @Ariel484, but I'm calling you that from now on) found you in the corrals! It's always good to have an experienced friend there with you before the race to help calm your nerves!

Yay for Disney magic helping roxymamamama! It's awesome to hear that her numbers are better!

That picture of you and @Ariel484 and @ZellyB is one of the most wonderful things ever. Seriously. I love that you guys all ran into each other and took a picture!

A+++ for matching the castle. Best costume matching ever!

I'm glad you got your Chip & Dale picture! I remember that stop from the WDW 5K ... the line was nuts, so I don't blame you for skipping it (although ... I think I was a corral or two behind you, so it might have been less insane for you).

You look so happy in all of your pictures. You were clearly having the time of your life. It's so wonderful!!

(By the way ... the need for feminine products happened to me at my first half too. Not something you want to have to worry about on race day. Life has crappy timing sometimes.)

Tinkerbell Half Marathon Part 4

Miles 5 through 13.1!

So just a heads up that there will be no pics until heading into the finish so this will be just one big chunk of text first. I'll try to keep it non-confusing :)

So we were officially backstage at this point and I had been kind of eyeing all the in park bathroom but didn't "have to go" so didn't. But now I knew we were nearing the "out on the streets" portion of the run and I decided now was a good time attend to "business" and get myself all set up for who knows what would be out there outside the Disney bubble.
So I want to alert you all to a race first...this was the first time EVER I stopped for a potty break during race. So after waiting probably two min for a ports potty which felt like so long, and struggle bussing to get already sweaty compression shorts back on comfortably (ugh!) I emerged and realized it was time to get the earbuds out and Spotify music set up (I chose the rundisney virtual race series summer playlist) and get my first gel ready for the upcoming water station. All this fussing plus gel ingesting led to a pretty slow overall 5th mile. 12:05
It didn't really reflect that I was moving really well...when I was actually moving!

Fun sidestory. As I was finishing up my cherry chocolate gel and trying not to be a litterbug so standing over the last trash can of the aid stop another lady came up to do the same thing. I said "cheers" and she held up her gel and we clinked them. It was just too funny.

After that odd reset mile I felt like I was starting a totally new race and I think that helped. 8ish miles sounds less scary than 13. And I kept thinking "just get back to the parks! The last couple park mikes will be easy". The power of positive thinking.

So out on the streets it was sunnier and a bit warmer and the crowd really spread out. The roads were a bit cambered and so I found being as far left towards the middle of the road (generally only one side of the road was closed for us) if I stayed there I was a bit higher up and it was flatter. It also helped me pass run/walkers or people stopping. There was much chomping in these next few miles (a term coined by my coach @DopeyBadger where you act like pacman and attempt to pass/chomp people who passed you at the start)
I was feeling pretty proud of my high 9:00/low 10 paces here. Just trying to hold steady but also sort of ebbing and flowing with the crowd around me.

Mile 6 through 8 were pretty monotonous out there. I can't remember too much differentiation save for a random band playing "I kissed a girl" and a sidewalk DJ. I continued to walk and double fist liquid during aid stations
Mile 6 10:16
Mile 7 10:15
Mile 8 10:03

Not as fast as I'd hoped for in a perfect world race but I felt pretty strong out there and was walking water stops and I knew mile 8 meant clif gel party zone!!!
Ummm or just some unmanned card tables full of different gel flavors.
My chocolate one from earlier was kinda hot when I took it (probably because it was getting warm in my armband...ewww) so I grabbed a citrus one. And downed it with my next water stop. And boy did I get a bit burpy. TMI??

I did miss the lack of red hat ladies. I was imagining how nice their support would have been around this mile. But they weren't here this year. Mile 9 through 11 was more of the same feeling. Lots of room to run, not a lot of spectators or entertainment. And although I was moving well (never really near long run pace, always faster) my walk breaks for water continued and my pace started inching slower. My legs were getting tired.
Mile 9 10:25
Mile 10 10:42
Mile 11 10:25
Rebounded a lil there.

I did yell "Nice Shirt" at a lady who had my same shirt on with really cool crane tights. She laughed and that was pretty much my only human interaction for the street miles.

It's amazing how long a mile can feel when you know you are nearing the finish but aren't quite there yet. I could see the Tower of Terror off in the distance but I had no idea how to get to it other than just left foot and right foot and left and right. I don't really remember the music in my earbuds too much outside of a few of my faves coming on at the beginning. I think I zoned out on the music at some point and started zoning out on watching my pace or the time. Which was fine...it was a way more relaxed outing than I anticipated for myself.
And then before I knew it we were going past hotels and entering the bus entrance to the park. There were actual park goers getting ready to line up for their day so we had some crowd support again finally. Mile 12 was 10:44
My initial strategy to "let er rip" for the last few miles was just not happening. My legs were tired and just focused on keeping them moving and what it felt faster than these paces usually feel like ...was all I could do. So I just focused on getting my body to that last portion into downtown Disney. And it felt longer than the last few miles combined. Ran past tons of cast members coming in for the day.
I walked briefly the last aid stop which I don't see on the map but I swear it was there. And then just said to myself "come on girl" and pushed after that.
Rounding to the part right before mile 13 there were finally so many people there cheering for us and I just became so choked up. And my sis was right there cheering me on. I had looked at the mile marker and knew I could sub 2:30 even after all the pic stops and the water stops and the tired legs and I just started crying the happiest tears.

Total emotional overflow!

And then the finish line was there and I was crossing it.
Hands up! One wing down but still fighting.
IMG_9951.JPG

My first half 2:27:15
Moving time on my garmin says 2:16! Those technically aren't too accurate but that's not too shabby right? I'll never know for sure because I didn't pause or hit lap button...I just let it run.

And then
IMG_9878.JPG
I love this medal!
IMG_0019.JPG

The paddles are a lil cheesy but heck if I wasn't gonna grab that I Did It one and show it off! Not sure if you can tell but those are happy tears still in my eyes. Thankfully a lovely lady in a Moana outfit who was running with a stuffed Hei Hei was there to keep me laughing and not sobbing!

I didn't stick around the finish area too much. I was suddenly voraciously hungry and couldn't wait to get showered so I could put on my Tink race shirt, my medal and shove all the bacon in my face.
Below pic courtesy of Bean waiting for me in DTD!
IMG_9914.JPG

My legs were ok. I mean they were dead weights but no knee ouches or blisters. No weird chafing. No blood. Did I just survive a half marathon in decent shape?
I did!!!

It was hard at times and easy at others. And I know I've got another PR in me under different circumstances. Thank you so much Billy for setting me up for success! My training plan kicked my butt at times but I'm glad it did. I couldn't have done this without it!
I'm also so happy my hubby supported me in my decision to do this and all the hours I wasn't home but out training. And just so happy my sis said yes to coming so I had a reason to sign up in the first place. And if I start talking about my mom I'm gonna start crying again. Sobs!

I feel like a superhero and I don't think that would have changed with a few minutes less or a few more. Just feel like I did something that so wasn't me only a few years ago. In 2015 on May 23rd I ran my first ever real running 5k. It felt like it took forever and was so hard. It's pretty sweet how far I've come.

Thanks for reading all that if you did. I promise more park pics including that bacon! And stay tuned for a bean report about being a race spectator :)

Congratulations!!! I'll admit I got a little teary eyed reading your ending! You should be so proud of yourself and you certainly ran a FANTASTIC race!!

Motoring! during this race for sure while I was moving. Maybe one of these days I'll run one straight and see what I can do? Maybe no two days straight of parks though!

Congratulations!!! I'll admit I got a little teary eyed reading your ending! You should be so proud of yourself and you certainly ran a FANTASTIC race!!

Thanks for the kind words. Want to join my sappy race report reading club? I've been tearing up at race reports long before I even started running :)

Yay!! You did it! And you did such an awesome just ... sticking to the plan and fighting through when necessary. You are an amazing flying fairy superhero!!

Love your race recap!!! Your wings make it seem like you were flying through that race! Congrats on the half marathon! You rocked it!

Now is there a certain dwarf in your future......?

Loving ALL of this!

Bet that looked lovely at night

WoC is pretty stunning. I got a little tear-y the first time I saw it.

I hadn't seen it in person and boy was it a sight to behold. I think this picture shows how gleeful it made me.

<3 this. They did a fabulous job with Cars Land. I remember being kind of "meh" about it when I heard they were doing it, but we went during my last trip out there and I was really wowed.

In hindsight I'm happy with the pics I did get and happy with my final time so I think I made the right call.

YES! If you can walk away from a race like that and confidently make that statement, you ROCKED IT.

I really like the group of costumes on the gals behind me. Feels like you'd know this was a Disney race immediately looking at it.

I agree. But I totally can't imagine running a race in a Belle costume. Good for that lady.

I chose the rundisney virtual race series summer playlist

Wait. What? This is a thing???? (urgently launches Spotify on phone to find for tomorrow's run)

I feel like a superhero

A ROXYHERO! You earned that feeling!

I'll admit I got a little teary eyed reading your ending

Seconded. Amazing.

That's just pretty awesome that your first time seeing Carsland was running your first half-marathon through it.

You got me all verklempt with how you felt at the finish. That's a great time for your first half, much less a Disney half with multiple picture stops. You go, girl!!!

So happy for you and glad I got the chance to see you on your journey. Congratulations!! :jumping1:

Yay! It's easy to stick to a plan when the plan is very loose. There were times I felt like I should've been faster but I enjoyed myself so much that I don't even care now about that.
I just realized that Batman is kind of a flying fairy superhero when you think about it :)

Love your race recap!!! Your wings make it seem like you were flying through that race! Congrats on the half marathon! You rocked it!

Now is there a certain dwarf in your future......?

I'm so glad I kept the wings on. They were a bit wonky in some pics, but they were a lot of fun to have on. I forgot to write about it in my recap but there were miles where the sun was pointed so we could see our shadows...and having the shadow of the wings in front of me to look at definitely was a fun thing. There were times I forgot they were there until I saw my shadow.

As for a certain dwarf....well I'm soooo not ready for that kind of thing right now. However completing a half after two full days of park foot pounding gave me a new found respect for you all that have achieved the dope status. I mean...that really is something.
If I ever did it, it'd have to not be coupled with a family vacation. Because that would be too much for me.

Awesome finishing your first half!
Thanks! The last mile was tough but was worth it for that finish line.

Congratulations! We should try to meet up at a race this summer and compare Tink notes!

Sounds great to me. I'll be running the Rock N Roll Chicago 5k and 10k in mid-July but my race calendar is wide open. Anything I do this summer with races will be "for fun." I haven't really looked closely at any other local races yet, but I should.

Loving ALL of this!

Seconded. Amazing.

Spotify has some good rundisney playlists. But I liked the virtual shorts playlist because it had some good summery songs and included a bunch of Moana. I also am a fan of the Wine N Dine Half playlist and the Princess Half playlist depending on my mood. The Avengers Half one is pretty good but I can only listen to it if I'm doing a tempo or fast workout because it's very heart-pumping music. Not good for an easy day. In hindsight maybe I should have put that one on at around mile 11.
Awww...a Roxyhero....well I guess if I can't really fly or have super powers, I'll take running.

Being verklempt is like 75.86% of my life. #sappy
Yeah, as much as I was kind of like "why are my legs not moving faster" in the later miles...looking back I'm SUPER PROUD of that time. Still scratching my head at how my body is doing these things. I can see where trying to get faster can get addictive.
So happy to see you too this weekend. I wish we were there for like a full week so I could've hung out with everyone longer.

Yay!! Awesome job - congratulations! Love how happy you look!

Thanks!! I really was happy. Life has thrown some tough stuff my way and I've had my fair share of not so happy moments. It was nice to have a morning of just personal joy.

Way to go! You look fantastic at the finish line!

I couldn't agree more about this "... last portion into downtown Disney. And it felt longer than the last few miles combined."

Happy for you and what you have accomplished! Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Your race recap gave me all of the feels. You are AMAZING! I could just feel your sense of accomplishment reading along- SO cool! Congratulations again girl! You rock!

Thanks! And yeah, anytime there is a finish line ahead the road seems to stretch longer than it really is!

Y'all being so nice is giving me all the feels!

Great job! Congrats on finishing your first 1/2, I have really enjoyed reading this TR. As someone who has yet to go to Disneyland it is great to see and read all about it.
Your pictures came out great and the wings weren't too "wonky" they helped you fly to the finish! :)

I'm glad you've liked the TR so far. There's still a bunch more I'll be posting about my final day in the park and experiencing even more new DL things!!

I was so nervous I was visibly shaking/trembling as I was getting dressed and attempting (but pretty much failing) to stomach any of the water or gatorade or clif bar etc that I had set out for myself.
This just makes my heart happy, because it shows how invested you were in this process, and how much you were truly going to give it your all out on the course!!!

But it was really helpful to have a familiar person with me
NO kidding! That is awesome! In the last 5 years, I have had someone to talk to in the corrals twice :(

but really I was "flying" pretty blind for this race. So it really was an "adventure."
I think that's the best. I never want to know a race course, and actually find my local races-where we run the same areas I train on, to be very mentally draining.

I think I had the biggest grin on my face from the moment we entered Toon Town
YES! Runnning through Disney parks really brings on such a wonderously elated feeling!!

just shows it is ok I stopped
It totally is!! That is the whole point of Disney races. Especially if you have done the training...you have EARNED the right to stop!

This pic is now famous on at least three whole trip reports.
Because it is an epic shot!

And the straight on view...

The smile I can tell you was genuine
MOst definitely, you are radiating JOY!!!!

My first half 2:27:15
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Sensational race report!!!

I'm so glad that the famous Internet Ariel (sorry, @Ariel484, but I'm calling you that from now on) found you in the corrals! It's always good to have an experienced friend there with you before the race to help calm your nerves!
I should probably just head to the courthouse and apply for my official name change, yes? :)

I think we helped calm each other down - I was lucky to have that before both the 10K and the half!!

struggle bussing to get already sweaty compression shorts back on comfortably (ugh!)

This is THE WORST. If someone invents some sort of device to make this easier, I will 100% buy it.

THESE PICTURES ARE EVERYTHING. OMG I just love them. I feel like you could look at these years from now and they'll take you right back to exactly what you were feeling in that moment. They are awesome!

I have one from January where I crossed the finish line and you can see the emotion on my face...looking at it just brings back all of those feelings of doing something that I thought wasn't possible.

I Did It paddles are cheesy - yes, I agree. Like they couldn't figure out how to get the picture borders right that they used in the past, so they said "screw it" and slapped paddles in our hands! :rotfl2:

LOVE THIS!! Great picture @AuntieBean !!
And I know I've got another PR in me under different circumstances.
Seriously though. Between the hotels being within walking distance, the parks being so close (easy to park hop) and walking around the parks themselves - especially when pushing a wheelchair - it's a whole other beast running a half at Disney compared to at home. Plus traveling to the West Coast. If you pick a local half, I have no doubt that you will get significant PR!
I feel like a superhero and I don't think that would have changed with a few minutes less or a few more. Just feel like I did something that so wasn't me only a few years ago.
I'm so glad to read this - I'm so happy that you didn't get too caught up in what your time was - that you fully ENJOYED this experience. Congratulations!!! :tinker::tinker::tinker:
