WISH Away the Pounds January Challenge -- Jumpstart the New Year -- Everyone Welcome!

:wave2:

I am so far behind and not sure I will be able to catch up so for now I am popping in to say Hi and probably Bye! We leave for Disney on Friday so not sure I will be back again this month. I WILL be here next month!

Have an awesome trip! It is not working out exactly how you planned, but just do the best you can and have a great vacation! We will be here when you get back. I bet many of the food indulgences will be worked off with all the walking - even if not, a trip like this is a special time to enjoy, so take advantage and get back to the daily grind once you return.

Hope the weather is great and everything works out for a fabulous time!

Hello, friends!

I am so far behind on replies...I'd lose my mind if I tried to multi-quote everything I wanted to respond to from the last week and a half! But I've been reading... :)

lovetoscrap, have a wonderful trip! We just got back, and I'm already counting the days until we go back. Ah, to get out of this winter!

eliza32, hope you're feeling better!

To all who sent congratulations on my Dopey finish, thank you!! :woohoo: I'm still riding a pretty good high from it, even as I start to get back into training mode for the next half marathon (Rock 'n Roll USA in DC in March).

We got about 6" of snow and some ice from Tuesday's storm. Messy for the DC metro area, but the roads were fine today - but still no school. And they just called our county for tomorrow. DH and I are whacked - our work doesn't call out so easily, and we're having a hard time managing the kid coverage and getting work done! We've lost President's Day as a school holiday and now the April teacher work day (this actually helps us as parents - we get a Date Day on President's Day and don't have to find backup care on the work day), and who knows how late we'll end up being in school if we get another storm? I have visions of having our last day of school right before we leave for Aulani on July 13... :scared1:

I'm also getting back into losing mode after having put on 15 pounds over the course of the fall. I blame marathon training (hungry all the time), the holidays (not the best food choices while I was hungry all the time), and a vacation in December with DH (see the holidays excuse). So even though I'm lifetime, I signed back up for Monthly Pass at WW to get the ball seriously rolling.

And that leads into my Wednesday Woo-Hoo! I have two:

1) I signed up for Dumbo Double Dare today! Going for my Coast 2 Coast medal on a solo trip west for these races - a little me time and a lot of running. Can't wait to catch up with a few of you from this group! :hyper:

2) Our At Work WW meeting was canceled yesterday when my work closed (almost unheard of!), so I made it out today to a local center with DDs in tow. I'm so glad I did. I was down *8.2* freaking pounds!!! Aaaahhhh! This doesn't help my January challenge numbers much because I put a bunch on after the January 1st weigh-in - I might still miss my goal here for this month, but I'll be down, which I thought was going to be impossible. And everything I put on after January 1st is back off! I have been counting points like a boss and getting stationary bike workouts in on the days when I can't run outside because it's -12 with the windchill (like this morning).

So I'm in a really good place tonight. Even with the kids out again tomorrow...I adore my DDs, but I NEED THEM TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL NOW.

XO

I am sorry that I am taking part in the thread so little at the moment - February will be better!!

However, even though my eating isn't too good, I am still managing to get rid of those Christmas pounds quicker than I thought. I guess there is a truth in it that pounds that are gained quickly can be eliminated quickly if you don't let them settle in! :thumbsup2

Am going away this weekend, but since the hotel we are staying at has a gym, I actually packed my running gear and will try out the thread mill. Am not doing lots of exercise right now and access to a tread mill will be a good bonus!

Good morning all! :goodvibes

A friendly reminder that tomorrow is weigh in day! :flower3: Can't wait to see our colors change again. :rainbow:

I think Helen must still be ill so I will post another QOTD with a little help from my friends at sparkpeople.com

5 Signs It's Time to Get Real About Weight Loss

It's easy to say that you want to lose weight. It's also easy to find the motivation to hit the gym regularly and choose the right foods in the beginning. After a few weeks, our motivation seems to wane and those old, unhealthy habits of yours start to creep back in. What seemed so easy at first is now difficult. You have cravings. You're tired. You miss those social dinners with your friends and doughnuts at the office. That 6 a.m. aerobics class doesn't seem as fun, and getting up without hitting the snooze button seems impossible.

Sound familiar? So many of us have fallen into this yo-yo diet and exercise trap over the years. You decide you want to lose weight, start a program, and even start to see some results and then…life gets in the way. Before you know it, you're off your healthy living plan again. While SparkPeople has the tools and resources that make weight loss fun and uplifting—a true lifestyle change—you still need to commit to using them. You have to commit now and, well, forever. You have to choose to change your life, both when life is breezy and when things aren't going your way. Whether you have 5 pounds or 150 pounds to lose, you have to get serious if you're ever going to reach your goals.

Sign #1: You keep waiting to start. Stop putting it off!

Sign #2: You can't do the things you want to do. Focus on functionality.

Sign #3: You're facing chronic health issues. Live longer and healthier.

Sign #4: You give up easily. Get back on track.

Sign #5: You're envious of others who have lost weight.Make yourself a priority!

QOTD Thursday, January 23, 2014: Which of these ideas can you put to use this week to motivate yourself? Or do you have another great idea that keeps you motivated?

BBL with replies. :goodvibes

P--never heard of tofu noodles? What is in the ingredient list? And wow, on the passport mix up. Hope it gets straightened out quickly.

LTS--have an awesome time!

Wahoo Wednesday--well I came home to a huge mess yesterday and didn't have a food binge. :goodvibes They were installing a new microwave in our apartment (which we have been without since the beginning of the year) and our kitchen floor was absolutely filthy, the back of the oven was covered saw dust, and there was a huge new scratch in the floor. We are still in an apartment, so I am not sure what I should have expected, but what a mess! The managers aren't going to be coming in to a very pleasant voice mail this morning.

Wish I had more time to chat, but the temps are still brutal and we got a little bit of snow, so I am expecting a long commute, plus just warming up my car will take a while. :)

Have a great Thursday!

Afternoon, everyone!

I actually can't believe it is still this cold. Last year at this time, I had just moved back from sunny Florida, and I was FREEZING all the time as my body adjusted to the weather. But, if I had come back to THIS - I probably would have just turned around and gone back LOL

Am I crazy? I honestly can't ever remember having this many single digits in one month!

Anyway, I hope everyone is staying warm. I've been staying at my parents house while they are in FL (lucky ducks had their flight cancelled and got to stay an extra two days!), so we shall see whether or not my heat is on when I go back to my place tonight! :worried:

Hope everyone is enjoying Women's Healthy Weight Day! I'm nervous about my W/I tomorrow because I went a little off plan last weekend, but here's hoping my workouts made up for it!

Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the year - National Peanut Butter Day!!! Peanut Butter is one of my favorite foods and tomorrow, I will be making a peanut butter and banana toasted sandwich and I am SO EXCITED!!! Did you know the average person consumes 6 pounds of peanut butter every year?!?! :thumbsup2 Personally, I have a goal to make my own peanut butter one year!

It is also Belly Laugh Day at 1:24pm - (1/24, 1:24) so set your alarm tomorrow for a nice big laugh to spread laughter throughout the world! Tomorrow is also National Compliment Day - so give someone an unexpected or unwarranted compliment, just because. Or give yourself one!

Well, if the flax bread didn't work this time, try another brand/type/flavor. You might have to give it some time. Was it ALL flax or was it a flax/oat bran mix?

It was all flax. I like wheat bread and wheat tortillas, and they're only 1 point more than the flax bread, so I thought I'd try and see what it was like. I'm a huge bread person - its a big staple in my diet. So, I'm always looking for new ways to heat some healthier bread. This, however, was just not for me haha

I bet many of the food indulgences will be worked off with all the walking - even if not, a trip like this is a special time to enjoy, so take advantage and get back to the daily grind once you return.

I'm with you on this! Walking around Disney parks is the best way to burn off all the food you eat - plus it is totally worth it! :)

I signed up for Dumbo Double Dare today! Going for my Coast 2 Coast medal on a solo trip west for these races - a little me time and a lot of running. Can't wait to catch up with a few of you from this group! :hyper:

:woohoo: What in the world is the Dumbo Double Dare?!?! Sounds scary and intense! GOOD FOR YOU!!!

QOTD Thursday, January 23, 2014: Which of these ideas can you put to use this week to motivate yourself? Or do you have another great idea that keeps you motivated?

Thanks for posting this, Lisa!

I'd say that last one really helped me - Make yourself a priority!

I do put an awful lot of pressure on my "goal weight." I keep saying "well, once I reach my goal weight, I'll go buy new clothes" OR "once I reach my goal weight, I'll be less lazy about going out and hang out with my friends" etc, etc. I have to remind myself that this is a process and to treat myself each step of the way so that I CAN get to that goal without falling off the wagon. :)

MAJOR woohoo and WTG on the 8 pounds!! Take that, holiday weight!

I am sorry that I am taking part in the thread so little at the moment - February will be better!!

Glad to have you with us whenever you can make it! Glad that the holiday pounds are washing away!

I think Helen must still be ill so I will post another QOTD with a little help from my friends at sparkpeople.com

5 Signs It's Time to Get Real About Weight Loss

QOTD Thursday, January 23, 2014: Which of these ideas can you put to use this week to motivate yourself? Or do you have another great idea that keeps you motivated?

BBL with replies. :goodvibes

I am committing to SIGNIFICANTLY reducing my carbohydrate intake for two weeks (at least) starting Monday, January 27 in the attempt to get these holiday pounds off a little quicker. For some reason they really want to STICK this year. :furious:

P--never heard of tofu noodles? What is in the ingredient list?

The ingredients are water, tofu, yam flour, and calcium hydroxide (not sure what that is :confused3 . They are 20 calories, .5 gr fat, 3 gr carbs per 4 oz serving. The texture does take a bit of adjusting to (more rubbery than real pasta and less dense) and some folks claim that the initial smell is off-putting, which is why nearly every recipe using these noodles recommends a good rinse and a parboil, even though they are cooked (and packed in liquid). I have used the fettucine noodles, the spaghetti, and now the elbows. I think I like the spaghetti the best... not sure exactly why. Maybe because the marinara tends to give it much more taste.

Just checked the package and they are GF! They are also non-GMO (important to me) and vegan. They are House Foods tofu shirataki noodles, found in the produce department in plastic bags.. nooodles are packed in water.

I can post a picture of the package if it would help.

And wow, on the passport mix up. Hope it gets straightened out quickly.

We got his passport today but also included in the package was MORE paper work for this other young lady!!

Have a great Thursday!

Sorry that they left you a mess.... that would make me nutty! I can't even stand it when I get home and DH has left the mail scattered on the kitchen island! :rotfl: Glad you didn't eat into your frustration.

Afternoon, everyone!

I actually can't believe it is still this cold. Last year at this time, I had just moved back from sunny Florida, and I was FREEZING all the time as my body adjusted to the weather. But, if I had come back to THIS - I probably would have just turned around and gone back LOL

And who could have blamed you???

:worried:

Fingers crossed! Perhaps if the heat continues to be an issue you could push for a small refund of your rent, since you essentially had to sleep elsewhere several nights!

I have made my own and it isn't hard at all. If you have roasted peanuts (salted or unsalted) a bit of oil, and a food processor you are ready! I am SO taking advantage of National Peanut Butter day and making peanut butter and banana toast for breakfast tomorrow!!

I'll have a hard time with the laugh.... my family says I have no sense of humor. Plus I'll be at work.... the kids make me :furious: more often than :lmao:

It was all flax. I like wheat bread and wheat tortillas, and they're only 1 point more than the flax bread, so I thought I'd try and see what it was like. I'm a huge bread person - its a big staple in my diet. So, I'm always looking for new ways to heat some healthier bread. This, however, was just not for me haha

Like I said, see if you can find a wheat/flax blend. You would get the health benefits of flax but more of the taste of the wheat.

Do NOT put your life on HOLD waiting to do everything when you get to goal. Start living your life NOW!! :thumbsup2

*****************

Evening all! Well, as I mentioned above, the CORRECT passport came today!! So I can officially send another of my children off on the adventure of a lifetime without me!:rotfl2: Parent meeting for the trip is tonight, so it came just in time!

Dinner is done (veggie stir-fry with fish sauce.... with pork for DH and extra cabbage for me :thumbsup2 ) and the men are off to robotics in a few minutes. I will leave here at 6:30 for the meeting at the high school. Hopefully it will be short and sweet.

Not much for me to report on. Work today was about as good as can be expected (subbed in art) and not sure where I am working tomorrow. I think I will go pick out tomorrow's outfit and decide on tomorrow's lunch and see if anything needs prepping/defrosting. Then when I get home after the meeting tonight I can just wash up and put on my jammies and snuggle into bed with my book. I am reading a Disney-related read.... Marty Skylar's "Dream It! Do It!" I wanted a "real" book, but the Kindle version was cheaper and easier, so I bought it. Really enjoying it so far!

I may or may not be back to post again tonight, but best wishes for a good visit from the Scale Fairy for everyone tomorrow!.............P

Good morning all! :goodvibes

A friendly reminder that today is weigh in day.

It's very quiet around here so I will go with a fun fact question for the QOTD Friday, January 24, 2014:

Organized or disorganized?
Pink or blue?
Fall or spring?
Musicals or plays?
Talker or listener?
Planner or "fly by the seat of your pants"?

Beach or mountains?
Traveler or home-body?
Running/walking or Spinning/biking?
Snow blower or snow shovel?
Team player or independent worker?
Downton Abbey or Dr. Who?
Real books/ magazines or electronic (Kindle type)?
Oatmeal or eggs?
Cheesecake or chocolate cake?
WDW or DLR?

BBL with replies! Remember this is still A WHOLE WEEK to get closer to your goals! ::yes::

QOTD Friday, January 24, 2014:

disorganized
Pink
spring (Cause that means summer is coming soon!)
Musicals
Talker or listener? (Depends on the situation)
Planner or "fly by the seat of your pants"? (Both)
Twizzlers or Red Vines? Neither
Beach
Traveler
Running/walking or Spinning/biking? Both!
Snow blower or snow shovel? If I had a choice--neither, ever again!!
independent worker
Downton Abbey or Dr. Who? neither....
Real books/ magazines
eggs
Cheesecake
WDW--though my first several visits were to DL when we lived in San Diego for 5 years.

I am still down for the year by 1.6, but I was hoping for a little lower, so I am going to hold off on my weigh-in for a day or so. I have not gotten a good workout in this week (though have been walking my mile a day).

I am DONE WITH WINTER. It is 3 this morning. And more snow is coming tonight. With more arctic temps next week. We just don't have temps like this and it is getting ridiculous. Mike and I were talking, and it has to be effecting some of the plant life around here, because we can normally grow some plants that can't be grown further north (crepe myrtles, azalea bushes, some grasses). Ok, whine over.

P--thanks for the explanation of the noodles. Where did you get them? Sounds worth a try. :goodvibes Glad the passport is straightened out.

Lisah--I will start coaching early--how about this afternoon--since Helen is still out of commission.

Have a great Friday everyone! I will check back in this afternoon. :goodvibes

Those are two great :woohoo: Liz! liesel will be doing the DDD again this year too. There are usually several WISHers at DL races. :cool2:

Yep rewarding yourself along the way is important as well as living each day the best way you can NOW no matter what number shows on the silly scale! :flower3:

Oh thank you for volunteering to start your coaching gig early! :flower3:

You have been having a crazy winter -- and remember just a week or so ago you were happy for snow. ;) :rotfl: This is a good year to be an apartment because if you had a yard to take care of I'm sure there would be lots of plants to replace.

Good morning all! :goodvibes

A friendly reminder that today is weigh in day.

It's very quiet around here so I will go with a fun fact question for the QOTD Friday, January 24, 2014:

PS: LOVED the circuit workout. Can't move today, but loved it!!

Hi all! I'm back after a bit of an absence. I gained a bit of holiday pounds (sound familiar anyone?) but got my act together this week and am now down to my pre-holiday weight, woo-hoo!

Organized or disorganized? A combination of both! My husband would say I'm disorganized, but my clients say I'm organized.
Pink or blue? Purple.
Fall or spring? Fall.
Musicals or plays? Musicals.
Talker or listener? Probably more of a talker. Too much silence bothers me, so I like to fill it.
Planner or "fly by the seat of your pants"? Depends. When it comes to WDW, definitely a planner!
Twizzlers or Red Vines? Red vines.
Beach or mountains? If the mountains are covered in snow and have a ski lift, then definitely mountains.
Traveler or home-body? Traveler.
Running/walking or Spinning/biking? Running/walking.
Snow blower or snow shovel? Neither, we don't get much snow in TX.
Team player or independent worker? Independent worker.
Downton Abbey or Dr. Who? I haven't watched TV in ages, but I'd like to watch Downton Abbey, more my speed.
Real books/ magazines or electronic (Kindle type)? Real books.
Oatmeal or eggs? Eggs.
Cheesecake or chocolate cake? Cheesecake.
WDW or DLR? WDW.

well my great month hit a BIG BRICK wall with today's WI :worried: :faint: I even got the most workouts in this week of all...but it's a kick in the pants that I'm not journaling...and even though my mind wants to say I'm almost on vaca that is not being on vaca....and so I need to make these 10 days count!

Organized or disorganized? organized
Pink or blue? pink

Good morning, everyone!

Did not have a great workout this morning, as my apartment was freeeeezing! :sad1: Never thought I'd be working out indoors in my thermal outdoor running clothes! Looks like it is just one of those apartments where the heat is on, but it is not nearly hot enough to deal with single digit temperatures!

My new goal for this year is to find a new, higher paying job, so that I can move out of my ice box before I need to renew my lease in October so that next winter, I don't have to sleep under 8 blankets, wearing two pairs of pants, three shirts, and a hat. :furious:

But, I guess everything happens for a reason - if I was at a nicer job, I wouldn't be able to wear 8 million layers to work every day LOL

Hope everyone had a great W/I in this morning - it was a COLD one! I almost didn't want to take off my layers to step on the scale :rotfl:

I also hope everyone is fully taking advantage of National Peanut Butter Day! Yummmmmm

Tomorrow is National Opposite day!! Who knew there was such a day? It is also the day the first Winter Olympics began in 1924, the day the first televised presidential news conference occurred in 1961, and the day the first transcontinental telephone call was successfully completed in 1915.

Tonight, my friend wants to go out to dinner - this will be my first restaurant, sit-down meal at a place that isn't a chain, where I can order from a low-carb menu or something since I started to lose weight this time around. We're going to an Italian place - any suggestions on what to get? I know I'll be doing my trick of cutting the meal in half before I even get it - maybe in thirds if we do an appetizer. Just trying to figure out what is best. I love ALL Italian food, this is going to be a tough one lol

Do NOT put your life on HOLD waiting to do everything when you get to goal. Start living your life NOW!! :thumbsup2

Thanks! Will definitely do!

I am DONE WITH WINTER. It is 3 this morning. And more snow is coming tonight. With more arctic temps next week. We just don't have temps like this and it is getting ridiculous.

I AM SO WITH YOU! I actually started looking at jobs in California today just for the idea of getting out of this WINTER!!! Brrrrr!

PS: LOVED the circuit workout. Can't move today, but loved it!!

YAY! I'm so glad you liked it!

Hey. Doing battle with a cold I caught from my Mom who just went on a cruise...Don't know what I was thinking but I knew she wan'ts feeling good and I hadn't seen her for a few weeks and I was in the area taking back a trap.

I don't know, you have to keep your immune system tough right? Anyway it's not too bad but of course I have to work the next 4 days ugh. I was doing so well working out too darn it, doing more reps but not quite upping the weight ante yet. Wasn't losing any weight but you can't have everything I guess. I don't know-- I'm not losing weight yet I'm really not frustrated by it. Puzzled a bit, I've never had this kind of problem before but not upset. And like I said my strength is really good. I will come around eventually if I persist here. Well I have to go try to make myself look presentable even though I am the carrier of bubonic plague...:scared:

Oh thank you for volunteering to start your coaching gig early! :flower3:

You have been having a crazy winter -- and remember just a week or so ago you were happy for snow. ;) :rotfl: This is a good year to be an apartment because if you had a yard to take care of I'm sure there would be lots of plants to replace.
My pleasure. :) I really do think there are going to be a lot of plants lost and it makes me very sad. Sooner or later this weather has to break for good, right?:goodvibes

Kimberley--glad you liked the workout. :) And way to rub it in on the no snow shoveling.:rotfl:

Hi all! I'm back after a bit of an absence. I gained a bit of holiday pounds (sound familiar anyone?) but got my act together this week and am now down to my pre-holiday weight, woo-hoo!
Great job on getting down to that pre-holiday weight!

Molli--hang in there! 10 days is a lot of days, and definitely worth the effort to get back on track. :)

That's a great goal! And how about some kind of chicken dish for dinner? (Do you eat meat?) I am not a low carb person, but I think most Italian restaurants usually have chicken. If all else fails, have a salad and a tiny bit of pasta. You can either box up the left overs, or just leave them on your plate. I know that sounds wasteful, but if it is a problem to bring them home, then I personally think it is better to not. :goodvibes

Have fun!

Susan--feel better!

I had a killer workout today and feel back on track. :) We walked a ton while we were in South Carolina (miles every day), but this was the first hard workout I have gotten in, in about a week. I did 38 min on the elliptical, 35 min on the AMT, ran slowly for 40 min and walked for another 20. My achilles tendons are sore, but otherwise I feel great!

Hope everyone has a great evening. Stay warm!

QOTD--1/25/14 We are 3+ weeks into the New Year.
Do you think you have gotten "real" about making health choices or are you still struggling? If so, what are your struggles?
For folks who have been around awhile now (including me), how have you jump started your healthy choices?
For everyone--if it takes three weeks to establish a new habit, are you seeing new habits fall into place?

Woohoo, it's snowing. :( Ok, I am faking it. Broken record here, but done with the weather.

At some point today we are going to hit the Y, but will wait until the roads are a little better. Other than that, no big plans for today.

Have a great Saturday!

Good morning all! :goodvibes

The results page has been updated with all the PMs I have received so far. Remember the final weigh in for this month is Friday, January 31st -- almost a whole week away so lots of time to make progress. :cool2:

PS: LOVED the circuit workout. Can't move today, but loved it!!

Sounds awesome! :thumbsup2

Way to kick that holiday weight to the curb! :yay:

well my great month hit a BIG BRICK wall with today's WI :worried: :faint: I even got the most workouts in this week of all...but it's a kick in the pants that I'm not journaling...and even though my mind wants to say I'm almost on vaca that is not being on vaca....and so I need to make these 10 days count!

Bummer, Molli. Way to go on the workouts. It could be water retention as your body repairs itself. Or it could be the pre-vacation mindset. Lots of time to get yourself where you want to be before vacation. You can do it! :thumbsup2

This is one of those times that you just have to do the best you can with what you have -- see if a side of steamed veggies is an option, stick to foods that are processed the least, pick a tomato sauce over a cream sauce. One splurge meal isn't going to derail you completely as long as you get right back on plan the very next meal. You can do it! :thumbsup2

Hope you are feeling better soon, Susan. :flower3: The strength workouts seem like they are going well. It sounds like you are in a good place right now. I think you should hang out here and enjoy it a bit. :hippie:

Soon it will be spring and you will be happy you don't have to do yardwork. :sunny:

Way to go on the killer workout and thank you again for starting your coaching gig early! :thanks:

Organized or disorganized? disorganized, but trying to switch

There are quite a few of us who feel this way! :lmao:

Today I am doing my second to last long run before the Princess -- 12.5 miles on the indoor track. princess: Luckily the indoor track weather is closer to FL weather so I don't have to freeze outside for 4 hours. :rotfl:

Happy Saturday!

Hopefully things will start warming up again in your neck of the woods soon, Rose. :flower3:

I think for me getting real about health choices is doing the things that I know I should do consistently -- make good food choices, honest tracking and renewing my acquaintance with real portion sizes. That seems to be enough to help me reboot when I need to -- which is pretty much all the time. :rotfl:
