This is for the women out there (sorry guys, but you could ask your wives to answer :thumbsup2 ).

So if you were going to the US on your own, just you and your child (tween/teen). You were going for a long time, like 3 months and didn't know anyone in LA. You have a commitment one afternoon a week in West LA so can commute from a few places as it's only just that one afternoon a week.

You have two places you have narrowed it down to stay.

Option 1. Anaheim - where you are familiar, there are lots of touristy options available for you (bus tours, shuttles, Disney), you are about an hour away from the weekly afternoon commitment (by shuttle or maybe car), central to visits to San Diego in the south. Where you could walk to Garden walk, walk to DTD for dinner or lunch, walk around and exercise, pop to the parks, take a shuttle to the supermarket or shopping malls. You are not far from the beaches, Newport, Laguna etc.
You have a sporting program organized for your child 3 mornings a week about 20 minutes away or another 45 minutes away (which is possibly better run than the one 20 minutes, but not sure about that, just have a feeling).

Option 2 - West LA, where you are not familiar, don't know the area at all (but would become familiar I guess), think it's not far from shops and restaurants. Close to the weekly afternoon commitment (5-10 min shuttle ride). A bit unsure of how you will feel walking around at night on your own (have heard there are lots of homeless people in the area, may or may not be true). A longer way from places like San Diego and Disney for recreation. There is a sporting program for your child 3 mornings a week also, about 25 minutes away (This is the one 45 mins from Anaheim. Have a feeling this may be a better run program than the one near anaheim, but not sure of that, just a feeling). You've read reviews of the accommodation and whilst it's nice, that it can be loud apparently, particularly at night and on weekends with people partying and parking can be difficult, but it's a lovely place, but more residential.

Accommodation wise, both will be 2 bedroom, both with full kitchens, Anaheim with breakfast included, LA not. Both around the same price. Anaheim with 3 beds and pull out sofa (handy if friends come to USA and stay), LA with 2 beds only (no sofabed). Anaheim includes parking, LA does not (but both have carparks). Both with 2 bathrooms. Both have gyms. Anaheim room about 700sqft, LA 1000 sqft.

So to anyone out there, what would you do if it was you on your own with your child (or your wife with one of your kids). Where would you stay? I really need some help.

No other button in this poll :rotfl2: Sorry, it's either one or the other.

i picked anaheim as it's an area you are familiar with, have previously explored etc and are comfortable with :)

i also say go with the sporting commitment that is closest to this accomodation, just to go with ease of transport.

so... anaheim with closest sporting arrangements.

I agree with the others. Anaheim and go with the sport that's closest. Everything is nearby and it would be so much fun to live near Disneyland!

I voted option 3. definitely think you'll feel happier/safer/more at home in Anaheim.

As the course is only 1 morning a week then I don't think the longer commute from Anaheim will be a problem. But as the sporting program is 3 mornings a week I think you should go with the closer, 20 minute commute on that one.

I picked Anaheim, so then I could come and stay ;)

You are welcome Caroline! :thumbsup2

Thanks girls! :goodvibes Such a big decision. Different if it was for a week, but when it's for a while, you don't want to get stuck and wish you were in another place. :surfweb:

Thanks Andona :confused3

Ohhh, someone has picked Anaheim with the 45 minute away sporting program. This is something that I would love for him to get the opportunity to do. Such a big decision.

PS, the sport programs are the same sport, just two different places, run by different companies.

That was me. I figured that you would have enough time up your sleeves to do the additional travelling? 45 mins doesnot seem like that long to me,and superior coaching/programmes can be invaluable.

:thumbsup2 The sport is something we can decide on when there. To be honest, once I'm in a car, I don't care how far away something is. An extra 20 minutes each way for a superior program I don't think would bother me (which is just my assumption from the research and reading I've done, they are both good, but I think one may be a little better, more organised). But then after doing it for months, I may get over it and wish we were closer. Oh the pressure, of a decision.

The only thing I would add is,

1. How late at night is the once-a-week commitment? Is it easy enough to get back from if it's lateish?
2. Would there be much chance of getting to know people through the once-a-week commitment, and would you be close enough to be able to socialise with them occasionally?
3. Ditto with the sporting program?

I guess because living there is different to visiting Disney there lol, ie Dis probably won't be your focus (I know, I know, wash my mouth out with soap!!!), you definitely want to be somewhere safe though.

I went with Anaheim with the good sporting program for a couple of reasons! Anaheim is somewhere you are familiar with and how nice will it be to live so close to the parks! There are also so many options and attractions close that are so easily accessible! The other reason is I figure this will be a once in a lifetime type thing so why not make the most of it!:thumbsup2 Like you say, you are happy to drive so why not?!

Whichever you choose, I am sure you will both have the time of your lives!:cool1:

Oh Dis will be my focus, LOL. No, not all the time. But I've sort of pictured, popping into Carnation Cafe for lunch for example, or popping to the park to watch World of Colour or Fantasmic.

Good questions! :thumbsup2

1. The commitment is not late, maybe until 6.30pm or 8.30pm. So not too late to drive back to Anaheim.
2. No chance of meeting people or socialising through that.
3. Not sure about the sport, possibly, I don't know if the parents are involved or if it's a drop and run type thing and not sure if DS will make any friends, he may. In which case the closer one may be better from that standpoint.

Thanks Minnie Sue Oz :goodvibes :thumbsup2

I picked Anaheim, 45 min sporting program. I figure if you've got the car anyway whats an extra 20 mins? Are you doing any work/study/other commitments while over there? Or is it jus the West LA once a week program and sport three times a week? If thats all I'd say do the "better program".

Go with Anaheim. It's where your home away from home is; and it's where you want to hang out in the evenings.

I think you know deep down. Trust your gut.

Anaheim, good sport program. 45 mins isn't that far even to have a weekend catch up with newly made friends.

Are you going to hire a car for the whole time or just day by day.

Anaheim. Then visit both the sporting clubs when you get there unless they need an upfront commitment.

You are living all our dreams living at Disneyland. It will be easier for us to catch up with you. And you could always go exploring during the sporting commitment or check in on the disboards.

I am so excited for you. :cool1:

Now that is an awesome idea!!!!! Thanks for that suggestion! And I am going to do just that. I'll drive both routes, visit both places and see which fits. That is a super dooper idea :thumbsup2

I don't know about the car. If I'll get it for the whole time or maybe soon after we arrive. I think it may end up being more expensive hiring it three times a week than for the whole time. So I will see how we go when we get there. I'm actually a little terrified about driving on the wrong side of the road and in that city traffic! I haven't done that before.:scared1:

You'll be fine. The hardest bit is getting out of the rental car parking lot. Once you're on the road, it isn't all that bad.

I voted for 3. Better to be in a familiar area. Great idea to check out both programs when you get there.

I think your heart is saying Anaheim. You describe it as much safer and with it just being you and your DS this would appear to be a much more comfortable decision for you. It's also a great selling point to get family and friends to visit!

We all want the best for our children so the 45 min drive would be a no brainer for me. What's an extra 20 mins? I'd also check both programs out as AWIDY suggested.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for you both.
