What's up with rolls of coins?

I have a couple of DGDs who likely have no idea about coins...or any actual money. It's all plastic to them, They are the cash-less generation.
I had heard that over here the Mint is thinking about discontinuing copper change, meaning that only coins of a denomination of 5p and up are made, hence forth. Not sure about the accuracy of the reporting, though.

Quarters are great because my understanding is that if you keep them in your car and stop to get cookies at am/pm, no one knows and they don't count in the budget! (or the calorie count... and don't ask me how much they cost because I paid in quarters and it didn't count! - I do know it was 3 cookies for less than six quarters.)

My kids certainly know what cash is, even though they mostly use plastic. They work tipped positions, then hit up Bank of Mom to cash them out for larger bills (gee, thanks!). They do sometimes make cash deposits at an ATM. It was kind of funny a few months ago--DD20 had gotten a speeding ticket, and needed to pay her lawyer in cash. I suggested she go tot the ATM and withdraw the $300 or whatever. She was dumbfounded--you can DO that? Um, yeah, Sweetie!

Just picked up a roll of quarters today. Travelling and the hotel washer/dryers are quarters only. I've stayed at a hotel where it was app driven, this one doesnt.

I have one in grad school in Boston with washer/dryer in the basement. Apparently banks in Boston don’t have coins, so whenever she comes home we load her up, I have 4 rolls for her right now. Otherwise she has to go to laundromats that have change machines for customers.

My 13 year old child knows about currency because I've taught them. They love it when we travel abroad because they can look at the different coloured and sized money. They even downloaded an exchange rate app to their phone to check when the rates are good - They recently told me to buy Euros because it was a good rate!

Pressed Pennies?
Sadly, the pressed penny machines at WDW are all credit card now. Gone are the days of eating a canister of mini M&Ms so you can have the perfect container for a collection of 2 quarters and for every shiny new penny. The credit card machines take half the fun out of it for me :(.

A guy at work owns a small apartment building. He said the payback was less than a month.

He no longer had to deal with the damage from theft and pay for the near daily repairs to the coin boxes on the appliances. He no longer had to collect the coins daily. He no longer had to pay the bank coin handling fees. He no longer had to stock the change machines. He no longer had to deal with the damage from theft and pay the weekly repairs to the change machines.

He said the conversion and ongoing cost was well worth the fee paid.

This just sounds bizarre to me! Where the heck is this small apartment building located that the washer and dryers coin boxes were having near daily damage to the point of needing repairs!?! My kids (and niece and nephew) have all lived in apartment buildings and none of them have ever noticed any damage like you described. All I can think is, if the tenants are destroying the coin boxes, I can only imagine what they are doing to the inside of their apartments.

It's also strange that the guy supplied a change machine in his small apartment building. My kids have lived in 3 different apartment buildings, 2 small and 1 large and NONE of them supplied a change machine. It was on you to get your own change.

Weird about the Boston banks!! We live an hour north of Boston and for almost a year now, our bank limits people to only 2 rolls of quarters at a time! I've been thinking that was weird, but after hearing about your poor kid, I guess I am thankful that I can at least get 2!!

This is my experience as well. We travel a LOT here in the states and it's probably 50-50 on what's available although there's probably more coin ones then the app or credit card option.

This thread and the threads where people say that they haven't used cash in a year (or years) always make me scratch my head. Usually, the people that post are also people who proclaim to travel a lot and I can never figure out how that works. At least in the states!

We do at least two, 2-3 week traveling vacations throughout the country. There is simply no way you would ever travel without cash. Many small mom and pop places to eat are sometimes cash only, in Arizona many of the Navajo craft markets are cash only, we have found ourselves several times where for some reason a system crashes and they can't take credit cards, cash only, we stopped at a huge flea market one trip, and it was pretty much cash only and then of course doing laundry is often cash only too! I'm sure there are more examples but those are just off the top of my head from recent travels.

We used to use them in the casino and at the arcade. Now it sounds like you can’t use them for anything. Maybe to pay someone you don’t want to pay. I had friend who once paid a landlord in pennies. She needed a wheelbarrow to get them to the door!

Boston banks have coins - how else could you cash a check that is for $74.25? Or are you talking about rolls of coins only? They should have some on hand, even if it is just from another person's deposit.
