We have a neighbor or someone putting their trash in other families trash bins. Dealing with it.

In our neighborhood we have choices of trash can sizes...small, medium, large. All different prices, of course. Picked up once a week. We have a medium. Some people pay for two large cans! If we have extra trash, we can put extra bags on the street, with a special sticker, that we pay a hefty amount for....I think it’s $12 .... so yes, if my can is full because another person added their trash, it would bother me.

If a neighbor asks me, or even slips in a bag right before the truck appears, it would not bother me.

If it’s happening to several people in your neighborhood, maybe someone has a surveillance camera that has already caught the guilty party!

I'll never forget some jerk dumped a butchered deer carcass in the dumpster of a gift shop I worked at. It was awful. That's when we finally had to get a lock and key.
We had a large dumpster at work and every week someone would put all their cardboard boxes in it. This was from imported product that they sold at swap meets. Their name and address was still on the mailing label. I caught him one morning and told him he had to take all his trash out or I would call the police. He dared me so I did. He wasn't very happy when the police showed up at his door to escort him back to the dumpster to take his trash out.

We arrived at our beach place one weekend to find our large city assigned trash can missing from the side of our house. Asked our next door neighbors if we could toss a bag in theirs since ours was missing-they said sure. They had just moved in the beginning of the season. We call city hall and they will replace for 75.00 so we might want to check around the neighborhood-gave us the serial number-turns out it’s next door.
They would have had to go to our side yard and wheeled it over to their side-out of our view. We just wheeled it back and my husband spray painted our house number on it. I’m a pretty laid back person, but my blood pressure goes up just remembering this :sad2:
Similar thing here too. Called the trash company to have a third barrel added to our account (and bill!) and they delivered it a few weeks later in front of our house. But then it disappeared before we could take it back by the garage. A while later we started nosing around and found it in the back of the house across the street from us! People really can be cheeky.

Every time I have even a passing thought about moving to town, I come to the Dis and read one of these threads. Just today, I have reasons 9982 and 9983 why to stay right there in my little corner of the woods. I do not know nor do I care what the people around me do with their trash or their dog poop. My can stays at the end of my driveway and we take the trash to it through the week. If somebody wants to hunt it down to put a bag in it, so be it.

We pay for pick up. So much for each can. And if there is extra, the county will come by and grab it.

I cannot imagine even considering putting cameras on my garbage cans!
This
I could never survive live happily in a neighborhood lol

The trash can isn't an issue here. But everyone is in a huff because they are cracking down on what is in your recycle bin.
They pick up the recycling can every two weeks. 2 weeks ago I got a warning tag on my recycling bin because I had a styrofoam egg carton in my recycle can.. Styrofoam isn't recyclable. Today I got a "Great Job" tag on my can. But this time I was home to see what they are doing. Instead of the usual huge garbage truck with a claw to pickup the car., they have a much smaller truck, and 2 guys dump your can in the back and sort through your recyclables to see what you have in there. Most folks got a warning label on my street.

These threads are always fun..

My opinion would be who cares? Unless you pay per garbage bag or by weight. That would change things. Since you don’t mention that, I don’t think it’s the case.

I really, really, really am glad I don’t live anywhere where this is considered an issue.

I agree- don't care who puts trash in the can- once it is out at the curb it is fair game.

But what if said garbage bag stinks up your garbage can? Or their bag breaks open and now their dirty cat litter is inside your can? I don't know about you, but we keep our cans in our garage and I hose them out periodically to avoid them getting gross and stinky. So I would be none too pleased about cleaning up someone else's mess.

I would never keep trash cans inside my garage- that is just nasty.

Is it common in the USA for HOA to deal with trash? Up here it's the municipal government. It's paid by your taxes same as street cleaning.

It is not common depending on your area- here it is part of your taxes- they pick up 4 times a week (2 times a week trash, once recycling and once yard waste). You can put out 10 pails and a couch for pickup and they would take all the trash.

Well lots of people are just more laid back. They probably also don't care if someone managed to hop on their wifi or use their cable services for free either.

I gave my neighbor our wifi password so they could use it and not have to buy their own.

OP Here,

The issue with the garbage is they fill it till its full then I can't put my trash in it, and I'm the one paying for it. We to have if the lid on the bin doesn't close all the way they will drive right by. So I don't think I should be the one to have to deal with my trash when I pay the bill. The thing is it not just one trash bag, it several bags.

As long as they didn't interfere with my garbage, I probably wouldn't really be upset about it. If I had room left over, I really don't see much harm in somebody putting stuff in my garbage can. That said, I DO think it is very tacky if they are not paying for their own pickup, but it not something that would upset me too much.

Years ago, when I was teaching we had a teacher who would use a school dumpster instead of paying for his own garbage pickup. I noticed him doing it but I never said anything to anybody.

You are a beautiful person and I would certainly do that for a friend. Naturally, wifi is password protected for most smart people so only using it as an example of a service that could be stolen. I'm am happy to freely give to someone what I have, but I don't like it being taken without at least a discussion.

And, yes, it IS theft of services.
It is not covered by county taxes.
That trash pickup doesn't come free. Each person pays for it... Either individually or with their monthly HOA fees.
It is the same as trying to hi-jack cable or any other utility or service.

Thank you! I've been sitting here wondering if all these people who would "have no problem with it" would be fine if they were stealing cable or tapping into their electric. I mean as long as they could still watch their shows or turn on their own lights it shouldn't be a big deal, right?

My dad used to rent out mobile homes. He had like 8 of them. Every so often he would go over to check on them or collect rent and find that one would have had their electricity turned off and would be using their neighbor’s. They would have extension cords rigged up. First off, it is a fire hazard and second illegal (because it’s a fire hazard).

My point being, it’s not really the same thing.

WiFi, I wouldn’t care really. Or cable. It would be harder for someone to tap in to our satillite though.

But I do think most of us were thinking a bag or two that wasn’t affecting our pick up. Someone adding some to mine really wouldn’t effect me one way or the other.

If I was the OP, I just wouldn’t put my can out until the morning of pick up.

I'd be real, real careful with that one. Your IP address could get used for things you never dreamed of.

Very true. You may trust your neighbor but if they have a friend, etc over and someone downloads something "questionable", you will be the one on the hook. It would come back to your IP address and would be difficult to prove someone else did it. While it's great that you want to help out your neighbor, I would think twice about this one.

Nope, it's absolutely the same thing. It is a service being paid for by the OP and being stolen by someone else. It is also illegal. Theft of service is a crime.

Putting a bag of garbage in your can will not burn your house down. I just don’t see it as the same level but whatever works for you.

You must have missed the part where I said I hose them out and keep them clean. The garbage is also bagged, we don’t throw it in there loose. It’s better than having the cans on the side of the house where they are viewable from the street - not accessible in the winter, and looks trashy. No pun intended.

My issue has been with people who are apparently moving and they come and dump all of their stuff in the alley by the trash and recycle bins. Sometimes even blocking the garage door with their unwanted crap. It's pretty mind boggling to me that people are so inconsiderate. I also had someone recently trim a bunch of tree branches and stack them all next to my back gate that accesses the alley... to the point I could barely open my gate. Really, people??

Exactly. I mean... We have city trash and water service. We should just let anyone come and use our hose right? Neighbor needs to wash his car (without asking) because he's too cheap to buy a hose/his broke? SURE! Pull right up right?! No.

Someone is out of space in their can and asks to use ours? Sure, no problem. Someone is out of space in their can and takes it upon themself to use utilize our property (we have to buy our own cans)? Rude.

Did you miss the part where the person is filling the OP's can, to the point wgere she can't add anything else? And that she pays for her trash service? I know we always have one last bag we toss in the can the morning of trash day. I'd be pissed if someone prevented me from using a service I pay for.
