We’ll Use Any Excuse To Go During the Holiday Season. Another food-focused trip report. 11/28-12/6 (Complete)

12/5 Epcot Area Resorts, Part 4

We walked over to the Swan Reserve for a quick peek at their decorations. I love the poinsettias at the sign.

Here is the lobby tree. Simple but very pretty.

We took a peek upstairs at the lounge that was also simply but tastefully decorated.

We then walked over to the Dolphin to check out their tree.

After all our walking around, it was time for lunch so we headed to the Fountain. They had a homemade-looking gingerbread house on display.

Here’s a close-up. Very cute! Reminds me of making gingerbread houses with my mom as a child.

We decided to share two entrees. First we had the Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese with fries: Braised Buffalo Chicken, Colby Cheese and Blue Cheese Crumbles served on Toasted French Country Bread.

CkY0UT46MhW1vDhmQBh-8XNBKiglJiqNn9oFWPKRtejrq1g6dgFATD4OKyTdfBE4RkbznjuFFGjHquGtyfAHCC32_HytDVM5nSVI8IF92VhAIIOvU-BLkZbv5qpxiNiqGlEToF91f5s8H6A7DnQA69o

This sandwich was very tasty. The bread was perfectly grilled. It was more of a buffalo chicken sandwich with some cheese as opposed to a grilled cheese with chicken but very good! The fries were fine but nothing special.

We also ordered a Fountain Signature Burger: Two 4 oz. Angus Burgers, Smoked Bacon, Avocado-Bacon Spread, Caramelized Onion, Roma Tomato and American Cheese served on a Sesame Brioche Bun.

This was a very good burger. It was much better than the one we had a couple years ago at Beaches & Cream. However, we’d rank it below the D-Luxe burgers or the Stack Burger at Steakhouse 71.

This is our second time dining at the Fountain and we really enjoy it. We’ve never tried their ice cream but their food and shakes are very good. Also, the service both times was outstanding.

After our lunch we walked to the Epcot Skyliner and then started our tour of the Skyliner resorts.

Our first stop was the Riviera resort. This is another beautiful resort.

12/5 (continued) Skyliner Resorts

From the Riviera, we walked over to the Caribbean Beach Resort. They don’t have a main central tree but lots of wreaths and smaller trees, with fun tropical decor.

We hopped on the skyliner and headed over to the Art of Animation resort. The white tree with splashes of color is really cool.

I like how the white wreaths also had ribbons that matched the background colors at the check in desk.

We decided we needed a snack and headed into Everything Pop! to try the coconut haupia dessert that I had seen on the online menu. We couldn’t find it we figured it had sold out. Since it was also on the online menu for Landscape of Flavors, we headed back over to Art of Animation. We also couldn’t find it anywhere there. Finally I asked a Cast Member who informed me it hadn’t been available for a while. Odd how they don’t update the online menus. So, we settled on a favorite from last year, the Oh Deer Cupcake, a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting and a chocolate ganache center.

IMG_9730.jpg

This wasn't as good as last year's cupcake. The peanut butter buttercream was tasty and the chocolate cake was good but there wasn't enough ganache in the middle. After our treat, we took the Skyliner back to Hollywood Studios where our car was parked.

Up next….an unexpected detour.

12/5 (continued) An Unexpected Detour

As we departed the Skyliner at Hollywood Studios to head back to our car, I jokingly said to my DH, “hey, I’m a passholder, I could actually go into Hollywood Studios just to take pictures of the holiday decor.” He responded, “Why not? Go ahead and I’ll wait out here.” So, I went through the tapstile and walked around for about fifteen minutes taking photos of all the fun decor. Here are the highlights:

This was really fun and cool to see all the quirky decor.

After taking a bunch of pictures, I rejoined my DH in the parking lot. It was tempting though to grab a snack or ride something but I didn’t want to make him wait too long. In retrospect, I should’ve grabbed a Jack Jack Num Num cookie! We then decided to check out the decor and animals at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Up next...exploring the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

I'm loving all the holiday decor pictures! It's fun to see all the different themes at each resort.

As we were stopped to take the picture, a CM yelled “excuse me” over to us. I thought for sure we were going to be in trouble for not heading right out of the park. But, no, when we responded, “Yes?”, she said, “would you guys like some free popcorn?” and handed us a box! It’s funny, we’ve NEVER bought Disney popcorn and were just saying earlier in the day that we should try it sometime.
We got free end-of-the-night popcorn at AK on our last trip! It really is the best popcorn :)
‘Ohana still is a must do for us though and I’m already planning on booking an ADR for April (but no grizzly bear claws that morning).
I've still never been to 'Ohana! We're going on our next trip. I can't wait to try to noodles everyone raves about.
So, we decided it was time for a field trip and headed back to our rental car to go to the original Gideon’s in the East End Market. We figured it would take less than 1.5 hours and we’d get to see a new place.
Such a good idea! Glad you didn't have to wait in that line to get those treats, they look amazing.

I'm loving all the holiday decor pictures! It's fun to see all the different themes at each resort.
We also love how the holiday music matches the themes as well.
I've still never been to 'Ohana! We're going on our next trip. I can't wait to try to noodles everyone raves about.
It really is our favorite! The first time I had the noodles in 2010 I didn't see what the hype was about but ever since then, I do! Funny, my DS-25 is thinking about joining us in April and he said "actually the whole reason I'm going is just to eat at 'Ohana" and he really isn't someone who cares that much about food!

Oh my gosh, your holiday decor pictures are fabulous! I would love to spend a day doing the Skyliner resorts next time I am in Disney for the holidays.

12/5 (Continued) Stopping by Animal Kingdom Lodge

Since we had some time before our dinner ADR, we decided to stop by to see the decorations at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

The tree is spectacular here as well.

We stopped by to see the Gingeraffe and Debra the Zebra. Just amazing gingerbread creations.

The tree here is quite nice too, just not as large.

We spent quite a bit of time observing the animals on the savannah. There were a lot of them out and about.

After our time on the savannah, we headed to the Caribbean Beach Resort to see if we could maybe get in a little early for our ADR at Sebastian’s Bistro.

Up next…first time eating at Sebastian’s Bistro, will it be the last?

12/5 (continued) Dinner at Sebastian’s Bistro

We arrived at Caribbean Beach at about 5:00 but our ADR wasn’t until 5:45. I tried to modify it in the app but since we were within the 2 hour window it wouldn’t let me change anything. We spoke with the hostess and asked if there was any chance we could get in early. She said she’d “make a note”. It was beautiful out so we enjoyed the weather and watched some turtles swimming in the water.

We received the text that our table was ready at 5:50. So much for getting in a little early. There were many empty tables as we were being seated so it must have been a staffing issue or perhaps that they only wanted to seat us at a two-top.

As we entered the restaurant the smell of fish was very overpowering which surprised me as fish is just a small part of the menu.

We were seated at a very small two top table. The server took our drink order and explained the menu to us. He didn’t mention the add-ons but I knew coconut shrimp was an add-on so I requested an order of that.

A different server brought out the spice necklace salad, pull apart rolls, and coconut shrimp. He did a great job explaining each of the dishes. He was very obviously trying to provide excellent service.

My DH absolutely loved this salad. I thought it was good with a lot of unique flavors. It was my DH’s favorite thing he ate besides dessert.

Buttery House-baked Pull-apart Rolls with Guava Butter and Caramelized Onion Jam

kISZfog-CCT8U5avsNuyqDkhzBPBHHuecEYTaIZ6nKVWi9gubX0BRUaFFy24l3AfSjgsrKR9oQFuE4vPrrSq1d2cIzFHaIjqx12RT6iHoPBOYXaLsUhxioseAAF0zWFlUPpZ3lwAliN4dvnQsYM5eiw

The pull apart rolls were very good and the onion jam was really tasty. We didn’t get a ton of flavor from the guava butter. Also, the Mickey shaped parmesan biscuit was dry and flavorless.

As you can see from this photo, our table was so small that the server had a hard time fitting everything on the table and this was just the starters. I do think it’s odd to have a family style meal and seat people at a table that is way too small to accommodate all the dishes. It definitely detracted from the experience to be balancing plates on the edges.

Fried Coconut Shrimp with Creamy Chipotle Dipping Sauce

These were pretty good, mostly tasted like the coconut batter. It was actually my favorite thing I ate besides dessert. Didn’t get a ton of flavor from the chipotle dipping sauce.

Our second server then had to clear plates to bring out the mains and sides. He again gave great descriptions of everything.

Entrée Sides: Taste of the Caribbean and Harvest of the Caribbean are both served with Cilantro Rice and Beans, Vegetable Curry, and Grilled Seasonal Vegetables

Cilantro Rice and beans were okay. I didn’t notice a ton of cilantro flavor. They seemed a bit under-seasoned.

nx1DpPiBW2eiTZJoouLeassVQaRe7meqD4Hq0k-_0Naw1u-gsSkM8rbrHaXoexQGcDveF3Bee8bB0nsYXUgRDqTX1CivpKpLqzjZcHgUIdA9weLpxOaktDvdEPFh56JxzqTMpK5LV5ZpQSxFsGRt3X8

The vegetable curry was described by a couple vloggers as really just vegetables stewed in a tomato broth with not much curry flavor. We however felt this had a lot of curry flavor and really didn’t care for it.

JwfcINI1ZcYtNdcNfRsJQxLbOunMyWDeuQKwvB8VmM9bYOub71N10KBl8WiRqbUykzMcJ3CkIpkSHU_VDO2Es6kubGf-KToMLwolQmnaVCy5W3fis91zUtej0S-O4m20QFmugalejH1n99DYw1t6Xrg

The broccolini was heavily smoked. I liked it but it was very smoky.

Taste of the Caribbean: Oven-roasted Citrus Chicken, Slow-cooked Mojo Pork with Mango Sambal, Grilled Chili-rubbed Beef with Mojito Relish, and Sustainable Baked Fish with Veracruz Sauce

jRxh413mtj9iLsIP4C3LYXl6ZMDjVKtaaFgzCdrY7HD3VMf5HLFBqVR38wALEzcGP07m4bw36xgCbgt5GlW5cwe1H1F-5iB_QcyKE5IQu1txNVwhMFbZn6oE0Rm2N9gW9YRjS4LiSj0gJPWX2ZtY0R0

Unfortunately we felt all of these items were under-seasoned and bland. The mango in the mango sambal seemed under ripe so it didn’t add any sweetness or flavor to the pulled pork. The white fish was flavorless. The chicken wasn’t warm and we didn’t taste any “citrus”. We didn’t taste any chili on the chili-rubbed beef. Overall it was just very bland mediocre food which truly surprised us. We really expected a lot of flavor from this meal and it was just overall lacking.

This was great as always (we’ve ordered it before at Banana Cabana). I know a lot of people say it’s better than ‘Ohana. And, while our portion size was definitely better than the one we got earlier in the week at ‘Ohana, we honestly don’t notice a lot of difference. Both are very tasty. Unfortunately for me by this point in the week I was just way too full to have more than one spoonful. My DH got to eat all the rest and was quite happy with that.

So, our first time at Sebastian’s Bistro wasn’t great. We expected a lot more from this meal. I know many people say it’s better than ‘Ohana but based on this experience we couldn't disagree more. Perhaps it was just an off night but between the fish smell, the tiny table and the mostly bland food we won’t be coming back any time soon. Service, the salad, rolls, and dessert were good but beyond that there wasn’t much to recommend it.

Up next…checking out the Boardwalk at night

12/5 (continued) Boardwalk Area at Night

After dinner, we drove back to Hollywood Studios parking lot and then walked over to the Boardwalk. I wanted to get some nighttime pictures of the Epcot resort area and also the pretty lighted trees at the Swan and Dolphin.

As we finished taking pictures at the Swan, I saw that it was 7:55 and I said to my DH, “hey do you think we can make it to the Boardwalk in time to see Orange Bird come out on the hour?” He said, “No but we can try.” So we powerwalked all the way over to the Boardwalk, rushed up the stairs and got there with one minute to spare!

The Boardwalk tree is even more beautiful at night.

We decided to take a walk around Crescent Lake. It is so beautiful at night.

Eventually we decided to take a friendship boat from the Yacht Club back to Hollywood Studios so we could head back to our hotel.

As I looked through all my postings covering Dec. 5, I realized what a jam packed day it was. During this day we visited the following locations:

Boardwalk (twice, day and night) and had breakfast at the deli
Yacht Club
Beach Club
Swan (twice, day/night)
Dolphin and had lunch at the Fountain
Swan Reserve
Riviera
Caribbean Beach (twice, day and night when we had dinner at Sebastian’s)
Art of Animation (twice, the second time when we went back for the snack)
Pop Century
Hollywood Studios (for me to take pictures)
Animal Kingdom Lodge
Jambo House

It turned out to be one very full day and we reached our goal of seeing the decorations in every resort over the course of the trip.

It was a record setting day for steps at 34,302. My iWatch move ring reached 1200 move calories and 229 minutes of exercise.

Food cost: $175.16

12/6 Final Day (Part 1)

We started our final day with our favorite breakfast on property, Boma! Here’s my first plate: goat cheese scrambled eggs, ham with Boma sauce, bacon, tots, grilled asparagus, one sausage link and the real reason I love this place: pecan sticky bun.

YNcqN3kjaDxwFWUUa_4METn4u-zvLdLjSmAmDPPWHHAoMrxwAiMml4CjSaDFhD2NoSlhlQmwYv2TM3vLRTsXP4-d9YdV9DLuUMseSRclLvW_1TMkLugbR9FQjJqF-lLzghiG6XPAbK-Th_LzjflWreU

Everything on my plate was delicious. I loved every item!

My DH’s first plate: ham, pecan sticky bun, bacon, tots, eggnog bread pudding and a pre-made omelet.

He really enjoyed everything on his plate with the exception of the pre-made omelet, which he said was just okay. He loves the tots at Boma!

My second plate: more bacon, tots, another sausage and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was the only new item and it was just okay, a little dry.

My DH’s second plate: ham with Boma sauce, tots, and an apple pastry. The apple pastry was the only new thing on his plate. He really liked it but he’s a big fan of fruit filled pastries.

Since this was the end of our week, we didn’t really have a huge amount of room in our bellies so that was the extent of our choices at Boma. Next time, we’re going to schedule this meal earlier in the week!

After our meal, we decided to head over to Animal Kingdom since it was the first day that the Annual Passholder magnets were available for pick-up. My DH waited outside the gates again as I made my way to get my magnets.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day so I took the opportunity to take a few more pictures of the holiday decorations as I made my way to Dinoland to pick up my magnets.

After getting the goods, I returned to my DH and we headed to Disney Springs to enjoy one last day in beautiful Florida weather.

Up next…an afternoon snack and then a new to us quick service dinner before heading to the airport.

We love Boma too! My daughters were begging to go there for breakfast again on our next trip. We couldn’t fit that in but we’re going for dinner instead.
I'm always tempted to try the dinner there again. We went for dinner in either 2006 or 2010, can't remember which and it wasn't our favorite. I see such great reviews now though, maybe next year! We're getting breakfast there again in April.

12/6 Final Day (Part 2)

We walked around Disney Springs for a bit and then decided it was time for an afternoon snack. We headed over to Everglazed Donuts and picked up two donuts.

Coconut Delight - caramel iced donut, toasted coconut, chocolate and caramel icing

XzqjurCVGFxd81fixwQhUP7ktY1YFoLyV7k0U0UbipbNAcS0sqz473P-zzHui-pyE0nGhWfVQJM6VMfWQA7QbsIc9l-aYOyxmtnbm1cmM-8_x2KHurz9PkOt68RYBb2gXMT6LDV4ukL2SW3cqGMx_JQ

This was really good. It had a nice caramel and coconut flavor without being overly sweet.

Brooklyn Blackout - chocolate glazed donut topped with mini chocolate chips and chocolate cookies
fJ7KlLgO3toZEIpANvOSE4RbR9S6C0lfHdhtyVaVtDfeR25eGtkNf0sOvzwLQmr1CzlFsrmQHapgxd_IupognzWHc6g4GxELIDdzJFLnC4yMh79sBWQmLJavtfdDUadlMJVnfdGEg31yoV8wnZ17tjo

This was very rich and very sweet. We do find that the “Super Funky” donuts on their menu are a bit too much. Definitely not a breakfast option for us but makes a decent sweet afternoon treat. I would get the Coconut Delight one again. I don’t think I’ll get the Brooklyn Blackout anytime soon though. Just too rich for me.

After a few more laps around Disney Springs, we decided to take the boat to Port Orleans French Quarter and walk around the Sassagoula River.

It was getting close to time for us to head to the airport but we decided to get an early dinner at Sassagoula Floatworks. We weren’t terribly hungry after the Boma breakfast and Everglazed donut snack so we decided to share a bowl of gumbo. Our server asked us if we wanted the rice on the side. We really didn’t care either way so we just said yes.

This does not make for a great picture but we both thought this was absolutely delicious! It had a nice heat to it, full of flavor, and a great final meal for our trip. At least we ended on a high note. Sadly we had no room in our bellies for dessert or a last order of beignets, poor planning on our part.

We then made our way to the airport to turn in our rental car and take our flight home, which thankfully was on time and uneventful.

Total steps: 23,318
Food cost: $110.57

This was yet again a phenomenal trip. We had such a great time in the parks as well as at all of the resorts and Disney Springs. Our hotel accommodations were excellent and most of our food choices were very good as well.

I’ll do one or two more posts highlighting our favorites from this trip.

Your holiday pictures are wonderful! We’ve only been once around that time (a very last minute trip to catch the final Osborne Holiday Lights) and I wish I’d known at the time to go see all the resort decorations.

Your Boma breakfast had me drooling. That was Sean’s and my departure breakfast on our last trip. He went heavy on Simba waffles and tots and I loved the ham/mustard sauce, grilled tomatoes and asparagus, and the goat cheese eggs. So yummy!

Thank you again for sharing your trip and lovely photos 🙂

Thank you so much! This was only our second time going during the holidays and it's so much fun! We have Boma breakfast scheduled for mid-trip in April, hoping we may have more room for yumminess!

DH and I finally put together our rankings of our food specifically from our experiences on this trip.

Here's our best to worst ranking of Table Service meals from this trip.
1Tony's Townsquare
2Olivia's Cafe
3'Ohana
4Boma (breakfast)
5Yak n Yeti
6Via Napoli
7Jock Lindsey's
8Sebastian's Bistro

Very surprising that Tony's and Olivia's ousted 'Ohana from it's usual top spot. Via Napoli also slipped a bit. The only places that we felt were not actually good were Jock Lindsey's and Sebastian's Bistro. 1-5 on this list were all very good!

Here's our best to worst ranking of Quick Service meals:
1Capt Cooks
2Regal Eagle
3D-Luxe Burger
4Sassagoula Floatworks
5The Fountain
6Eight Spoon Cafe
7Gasparilla
8Lunching Pad

Again, the only one of this list we wouldn't do again is the Lunching Pad. 1-7 were all very good to excellent.

Up next..breakfast and snack/dessert rankings.

Here's our best to worst rankings for quick service breakfast treats:

1Scat Cat Cafe Beignets
2Gaston's Cinnamon Roll
3Kringla Bakeri Schoolbread
4Boardwalk Deli Hot Cocoa Croissant
5Roaring Fork Grizzly Bear Claw
6Kusafiri Totchos & Guava Pastry

The top 4 were all delicious! The Grizzly Bear Claw was tasty but way too heavy and we thought the totchos and guava pastry were just okay.

Here's our ultimate list of sweet treats (best to worst):

1Gideon's Pipistrello cake
2Gideon's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup cake
3Gideon's carrot cake
4Sebastian's Bread Pudding
5Tamu Tamu Pineapple Crisp Sundae
6Plaza Ice Cream - Peppermint Brownie Sundae
7Bavaria - Linzer cookie
8'Ohana Bread Pudding
9The Ganachery Gingerbread Pecan Toffee
10Gideon's Banana Bread Chocolate Chip cookie
11Holiday Hearth - apple crumb cake
12Holiday Hearth - chocolate toffee brittle
13Holiday Hearth - Salted Caramel Spaceship earth cookie
14Everglazed Toasted Coconut Donut
15Landscape of flavors - Deer Holiday Cupcake

20Scat Cat Cafe - Hot Cocoa Beignets
21Nochebuena - spiced chocolate cookie
22Contempo Cafe - Kitchen Sink Cookie

Final Tallies, Thoughts & Future Plans

Overall this was another fantastic trip. We ended up logging 204,499 steps, averaging over 25,000 steps a day. Our total food cost for 8 full days was $1114.03 which I paid entirely with a redemption card or Disney Gift cards that I had purchased averaging 10% off.

With a Southwest sale and leftover credits, a discounted rental car, tickets & hotel from UT, and paying as much as possible with discounted gift cards, the 8 night trip cost us $4019.33. This also includes airport parking, Genie+ for 3 days, ILL$ for me for Tron, FoP and Guardians, and the Care for Giants tour. I was hoping to stay under $5k, so I think we did very well!

We’re very excited for our 2024 Florida road trip in 38 days. We’ll be driving down spending 3 days in Ormond Beach, 10 days in Orlando (4 with our adult sons joining us), 5 days at Cocoa Beach, 5 days at Bradenton Beach, 5 days in Fanning Springs State park in a cabin, 3 days in Charlotte and 3 days in Lancaster, PA with a few one day travel stops in between. I plan on doing a full trip report in the Community Board, like I did last year.

We’ve also been discussing 2025 already and my DH said the other day, “Why don’t we just spend a month in Orlando next year, since that’s where you really want to be?” Not sure if he was joking or not, but it sounds like a great plan to me! Truth be told, he enjoys it (almost) as much as I do! We’ve decided to go next year for the month of March. We’re going to convert his tickets for this April to an AP since it will still be good next March. Toying with staying in a VRBO but it’s so hard to tell from reviews what’s good and what isn’t, might just spend the month in a suite at Residence Inn, Flamingo Crossings. We’re never in our room anyways so a comfy bed, sitting area, and small kitchen is all we need. (And, if you know of a clean, quiet, reasonably priced VRBO property, let me know!)

That’s all for now! Thank you for following along and hopefully you’ll read my next reports too!

This sounds like a very successful trip! It's awesome you were able to stick to your budget for an 8 day trip. Will you go back to WDW when you're in Orlando on your road trip? Sounds like a great time!

Thank you so much for your great report! I was at Olivia's for breakfast on my Christmas trip, and if I remember correctly the tree was in the lobby area across the walkway from the restaurant. I like OKW and thought maybe I should stay there sometime when I have days to swim or explore. It was in 2020 during covid, so things might be different now. There weren't any gingerbread decorations that year. :(
