Pre-trip Planning & Booking:
So sorry for the delay. Got back about a month ago and had to make it through the holidays! Anyhoo…So glad you are joining me on my pixie dust trip with my mom…the greatest lady ever! If you’ve read any of my previous trip reports than you know that I love spoiling my nieces/nephews and my mom. Okay pretty much everybody. This trip is no different! While on my annual trip with my friends in September, I started planning my trip with my mom pre-Christmas. After playing the resort switch game, I decided to stay some place new. It has always been my dream to stay at the Grand Floridian main building during Christmas time but alas budget would not allow it. Though I’ve been to Disney more than 25 times; I think this trip was #26, I haven’t stayed at all the resorts and it is my mission to do so. So this trip I decided on Contemporary Resort. Though happy with my choice, I kept looking at photos and blogs about Grand Floridian. We stayed in one of the garden buildings during December before (in fact another surprise trip for mom) and she loved it. So what is a girl to do??? You guessed it…split stay! Turns out I could swing main building Grand Floridian for part of the stay so I got on with reservations and made the change. We would be checking into Contemporary tower for our first 2 nights than switching to the Grand Floridian main building club level for our last 3 nights. With not much time left, I quickly began the task of trying to reserve ADRs and fastpasses.
My mom was only told we were staying at Contemporary. The switch was a surprise for her. I like surprises remember. In fact, I had one planned for everyday. It was hard keeping the secrets but I knew my mom loved the daily surprises so much last trip; and I only slipped up a couple of times. The first surprise I had for her was flying first class. I have never flown first class and it’s been years since mom has so I wanted to experience it with her. She wanted to take 2 bags for herself but refused to let me pay for checking a second bag and was insisting on carrying it. I didn’t want her to and also like magical express to deal with luggage so I had to tell a little fib. Since we can check 2 (maybe 3) bags per person with first class, I had to come up with a good lie. I told her that my boss flies often and was sent 2 for 1 coupons for luggage and gave me a couple. Yup…she bought it! Also, she knows that since I have a usairways credit card that I can check in at the first class counter at the airport so she wouldn’t be suspicious there either. I checked us in online the day before and noticed that she had TSA pre-check. I was nervous about this cause it meant she would have her boarding pass in her hand for awhile and she might notice the first class designation. I’ll have to figure something out at the airport to keep the secret. Haha! On with the trip!

Departure Day & Contemporary Check-in (12/06/2014):
So I knew my mom wouldn’t want a super early flight so I chose an 8am flight (I usually leave at 6am). My sister picked me up about 5:30am and we headed to my mom’s house to get her. A quick goodbye to my dad…well not so quick for mom. They’ve been married for over 53 years and she hates leaving him. She had to double check he knew where everything was and how to work the microwave. His medication was all labeled and his meals all in the fridge and freezer with instructions. Okay mom let’s go! Finally we arrived at the airport and went to first class counter to check in. Luckily no mention of it by the agent so mom was still in the dark. Now was the moment I had to hand her the boarding pass. She was about to study it but I realized she was looking for the TSA pre-check designation so I quickly pointed that out so she wouldn’t stare at it longer. We said a short goodbye (she had to check in elsewhere). I headed through security; hoping to get through quickly and get that boarding pass out of her hand! Haha! Sadly, it took me so much longer. This rude guy was acting a little anxious in the line next to me and just as I was about to get in line for the scanner, he almost knocked me over and jumped in front of me. TSA was keeping a watch on him as you could tell he was nervous and then he started arguing with them about something he had in his bag. They informed him that they had to pat him down and he kept trying to get some special ID or something he had in his bag. They kept trying to tell him that he couldn’t touch his bag till the pat down but he wasn’t listening. Finally they took him aside and another agent waived me through. Uggh! I quickly found mom. Luckily she was just looking around the airport and didn’t stare at her boarding pass any longer. She remarked how flimsy it was and was afraid of losing it. BINGO…”hey mom, why don’t I hold them?” She bought it and handed it over. Mission accomplished!
I informed mom that I had guest passes to the Admiral’s Club prior to the trip so we were both excited to be able to go there and have breakfast and hang out until our boarding time.

What world was I living in? I don’t think I can ever wait at the gate for another flight! I must join this club! It was finally time to head to the gate and I wanted to make certain to be there for the “first class” call. The anticipation was growing! The gate was super crowded and we couldn’t even fit in the area. I quickly realized that I couldn’t hear the boarding calls out in the walkway so I insisted that we squeeze in closer. She was a little confused by this but came along. Finally they called for first class passengers. I said, “come on mom.” She gave me this confused look and was like “no, they said first class passengers. We can’t go yet!” I again tried grabbing her hand and pulling her along, she was like “we are gonna get in trouble.” Finally I said, “mom, they called for first class passengers.” She said “and we are not!” I told her to look down at her boarding pass….her face was priceless. She was so giddy and people around us were realizing what was going on and excited for her. We quickly boarded and she couldn’t wait to call my dad and brag. The call started with “your daughter is too much! Guess where I am sitting?” LOL

First class was awesome, and yes I ordered cranberry juice and vodka for breakfast; hey it is vacation! We ate several snacks (we’d regret this later) and watched sleeping beauty while enjoying all the wiggle room.

Even though we left 30 minutes late, we made up for it in flight and arrived on time in Orlando. We headed straight for magical express. Mom was impressed of how organized it was and this was her first experience with the magic bands; something that would become extremely comical every time she tried to scan it.

Sadly, it took 2 hours from the time we landed till we arrived at the Contemporary Resort. I was getting a little nervous because we had 1:05 fastpasses to Be Our Guest for lunch. We were greeted when we stepped off of magical express and escorted to the front desk to check in. A very nice cast member checked us in. I sent mom off to explore before the CM could say “I see we have you with us for 2 nights.” Surprise remember? I informed the CM and she was very careful about what she said when mom returned. I told her of our fastpass for lunch so she made it short and sweet.

Our room wasn’t ready so I ran to the bell desk to store my plane bag and we hurried to the monorail. I forgot that magic kingdom is the last stop from the Contemporary and since we were in a hurry it seemed like forever! Mom went to scan her magic band and it was turned around. We would laugh at this many times throughout the trip cause she refused to make it tighter and the mickey heads would never line up. At one point the CMs started just grabbing her wrist and doing it for her. Oh one note about the magic bands, she did remark that it wasn’t the color she had chosen. Another little lie I had to tell. You see we got 2 sets because of the split stay and I knew she would want her chosen color for the later part of the trip so I told her that due to our room discount rate ending a couple of days into the trip, I had to split our stay into 2 reservations but at the same resort; same room. I also booked the dining plan for the first 2 nights for her to try it so I offered that as an excuse as well. She bought it! So gullible but loveable!

Continued:

We made it to BOG on time despite the large crowd during the parade taping. This was my first time here for lunch and fantasyland was still under construction last time mom was here so this was all new for her.

Mom kept trying to figure out how the CMs knew where we were sitting to bring out the right food to us without table numbers. It was hilarious and finally they told her to not question the magic. Mom ordered the pulled pork and lemon meringue cupcake. I got the roast beef sandwich and masters cupcake.

Lunch was yummy and a great use of a quick service credit. After lunch, we rode, Winnie the pooh, peter pan and little mermaid. The park was extremely crowded due to the Christmas parade taping but luckily everyone was on main street so the ride lines weren’t too bad. Except peter pan which we had a fastpass for. We got a text that the room was ready about 3:30 so we headed back to resort after a quick ride on our favorite (philharmagic). We then took monorail back to the resort. A quick stop at the food court to pickup our refillable mugs and off to the room.

We headed to our room on the 6th floor. I booked a bay view tower room. I loved the room décor. Very modern. We headed to our balcony to check out the view. Stupid me didn’t even realize I was on the other side of the resort. To our surprise, we had a magic kingdom view! Amazing!

Continued (post #3 - day 1)

I would quickly find out that I could lay in the bed and watch the castle change colors all night! Lovely! We could see space mountain, tomorrowland, and main street. The monorail and train going by as well; also the huge Christmas tree out front. It was an amazing upgrade!

While we relaxed for a bit before dinner, mom decided to unpack. Surprise time. I informed her not to get too comfortable or to fully unpack cause we were only staying here for 2 nights. She gave me that confused look again and said, “what are you up to?” She unpacked just what she needed for the next 2 days. I sadly could not as my luggage hadn’t arrived! An hour went by and still no luggage and both of mom’s suitcases were there. I called magical express and luggage services. They stated that they only picked up 2 bags at the airport for us and both were delivered. I informed them that we had 3 and they said they would check with the airline. I started to panic. Mom tried to calm me down but she could tell I was ready to cry as it was almost 40 min later and still no call from magical express. I called the airline myself and they confirmed that my bag arrived in Orlando and was scanned in. They checked and confirmed that they didn’t have it and for me to call magical express back. I spoke with magical express and they said they were waiting for the airline to get back to them. I said don’t bother as I had already did that piece of work for them and the airline insists they picked it up. They said they would get back to me. I hung up and fought back the tears. I was already planning my trip to walmart for necessities. Finally about 30 min later, I got a call that my suitcase was on the bottom of one of their carts sitting in the storage room all this time and it was on its way up! Longest 3 hours of my life!

Finally I could freshen up and put the whole thing behind me and head out to dinner. I was so excited for mom to try Ohanas. Though with all the food we ate on the plane and at BOG, neither of us was very hungry. Mom has a shellfish allergy so they weren’t able to give us anything until the chef came over so we skipped the getting of the welcome bread. We were seated at a nice 2 person table by the window. By far the best view I’ve had dining here. Pixie dust all over the place. We could see the castle and the water pageant as it passed by. The chef came over and discussed the allergy. Instead of the lettuce wraps, he offered a salad with vinaigrette. He said that they use oyster sauce in the wraps so he didn’t want mom to have. I’ve heard the wraps aren’t that special anyway so no biggie. The salad was lovely. We asked about the bread and the waitress said she would get it after our drinks. Finally she returned with our drinks and we reminded her about the bread.

Another runner came by and brought us the salad wraps. Ummm…I explained that we shouldn’t have it. He looked confused but took it away. Our waitress returned with the pot stickers and chicken wings and no bread. I reminded her again and finally she ran to get it. Not sure when the lomein and veggies showed up but we were getting full already. I wanted another soda but couldn’t get the waitresses’ attention so decided to forget it. We were finally presented with the meats and could barely eat.

But of course we made room for dessert. Bread pudding is my mom’s favorite so she was so excited and we finished it I think!

We paid with the dining plan and rolled out of there. We stopped in their gift shop for a bit before deciding to end the night with wishes fireworks. We had a fastpass for mine train but were too tired to head back there. Instead we shopped on main street and waited for the fireworks.

Amazing as always! What a perfect way to end the night. I convinced mom (the one and only time) to walk back to contemporary. She loved how close the resort was but it was a bit of a walk for her. Especially after such a long day and food fest! We grabbed a quick beverage in the food court with our mugs and it was off to bed! Loved laying there watching the castle but I would soon find out that the bed rumbled everytime the monorail went by. 6th floor….hmmm. It took me a minute to ignore it and fall asleep.

Up next: Day 2 brings Hollywood Studios, Epcot and meeting friends for Hoop Dee Doo.

What a wonderful trip so far! Love all the pixie dust in the trip so far--both from you to your mom and from WDW to you both:cloud9: Hoping that the luggage issue was your only hiccup during your vacation!

Thanks for the pictures of the room :) I'll be there in 8 days:goodvibes and while my sister knows about how I moved us from Port Orleans Riverside--my mom doesn't ;) It's nice to be able to surprise them--isn't it!! Let's hope mine doesn't find out before we get onto ME ;)

Looking forward to reading more!!!

It's no wonder you are always blessed with so much pixie dust in your trips! You are the most generous person I've ever met and I absolutely LOVE that you're doing a TR so that I can live vicariously through you.

The last time we went to Ohana's we had the same issue with the poor service... but the food is always soooo good and such a good value that I don't care lol

Can't wait to see what happens on day 2!popcorn::

Day 2 – 12/07/2014

So the plan was to be up by 6:30 and out of the room by 8 but we were so full and tired from yesterday that it didn’t happen. Sadly I didn’t sleep well. The humming from the monorail kept me up for a while an even after it stopped it just felt like I could still feel the vibrating so I was awake for a while. And once Chef Mickey opened, well that was another story. We were right above it so it was loud first thing in the morning. We decided to take it slow, hit the food court for breakfast and tour the resort since we were leaving tomorrow. So here comes my rant about the bathrooms. What is up with those sinks? While sleek and modern they were a pain to deal with. I heard others complain of the lack of counter space but had no idea. Also the sink didn’t drain if you poured something (i.e. coffee) in the back of it so we found ourselves having to clean them ourselves or stare at coffee and toothpaste stains. I went to take a shower and the shower head had 2 settings, trickle and wide spread. So needless to say I got water everywhere. And why is the towel rack so far from the shower? I carefully stepped out of the shower to get one and warned my mom to grab a towel before she took her shower. They could also use a stool or bench in there for your clothes and towel. We moved the small ottoman from the bedroom in there. Ok rant over!
While mom was in the shower, I snuck a morning surprise onto her bed. I bought this little cute Minnie from a store at home and the gift card holder. My sister and her husband wanted to give mom some cash to blow in Disney so they filled it up and I helped with the surprise. Mom was so happy to get this!

We headed to the food court at about 9 and since we were still a little full from last night, we shared the bounty platter and used a quick service credit. Thought I had a picture but I don’t. Anyway it wasn’t very good and it was cold but it was something. It came with eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast and potatoes. We filled our mugs and then made stops by the stores, pool, beach and lobby.

I love the new frozen display. I also picked up this cute snowflake sugar cookie.

We took the bus to studios. We had a fastpass for star tours and amazingly we made it with 5 minutes to spare. Jerky as always but I do like that ride. Mom loved it. We had a fastpass for Indiana Jones only cause it was available when I picked them but neither of us was interested so we skipped it. I wanted mom to see the frozen stuff so we headed back there. Sadly it wasn’t as good in the new location as when I was just there this summer. Very small and compact. We stayed only a few minutes and did some much needed shopping for my nieces who of course love frozen.

We were both starting to get hungry and I remembered hearing about the huge sandwiches at starring rolls (or so I thought) and since we had dinner plans, we again decided to split a quick service credit. In all the times I’ve been to Disney, I’ve never been in there and boy is that place small. We got the turkey sandwich and chips and an apple juice. For our dessert we got the butter finger cupcake.

Haha…look at mom’s eyes making sure I don’t run off with her half! Lunch was good but certainly not filling sharing it. The huge cupcake helped and we decided we’d be good till dinner. It was finally time for our fastpass to mom’s favorite, toy story. She loves this ride so much and due to her lack of skills, I was sure she’d be saying I cheated again. Sorry there are no pics of the inside line queue as we were on right away.

Mom got 31,000 and I got 163,000 so of course what do you think happened? Yup, she told everyone that would listen that I cheated! Haha…give it up mom! Here she is laughing telling all the cast members.

DAY 2 - CONTINUED

We were pretty much done with studios for the time being so decided to head over to epcot since we were so close. Mom and I love the santas in world showcase so we wanted to knock a few out. Or that was the plan at least. We jumped on the boat to epcot but when we got to yacht club, we remembered that we wanted to see the Christmas displays so we jumped off the boat. We hit yacht club first.

Then headed over to the beach club to check out theirs. We also took this opportunity to sit and rest in the lobby for a bit as I had already run mom around thus far. She also called dad to check in on him and my sister and her husband to thank them for the gift!

Once rested, we headed to international gateway and world showcase. Sadly, we didn’t get far. We headed past the UK, France and Morocco and sadly, we were too tired to care about the story tellers today. So instead, we took the boat over to future world and found a bench to wait for the gospel show.

The show was awesome and lasted 25 minutes. So we were all charged up to keep going. Mom was still in search of a bag to carry around the parks and I wanted some new earrings I saw so we headed to mousegears. We stayed in there awhile and bought way too much! We now had to decide how we wanted to go to Ft Wilderness for dinner with friends. We had several options but ultimately decided to take the bus to wilderness lodge and then their boat to the fort. Mom hates the monorail platforms at epcot so I think she just wanted to avoid them. Once at WL, we had to stop and see the Christmas decorations didn’t we?

We headed finally out to the boat dock to catch the blue flag boat. It came quickly and we were making good time. Both of us tired but still pushing on. Since we had so much time, we made a stupid decision. The boat stopped at contemporary first and since we had shopping bags, we took it as an opportunity to drop them off in the room and freshen up for dinner. Boy what a mistake! We dropped our stuff off, freshened up and headed quickly back out to the boat dock. The temperature had begun to change and it was getting really cold. Something happened and it would be forever before the next boat came. By the time we made it to the fort, they were already seating people for hoop dee doo. I texted Rebecca to see where she and her mom were and met up with them on the porch.

I was so happy to see her (though I just saw her in September) and finally meet her mom. We introduced everyone and headed off to find the rest of our crew. We finally met up with Glenda (glendamax to you guys), Kat and Glenda’s aunt Brenda and we all headed in. We had a great view.

DAY 2 - CONTINUED

We were good and hungry by this point and couldn’t wait for the food to come around. The show was awesome as always and the company even better. We had a great time laughing at all the corny jokes and the food was plentiful.

Here is one of my plate…shh…don’t tell my weight loss coach! And I had a second helping.

Photos galore! Man look at the fun we are having!

Sadly it was time to say goodbye to our friends. Reb had to head home and Glenda and her crew were off to see the lights at the campgrounds. Mom and I were set on making it to Osborne lights at studios so we headed back to the boat dock. We made it to wilderness lodge but had to stop in the little girl’s room then out to the bus stop for the bus to studios. We must have just missed one cause it took 30 minutes for another to come. We were cutting it close and would only have about 20 minutes to see the lights but still planned on trying. Yeah….we weren’t listening to our bodies. We finally boarded the bus and as luck would have it, the bus stopped at contemporary to pick up. We took one look at each other and both stood up and stepped off the bus. Yup…plan scrapped. We were truly exhausted from this long day and we still had to pack up and switch resorts in the morning so we called it a night. What a full day!
Up Next: Day 3 – Mom’s big surprise…grand Floridian main building…..and an even bigger surprise and more pixie dust for me!
