We are spending a few days in Sausalito and then heading down to Monterey/Big Sur. Does anyone have any recommendations for seeing Redwoods or Sequoias other than Muir Woods? We don't want to travel too far from PCH if possible.

Also, with the March road collapse near Big Sur, will we have to detour from our PCH route from SF down to the Bixby Bridge or has that been repaired?

How scary is the ride southbound from SF to the Bixby bridge or is it worse futher south? We are hoping to make the drive to Big Sur & head back to Monterey and still have some time at the end of the day to see Monterey as that's where we will be staying for the night.

For redwoods, go to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The entrance is on Highway 1, just south of the town of Big Sur. Lots of large redwoods and lots of great hiking. Indeed, you can hike all the way in to Cachagua Rd in Carmel Valley if you wish, though it will probably take a couple of days.

Highway 1 is open from Monterey to well south of the Bixby Bridge, all the way down to Gorda. There's another slide 3 miles south of Gorda that has the southern section closed, but the northern half that you're concerned about is open and running. They're still working on that big slide between Palo Colorado and Bixby Bridge, but they have one lane open, controlled by a stop light. It's no more inconvenient than any city stop light, so enjoy!

The section between Monterey and the town of Big Sur has some sections that are high on a cliff, but in general isn't quite as dramatic as the section south of the town of Big Sur. If you have an inordinate fear of heights you may encounter some butt-clinching moments, but for everyone else it's just fine. I love the Big Sur coast - one of the best drives in the nation.
